Late night with kim. [ light laughter ] hey, testing missiles is one thing, but making fun of our president is my job. [ laughter ] thats right, kim jongun called trump a mentally deranged u. S. Dotard, which is a good burn, because if theres one thing trump hates its having to use a dictionary. [ light laughter ] dotard, im going to look this up, its probably very handsome man. or rich handsome man. thats probably what this word means. I dont know the order of the alphabet, so i dont know what im doing here. [ light laughter ] thats right, kim jongun said president trumps remarks to the u. N. Threatening north korea reflect mentally deranged behavior. Do you know how messedup you have to be for kim jongun to call you deranged . [ laughter ] thats like rachael ray saying youre too excited about olive oil. [ laughter ] senator john mccain announced today that he will not vote for the grahamcassidy bill to repeal and replace obamacare, again. If he kills one more Republican Health care bill, he gets a free sandwich deservedly so. [ cheers and applause ] earn that sandwich. Politico published an article today profiling white house staffers who may be considering leaving the trump administration, citing reasons like low morale, the russia investigation, leadership turnover, the russia investigation, long hours, the russia investigation, low pay, the russia investigation, and the investigation about russia. [ light laughter ] former White House Communications director Anthony Scaramucci cohosted abcs the view. Even weirder, mike pence deejayed on ellen. [ laughter ] i dont care for this next one. During his appearance on the view today, scaramucci accused former adviser steve bannon of having a messiah complex. Well, it definitely looks like hes been turning water into wine. [ light laughter ] two more waters, please ill take the whole bottle. First lady melania trump, hosted local schoolchildren at the white house today to harvest and replant the vegetable garden of former first Lady Michelle obama. Or as the white house is calling it, repeal and replant. [ light laughter ] we must put an end to this horrible garden. Representative Maxine Waters reportedly called housing secretary ben carson an educated fool during a meeting yesterday. No, you are yelled carson, several days later. [ laughter ] Facebook Ceo Mark Zuckerberg discussed his companys possible role in russias influence on the election yesterday saying, i dont want anyone to use our tools to undermine democracy. In that case, you may want to talk to these tools who are undermining our democracy. [ cheers and applause ] theyd love to hear from you. Today was National Hobbit day. Unfortunately, Jeff Sessions saw his shadow. [ laughter ] so that means six more weeks of racism. [ light laughter ] [ audience ohs ] very hard to take a hobbit setup get to racism. [ light laughter ] and finally, netflix recently removed an episode of a childrens cartoon after viewers spotted what appeared to be a penis etched in the background of a scene. So, yeah, shes done exploring for a while. [ laughter ] [ audience ohs ] ladies and gentlemen, we have a great show for you tonight. Just forget that happened. Get that out of here heads. [ applause ] from nbcs law and order true crime the Menendez Murders, edie falco is back on the show. [ cheers and applause ] and ive watched the first couple episodes, its really great. And she, of course, is always a delight to have here. Also hes hosting a new show on comedy central, the opposition, Jordan Klepper is joining us. [ cheers and applause ] so excited to talk to him about his new show. Im so excited to see it. And she is the longtime creative director at vogue and author of the new book ginger nuts, Grace Coddington is here tonight. [ cheers and applause ] i cannot wait to talk to her about that. Before we get to all of our fantastic guests, this week there were once again, several new bombshell in the russia investigation, including the revelation that president trumps former campaign chief offered private briefings on Trumps Campaign to a russian billionaire. For more on this its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] seth even when theyre out of the white house, trumps former aides cant seem to stop lying. Yesterday former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer continued his attempted rehabilitation tour with an interview on abc where he was asked if he had ever lied to the American People. And managed to pull off the rare feat of lying about lying. Have you ever lied to the American People . I dont think so. You dont think so . Nope, i dont cheat on my taxes unequivocally, you can say no . I look, again, you want to find some thing ive not knowingly done anything to do that, no. Seth you never lied to the American People . Then what was that thing you did at the emmys . Because remember, you came out and said, this is the largest audience to witness the emmys, period. That was a joke. About when you lied about the size of the inauguration crowd. A joke that you told about the lie that you told. [ light laughter ] spicer might think hes gotten away from that lie, but even he cant get away from the widening russia investigation. Special counsel robert mueller, has made it known he wants to talk to former white house aides, including spicer. And when that happens spicer will have no excuse for leaving out key details. Former colleagues of sean spicer tell axios that he filled notebook after notebook during meetings at the Republican National committee. Later at the Trump Campaign, and then at the white house. Spicer was so well known to his copious notes that underlings joked about him writing a tellall. Thats right, a tellall. Although judging from spicers experience in the white house, it might more of a tellnone. I have not asked the president since the last time we spoke about this. I have not asked the president. I havent asked him ive not talked to him qualities looking forward to to seeing. I dont know if hes seen the legislation or not. But again, i havent spoken to him on it. Honestly, i havent asked him. I honestly havent asked him that specific question. I have not had an opportunity to have that discussion. I literally have not had that kind of conver i have not discussed that with the president. Seth so look for spicers memoir in stores this fall, i dont know what happened. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] although trumps inner circle is apparently worried about how much spicer knows. Because one white house official told axios people are going to wish theyd been nicer to sean. He was in a lot of meetings. Was he . [ light laughter ] he came to press briefings like a College Senior who missed the whole semester but still showed up for the final exam. Whoa, whoa, whoa, periodic table i thought this class was about dinosaurs so when spicer was asked during his a. B. C. About his involvement in the Russian Investigation he repeatedly stonewalled. Has the mueller team reached out to you at all . Im not going to discuss that issue at all. Have you hired a lawyer . Im not going to discuss that issue at all. So you havent been subpoenaed . Im not going to discuss that issue at all. Did you ever hear inside the white house that mueller should be fired . Im not going to discuss that issue at all. Seth sean spicer is magic 8ball with only one answer. [ laughter ] hes a magic one ball. Will i ever find true love . Im not going to discuss that issue at all . You suck, magic 1ball but sean spicer isnt the only trump associate in muellers crosshairs. As we mentioned earlier this week, mueller also seems to be closing in on former Trump Campaign chair paul manafort. And now theres damning new evidence and manafort may have been seeking to profit off his role in the campaign, by offering exclusive access to a Russian Oligarch. The Washington Post reporting tonight that quote less than two weeks before donald trump accepted the republican president ial nomination, his Campaign Chairman offered to provide briefings on the race to a russian billionaire, closely aligned with the kremlin. Manafort sent an email intended for oleg deripaska. In the email, written on july 7th, 2016, manafort offered to keep deripaska informed about the campaign. If he needs private briefings, we can accommodate. Seth this is unreal. The chairman of an american president ial campaign offered private briefings on that campaign to a Russian Oligarch. If you cant connect the dots at this point, its because the [ bleep ] dots are too close together. [ laughter ] it just looks like one big dot. [ applause ] lets zoom in on that. There you go, there are your dots. [ applause ] and now in an effort to protect themselves, Trump Officials are even going so far as to pretend they barely know manafort. And avoid saying his name. Vice president mike pence was asked about news that the fbi had wiretapped manafort, and talked about it like he had no idea who manafort was. All these revelations are breathtaking to me, including the the recent news that there was, in fact, wiretapping. Against someone who had a condominium in the trump tower. Seth someone who had a condominium in trump tower . He was the Campaign Chairman. Thats like mick jagger referring to Keith Richards as the guitar player from that popular band. [ light laughter ] seriously, heres a former Campaign Chairman, hes being accused of offering private access to a kremlinbacked russian billionaire. Thats ripe for at least one followup question. Lets see the very next thing the team at fox and friends asked mike pence. Well let them do our job, were gonna keep doing our job. Was it good to see us again . Seth oh, my god. [ laughter ] i never thought id say this. But fox and friends, youve got to stop being so thirsty if theres anything that doesnt work on mike pence its homoerotic undertones. [ laughter ] it makes sense, though, that pence would pretend to forget manaforts name. In fact, its in keeping with the strategy trump himself has used. After it was reported that the fbi had raided manaforts home, trump said this of his former campaign chair. He was with the campaign, as you know, for a very short period of time. Seth yeah. Everyone works for you for a short period of time. [ light laughter ] your president ial seal should be a Cardboard Box with a fern sticking out of it. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] manafort was there longer than most. He worked for trump for three months. Thats almost ten scaramuccis. [ light laughter ] and its a shame trump isnt defending manafort from these russia allegations. Especially after manafort gave this incredibly wellworded defense of trump against the russia allegations during the campaign. So, to be clear, mr. Trump has no Financial Relationships with any Russian Oligarchs . If thats what he said, thats what i said thats obviously what our position is. [ laughter ] seth in his defense, he was up all night updating a Russian Oligarch on the campaign. Come on, there must be a more articulate way to deny something. Sean . I i look, again you want to find some thing ive not knowingly done anything to to do that, no. Seth use your words. [ laughter ] so manafort was only on the campaign for three months. Maybe that isnt so long. I mean, its not like trump ever publicly thanked him, on stage, in front of tv cameras, right . Paul manafort has done an amazing job. Hes here someplace. Wheres paul . [ applause ] paul manafort. Oh, good. You made it. Seth oh, good, you made it. [ light laughter ] trump talks to his closest aides Like Neighbors at a barbecue. Oh, hey, didnt think youd come, kegs out back. [ light laughter ] okay, fine, but so what . Its not like manafort repeatedly insisted that he knew trump well, reported to him directly, and did exactly what trump told him to do, right . Whats that . Wrong . Man its like im doing this on purpose. Well, the candidate is in control of his campaign. Thats number one. And im in control of doing the things that he wants me to do in the campaign. He reached out to some people who suggest to me we got together, ive known donald since the 1980s. I work directly for the boss. So thats it, you only have one guy you listen to and its trump . Well, i listen to everybody, but i have one man whose voice sounds is louder than everybody elses. Seth that makes sense. Not only is trumps voice louder than everybody else, its louder than my own thoughts. Huh, i wonder what i should have for dinner tonight . Trump steaks are the worlds greatest steaks seth get out of my head [ laughter ] so now we have reports that the people closest to trump tried to get dirt on Hillary Clinton from the russian government. Tried to use a moscow business deal to help trump get elected, and offered private access to a russian billionaire. No matter what happens next, the evidence we already have is damning. At this point theres a good chance trump will only be in office for a very short period of time. Seth this has been a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] well be right back with edie falco, everybody announcer for more of seths closer looks be sure to subscribe to late night on youtube. Please give it up for the 8g band right over there. [ cheers and applause ] also weve been so excited and honored this week. Fred armisen has been with us on the drums. [ cheers and applause ] and fred, very exciting. You are you do so many things. Youre going to be in the lego ninjago movie and thats your lego character. Fred thats it, thats cole. Seth thats cole, thats great. Do you have many of these lego figurines . Fred ive got like four of them. Seth four of them . Fred yeah. Seth thats great. Do you have them in sort of all your different homes so youre never away from one . Fred yes. Seth yeah, that makes sense. Fred overseas. Seth overseas, right. One in the safe deposit box. God forbid something should happen. Fred of course, yes. Seth fred, youve accomplished so much. This show, portlandia, movies. And im so impressed with the things youve accomplished. And yet i worry sometimes that you make up stories to get even more attention. [ laughter ] and and its fine. You can admit to me if im right, because i would love you all the same. Youre one of my oldest friends. Fred uhhuh. [ laughter ] seth but like, for example, i sometimes feel like when i hear people talking about things, i hear you jump in, in a way, to sort of drag the attention over to you. For example, we were talking backstage about how donald trump had started calling kim jongun rocket man. And you just jumped in and said, oh, thats my nickname, my nicknames rocket man. Fred it is. Seth i dont believe that. Fred i am rocket man. [ laughter ] seth why do people call you rocket man if thats true . Fred i design rockets, okay . [ light laughter ] i i often go to kinkos, right . And i just use their Little Office area there. Seth uhhuh. Fred and i design rockets for people, anyone they want to come by and ill design a rocket for them. [ light laughter ] and so, you know just different sizes, different kinds seth im sorry, do you design working rockets . What are you designing for them . Fred ive never seen them put to use, but i know they would work. [ laughter ] i guarantee you they would cause the logic of rockets is pretty easy. Its fuel. And then its got to be, you know its got to you know. Its facing where its going to hit, you know. [ laughter ] so its got little wings on it, so it doesnt go offcourse and stuff like that. Seth uhhuh. Fred so, just plenty of fuel. You need a launching pad. Theyre pretty easy. So i just design them for people and seth so, im sorry, youre saying the key the only thing you need to know to design rockets is you need to know theres fuel, it has to be aiming at what its going to hit, wings and a launching pad . Fred yeah. So but basically, its like it goes up and then youve got to like, figure out the curvature of the earth. [ light laughter ] its pretty easy. You just got to aim for it. Seth so if i come to you, do i find you at kinkos . Do i just go to the kinkos and say, hey, rocket man, could you make me a rocket . Fred yes, its the one on 34th street. Seth okay, gotcha. [ laughter ] and how long does it usually take you to design a rocket . Fred ten minutes. Seth okay, great. [ laughter ] fred okay. Seth well thats great. All right, i take it back. Give it up for rocket man, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] our first guest tonight is an emmy and golden globewinning actress you know from the sopranos and nurse jackie. She stars in law and order true crime the Menendez Murders which premieres tuesday at 10 00 on nbc. Lets take a look. There are no suspects yet. Family members offered their own theories. My brother made the mistake of buying a business that had been used before by the mafia. When he took over what does the brain trust at the times think . Soble and johnson think theres something to this mob angle. Their deaths leave behind two sons, lyle and eric menendez. Those boys did it. Seth please welcome back to the show edie falco, everybody [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome back, edie. Why thank you. Seth its so wonderful to see you. And so wonderful to be here. Seth i watched the first couple of episodes of this. It is right up my alley. I really love it. You play the defense attorney the reallife defense attorney who defended the menendezs. Indeed, i do, yes. Seth leslie abramson. Yes. Seth and but you did not meet her personally, you never spoke to her, right . No, no, apparently she was approached by the nbc people and she was not interested in partaking. Seth gotcha. But this was a trial that was very much on television. But you also play her as we saw in the clip, you sort of play her private life. Do you feel a bit of freedom, not having met her that you get to make your own choices . You know, i hate to say that, but a little bit. Seth yeah. Because, the truth is nobody knows what happened with her along with her husband. I mean i guess thats up for conjecture. But nobody that i know knows what happened. Seth yeah. And so theres no way of knowing beyond ones imagination what that was like. So yeah, i guess its easier than if she was there. It was like, that never happened. Seth yeah. You know, so seth this is better, yeah. You got the freedom of choice. The one thing though that definitely happened, and i want to know whether you enjoyed this, or you found this limiting. The wig that you have in this show is really just one to remember. Then theres the wig. [ laughter ] seth and that is i guess that that was hair in the 90s. That was she didnt walk in and everybody said, whats going on with your hair . That was just a thing a lot of people were doing. Well, no. The truth is thats exactly what i wanted. I wish i had seen this picture when it was the 90s cause i would have been so frigging happy. [ light laughter ] i tried all the perms i got, how badly they turned out. Seth what was wrong with your perms . Well, often my hair wasnt long enough. Seth uhhuh. You cant get a perm with short hair. Seth yeah, oh they didnt tell you before they did it . No, no. But its what everybody wanted. And she, leslie abramson, was born with this hair. Seth oh, really . And she hated it, from what i understand. It was the bane of her existence. Seth you guys, should do like, a gift of the magi where you trade hair somehow. [ light laughter ] i dont know what next years project. Seth next years project. I just want to talk, mostly because this was my experience, my television experience last year as i kind of put Everything Else aside and my wife had never seen the sopranos and we completely rewatched all of it. Wow. Seth and the very interesting thing to me is, the first time i watched it, i was not married, and i saw it as a show about the mafia. And then i watched it again with my wife and i realized, oh, this is a show about a marriage. And then assuming that must have been what it was for you the whole time. Yeah, i mean yes. And people would often say to me, what its like you know, what is it like doing a mob show . And i was like, oh, right, right, mines a mob show. [ light laughter ] it really was, you know, of course, how he made his money was a big part of a lot of peoples attraction to the show. But, you know, its a husband, wife and kids trying to raise their children at this time in our culture, you know, all that stuff. So i forget that thats, you know that that was a big part of peoples appeal. Seth and you still i think people, because they love that show so much, you were approached by people expecting you to be a lot closer to carmela than you actually are. Yeah, yeah. That would happen. It happens less so now. Now nurse jackie i hear more often, like coming up out of the subway and a homeless man came up, you got to wonder where he has seen the show. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] and then what he said to me is, oh, i do the same drugs as you [ laughter ] and i thought, you know. If you ever want to feel like wake up in the morning and feel like what youre doing is important. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] there was that. Seth there you go. But also in the days of sopranos, a lot of women, i was in a mall in new jersey which was the first sign that seth asking it for it, you were asking for it. The day was not going to go well. And people, a bunch of you know, variations on carmela came running up to me. The nails, the hair, the makeup, and the jewelry and all that. Oh my god, i cant believe it, we recognized you with your disguise, she said to me, jeans and a tshirt. [ laughter ] and is like, oh my god, we should invite her, were having a Sleepover Pajama Party this weekend, we love you i just adorable to do that sitcom with me at a pajama party with these women. You know. Seth do you think they would be disappointed if they knew exactly how far afield of carmela you are in real life . Horrified yeah. I mean, its just not it would not be appealing to them. Im really a big fat bore. Seth yeah, well, there you go. I dont believe that to be true, but i can see that theyd be disappointed you that werent fully carmela. Eh, there are worse things. Seth and i also i heard you say that you and james gandolfini, you did not socialize much outside the show. Was that by choice . And if so, do you think it helped the performance . You know, it wasnt by intellectual choice. But, i think in retrospect, ive done that a couple of times with jobs that ive done, the people that i have to be most intimate with as characters, i tend to not get to know on the outside. You know, i think it might just be that its easier when i saw jims face, it really was just tony. It wasnt like, oh, right, last week i went to his familys house, or whatever. And that made it a very full experience for me. So i think this might be some sort of subterranean method i have. Seth gotcha. You also mentioned nurse jackie. I wonder, you know, because again, you obviously played a nurse who had addiction issues. You were not obeying the law a lot of time in that show. How did nurses feel about that show . Were you ever approached by them . They were not all happy. Seth uhhuh. They were not the ones that spoke to me. But a lot of nurses came up to me who were happy and said this actually was an issue. The drug addiction, but also, just the life of a nurse and being portrayed on television. Its a work i cant imagine taking on in my real life. Its the kind of selfless thing that i just dont have. Seth yeah, no. [ light laughter ] me neither. Its incredibly hard work, and people are mean to you. Seth yeah. But, there was people that didnt like sopranos because they thought we were portraying italians in a bad light. Seth did you ever have mafia people come and up tell you not identified as such. Seth yeah, i guess that [ laughter ] i guess thats like the first thing they teach you. Its like, oh my god, im in the mob. Can i talk to you about you know, that did not happen a lot. Seth im in waste management. [ laughter ] i totally cant relate. Are you talking about this family show im doing on hbo . Seth you have a couple of movies coming up as well. Which is very exciting. I do, i do. Seth you shot a louis c. K. Film. I did. Seth it was just a film that nobody even knew was being shot. That seems to be his m. O. Seth thats he did very secretly did a show. Its kind of great, people see it having absolutely no preconceptions. I think its very hard to do in this day and age. And i respect that. Seth yeah, and then, you have Something Else as well. What else are you doing . A movie called outside in written by lynn shelton and jay duplass. Seth oh, fantastic. Yeah, and louiss movies called, i love you daddy. Seth excellent. Well i cant wait for both, and i cant wait to see more of the show. Great. Seth it was wonderful, what i saw. And its always such a pleasure to have you here. Thank you, edie. Pleasure to be here. Thank you. Seth edie falco, everybody. Law and order true crime the Menendez Murders premieres tuesday at 10 00pm on nbc. Well be right back with Jordan Klepper. Please welcome to the show Jordan Klepper, everybody [ cheers and applause ] seth hi, jordan, how are you . Seth, how are you, sir . Seth good, im so excited for your show. Congratulations on getting a show, thats great news. Thank you very much. Yeah. Seth and thank you for being here tonight, although i have to i want to take issue with something. You chose to be here tonight. Yes. Seth tonight is your wedding anniversary. It is my wedding anniversary, yes, but thank you for pointing that out. [ light laughter ] seth but i think this might be okay, because your wife is also on the show. Yes, my wife laura grey. She is working on the show. In fact, she was working today. So this works out well. We love each other, but we love selfpromotion even more. Seth thats wonderful. [ light laughter ] thats how you found each other. A love of selfpromotion. Thats how we found each other. Yeah, so you can celebrate an anniversary or seth you guys gave vows to yourselves. Exactly, like, i promise to make myself look good in your image. [ laughter ] till death do us part. But im mostly thinking about me right now. Seth there you go. So you are doing your show in manhattan. Yes. Seth but i heard word that you are operating out of a hotel. We are, yes. The pennsylvania hotel. Seth the pennsylvania hotel. The historic pennsylvania hotel. Oh, yes. Right by penn station. Seth yeah. The sexiest part of new york city. [ laughter ] if you know anything about new york city, you know, you go to penn station, you get a slice of pizza, you see some tv, and you sleep in the bedbox. Seth yeah. Most people walk out of penn station, they say, i want a hotel right here [ laughter ] i never want to leave is there a place for political satire around here . Yeah, we actually we toured the hotel. They reconfigured the ballroom to make it a studio. And we walked around and it had this funny smell. Its like, what is that smell . Their like, oh, there was a food show in here before here. I was like, yeah, what food show . The worst cooks was in here beforehand. So you you could imagine the smell. Like a food show beforehand is going to smell. The worst cooks still lives in our studio. [ laughter ] seth so you have to overcome that. Yes. Seth but you have a great team. You have some daily show experience. Yeah. Seth on this show, you are playing a character who is altright, sort of inspired by alex jones, a bit of a conspiracy theorist. Tell us a little bit more about the character. Yeah. Were kind of diving into this altmedia landscape. The world of infowars and breitbart, the blaze. Like, we found like, this world of like, paranoid conspiracy that suddenly filters its way down into the mainstream and into the oval office. That was kind of the world we wanted to live in. Seth yeah, it was a good time for this. Yeah. Seth you i want to talk about it, because its sort of inspired by alex jones. And first i want to show, heres a promo for your show the opposition. Who are they . The enemy. Whos the enemy . They are. I already said that. Pay attention. Its time for us to fight back against them. Because them are fighting against we. Seth all right, very good. [ laughter ] made it super clear. Very clear. Seth but then this seems to me like a gift. Tell me if im wrong. Alex jones saw that promo and did a long piece on it, on his show, on his radio show. He has a lot of content to fill up on the radio show. When you when you do alt media radio, youre on air about 20 hours. So if theres something to talk about, you talk about it. Seth and heres what he had to say about that promo you just saw. Hes up there saying, you got to go through me. And then hell explain how he politically operates. Hes really telling them how to operate. Not the way we operate. Then he also says it very disingenuously. So theyre there getting their programming on how to attack us. While theyre learning to hate us. But really theyre discovering their identity. This is mind control. [ laughter ] yeah, yeah, yeah. [ cheers and applause ] seth so here you are, not even an episode into your show, and you have full engagement with your inspiration. Its a great start. Locked and loaded. And he is right. It is mind control. Seth yeah, okay, good. Oh, yeah. Viacom told me, we need to get inside the minds of 18 to 23yearolds, get them engaged in the show, so we can sell them fizzy drinks during the advertisement. And he knows it. He sees it. Seth fantastic. Yes, yes, boom. Huh, huh, huh yeah he knows what hes doing, hes signaling me, he knows. He wants me to bring it on, and you know what . Im happy. Seth there you go. [ light laughter ] seth and now youve but genuinely, you have been engaging a lot, or i should say not engaging, but doing a lot of research about this world that you want to talk about. And what is it you must have uncovered some things. Some actual, genuine ways that people interact or are drawn to the kind of media that youre talking about. Well, i do think when you get on the fringe with a lot of these media sources, or just news in general, i think what were starting to respond to is how its not necessarily the facts these people are pulling from, the veracity and validity that they get is how they experience the facts. So like, even alex jones does this on his show. Other people as well. Its not about like, i heard this fact. Its like, i experienced this, i got this email, i saw this thing. So an anecdote suddenly becomes a fact and it becomes a conspiracy and it becomes through a little bit of paranoia, then becomes something that other people begin to follow. And so, you just start to see this path towards chaos. And then you make a show about it. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] in making the show about it, does it become is it any less chaotic to you . Do you sort of feel like youre getting your head around it . Or in your research, do you have a sense of, oh, this is worse than i thought . I think you start to wrap your head around it. I mean, i would guess its cathartic to come to work and have a bunch of writers and be like, did you see this thing . Are you experiencing and like, be able to hash that out and try to make sense of it through a show later in the day, i think is something that, we all gain something from. Seth yes, you will learn once you start doing the show, that the off weeks are the hard weeks cause thats when you will go crazy. Yes, yeah. Seth exactly. cause then the news happens, and you have nowhere to talk about it, so you just sort of Wander Around manhattan talking out loud. And just start screaming thats when i celebrate my anniversary with my wife. [ laughter ] seth yeah, there you go. You came from chicago, much like me, you were an improviser. Yeah. Seth do you have any memories of your favorite times in chicago, your favorite shows . Favorite shows . Probably my favorite improv show in chicago, i was in a group called american dream, which was a lovely group of people. And we did a bunch of weird, crazy shows. And the one that stands out is one of our members showed up late, because every improviser works two different jobs, was exhausted and needed to sleep. So we did an entire show at i. O. , where he went to sleep on stage. And we decided just to whisper the entire show. We asked the audience not to laugh, but to raise their hands. [ laughter ] and they did. And so we did this entire show where people were, instead of laughing, were raising their hands. And you started to see there was an improviser that came in halfway through, and just saw a bunch of people raising their hands and us whispering. It was like, this feels like a cult. And it was an improv show so he was right. Seth yeah, he was right. Well, youve come a long way from that. And congratulations. I really cant wait for monday. Thanks so much for being here, jordan. [ cheers and applause ] thank you sir. I appreciate it. Seth Jordan Klepper, everybody. The opposition premieres monday night on comedy central. [ cheers and applause ] seth you know our next guest from her iconic work as the creative director at vogue magazine for over 25 years. Her bestselling memoir grace and her unforgettable role in the documentary the September Issue. Her new book which is very similar to grace is which is called ginger nutz is available now. Please welcome to the show Grace Coddington, everybody [ cheers and applause ] seth hi, how are you . Shaking, but seth shaking, youre fine. This is very exciting. I i would be honest. If i knew that i was going to have an author of a book called ginger nutz on, i dont know if it would have been you. Why not . [ light laughter ] seth i dont know. Ginger nutz does not strike me as the name of a book youd write. How did you come to write a book called ginger nutz . Um, well i didnt actually write it. My friend Michael Roberts wrote it. And conceived it, actually. Seth so why isnt he here . [ laughter ] because you wouldnt have us on last week. Seth thats true, there you go. But how did this come about, this book . Well, it was a kind of silly story. I was 75, awhile back. And they were trying to throw me a surprise birthday party. Seth uhhuh. Do you like surprises . I love surprises. Oh, good, okay. Yeah, i do, fortunately. Well, you know, i always know somethings hatching when its my birthday time. Anyway. Um, they decided they were theyd like a nice invitation to send to everybody. Which i knew nothing about. And so they asked michael, whos an illustrator, well, hes everything. But anyway, hes an illustrator. And they asked him to do an invitation for the for the party. Seth and this is the invitation he drew. For your 75th. And that is there you go. [ laughter ] its wonderful. I think its wonderful. But, apparently everybody thought i would be incredibly offended. Seth okay. Because its an orangutan with very similar hair to yours, yeah. [ laughter ] anyway. So, i knew nothing about this, and the whole invitation died and i think they just emailed everybody or something, i dont know. Anyway, about three months later, michael suddenly sent me this picture. Emailed. And actually i never look at email, but i did happen to see this. And i said, you know, what the hell is this . [ light laughter ] and i said, you know, it kind of looks like me. And he told me the whole story. Seth okay. And you were not offended . I absolutely love it, i loved it, no. And i said, shes got to go somewhere, this girl. [ light laughter ] so together we sort of hatched up a sort of seth and so thats how a storyline. Seth we ended with the ginger nutz ended up with a very similar story to you in a very similar memoir. [ light laughter ] well, actually it was easy because Michael Roberts actually wrote my memoir kind of with me, for me. Seth thats fantastic. So he knew the story. Seth and he knew how to take that story and put on it an orangutan. Yeah, and sort of parallel it with seth thats fantastic. The whole story is completely my story. Seth you i first came to know you, and i know a lot of people in the fashion world have known you forever, but the September Issue, which is an excellent documentary about vogue and the inner workings of vogue. And, you know, not only do we see sort of anna wintour at work, but we i got to be introduced to you. Was that a film that you found a lot of people then became aware of who you are . Yes, yeah, i dont think anybody knew who i was. I mean, a few people in the fashion business knew. Kind of knew me a little bit. But certainly nobody in the street, i was never recognized seth and now people in the streets approach you, still from the September Issue . Still, yes. People are still seeing it. Its really incredible. Seth well, i on planes or something, i dont know. Seth i remember watching it and for me, it felt very similar to snl in that its very the stress that goes into putting together, especially the September Issue. And i felt a real connection with you. Because i felt like Lorne Michaels is a lot like anna wintour and your role i felt like was similar to a head writer at snl. Because they sort of are very good at giving bad news and then having you go tell it to people. [ light laughter ] uhhuh. Seth yeah. Yeah, right. Oh those pictures are killed. Seth yeah, but then it felt like you were very you had the right personality to do that, to give people bad news. Is that fair . Why gives you that . [ light laughter ] seth well, i just mean youre very sweet, so i feel like youd give to it them in a way thats easier. No, im not so sweet. Seth youre not, really . [ laughter ] im really horrible. Seth you know what ive mistaken you with ginger nutz. Yes. [ laughter ] seth the very kind orangutan who gives you bad news. You in your memoir, you have a you love youre a lover of cats. You currently have two cats, yes . I currently have two, yes. Im crazy about cats. Seth in your book these are these are other cats, right . These are cats youve had over the years . These are my drawings, yeah. Yeah, those actually, none of those are still ali oh yeah, no, one of them is still alive. This is pumpkin, sorry. [ laughter ] seth pumpkin just barely hanging on . [ laughter ] no, no, shes okay. Seth okay, shes okay . Shes up there, but seth okay, gotcha. Shes in good shape. Seth you have a friend whos a cat psychic. Is this true . Oh, yes. Yeah, yeah, christine. Seth christine. Have you gotten interesting information from christine about your cats over the years . Yeah, shes an amazing woman. Shes really you know i was told when i was writing a memoir, and i was writing about her, that i actually should not write about her. Because everybody would think im completely lunatic. Seth uhhuh. And my publisher was like, please can we edit this bit out, please, please . And i said, no, its very important to me. Shes amazing. Shes i mean you know cats go missing a lot. Seth uhhuh. We had one cat, puff. Seth puff is right there. Hes the one lying down, yeah. He was a very independent cat. [ light laughter ] and he and a redhead, actually. Seth okay. As is pumpkin. Seth yeah, pumpkin would make sense. Puff is [ light laughter ] anyway. Seth cheese puff i would have thought maybe would be red. Well anyway, he used to go on long walks. Were in wainscott and sometimes he would go on walks to montauk or something. Or so christine told me. And when she told me where he used to go, because sometimes he wouldnt come back. You know . And i would get really worried and i would call her at like 10 00, 11 00 at night seth so you would call the cat would go missing, and youd call your cat psychic . And shed say, hang on a minute. And then shed connect with him. And hed say, yeah ill be back very soon. Just give me five minutes, ill be back. [ laughter ] and honestly and then shed say, okay, go to the door now. And i would go to the door, open the door, and hes sitting there. Seth oh, my god. And this didnt happen once, this happened you know, too many times for it to be seth well, you know what it means . Christine was kidnapping your cat. [ laughter and applause ] how could you not see this . Thats very smart. Seth yes. I never thought of that. Seth she was like, yeah, thats going to be 500, grace. I just connected i just connected with your cat. Next time, call me and ill just say, just wait it out. [ light laughter ] thank you so much for being here. Its always such a pleasure to see you.
