Reporter those precious moments have been preserved. She has learned a lesson about gratitude for being alive. When we left, and throwing everything in, there was no fire on the side of the hill. Reporter for some of her neighbors that alert was a sharp dose of reality. They are all gone. They look like that house across the street, that is leveled. Reporter dans girlfriend valerie is about to walk down the road and see their home in shambles. Valerie actually felt relief. There it is encouraging because some things are salvaged. And all is not lost. That was our fear. Reporter she told me there is only one place to go after this and that is to move on. She is ready to start anew. But it is moving moderately into napa county right now. Just east of santa rosa, the oakmont fire burns along the road in steve terrain. Nearby inside the city of santa rosa were so many lives and homes have been lost. A glimmer of hope as this latest fire burns away from the city. Today, finally is a day where, at least, we here in the city of santa rosa feel like we can take a breath. Reporter and fire Officials Say they feel like they are getting the upper hand. But new fires can pop up quickly when winds blow scattered embers. They are bucking us back. You never know it was the middle of october in Sonoma County and we have fire behavior like this. Reporter the question is though, will these flames kick up again tomorrow once this smoke lifts identity and the temperatures start coming up. In all, 40 people have died in the fires. Troubling trend developing following the fires. We have learned that 13 people have been arrested for looting in santa rosa. Cameras were there as Police Arrested an alleged looter in the parking lot yesterday. Cell phones, jewelry, a bb gun. Police officers say they cant believe someone would take advantage during these stressful times. During the period we have received 150 calls of service that were alleged to be or related to looting. Those were hillsboro action in there. Departments of all over the bay area assisting local officers up there. Brush fire in novato this afternoon. Fire broke out in an open area near carmel court and 7th street. Residents put on alert. Still, it is on peoples skmiend you can see how close flames got to houses. The fire was contained before anyone was told to leave. One person whose brother is missing. I have my medication packed and my sons inhaler packed. They might have had to evacuate but they didnt. That fire was contained before anyone was urged to leave and the threat was hit close to home for one mother whose brother is one of those missing. One of the saddest is about a couple married for more than 50 years. They were visiting from Southern California enjoying a vacation at a rented home. Unable to see through the smoke, the childhood sweet hearts held each other in a Swimming Pool for five hours as the flame roared around them. 75yearold carmen was too weak from the smoke and she died in her husbands arms. They did that together. That was their strength. That was the beauty behind their relationship and everything they did. Armando survived with Second Degree burns. Kaiser hospital in santa rosa will reopen soon. Officials are saying they are not ready. This is the unforgettable video when kaiser nurses and doctors evacuated critical patients. The hospital itself is not ready to resume normal operations just yet. We are hopeful through the many different people and many different agencies to work with the hospitals. It is complicated and that is my fault. I didnt realize how complicated it was to get a hospital back up and running but we are close. The other main hospital in the region remains closed. It would be a while before it is ready to open. Fire in men mendo sinno fire. 35 acres burned so far. Eight people including a 14yearold boy were killed the first night of the fire exactly a week ago tonight. 250 homes have been destroyed. A major local college preparing to resume classes.
