Its affecting. No, this is the bay bridge toll plaza, the backup over on the right side and we also see that fog rolling in over the last 15 minutes, weve seen the view really become obscured by the low clouds and fog right on the oakland side. Lets show you the map, again, thats the bay bridge toll plaza, the map shows you speeds coming into the area are just fine but you see slowing right where our camera is and were also noticing that the orange thats highlighted in the north bay, thats where theres even more fog, tougher visibility, sometimes down to hundreds of feet overnight, but look at Solano County thats the advisory for this morning. Anywhere south of there moves well, no crashes or incidents. A smooth drive for the freeways. This is new video posted online of a home in montecito at the height of tuesday mornings deadly slide. Within minutes mud levels in this home rose to waist high. Other homes were completely washed away. 17 people are confirmed dead, 17 more unaccounted for. Highway 101 remains closed and now is expected to reopen monday at the earliest. 100 homes are now listed as destroyed, although the number is still fluctuating. Many others were damaged. Some of the stories emerging are heart breaking, people were caught completely unaware. A separate recently posted video shows how fast that debris was moving as it descended on to montecito residents. Oh, my god. Mom. Can you see that just wave of mud coming through that slide left people trapped, unable to escape the path. It has now left some family members wondering what happened to their loved ones, among those who are missing several older retirees and Young Children who didnt have the chance to escape. In some cases relatives simply want answers. I dont know how far she could have been swept. I dont know. I dont know where she is. Thats a man whose 69yearold mother was among those unaccounted for. Also among the missing, the brother and father of a 14yearold girl whose rescue on tuesday we showed it to you here made headlines across the world. She is still in the hospital this morning. And new this morning, more bay area search and rescue teams are now in Southern California assisting in that search for mud slide victims. Marin countys urban search and rescue team tweeted this photo before leaving last night for montecito. The 30person team expects to start searching this morning. Earlier yesterday members of the 129th rescue wing sent out photos of their rescue efforts in montecito. That team is based in moffett field. Stay with us for continuing coverage of these deadly mudslides. Nbc bay areas Anousha Rasta is in Santa Barbara county. You can follow us on twitter nbc bay area. The recall effort against the judge that sentenced brock turner is expected to move forward. Today in the bays kris sanchez joins us live in san jose with a look at what is next, good morning, kris. Reporter all of those signatures have to be verified by the Santa Clara County registrar of voters here and it sounds like there are quite a few of them that will have to be verified. The petition requirement is 58,000 signatures and nbc bay area sources tell us there could be almost double that. If enough of those signatures are verified, the ballot measure to recall judge aaron persky would go before voters in june. Supporters want persky off the bench for what they consider a lenient sentence for former stanford swimmer brock turner who was convicted of sexual assaulting an unconscious woman behind a campus dumpster in 2015 and other cases related to women. Persky sentenced turner to six months in jail while prosecutors were asking for six years. In a statement submitted to the registrar the judge in a statement to the registrar without referencing the turner case, the judge submitted this 198word statement to the registrar that reads in part, as a prosecutor i fought vigorously for victims, as a judge my role is to consider both sides. California law requires every judge to consider rehabilitation and probation for firsttime offenders. Its not always popular, but its the law and i took an oath to follow it without regard to Public Opinion or my opinions as a former prosecutor. Now, supporters of judge persky say that it is important for judges to have prosecutorial discretion, that is, to be able to decide whats right in any particular case. We will be here when members of the recall drive drop off the signatu signature. If you follow me on twitter i will tell you what brock turner is up to these days as well. Developing right now, police in berkeley are hoping someone can identify two men in this surveillance video. Now, police say the robbers may have been driving this white sedan, possibly a chevy impala. The final home standing on the famous eroding Pacifica Cliff is expected to finally come down this morning. Today in the bays pete suratos is live there right now. This is one of a dozen homes on that cliff that had to be demolished but this really is a part of a bigger problem here. Reporter good morning to you, marcus. Of course, yeah, that cliff side here in pacifica has taken a beating over the past couple years with the combination of heavy rains and the king tides but the home behind me here is this 500 block. It will be demolished like many of the others weve seen over the past couple years here in just a few hours but a couple years ago our crews were here with that homeowner when they tried to essentially save this home, they slid the home 15 away from the cliff. Obviously that plan that they had in place did not work out, the owners finally selling the property to the city of pacifica last year and its going to be incorporated into the esplanade beach trail. The cliff started eroding back in 1998, it caused more than a dozen homes to fall on the beach or eventually crews bulldozed them to prevent that from happening. A new report out of uc san diego cited cities most vulnerable to coastal erosion which included places such as daly city, Martins Beach and point reyes in the bay area. The home in pacifica behind me is set to be demolished at 8 00 a. M. Pete suratos for today in the bay. That will be something we will have to monitor over the next several months with more rain on the way. Right now at 5 09 we are getting a chance to dry out but still low clouds. A live look in san jose, clear visibility here, but we are going to have those temperatures that are going to start out in the low 50s, even some upper 40s in starts of the north bay. A fairly mild start with a fairly mild afternoon. We will get more sunshine after all of this fog clears out, by late morning and in napa today expect a high of 58 degrees, also 58 in oakland and 61 in palo alto. San jose will see a high of 60 degrees and 56 degrees today in San Francisco. We are talking about a sunny weekend ahead and also breaking down todays temperatures. Thats coming up in about four minutes. Mike, the roadways, are they still calm . Yes. Thats the green, i will show it to you, the picture tells a thousand words so i saved a few. Looking over here the travel times are great as well. 580, 680 coming out of the altamonte pass no major issues just the overnight construction typical through the area, they should be on the move pretty soon. I want to show you getting over toward the north bay, despite the following the travel times are not a problem. Great drive for 101. Watch Solano County and also coming down through the carquinez and benicia bridge. We will show you the san mateo bridge, the live camera shows a smooth easy light drive of traffic, but you see the streetlights, ive seen almost a curtain drop down as some mist and maybe the clouds drifting through the area show the lights a lot more clearly and that means there may be some fog drifting around here as well. Coming up next on today in the bay, a louisiana teacher who was handcuffed at a Dramatic SchoolBoard Meeting speaks out. Thats where the hurt came in, when i actually saw the video and the realization that my students were going to see the video. This morning her exclusive emotional interview after her arrest video went viral. Plus mikes travel times look fine now but i will show you a new way to fly to work when today in the bay continues. Were coming up on 5 14 right now as you get ready to head out the door, its still mostly clear in san jose. Here is a look at the roads and things are looking good there, but weve seen some fog in and around the bay area. Lets go to campbell for our temperature trend that will start out in the low 50s at 9 00, now we should be in the upper 50s for the day, but our High Temperature reaching into the low 60s. A little bit warmer than normal. We will get a lot more sunshine which we so desperately need at this point. We will talk about the weekend coming up. Kari, clear dry and a clear view for 101 through palo alto. The biggest deal is the bright billboard because there is not a lot of traffic. We will talk about whats affecting the traffic, you talked about fog, we will see how thats affecting folks. New this morning, a louisiana teacher arrested during the School Board Meeting is talking exclusively on today. This is the moment that got people talking. What are you doing . What are you doing . Wow. Now, she says all she did was question why the School Superintendent was getting the raise while teachers had not seen a pay increase in years. This morning on the today show she says that she was worried about how her students would react. I think the video later that night, thats where the hurt came in, when i actually saw the video and the realization that my students were going to see the video and i had to go to work the next day and i teach fifth and sixth graders, so i wasnt sure how they would feel about it. We will hear from her coming up at 7 00 a. M. On the today show right after today in the bay. It is quarter after 5 00 right now. New this morning, no relief in sight for the bay areas housing crisis. A new report says san jose will be the hottest Housing Market in the whole country in 2018. We look through some of the new numbers from zillow. Home values are set to spike dramatically up nearly 9 . The value of an average home in san jose is 1. 1 million. Thats average. The most expensive in the nation. Zillow includes the east bay and the San Francisco market as well. It will be the fifth hottest in the country with home values going up nearly 4 this year. The reason of course is the tech industry, it continues to boom. Especially in san jose. Scott mcgrew joins us now. If you have google planning that mega campus downtown, now we have word that adobe will build a fourth tower at its downtown san jose headquarters as well. Adobe bought a plot of land between highway 87 and almaden boulevard next to its current tower complex so it can add another 3,000 workers. So as marcus was saying thats 3,000 more people that are going to need homes in san jose. Now, one reality check, the last time adobe built a tower when they went from two towers to three we were in the middle of the recession and just a few days before the big Ribbon Cutting they laid off a lot ofc un Ribbon Cutting as ax inappropriate. We figured we would wrap up our reports here at ces with something you deal with in the morning every day, a horrible commute, right . Well, imagine instead of cars going through the bay area freeways, how about drones like this one rising above bay area freeways. This company velocopter will make drones like this one probably three to five years out, completely rec trick, completely autonomous with a range of about 17 miles an hour. Now, tonight at 6 00 we will give you a first look at how the whole thing works and imagine a commute where you just rise above it all. Thats the latest from here in las vegas, scott, i will send it back to you. Thank you, scott. I assume a lot of people would say my commute is already 17 miles an hour. Where am i going to park that in the parking lot. On top of the building. Why not. There has never been a better time to be a kid at least when it comes to weekly allowance. Thats right, clean the stove top there. These young people are raking in the catch these days. According to a new survey from an allowance tracker app called rooster money, young people between the ages of 4 and 14 look at this kid received an average weekly allowance of 8. 74 that amounts to 454 over 2017. The older the kids were the more they got. 14yearolds averaged about 12 a week. And those kids were actually really working. They were. I would pay that. Laura, you and i were talking about how much the tooth fairy brings nowadays, i was like i think 5 is the going rate. I remember doing all that stuff and i never got paid. Kudos to the kids. Right. Negotiators. We said we were going to tax that money, right . They do get taxed. I want to move into her neighborhood. They have a 401 k going on. Golden wings. Were getting up the kids this morning and its like, okay, get to work, you have to clean up your mess. Its going to be a day where we do have to wear a nice warm jacket, also we might have to put the hood on because we have had some fog and mist and drizzle around the bay area. Here is a live look in san rafael. Ive been watching the north bay because thats where the fog has been, creating the lowest visibility in spots, but as of right now in san rafael looks pretty good as you head into San Francisco. Weve seen some spots with visibility dropping down to a quarter of a mile or less and then for parts of the east bay and the trivalley its been very spotty. Just watch out and allow extra time to get to work today. A nice and cool start, mid 50s with our highs in the south bay reaching up to 62 degrees in East San Jose and 61 degrees in los gatos. For the east bay 62 degrees in danville and 59 degrees in hayward. Its going to also be a nicer day because we will get more sunshine so even with these mid to upper 50s i think it will feel better. In santa rosa 57 degrees, more clouds there and even a slight chance of rain for santa rosa and areas farther to the north. Going hiking in the south bay we start out with patchy fog as you get ready to head out temperatures in the low 50s, as the day goes along its going to be nicer with breezy winds. Going through the forecast we will have the slight chance of rain santa rosa through mend se seen know county. A system looks to bring in more widespread rain and this one will be a colder system that could bring in a lot of snow for the sierra. As we look at our forecast over the next seven days San Francisco stays in the upper 50s and a mix of sun and clouds. For the inland areas above normal. By monday up to 66 degrees. Mike is saying the roads are clear but the visibility is not. You and i have been talk about this. The visibility on the roadways may be a factor. Over here on this map you see theres nothing really a factor. The biggest deal is the city names that we popped out there or maybe the highway shields anywhere south of the bay bridge. North of here, though, Solano County chp gave an earlier advisory for that area, you still see the fog ring length thats the orange yellow highlighting indicating caution on the roadways. Also looking at a crash over on the shoulder at American Canyon but slowing as youre approaching highway 29 coming down through the area for westbound 80. An easy drive toward the bay bridge, no delays for these travel times. The bay bridge itself, the camera shows that these clouds came in and hovered around. Its not really fog, its not affecting gs the drivers right here but its around the area. More news this morning on today in the bay including solving an aviation mystery. After the plane went down in march of 2014 crews combed the indian ocean for three years. Eventually they called off the search one year ago this month. A new call this morning from the red cross, there is an urgent need for blood donations, winter normally is a slow time when it comes to blood donors. Happening later today muni kicks off the celebration with a News Conference at city hall. What a great opportunity for them. Its going to be a little bit warmer today so we can enjoy that on this thursday. Good morning and thank you for joining us, im marcus washington. And im laura garcia. I want to check when the suns warmer arrival will come with kari right now. It seems like its been forever since weve seen the sunshine. We are going to see some today after all the clouds and the fog rolls out of here and its a milder start because of the blanket of the clouds that were getting right now. So temperatures are in the low to mid 50s, as you get ready to head out the door. As we look at todays High Temperatures its going to be pretty much where we were yesterday, looking at some upper 50s and low 60s and just a couple of degrees warmer in a few spots. Livermore 61 degrees and 60 in san jose, but that sunshine will make all the difference. We will talk about that and whats ahead for the weekend, your weekend forecast in about six minutes, mike gets you on the roads with the backup. The backup, but, look, standard nights not the bright lights, clouds in the area. Not necessarily fog and what i mean by that is this layer of clouds is at the streetlight level and above. Behind laura and marcus you might catch a glimpse of the clouds above the roadway. The backup and the metering lights at the bay bridge, if you do encounter fog that would be in Solano County. Use standard lights or your fog lights but dont put them on high beams, guys. Back to you. Now to the latest developments out of Southern California. Today shows Gadi Schwartz live in montecito with Recovery Efforts under way. Its going to be another difficult day for searchers. They are going to be going through houses like this, a lot of the searches will take them inside. They say theyve searched about 75 of the area so now its going to be house to house checking to see if anybody might have survived and might be trapped inside. You can see this home right here has been cleared, coming up on the today show we also have a terrifying look at the moments where this wall of destruction swept through, again, about 75 of this general area has been searched. Right now theres still 17 people missing. Guys, back to you. It is just tragic as people try to wait. We will stay on top of this story all morning long as it develops. To see gadis full report its on the today show coming up after today in the bay. This morning the faa is investigating another close call at San Francisco international airport. This time it was an aeromexico flight that nearly landed on a runway where another flight was about to take off. Today in the bays bob redell live at sfo with the ongoing problem thats been happening there. Bob . Reporter good morning. This is the third time since july a commercial airliner has either landed when they werent supposed to or almost landed at the wrong runway back there at sfo behind me, the most recent incident taking place this past tuesday morning. The faa says aeromexico flight 688 was cleared to land on runway 28 r. The pilot of that aircraft confirmed 28 r to air Traffic Control but that pilot instead started to line up with runway 28 l where a virgin American Airline was set to take off to hawaii. Air Traffic Control noticed that mistake when aeromexico was a mile out and about 20 seconds away from the Virgin America airplane. A controller instructed the aircraft to pull up, circle around and land safely which it did. Mike mccarron says, yes, this was close but there was more than enough time for aeromexico to correct and that the system did work. All the backup systems kicked into place, controllers watched, saw that he wasnt lined up properly, they gave the command to go around, he went around and landed safely. Im pretty confident. We have had a good Safety Record here. Reporter last july pilots on an air canada flight mistook the runway mistook the taxi way for the runway next to it and dipped to just 59 feet aboveground before pulling up to attempt another landing. This photo that you see on your screen illustrates just how close that flight came to colliding with the other aircraft on the ground. Then in october there was another air canada flight that hand at sfo despite attempts at air Traffic Control to wave them off because there was another aircraft still on the runway. The pilots of that air canada flight they were having radio problems at the time. Reporting live in millbrae, just across from sfo, bob redell, today in the bay. It is 5 35 right now, u. S. They cant really put a stop to what i cloos to do. I will go and see my family. Im not putting myself in danger by going. Some popular tourist destinations are under a level 3 warning, that includes Puerto Vallarta and mexico city. Travelers should reconsider their plans to those places. Angry parents will be attending the san joses Alum Rock School district special Board Meeting tonight. They plan to discuss hiring a new lawyer and selling bonds but the districts spending is what parents are worried about. As we reported last june a state audit found possible fraud and misspending on Construction Projects that are yet to become reality. This month a county auditor began helping the district with their finances. Governor jerry brown is selling his record setting 1 13 well billion budget for the next fiscal year. Brown unveiled that plan yesterday. 4. 6 billion for transportation projects with the money largely coming from the recent 12 cent t tax. Brown wants to add 5 million to that rainy day fund. Now, were also learning that california had some change to spare, 6. 1 billion to be exact. The additional money is coming from you, taxpayers. Continuing coverage now, a new report detailing why the oroville dam failed nearly one year ago. A Forensic Team said neglect to repair damage played a role but also flaws rooted in the dams initial design. The slab had from the beginning in 1969 there were cracks. At no point in the last 50 years did anybody go back and look at that design and say we have problems here and we have to do something about it. Also this morning the state department of Water Resources has another new director. This is the departments third leader since the dam failed that forced nearly 200,000 people to evacuate. A followup now on the proposal to increase bridge toll prices in the bay area. A live look at the bay bridge. Look how busy that toll plaza is this morning. Zq just took a major st forward. Transit leaders unanimously recommended putting it before voters in june. The increase would generate an extra 125 million a year and it would raise toll prices, ready . 9 for the bay bridge and 8 for others. I was kind of dating myself in the newsroom saying when i remembered it was 2, mike. Look, i mean, the price continues to rise because look how much pleasure people are taking from waiting here at the bay bridge toll plaza. Supply and demand, folks. We have to maintain the bridges, just like we talked about the oroville dam and maintenance there as well. Safe roadways are the big concern. Also viewing the roadways. The clouds are right above the driving level here so these drivers actually seeing the roadway just fine. Our view of the roadway is really obscured by the low clouds through emeryville, now becoming a fog issue farther nurt. Overnight chp said slap know county was the toughest drive. Well, the ones i read were not accurate, but one of the things that ive learned is that this is a conversation that obviously needs to be had. I have my own side of this story, but i believe in, you know, these people that have been underrepresented getting their stories out enough that i will hold back things that i could say just because i believe in it that much and if i have to take a knock because im not going to, you know, try and, you know, actively refute things, then i will, because i believe in it that much. For wearing a times up pin to the golden globes. The movement supports women who speak out about abuse. In politics california may send fewer republicans to washington. Scott, youve been running the numbers and they look grim for the gop. There are at least 11 congressional seats in california currently held by republicans. He announced he will retire at the end of the year, wont run for reelection. He barely won his election last night in what should have been a republican strong hold. Democrats need 24 more seats to flip the house. California could give them 11. Other news this morning, President Trump said during a press Conference Wednesday it was unlikely he would meet with special prosecutor robert mueller. By this morning trump had tweeted out several angry tweets, one implying the american fbi tried to influence the election and another that claims the nifisa Court Allowed spying on his campaign. That one not impossible. They write wire taps for Law Enforcement that are looking for foreign agents. One way or the other the president is on a tear this morning. We get up and he says, well, cant do anything about that, and i run to the front and i see that it is actually the mountain looks like its on fire. I walked out back, you know, where we share a fence line and the neighbors out back their houses are gone, just gone. So it is as devastating as it can be. Were going to come together and were going to do what great americans do all the time. Were going to help each other. Were going to help each other out wherever needed. The full episode airs at 4 00 p. M. Right here on nbc bay area. Still trying to look for so many victims right now, 17 people still missing. So many people, so much destruction happening there, but like oprah said we will Work Together and thats something we saw with the wildfires, weve seen them now with this. So many different situations. Of course the weather timeline will play a big factor in the recovery in Southern California. It looks like for a little while we do have dry weather to take a break. As we take a live look outside in emeryville weve seen that fog rolling on by and at times the visibility drops off quite a bit. You do have to put that in your plan this morning as you get ready to head to work or school, at times you may have to slow it down. Now, the sevenday forecast is up at the bottom of the screen and we will have a few more days of some drier and warmer weather, but as we get a look at our fog and visibility right now this shows the visibility in mild and its only down to a quarter of a mile in napa. Clear visibility is 10, were seeing that going down the peninsula from san carlos to mountain view, but then there is a little patchy fog moving through san jose and the trivalley. Right now our temperatures are in the low to mid 50s, upper 40s for the north bay, fairfield the coolest now at 43 degrees, our High Temperatures today are going to be pretty much the same as yesterday, maybe just a degree or two warmer, but that sunshine is going to make all the difference as we will have some much more comfortable weather. As we go through the day in oakland it does start out with some clouds, some low 50s but then mid 50s today with some times of sunshine. So getting dressed this morning you want to make sure you have on a nice warm jacket and long sleeves will keep you comfortable as we go throughout the day. Now we are going to be tracking a slight chance of rain for santa rosa and farther to the north, but the rest of the bay area will stay dry. And then the nice weekend ahead. One thing the weather app may not be showing you today is that we will have some rounds of rain moving in next week and it starts out on tuesday, we will see some more of the wet weather and possibly some widespread rain heading into the middle to end of next week. So right now we are looking pretty good with partly to mostly cloudy skies, highs in the mid 50s, for the inland areas highs in the 60s today. As the volume of the commute is starting to build subtly, but i want to call this out. South bay, peninsula looking great. Southbound 680 we see slowing pop up and a crash is reported to chp. Theyre heading out towards southbound 680 at sunol boulevard, sounds like a big rig is involved in this crash moving over to the right shoulder but still in lanes slowly getting over there, that might be why traffic is slow. Getting in out of the altamonte pass traffic moves well but more traffic means nor folks heading south for 680. Coming across the carquinez bridge, westbound 80 slows up, looks like something is going on past highway 4. Its possible its that volume of traffic kicking in but i will track that unusually slow pattern approaching highway 4 into hercules. Towards the bay bridge its smooth. We do have that fog in Solano County and the bay bridge toll plaza may have a new crash. Oakland reports a crash north 880, at 7th there is a crash reported. Chp should arrive, motorcycle may be involved so im very concerned about that. Coming up an intense search for missing twins here in california. The Reason Police are having trouble finding them. Its warmer, but some people cant even really see that far outside of the door and the window because we have had some dense fog rolling across parts of the bay area and as we step out here is a look at some of that visibility down to a quarter of a mile or less around napa and for halfmoon bay weve seen at times the visibility there at about a quarter of a mile. So this fog is kind of drifting for those inland valleys as well.
