Reporter the El Paso Walmart now a killing field. 20 murdered, two dozen wounded. A horrific scene playing out more than 1500 miles away. People started running, they started pushing us out the back door out the allie in the back because they didnt want us coming out the back. They didnt know where the shooter was or how many there was. Reporter it was a lone gunman connor betts wrapped in body was gunned down by police. Why . We do not have that answer at this time. Reporter investigators also still trying to piece together a motive in el paso. We are also treating this as a domestic terrorist case. Reporter the suspect, 21yearold Patrick Crusius was captured by responding officers after the attack. He was forthcoming with information. He basically didnt hold anything back. How and why are important, but for most the stay strong, dayton. Reporter in ohio and texas, the focus is on those lost and their grieving communities. Its torn the fabric of this community, but it will be repaired and it will not define us. Reporter even if others fear, it defines the anger and violence so prevalent across our country right now. Some perspective here. I was talking with the mayor this morning who says his Community Must first get through 20 funerals before they can begin to think about healing. Jay gray, nbc news, el p so far this year there have been 253 Mass Shootings in the united states. Thats according to data from the Nonprofit Group gun violence archives that started collecting data in 2013. It gathers data every day from Law Enforcement organize organizations as well as local, state and federal governments. Here are some of those numbers for you. Within the last week there have been nine Mass Shootings. The gun violence archive defines a mass shooting as any incident where four or more people were shot or killed. That does not include the shooter. Five of the nine Mass Shootings took place within the last three days. They include dayton, ohio, el paso, texas, two shootings in illinois, and another one in virginia. President trump briefly met with supporters today to talk about those two shootings. Mr. Trump says he spoke with the attorney general and the fbi director to discuss what can be done. Hate has no place in our country. And were going to take care of it. We have done much me than most administrations, and its really not talked about very much, but weve done actually a lot. But perhaps more has to be done. The president praised officers in both cities for their quick response. A growing number of Congressional Democrats are urging Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell to call a special session so the senate can approve a new back ground checked bill thats already cleared the house. Despite what the president is saying about the shootings, democratic president ial candidate beto orourke is blaming him for what happened in el paso. The president s language, his rhetoric has produced the kinds of hate crimes that we saw in el paso yesterday, but weve been seeing across this country. Theyve been on the rise for each one of the last three years. So we cannot act as though this were just some kind of Natural Disaster or a matter of course for this country or the new normal for the united states. There is a very real cause to this, anprumis part of that. Orourke left the campaign trail in knnovato, yesterday. He praise the city for donating blood and food. While the two Mass Shootings come just as gilroy marks a week since its own mass shooting, people are struggling to comprehend what actually happened to them. R im doing it bse in san Jose Christian juarez helped organize a car wash fundraiser for families locally, but couldnt help thinking of the shootings since and others felt the same way. You can see there are three different machines where you can two where you can get a clipper card and one where you can get a paper card. This one right here is going to be phased out. The idea is to start transitioning all bart riders to the clipper card, which can actually be used for a bunch of different transit systems in the bay area. Now, this is a plan that was announced earlier this year. Tomorrow is the start of this fourstation phase out as part of a pilot program. 19th street station in oakland is the first that will stop selling the paper tickets. In two weeks embarcadero station here in San Francisco as well as powell street two weeks after that. Downtown berkeley will be added toward the end of september. Transitioning to the clipper card should be relatively easy for regular bart riders, but one commuter said it needs to be easy for all passengers aboard bart to get the clipper card, including tourists. Well, i used to use the paper card and this is just so much a there are metal tickets or cards you get like this. The only thing is i would say youve got to make it easier to get this card. Reporter now, it does cost a onetime fee of 3 to buy the clipper card when riders can load it up with money for their fare. And according to bart, they actually charge people who use the paper tickets 50 cents per ride. So according to the way they figure, if riders simply start transitioning to the clipper card, it will actually be paid off for those riders after three round trips on bart. And north bay temperatures mostly in the 80s. So lets talk about the high clouds. Well begin to see approach out of the south heading into the afternoon, tropical clouds off the coast of baja, thats going to drift to the north during the day tomorrow. No showers, but the combination of the cloud cover and the sea breeze will probably bring our temperatures down a little bit. That sea breeze turns stronger tuesday and wednesday which is going to lead to the downward trend in temperatures. San francisco highs in the low 60s around mid week. Probably with some drizzle as well over the next few mornings. And for the valleys, comfortably cool, good air quality.
