In the Marina District expect a high of 69 degrees while the north bay reaches into the mid to upper 80s. We will see some changes ahead. Through the weekend well see High Pressure heating up our temperatures and well get a little bit of a break on sunday as that storm system passes to our north but then we start to see our winds shift once again for tuesday and wednesday, creating more hot weather and also breezy winds which will increase our fire danger. This is the last weekend of summer and its going to feel like were in the middle of summer, with some low to mid90s and then by early next week we are going to get even hotter with our temperatures peaking on tuesday. Were talking about it, you know, everyone really is less snow, changing water supply, warmer temperatures that were feeling, all of this having a big impact on our Atmospheric Rivers in the bay area. Today in the bays meteorologist kari hall has more on why a lack of frozen precipitation in the winter might translate to a bigger impact in the summer. Our winter rainfall is the focus of todays climate in crisis series. You may hear us talk about rain coming from an Atmospheric River or pineapple express. Its a long, narrow region of clouds and rain rolling from hawaii across the pacific into california. And the position of the jet stream can guide where that Atmospheric River flows. Now researchers are seeing a change in the transporter of our water supply. The air temperatures are getting warmer by four degrees. It may not sound like a lot, but the temperatu difference now and in the coming years has huge ramifications on the weather in northern california. That means that instead of snow falling in the sierra, the precipitation could come down mostly as rain, and that Sierra Snowpack provides most of our water storage for those long, dry summer months. I think more importantly on a deeper level it affects our water supply. It affects our ecosystem and suggests in another way the kind of water issues that well face in the future may be different than in the past, even if the overall amount of precipitation doesnt change very much, because if more of it is falling as liquid rain rather than solid snow that changes the characteristics of the water supply we have moving forward. Scientists say if we continue with business as usual and not make an effort to retuesdduce o environmental impact, sierra snow will become a thing of the past. That would be hard to see. 5 25. This morning San Jose State Police continue their search for a gunman who shot out several windows at the mld library putting the area on lockdown. Reporter we know the campus alert that was issued last night has been lyft elifted but the c tape is still here and we dont know of any arrests at this point in this unnerving incident on campus. The two windows that were shot out on the seventh and eighth floors. There are several windows shot out in the parking structure across the street. Although police say they dont know where the shooter was firing from, it is highly unlikely that that person was on the ground level. People who were in the area described the chaos. We heard sirens coming from multiple directions. Once we got to the stoplight here, there were some cars parked right here across the street from the library. She went and ran into the street, waved down a cop car and then after that i just saw a bunch of cops coming. Reporter this happened a day after an unrelated incident in which san jose state place arrested a student for allegedly making threats on social media, investigated by Sunnyvale Department of public safety. The 17yearold student was taken into custody, he had a loaded semiautomatic handgun, ammunition and a knife. He had more at his home once the investigation continued there. Reporter in about an hour and a half you have about 400 nurses at alameda hospitals behind me in san leandro hospital not too far from here walking out to protest what they call unfair labor practices. Could you see some of the nurses are already up here, theyre getting a head start, going to be walking out at 7 00, accusing their employer of failing to bargain in good faith. Another strike is for 24 hours and coincidentally nurses at San Ramon Regional Medical Center are walking out as part of a nationwide 24hour strike. This strike is separate from the one in alameda, involves 6,500 nurses from california, arizona, florida, illinois. The nurses here and in arizona and florida, theyre protesting their employer tenet health care. According to Business Insider theyve been negotiating for a new contract for over a year and a half. They want better nurse retention and nursetopatient ratios. A spokesman for tenet tells the insider theyve been negotiating in good faith and disappointed nursesre walking out. You have the one in san ramon, thats going to be a 24hour walkout and coincidentally the other one here unrelated but similar taking place in alameda and san leandro. Lack of housing is a major issue in every corner of the bay area, but san jose mayor is planning to keep developers fees low to try to build more highrises. Its all running into opposition, however. Its an ongoing 2012 program the city council will soon vote to extend it but some labor and housing advocates are against it claiming developers will pocket millions in subsidies for luxury housing. We should not follow the washington, d. C. , donald trump model of subsidizing billionaires. In a statement, mayor sam liccardo says more housing will not get done unless the city reduces the cost to build. As cases of vaping sicknesses rise, the cdc is getting a clearer picture of the victims. More than half are under the age of 25 and threequarters of the cases are men.
