Nice recovery and some near normal temperatures with some sunshine expected in the forecast. As you head out on the roads, i want to give you a view of the xhat bridge san mateo bridge. Well see a smooth flow of traffic, hopefully that continues looking at the traffic maps, as we see this live view at the san mateo bridge flowing smoothly there. There have been a couple of issues, ill check on those and see if it will slow you down for your drive, coming up in a few minutes. Breaking news this morning, several people have just been rescued from a warehouse fire in oakland. Today in the bays thom jensen live at the scene with the very latest for us. Thom . Reporter well, i can tell you that everybody did get out of this warehouse fire. This is at the apgar warehouse here in oakland at apgar and west street. There was what weve heard from witnesses on the scene, and people who actually lived in this warehouse is that there was as many as eight People Living in here, even though the warehouse, and this is directly from oakland Fire Department, was red tagged back in november, telling them that nobody is supposed to be living in here. I talked to three people who were actually living in there, and giving rent they said to the owner on and off for the past several months even after it was red tagged. They said at about 2 30, they thought that they smelled smoke, and possibly a fire in an upstairs, we cant even see an upstairs in this building right now, we dont know if that collapsed and there was two people upstairs, a man and a woman, and one man decided to go in and try to rescue them, and the woman who was trapped in there, he said, was pregnant, and he was able to get her out. This is what they had to say. We were in the front of the building and we heard her screaming, and yes, there wasnt any fire at that point but the smoke was completely filling the area upstairs where she was. Didnt know if they were going to make it out. I didnt know if they were going to make it out. Reporter a pretty compelling sound from the people who were living in there. They said they did have some concerns over the past several months, had been talking to the owner because the doors and the windows were they said covered with all sorts of garbage, paper and other debris. They said as a security measure to try to keep people from getting in, breaking in to the building, to stealing some of the more valuable items that were inside, but at any rate, at this hour, we know that everybody did make it out. This one woman who is described as being pregnant and having minor burns, according to the battalion chief on scene here was transported to the hospital. Everybody else was okay, did not need to go to the hospital. We dont know what her condition is at this point. He said it was not lifethreatening and her friends and cotenants in this building said they thought she would be all right, too, although they described her burns as a little more serious than that. One thing that you know detectives will be looking into is what the status of this building was. Was the owner actually renting to people, this harkens back to the ghostship fire three years ago in oakland where 36 people died, similar situation, electrical problems. They thought that the tenants thought that this might have been an electrical fire. They smelled what smelled like an electrical fire, wires burning and then this fire broke out, and but everybody did get out safe. Six people at least as many as eight people according to the tenants living in this building all out safe except for one woman in the hospital. Also breaking the coast guard searching for a tour helicopter believed to be carrying seven people has been missing off the hocoast of hawa. The search is happening near the island of kauai, just west of oahu. When the chopper didnt return the company contacted authorities. We dont know who the tourists are on board so far and no distress signals have been received. Also breaking this morning, at least 15 people dead after a plane crashed in kazhakstan shortly after takeoff. 98 people were on board. 50 of them are now hospitalized. Investigators at the scene say the plane hit a concrete fence and a twostory building just after the plane lost altitude. 5 05. Now to a live look at capitol hill with negotiations over the impeachment trial in washington at a standstill. President trump is lashing out at democrats calling them liars and hypocrites. A south bay family is grieving as a woman is killed and police say they need your help finding whoever did it. She died after a robbery just outside of her home in the south bay. The victim is a 45yearold woman who died this past Christmas Eve after being beaten during a robbery late last week outside her home in san jose, as you mentioned. We did speak with her husband, his name is tam lu wong. He tells us his wife was a loving wife and mother. Both moved to vietnam three years ago. On the night of december 19th, xuan returned home from her job as a cook, pulled into the driveway on the couples home on stage hand drive in south san jose. When she didnt come in after a few minutes her family went outside, found her seriously hurt on the street, her purse missing, she survived several nights in the hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries this past tuesday night, as i mentioned, Christmas Eve. He wants to find out who did it and he wants to find out what actually happened to her. Reporter here is that Surveillance Footage from a neighbors camera i mentioned. It shows a car backing up to the home at the approximate time of the attack. You can see someone running away from the home and the car takes off. Again, police have not made any arrests or identified any suspects, thats where you come in. If you know anything, San Jose Police would love to hear from you. Now to a followup, three 16yearold boys from Dublin High School who were killed in a christmas night car crash. These are pictures of the twins, mark and michael eurista. Family members say the sophomores and friend were killed when the car they were riding in slammed into an oak tree on foothill road in pleasanton. Two other teens survived the crash, but theyre in the hospital. Friends who visited the crash site yesterday say its hard to believe. I just saw them like two weeks ago, we were just talking about how i want to move back out here and be like old times, having fun and then it just hits you that theyre not here no more, all three. The twins mother says she believes the teens were practicing driving on the twolane road and their best friend, who is unlicensed, was behind the wheel. A vigil will be held at Dublin High School on sunday. Now to our continuing coverage of building more housing next to Transit Centers across the state. State senator scott weiners senate bill 50 is getting strong reaction on both sides and protransit group has found itself in the middle of that debate. The examiner reports earlier this morning a San Francisco transit riders group publicly supported supervisor gordon mahers resolution to oppose the bill until it includes transfer as well. Weiner pushed back said no housing until infrastructure is perfect doesnt work. The group is backing off saying it supports the bill but also changes to include more money for transit. That bill is up for Committee Vote in sacramento next month. In mountain view, voter also decide whether homeless peoples rvs should be banned from narrow streets. Its an issue popping up in cities across the bay area. According to the mercury news, Election Officials received over 4,000 signatures calling for a vote on that issue. You may recall back in september, the City Council Approved an ordinance banning rvs from streets. However, opponents pushed for the referendum to block the rule from taking effect until voters actually get to weigh in. Happening now, travel troubles for drivers up and down the state. As you head out on the roads, a big heads up for you if youre about to step out, as we look at the east bay, we are seeing a couple of traffic incidents in the east bay from walnut creek over toward oakland, but the big one will be getting across the bay bridge, where we have a car on fire, westbound i80 at the Treasure Island onramp, and so this is really causing a big backup. Elsewhere, we are seeing not too much of a slowdown in the south bay. Were just checking out whats happening in squaw valley, about 7 degrees this morning. It will get milder, going into tomorrow, but then by sunday, some more snow headed our way, and that will bring our season total up to 151 inches, more on top of that, going into the weekend. For the bay area, were dry today, as well as tomorrow, but then the next storm system coming in will bring some scattered bay area rain, but then some light sierra snow. Only looking at about one to five inches of snow with that system coming in, and the next week, well stay dry once again. But as we look at the models and what theyre showing for that next storm system, its showing about a quarter inch of rain for much of the bay area, and then we go back to some dry weather as we wrap up 2019, headed into the new year. Well have slightly warmer than normal weather with highs up to 60 degrees on new years day. As we get ready to head out on the roads, here is a live look at the bay bridge, it has been slowing down. We are close to freezing in the south county and even if its not freezing, you may have some frost coating your car this morning. Today in the bays thom jensen is live out at the scene, and thom, what can you tell us, still an active scene this morning. Reporter it really is. Weve got a lot of firefighters, a lot of equipment out of here from oakland Fire Department. You can see them dumping water on the structure still. Theres been a couple of stubborn spots inside the warehouse that just theyve been having trouble putting out the flames there. I can tell you, i learned a little bit about whats in there, which might be adding fuel or providing fuel for the fire. The owner of this john sabers according to people who lived in there they said he lived in there with them, and that he liquidates estates, buys up materials, antiques and other things from estates and then sells them. Thats one of his businesses, and a lot of that stuff was inside the warehouse, whether it be furniture or electronics, and they said there was also a lot of garbage that was stacked up against doors and windows, which made it hard for them to get out as kind of a security measure to keep people out from stealing things, and this is what they had to say about rescuing a man and a woman who were in the upstairs of this building at 2 30, when it started on fire. We didnt know if they were going to make it out. I didnt know if they were going to make it out. Reporter she did get out, that woman with some minor burns, according to the battalion chief on scene here. Was taken to a hospital. We heard from the tenants that woman was also pregnant, at the hospital now. We dont tea know her condition but the firefighter, the battalion chief said she should make a full recovery and he thought that the injuries were minor. Now as far as this building goes, we have not been able to talk to the owner. Im trying to reach out to him. I just got his phone number, when i tried to find out what was in there, why he was still renting to people, because as i told you in the earlier hit, this was red tagged back in november. The Fire Department said theres not supposed to be anybody living in there. Only on nbc bay area, the sister of a man killed by a fallen redwood tree in muir woods is speaking out about the moments before what theyre calling a freak accident. I noticed his shoe, my brothers, and then i knew that something was very wrong. We just unfortunately happened to be at that wrong time at the wrong place. That area where the tree fell is now closed to the public, but the rest of the park is now open. 5 35. We know this morning the name of the father who died earlier this week along the coast. Officials say 53yearold paul lewis saved his 10yearold daughter from the water off of carmel river state beach. She was floating out to sea in an inflatable device. Crews rescued both of them but lewis died. Lewis daughter was taken to the hospital with possible hypothermia. No word on her condition. This morning were getting a clearer picture how the deadly camp fire that tore through butte county last year is changing the population landscape. New data of the department of finance shows more than 10,000 people moved out of the area, many relocating to other cities in the county and state outside the affected cities of paradise, and concao. Amplifier was the deadliest fire in the states history. Flames killed 86 people, displacing nearly 36,000 and destroying almost 15,000 homes. This weekend, south Bay Transportation is getting a makeover just in time for the new year. Vta workers are prepping for a new Service Rollout starting tomorrow around Santa Clara County when people will see 3,300 new bus stop signs, a new light rail line and improved routes. Vta says people can expect shorter wait times as well. All bus and light rail rides will be free starting tomorrow and through the end of the year. All sounds like good news. Yes. Heading out hiking in muir woods expect a high of 58 degrees today and then tomorrow a high of 54 degrees, slightly cooler and that chance of rain on sunday in the trivalley. Were also going to get sun shoo shine for today and tomorrow but by sunday mostly cloudy skies and at times those clouds dropping some rain, only reaching 53 degrees. If youre going to the sierra this weekend, we have some fairly good travel conditions, but there will be some more snow coming down on sunday. So if you can get there today or tomorrow, you can watch that snow fall on sunday and its not a good day to drive back to the bay area so if you can, maybe stick it out til monday and looking at napa valley this weekend well see temperatures today reaching near 60 degrees, upper 50s tomorrow and only 50 degrees for a High Temperature on sunday. Police say they were escorted out of the mall, but they didnt say why. And thats when several fights started. Then the teenagers left and one person was taken to the hospital, and no one else was hurt. A followup for you right now, 3,000 nurses working for Santa Clara County hospitals now have a contract deal. The Union Representing the nurses say that it has agreed to a tentative agreement this week with county officials. That deal promises competitive wages, hours and safer working conditions. This comes after the nurses voted to go on strike last week. With the new year comes new laws for california drivers so Pay Attention as 2020 comes around. The most important is the new real i. D. , october youll need the real i. D. Drivers license or i. D. Card to get on domestic flights or military bases. So try to make that dmv appointment soon. Speaking of appointments, a new law makes it illegal for anyone to try to sell a dmv appointment. Federal and state leaders say independent contractors do the same work as employees but since theyre freelancers they avoid paying taxes and worker benefits. The new law will put tougher restrictions on who can be independent contractors rather than employees starting january 1st. Business owners will have to decide whether they should hire contractors as employees. Some Small Businesses say they dont have enough money to make the changes. Happening today, San Francisco city leaders are tree cycling christmas trees. The annual tradition will happen at 11 00 this morning at San Franciscos civic center plaza, theyll put trees through a giant wood chipper to create fresh mulch. Maybe a better option will be to head to diridon station in san jose, whereas you can catch a ride to work, youre going to see temperatures in the upper 30s, and a cold start but it does lead in to a nice mild day, and weve been comparing our weather to what theyre feeling elsewhere across the country, because were the ones this time around feeling the cold temperatures, and then as we look out east, its still pretty warm but there is some cold air headed that way, just yesterday seeing some highs near 60 in chicago. Today theyre headed up to 42 degrees. Were going to see some upper 50s here so its starting to get a little bit better in the bay area, starting to feel milder, and all of the wet weather has since moved on so were going to continue on with more sunshine tomorrow, but then by sunday, there will be another quickmoving storm system coming in that will bring us the chance of showers on sunday, as well as some sierra snow. Most of this looks light for us, as well as the sierra, and then we go back to some dry weather for the rest of the year. Were going to see about a quarter inch of rain as that system moves in on sunday, and then its out of here by monday. Thats a live look at squaw valley. That was a look yesterday evening with a look at our current temperature, and its 6 degrees starting out this morning. Weve done pretty well in terms of snow for the central sierra, were at 105 of average so we are right where we should be for this time of year as well in terms of the Sierra Snowpack across much of the sierra. Looking at our forecast, some low 50s as we head into sunday, as that rain comes in, if youll be hosting some watch parties, you may be inside, and not able to really head outside very much throughout the day, and then into the rest of the forecast for the year and into the new year, were going to start to get a little bit milder here. As you head out on the roads and looking at our traffic maps, overall weve seen a pretty smooth flow of traffic on this friday, usually light commute but when you throw in the fact that its the holidays, we dont have as many cars on the roads, but where we have seen a couple of incidents, it hasnt caused a major backup. If you head walnut creek toward berkeley there is an incident on the road but its not slowing it down. Also looking at 280 in san jose, weve seen an accident there, just a single car, noninjury, so hopefully well continue to see that improving as well, looking live right now in dublin, were seeing a smooth flow of traffic on 580, and looking at the trivalley, drive times near normal, with the westbound 580 commute from grant line road to i680 taking 17 minutes, southbound 680 to 580 to vargas road takes about ten minutes. Happening now, firefighters in australia are trying to make headway on dozens of fires before a heat wave hits this weekend. Almost 1300 fires are still burning, and firefighters are battling those fires, 70 brush and grass fires across australian state of new south wales. Recent rain this week helped some of their efforts. 33 of those fires are burning out of control. High temperatures and high winds are expected in the coming days. Theres a lot more ahead on today in the bay, including two bay area counties that have lost over 3,000 people in just a 12month period. This morning, investigators in berkeley are trying to figure out who fired gunshots, prompting a lot of phone calls in to police dispatch. This happened around 7 30en in area durant avenue and telegraph avenue. When officers arrived they found evidence of a shooting but there were no victims or suspects. That area was shut down for most of the night while investigators searched for more clues. More charges against disgraced Film Producer harvey weinstein, hell stand trial in new york over rape charges next month. New allegations l. A. Prosecutors say lapd and Beverly Hills Police Brought eight investigators to them and now reviewing the cases. So far no new charges have been officially fire lly filed. Another car kras in l. A. This lasting only four minutes. Police say the quick fourminute chase began with a carjacking and ended with the suspect crashing right there headon into a police cruiser. The suspect jumped out of the car, they always do out of the drivers side window, ran before being tackled and held down by officers. New overnight a car slamming into a tribal hall in Riverside County take a look at this new video. At least ten people were injured, no word on why they crashed into that building. The faa unveiling an ambitious proposal aimed at drones, regulating commercial and consumer drones. All drones will be tracked in real time with beacons that broadcast their location and identity when they take flight. The proposal is only a draft giving the public 60 days to comment. If approved it would take effect after another three years. The population is growing in california but more people are using the north bay. Napa, marin and sonoma counties have lost more than 3,000 people, making them the only counties to see a population decrease. The south bay the number shows Santa Clara County accounts for 5 of californias population, almost 2 Million People live there.
