At this point we went to bed knowing the kids would likely be learning at home for the rest of the school year, but we woke up not really knowing what that was going to look like. The state superintendent did push out some guidelines. I think we all have a lot of questions not just as parents but educators as well. Shortly after pushing out the guidance the superintendent tweeted saying im hosting a webinar to discuss the details. We have room for 5,000. And after just a few hours we are already near capacity. Clearly a lot of questions out there. He will likely field questions about what Distance Learning will look like. Pointed to some districts that plan to load zoom and webex on to mobile devices, use google classrooms, some districts considering preloading usb drives with content to send home and also partnering with local wifi providers like our Parent Company comcast which already offered up unlimited data and an open wifi network to help lowincome families stay connected to the educational content. Also suggesting partnering with local pbs stations to put content out that way. Now los angeles unified set this up initially working with folks in the bay area and the same programming will be on the air here shortly. It will be standards based content with lesson plans and do at home assignments. Theres some teacher training as well. The state superintendent said theyre working to address Child Care Needs for some people. The two things he promised is that employees would continue to get paid through this difficult time and that meals will still be provided for the students who count on them at their local schools. So we have seen some of those distributions. Those will continue, and we are still pressing the superintendent for what this means. Our local district certainly were waiting to hear from them. Child care is considered an essential service. You dont want to have large groups of kids. Its hard. We did just pass an emergency, 1. 1 billion budget governor flexibility to deploy these resources. A lot of those resources are going to go into the health care system, expanding capacity, nursing homes. We need more support for parents who have to work and care for their kids. Absolutely. Also the big impact on seniors as well as the homeless because they are being hit hard with this virus. What is the work being done to get the word out to them as well as to prevent the spread within the community . I think marginalized and vulnerable communities are at great risk. We know seniors and people with Chronic Health conditions are at greatest risk to have a severe reaction to the virus and have severe symptoms, and so we are its so important that they stay isolated, there are various groups working on making sure they have home delivered meals like meals on wheels. Other groups are mobilizing. Its important for us to check in on not person to person but neighbors, family members, loved ones who are seniors or have health conditions. For the homeless we need to get people inside into a safe and healthy setting. There are more Resources Available for that whether its motels or trailers. Our immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants, people who dont speak great english who are scared of going to through official channels. We need to make sure they have access as well. I think as a mom of triplets, when my kids first heard they werent going back to school, i could sense that fear and anxiety with them and it really helps just to be calm and to answer their questions. What do you advise . Good morning, laura. Its very important tore clear, to be direct. The conversation needs to be open so that they know they can come to you with questions if they have them. Children need to know it is our job to keep them safe and secure and we feel confident and competent in doing so. It is important those who are age appropriate and talking about anxiety and kids manifest this in different ways. Preschoolers may get more clingy or regress in behaviors. School aged kids may complain about stomach aches. Adolescents may be more withdrawn. Its important to Pay Attention to those and to keep them engaged. I would limit as related to the crisis. They dont need to know what measures are being taken in the School District on the east coast, for example. It is important that they continue playing. Playing is a Key Development activity for children. One thing one can do is encourage their creativity by engaging them in appropriate socializing and social distancing games like tag and things like that. Engaging them in works of art. This came up during a press conference yesterday. Talking about a stimulus package that could cost as much as a trillion dollars. Tr then the president came to the microphone and said this. Ive always known this is a real this is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic. All you had to do was look at other countries. Now its almost 120 countries all over the world. No, ive always viewed it as very serious. There was no difference yesterday from days before. Reporter that is, of course, entirely false. The president repeatedly played down the pandemic and i could show you all kinds of soundbites where he talks about it will miraculously go away where he thought the number of coronavirus patients would go to zero. Youve seen that just as often as i have. Its the president s job to tell us the truth about whats happening. Its the medias job to fact check the president and we will continue to do that. Even if the surroundings arent quite as familiar. You can follow me on twitter. Thats familiar. Im scottmcgrew. Thanks, scott. We could see a wintry mix. We can see the sun rising as the light rain starts and it will continue through 10 00 and then a break. It will be chilly with the slow warmup today. As we go hour by hour were still looking at hitormiss showers. Not raining, widespread the whole time. I do think well see this ramp up between 3 00 and 4 00 and some of these showers that do come down may briefly produce rain along with hail and thunderstorms possible today as we see it once again in our hour by hour forecast. By tomorrow were still looking at some rain chances but it will be very slight. Most likely developing during the afternoon. Our rain chances continue for today as well as tomorrow but then look at friday. It is dry and our temperatures are warming up. Saturday just perfect and then a new storm system comes in to bring us more muchneeded rain into the start of next week. Mike the weather is a factor.
