Plus, with scientists now focusing on more than a dozen possible vaccines, we will talk to the man who helped to develop a vaccine for another deadly virus about how soon we might see one now. Later, in our sunday spotlight, the sounds of silence. Scientists show us how Mother Nature has been raising her voice measurably without us noisy humans around. As americans begin to step back outside, sign riises are racing towards the vaccine Public Health officials have said will mark the moment when we are truly safe to get back to our precoronavirus lives. The paul is the director of Vaccine Education Center at the childrens hospital. I want to get back to the vaccine but as someone who has studied Public Health, what do you think when you see images of packed public parks and malls across the south crowded with people tomorrow morning. Its certainly true we need to get back to work. Its a shame we dont have the kind of testing that would inform us how to get back to work in the safest way possible. I think at this point were not going to get the kind of testing we need, so were in the midst of doing a grand national experiment. Im sure well find there were parts of this country that went back to work and shouldnt have gone back to work. Unfortunately, well learn it the hard way. You helped develop the rotovirus vaccination. The Task Force Working faster than they have ever worked towards a vaccine, they hope by january, by some reports. In your opinion, how extraordinarily quick would that be . Its unprecedentedly quick. Typically vaccine programs take 20 years from research to a commercial product. This is being done in 12, 18 months. By definition there are steps that will be skipped or coalesced. The big one is, before a vaccine is licensed by the fda, you this wont be a licensed product. I think it will be fda approved. You have a placebo control trial, i think that wont happen. Well test it in a few thousand people before its rolled out to the public, which has some level of uncertainty. I think in the midst of this virus which is killing 1,000 to 2,000 people every day, i think were willing to accept some level of uncertainty to try to stop this surge. So, is it possible then, doctor, in our understandable rush to a vaccine, we may make a vaccine thats less effective against coronavirus . I think we can make a vaccine thats effective. I think we probably wont know exactly how effective until it rolls out and we look at a larger number of people. I think we can be confident before it rolls out that it doesnt cause a common side effect. It may not be out there that we find out it causes a very uncommon side effect. Again, its a level of uncertainty we have to live with given how much we need a vak sxeen need it now. Im sure well be talking to you much more as we race towards that vaccine. Doctor, thank you for your time. The woman who alleges former Vice President and apparent democratic president ial nominee Joe Biden Joe biden secti joe biden sex youll sexually assaulted her when she was his aide. Reporter its a complex story getting even more so with questions about now if there is documentation she said she filed. Reporter this morning the search for a paper trail. A former biden staffer says she filed a complaint with a Senate Personnel office in 223. That complaint regarding Sexual Harassment she says she experienced while working by biden, not sexual assault. Biden denied the allegation in interviews on msnbc. Im saying unequivocally it never happened, period. I dont know what kind of complaint she made. Reporter reade telling the associated press, quote, i know i was too scared to write about the sexual assault. At issue now, where reades apparent complaint might be. The National Archives telling nbc news the senate controls those files. Biden instructing the senate to find and release them, if they exist. Some calling for biden to open up the trove of documents from his time in the senate, stored at the university of delaware. The University Says those will remain sealed until after biden leaves public life. Meanwhile, former aides to president barack obama coming to bidens defense. Some sailing no allegations were uncovered during the rigorous vetting process biden went through to be chosen for the 2020 ticket. Reporter we have now heard from the former Vice President on this. The question is when well hear next from tara reade on camera. She says she wants to deal with her own security before doing any kind of sitdown interview. Yeah, she had one scheduled for this morning and then canceled it. Ali, thank you very much. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. Good morning, good to see you. We had Vice President joe biden on morning joe and mika did that interview. He was unequivocal in his denial. How is he handling the questions and should he release those university of delaware papers, as many are calling for . Well, look, i think hes you say you should have confronted this a bit sooner. Theres some on that. You could say on the university of delaware papers, he might have begun his baseline with saying they did their own search or they got a thirdparty to do a search, at least on tara reades name. There are some baselines you could say they didnt meet that they could have. At the same time, he did throw out a marker and he said, you know, im calling on the secretary of the senate, if this complaint exists, theyll have it and lets find the complaint. I think at the end of the day, willie, this piece of paper is going to matter on whether this story sort of continues to keep moving or it sort of sits in the access hollywood ether. It becomes an eye of the beholder, part of your understanding of him and the campaign in general, sort of what happened with President Trump. But if there is a piece of paper that is found, whatever is said on it, that it exists, i think, would amp this up another level for the former Vice President. This, of course, chuck comes in the middle of a president ial campaign where President Trump is seeing his poll numbers slip in some battleground states. There was a lot of reporting that last week he had a call with his Campaign Team where he erupted when he saw their internal polling showing him not doing well. He stepped back this week from those public briefings he had been holding every day. Is that some level of recognition, perhaps, that the briefings are not helping him as he seeks reelection . It certainly is some sort of, hes accepting that that is the solution his aides have decided to try, which means hes accepting the idea hes behind in the polls. The fact is, if you look, i havent seen a public poll in a battleground state or even borderline battleground state that hasnt showed the president declining and biden either ahead or gaining. So, he certainly is at least acknowledged it this week, but this week, willie. One week. Yeah. Six months from this morning, by the way, election day. Chuck, thanks so much as always. We will look for much more on meet the press when the topic is whether america is good sunday morning. We are getting good clearing from the cloud cover. Were seeing clear skies over san francisco. Youll remember last week we told you about captain too many moore, the british world war ii veteran, who began a humble effort to raise 1,000 pounds, about 1,200, for great britains halfcourt workers by walking 100 laps around his garden in honor of his 100th birthday. As of this morning has raised more than 41 million for the National Health service and earned a Guinness World record, probably just for being awesome. On thursday, captain tom officially turned 100 years old and the uk celebrated him with cakes, signs and murals painted across britain and he received more than 150,000 birthday cards from around the world, all set up in an impressive display at his grandsons school. Captain tom even received a card from Queen Elizabeth herself. Captain tom also received an honorary military promotion to colonel in recognition of his extraordinary fundraising efforts. He was honored with a flyover from the Royal Air Force on the morning of his birthday. Now that, my friends, is a party. Happy birthday, captain tom. Our next high goes to a big man doing big things from the trenches of the nfl to the fight against the coronavirus. Laurent duvernaytardif is 65, 325pound starting guard for the kansas chiefs. On february 2nd he and the chiefs won the teams first super bowl title in 50 years. In addition to being excellent in pass protection, laurent also happens to be the First Medical School graduate to ever play in the nfl. In 2018 he earned his doctor degree. While he heard about the coronavirus on vacation after the super bowl, the big fella knew he had to get home to help. He was placed into service in a longterm care facility about an hour from his hometown of montreal. Hes working in a nursing role since he has not finished his residency. Of course there are risks but you have to look at, standpoint young, fit individual working atrisk environment with the best protective gear possible, i think is the best way to fight this thing. Thats why i want to contribute. Laurent says the chiefs have been proud to support his efforts to put on the scrubs and to pitch in back home. Thats a big guy with a big future after football. Way to go, big man. Our final high this week goes to a moment many of us can relate to these days as were doing our best to work from home. Sometimes that means kids screaming in the background of a zoom meeting or your dog hopping on your lap when youre doing the weather on live television. The maps arent going to move because he just whacked the computer with his head. Let me just verbalize the forecast, okay . That wasnt very smart. Saturday, partly cloudy, turning more humid with temperatures, again, in the mid80s. Didnt mean to keep you up. Next time, imprud, were going to eat after this. Thats the forecast. That is chief meteorologist at fox 13 tampa bay in florida when his very good dog brody, who became an internet hero with this clip viral. Brody just wanted a snack. And looking out the cameraman craig just outside. You are a very good boy. Coming up next, a sunday sitdown with Shaquille Oneal on his hall of fame career, his role as tvs favorite commercial pitchman, and my misguided attempt to guard the most dominant player in the history of basketball. And then new yorks famed metropolitan museum of heaart h been closed for nearly two months. Here is a live look outside. Beautiful as we look towards sfo at 6 26. Wow. This looks beautiful out there. Im kira klapper. I needed a moment looking at the pink skies over there. Were going to check in with vianey arana with a look at our micro climate forecast. Hey, vianey. That was a stunning shot, kira. I looked up at the same view using my television. Thats really nice. The temperatures right now cool up to the north bay in the 40s but its in the 50s down to the south bay. 52 in san jose. I want to show you, though, a look ahead at what we can expect into the afternoon. We do have a cold front passing through that will keep our temperatures similar to yesterday in the 70s. A normal high is around 71 degrees. So pretty normal for this time of year. But we have a big warmup on the way nearing those 90s, maybe even hitting the 90degree mark. I will definitely have a closer look at that. Coming up, of course, at 7 00 a. M. Kira. Thanks, vianey, so much. A critical day now on the coast. A lot could be riding on what happens at the beaches today as the state considers when to reopen more businesses. But to stop people from crowding the sands some new rules are taking effect and taking some by surprise. State leaders are closely watching the situation as they weigh whether california is ready for fewer restrictions. Beginning tomorrow people who live within ten miles will be able to visit San Mateo County beaches. No beach blankets, chairs, coolers or other lounging items will be allowed. Police drove around yesterday explaining the new rules to beachgoers. You will be allowed to be at the beach if youre moving. If you are watching the kids on the water. In santa cruz new restrictions already are in effect. Each beach is off limits from 11 00 a. M. To 5 00 p. M. Just like in pacifica where people can surf but they cant sit on the beach. Cars that are illegally parked are being cited. The aim is to encourage exercise and discourage groups. Now to antiyok where the city leader who suggested on social media sick, old, and Homeless People dont need to be protected from covid 19 has been ousted. But its natures course. Its not a good thing. Its not a bad thing. Its a real thing. Antioch councilmembers voted unanimously to remove ken turnage from his post as chairman of the citys planning commission. Turnage caused the uproar when he started sharing his controversial views on social media. He has since deleted the posts but refuses to back down from his stance the virus would, quote, fix drains on society, end quote. Coming up, spending quarantine at the happiest place on earth. Well tell you how long they managed to quarantine. Back to sunday today. You said yourself that everything negative, pressure, challenges is all opportunities for me to rise. We now take that sage advice and rise from anguish and begin with the healing. Just know we got your back, little brother. Ill look after things down here. Ill be sure to teach them all your moves and i promise i will not teach them my free throw techniques. That is Shaquille Oneal, not known for his free throw shooting, speaking at the Memorial Service for his friend and teammate, kobe bryant, who died in a Helicopter Crash in february. Shaq and kobe made up one of the greatest duos in the history of sports, playing together on the Los Angeles Lakers they won three consecutive nba titles. The first of which came 20 years ago next month. A big, strong, agill 71, shaq has been the most dominant player on every court his size 22 feet have stepped on. Hes always been magnetic off the court. We got together near his hoerm in rural georgia for a sunday sitdown. When we stopped by a local basketball court, we found a group of boys playing pickup at lunchtime. Imagine their surprise when Shaquille Oneal stepped out of his truck. Whoa. All right. Lets play a game. You know who willie is . Post up, big dog. Hall of famer Shaquille Oneal is one of the most dominant athletes in the history of sports. Now nine years since he played his last nba game, the big man is proving to be an unstoppable businessman, too. When i was 19 years old i met Magic Johnson in los angeles. Magic pulled me to the side and says, youre going to be a big star in this league but at some point you want to start owning things. Today shaq owns a lot of things. Restaurants, real estate and car washes and hes become one of tvs favorite pitchmen. How about some help up here . Nope. Im retired. Some people watch those and go, i love shaq in those ads, but i know he doesnt need the money, so whats he doing in all those ads . Its about partnership. Im in college, i go to a ford dealership and guy says, you have insurance . Whats insurance . So, i go to all the big boys, 200, 300 a month, i aint got that. I go to little place, this general insurance, 29 a month. I got that. So, now when im at a conference one day and i see the general, i see the ceo, i said, you know i had general insurance when i was in college. We need to sell the business. Shaq had been told in college that big guys and basketball just didnt get endorsement deals the way michael and magic did. Like to be like mike so, im sitting there and im watching and, ill never have a commercial ever. And this dumb dog comes on the tv, spuds mckenzie. Pu remember him . Of course. He was everywhere, right . But his commercials were always funny, they were always cute. This dudes got cups, hats, napkins. Then i said to myself, if i ever get a commercial, i got to shaq it up. I got to make people laugh. And shaq has a simple rule. He only endorses products he actually uses. Win the first championship you get contacted by wheaties, hey, we want to put shaq on the cover. I told my guys i cant do it. Big argument, what do you mean you cant do it . Growing up where i grew up, we couldnt afford wheaties. I dont know what wheaties tastes like. Call fruity pebbles. Shaquille grew up in newark, new jersey, and grew up on army bases with his mom and stepfather, a career Army Reservists and discipline. When she talked, its gold. She would say, what did you do to make somebody smile . She taught you humility. Yeah. In this world we live in its about treating people with honor and respect. What have i done to put a smile on your face . Shaq has been the center of attention for most of his life and a larger than Life National star since the moment he stepped onto the campus of Louisiana State university in 1989. The Orlando Magic selects a Shaquille Oneal. Shaq was the first allover pack in the draft and Main Attraction at arenas all around the league. Oneill quickly earned multimillion dollar endorsement contracts with pepsi and reebok. But im ready. And began to take business almost as seriously as basketball. So, its all about teammates. For example, your shows fabulous, right . But youre not doing it by yourself. Youve got a hell of a producer, shes the point guard, you got a shooting guard, a sound guy whos a point forward and we win as a team. Education isnt about read a book, take a test, pass a test, youre educated. Its about meeting people. One day im in the four seasons and i hear these gentlemen, oh, i just did this, 70 million this, 50 million this. I grabbed the gentleman and said, how do i save money . He pulls out 100. This is 100. Now, half of 100 is what, willie . 50. Save it. Save it. How much do we have left . Another 50. If you say so. The real people that are very wealthy do this. How much is this, will . 25. All right. You put that away also. Put it away so youve got 75 saved. Now, this, do whatever you want. Houses, cars, jewelry. I did that. Shaq ventured into entertainment, too. Give a dog a bone his 1993 rap movie blue chips request the then starring in the cult favorite kazamm. Which was the worst best movie. Was there any risk doing it that early in your nba career that stuff . No. We have to take advantage of all opportunities. Clearly those opportunities did not distract oneill from his work on the court. He won four nba championships and went to 15 allstar games. Now he brings all of that experience to his job on tnts show inside the nba where he talks hoops with former fellow stars Charles Barkley and kenny smith. If you had to do your alltime nba starting five, do you have one . Kobe and mike, thats the one and two. Three i have to go with bird. Four i got to go with malone. Five i got to go with akeem. You left somebody out. No. Youre not first team . No, im not first team. Not at all. Okay. Can i give you my five . Magic, michael, lebron, shaq at the five, and then hear me out on power forward, i slide bill russell into the four. I cant be mad at that. Back on the playground, i wasnt exactly michael or lebron, but i did have my moments. Oh, nice form. Ooh shaq, though, proved to be a tough matchup. No way i lose to an anchorman. No way im losing to an anchorman, he said, and he did not. Im still sore after that matchup. Hes truly one of the alltime great guys. Our big thanks, again, to p. J. s cafe in georgia for hosting our conversation and for all those young fellows for letting us jump in their game. In one of the great stains on the history of our country, president Franklin Roosevelt issued an order in february of 1942 that eventually placed more than 100,000 americans of japanese descent into internment tadashi was one of them. Born in los ans, tadashi grew up the son of a minister and school teacher. He was living in a small farm town outside fresno when on his 12th birthday he and his family were ordered to the relocation camp in arizona, where they spent two long years. After being released, the family moved to new jersey to start a new life. Tadashi later joined the United States army to fight for the very country that had imprisoned his family. He served in the korean war from 1951 to 1953. After the war, tadashi, tad to his friends, earned a College Degree in chemical engineering. He moved to new york city to live with and met mabel, the woman who would become his wife. In 1976 he was named principal of Public School 41 in manhattan, where he was the longtime beloved leader of his teachers and students. He later was named a school superintendent. In 1981, tadashi gave testimony about his familys experience during world war ii to the Congressional Commission on wartime relocation and internment of civilians.
