Similar change across the state in 2023. Tens of millions of people have lost their jobs over the past eight weeks. Many are wondering how long this trend will continue and if the situation is Getting Better or worse. Putting this perspective is heidi schuerholz from the Economic Policy institute. Heidi, thank you for joining us this morning. Thanks for having me. So many people are faced with unemployment. Many in fear they may be losing their jobs. What should a person do if theyre faced with that dilemma . If people are losing their jobs theyve been furloughed from their jobs, the most important thing they can do right now is apply for Unemployment Insurance benefits. Think of it as their patriotic duty to get those benefits. Obviously it helps make ends meet in the meantime but the other thing it helps the macro economy. The peoples spending drops as a result of losing their jobs, getting furloughs. That hurts the whole economy and makes everyone more soft. Make sure you get in there and get your unemployment benefits. Talking about spending that brings into factor a phrase we hear a lot. What creates a Great Depression and are we there . Were not there yet. Right now what were facing is Something Likely as deep as the Great Depression but then how long will it last . And that is a big unknown. I think we can think of that as really up to policymakers, which sounds a little odd. About twothirds of people out of work because of the virus report that they expect to be called back to their job. That prior job is only going to be there if policymakers do the things to make sure theres enough confidence and demand the economy is there. Policymakers need to get enough aid to people so they have income even if theyre not working so businesses stay afloat. State and local governments dont have to make savage cuts in the face of their decline in revenue. I think those unemployed workers who connectly expect to be called back to their jobs will be called back. And thats what were all hoping for. A good and quick bounceback. Heidi, thank you so much for sharing your perspective this morning. Thanks for having me. Laura . One of californias most Popular National parks is slowly starting to open. Then as we go into the rest of forecast our temperatures warming up so enjoy this. Were looking at some seasonable weather and then it turns into summer. Mike is giving us a look at this morning commute. The impression things are the same but the patterns and slowing is not 100 the case. Lets look at the map where we do see slowing where the arrows are. Out of the altamont and through pleasanton weve seen that for two weeks solid now. A little more and longer lasting slowdown there. We do have a crash independent of anything going on. Its on the shoulder. A live look shows you how things are shaping up as far as the volume of traffic goes, easy through palo alto.
