Some 300 demonstrators marched through the streets demanding meaningful change for all black americans after the death of george floyd. Tonight protests are smaller and peaceful. Nbc bay areas Terry Mcsweeney is live near Police Headquarters where several dozen people did test that citys new curfew, terry. Reporter yeah, they certainly did. For starters i want to say im not wearing my mask right now because im not within ten feet of an difference a night makes. Last night two blocks from here i was talking about the 40 people that had just been arrested in oakland. Tonight, no arrests, no citations, not to take anything away from the demonstration. It was loud and emotional. No justice, no peace reporter the chanting was strong tonight. Dont shoot reporter signs were everywhere of unity and rage. To the steps of city hall they went for speeches. We want a better life for ourselves, for our children, for our future. It can be done. It might not happen today, but weve got to come back every day. Reporter one of the organizers, caleb, told us what it is hed like to see come out of these protests. First we would need to get rid of all these police who are here right now because clearly theyve been doing wrong all this time. So either get rid of them, or you guys can keep paying them but we aint going to pay them. We can police our own communities. Reporter perhaps 50 of the protesters blocked the intersection one block from Police Headquarters. Outnumbered by officers by at least three to one. I asked oakland p. D. Spokesperson john na watson what was the difference between last night when there were arrests for curfew violations and tonight when they let the demonstrators out here about 9 30, quarter to 10 00 and there were no citations. She said last night she didnt have any resources to spare. Things are much calmer in oakland. They let the people play it out, and they left peacefully. Reporter well, i was videotaping an arrest from inside our marked van. A couple people were being arrested, taken out of a van and arrested. I was rolling on it with my phone. An officer told me that i had to drive away, gop to the corner, and i said, i be here, dont i . And he , okay, get out of the van. I was handcuffed and walked up to the street maybe half a block, and i stayed there for maybe 10, 12 minutes. They took the handcuffs off. Five minutes after that, an officer came back and said i was doing to try and protect your safety. I kiend of pointed out to the press sometimes allow ourselves in bad situations because its our job. There was no raised voices and no physical roughness. He allowed me to go, and on my way i went. This will be discussed tomorrow between oakland p. D. And the management at nbc bay area. At least it was a peaceful resolution at that point. Thank you, terry. Reporter it was. In the south bay, a curfew is not stopping people from gathering there. Hundreds marched in the streets of san jose near city hall. No word tonight on any arrests there. A more the peninsula tonight when hundreds came out toeard witnesf solidarity with an unexpected ally, a Police Officer who took a knee in front of protesters. Nbc bay areas jean elle shows us the gesture of unity in redwood city that had protesters cheering. Reporter businesses here in redwood city boarded up before tonights protest, and some people created art and political messages on those boards while others hit the streets. We came together as a community to say no more reporter no more Police Violence against people of color. Hundreds of people gathered at Courthouse Square in redwood city demanding justice for george floyd. Black lives matter and its just a right thing to do to be here. Reporter katya says shes standing up for communities who must be heard. Its something that does get me to my core because its not fair when people have to experience this when i never have. I mean look at me. Im a lighter complexion. Ive never have to endure anything like that. Its just right to be here. Reporter protesters marched to highway 101 where police lines blocked them at thedonte a knee for george floyd before leaving. Most businesses covered their windows with plywood concerned about looting. I get it being a black man in america, and im angry, right . But im not going to go and destroy something to get my point across. Reporter charles ming says he is angry but doesnt support violence. Hes hoping protests will lead to the change america needs. Its important because its been going on too long. Reporter one protest sign tonight said george floyd was peaceful and so are real protesters. After curfew, a small group refusing to disperse near a freeway onramp erupted in cheers. A newspaper photographer captured the moment. An officer took a knee and hugged a protester. Satisfied, the group left. Jean elle, nbc bay area news. In fremont, it was the silence that spoke. Demonstrators knelt on a knee for five minutes in solidarity with floyd who died after being kneed by a Police Officer for nearly that amount of time. The crowd marched to city hall and then to the police stat a td marchers made their way down the great highway spreading across the bike path, marching along ocean beach. And in marin, a large crowd marched to st. Andrew Presbyterian Church in sausalito where they sat on the lawn and listened to speakers. Warnings of violence and looting, hundreds of officers assembled at a church downtown. High School Students canceled the patriot they had planned for downtown. None those threats materialized. The state of minnesota has filed civil rights charges against the Minneapolis Police department over the death of george floyd. The governor making that announcement today. That investigation will review the departments policies, its procedures, its practices over the last ten years to see if discriminatory actions were taken against people of color. Being black should not be a death sentence, and for each and every one of us in law enforcement, you dont get judged right on the spot, especially with the finality of being killed in police custody. This is the first time the state has launched a civil rights investigation into the Minneapolis Police department. Floyds family announced his Funeral Plans today. There will be three memorials in three different cities. The first is this thursday in minneapolis where he died in police custody. A public viewing and memorial is scheduled for saturday in North Carolina where floyds sister lives. And the last of the planned memorials will be on monday in floyds hometown of houston, where the public is invited to a viewing at the fountain of praise church. Lets change directions here. A microclimate weather alert. Dangerous heat is headed back to us. This is a live look over walnut creek where tripledigit temperatures are possible as soon as tomorrow. Indoor shopping can resume. Office spaces can reopen which means people can go back to work. Also opening up, outdoor museums and child care services. Also things like house keeping, car washes, pet grooming. So we went downtown tonight to talk to Business Owners about that reopening, but most storefronts were boarded up in advance of the protest. We did talk to one neighbor who said he has some reservations about this. I think its good. I know businesses got to restart sometime, but, you know, im still worried. Honestly, were still in pandemic. Weve barely gotten through the phases and i dont want us to try to go for money and get people sick. The Health Leaders say the county has made significant headway in meeting those indicators needed to reopen. A change also coming to the south bay. If you live in santa clara county, starting friday Outdoor Dining will be allowed. Indoor shopping can resume as well as summer camp and child care. The county says theyll also allow outdoor religious services. Santa clara county is in good shape. Thats the message tonight from its top health officer, dr. Sara cody. Hospitals she says are not ov overcrowded. People are getting tested and outbreaks in nursing facilities are getting contained. She told county leaders today the best news comes from areas where transmission rates were at one point the highest. We have done significant testing and outreach in these communities and seen that the positive iterate ityistiity rat she said its vital to continue social distancing and keep that mask on. Heres a look at the cases in the bay area. Alameda county added 44 since yesterday. Contra costa, 38. Santa clara only added 14. So up next, what went wrong . That helicopter working for pg e when it hit power lines and crashed around 1 30. The crash started a fire. Pg e had to shut off power to nearly 40,000 people to protect the firefighters while they put out the flames. Power eventually was restored around 8 30. One of californias highest profile murder cases moved back into a courtroom today. In a virtual hearing before the state supreme court, attorneys for Scott Peterson argued for a new trial. Peterson, as you may remember, was convicted and sentenced to death for killing his wife laci and their unborn child in 2004. Petersons legal team says the original attorney failed to present witnesses that could haveholaci was allegedly alive at the time he allegedly killed. Two San FranciscoJewelry Stores are boarded up tonight, victims of vandalism and theft. Gallery of jewels posted these pictures online. Owners say it was broken into, looted on saturday night. You can see a sign on the plywood which reads, nothing left to steal. Theyre hoping Community Donations will help them rebuild. Campos jewelry on Mission Street suffered the same fate. Customers upset wrote online that the owner, nick, is known for helping the community, and he shouldnt have been hurt that way. It is a common sight in cities across the bay area right now. Volunteers putting on those gloves and heading out to clean up after a night of vandalism. This is what it looked like in san jose today when people came together to scrub the graffiti off downtown buildings. City councilmember was there and said anyone is welcome to join them if another day of cleanup is necessary. There are new calls for justice and equality in downtown san jose tonight. Freddy blue. Joseph mann. 500 people gathered at city hall for a rally hosted by the naacp. Religious leaders and representatives from Silicon Valley and naacp spoke. Many of the speakers angry at what they call unfair tactics by police. Theyre asking for sweeping reforms and called on allies of all races. White people, when they kill us, they think they are making it safe for you. When they beat us and suppress us, theyre doing it on your behalf. The naacp says they are sending a letter to Governor Newsom to explore issues plaguing the africanamerican community. With so much going on, we wanted to get some perspective. Many fear the message of the protests is getting lost with the looting. Nbc bay areas ian cull spoke with a dr. Martin luther king historian from stanford. Reporter many are hoping the protests across the country lead to change, and longtime professor and activist dr. Claiborne carson says it needs to happen in society and policing. Even those suspected of violating laws deserve humane treatment, the kind of treatment you would give if george floyd had been a businessman in a suit. Reporter hes the director of the Martin Luther king jr. Institute at stanford. He was chosen by Coretta Scott king to publish her husbands speeches and writings. Overall im very encouraged that people are responding in a massive way. Reporter dr. Carson gave his perspective from a historical sense and a personal one. 1965 watts riots with a group of peaceful protesters. He says police beat him when he tried to help someone who was hurt. In all, 34 people were killed. Everything was the word of the police versus the word of the person who was on the ground. And every one of those 34 deaths was ruled a justifiable homicide even if people were shot in the back who were unarmed. Reporter he says now cell phone cameras have helped shine a light on injustices. Im thankful that this has raised the consciousness, but i think its sad that all those reports that were ignored over all those years. Reporter he believes dr. King would be encouraged by the diversity in these protests. But i think he would express a certain amount of pride in the nation that we have come to the point where thousands and thousands of people of all races recognize that this is wrong and it has to stop. Reporter in the south bay, ian cull, nbc bay area news. Were following some breaking news in san jose. Police just confirming they are investigating an officerinvolved shooting. We dont know a lot of details at this point, but this is what we do know. The location is north ave and east Mission Streets. Location is not anywhere near where the protests were happening so we dont know if theyre connected. Not likely. Police say theyll get more information when they have it. Again, an officerinvolved shooting in that area. There is a new push today to keep officers with a history of Excessive Force out of the San FranciscoPolice Department and the sheriffs office. San francisco District Attorney chesa boudin introduced a resolution urging San FranciscoCivil Service commission to stop hiring officers who have a history of police misconduct. Our priority is not to find out about peoples dirty laundry but to simply make sure pme to he said there are currently officers within the department who should not be there based on their past. The ultimate goal is to make the public feel confident they are interacting with officers interested in Public Safety and not power. You may have seen it online, hashtag blackout tuesday. The scroll of black boxes on instagram reflecting the National Mood over George Floyds death. It started in the Music Industry and took off overnight. People who posted the empty boxes noted it was a way to stand up against racism and stand for inclusion. Spotify, apple music, and itunes featured playlists devoted to black lives matter. And sirius xm silenced its music channels for three minutes in tribute to victims of racism. Lets switch gears again, check in once again with jeff ranieri. Were talking about potentially dangerous temperatures coming toward us. Certainly so. As we move through tomorrow, really from the hours of 1 00 p. M. Through about 8 00 tomorrow night, thats going to be the zone of some of the hottest temperatures where we will have some low 100s. You can really see this point driven home to you at least right now when you see how warm it is still at 11 19 tonight. We currently have 77 degrees in concord. Its really hard to cool off with this big bubble of heat thats building over california right now. So very, very mild. In fact, that 77 is close to where we should be for the daytime high. So eventually overnight well get some 60s in here, but, look, were going to be warming up really fast tomorrow morning. When a lot of you are up and going trying to get outside, maybe youre heading back to work, dog for a walk or youre doing anything outside with the kids, youre already in the 70s here for the trivalley, peninsula, and the south bay and mostly sunny skies. 71. Temperatures tomorrow going 2 to 6 degrees warmer the way i see it right now and that will be good enough in the south bay to put us into some 100s. Take note. The warmest locations would be morgan hill and gilroy, hitting 100. Downtown san jose even 96. East san jose 98. East bay we have the hottest widespread zone where it will be most critical for you to take some breaks from that heat if youre outside for an extended period of time. 100 in walnut creek. 100 in livermore. Peninsula, not quite at 100. Palo alto, 92. San francisco, some low 80s in the mission. The marina, 68. The embarcadero at 76. So wherever were getting that ocean breeze it will be cooler. Where that ocean breeze is not able to move in, well have those 80s right around the mission. And the north bay, 99 in napa. 100 in ukiah. 98 novato. It seems like common sense, make sure to drink plenty of water. Take frequent breaks. Cool towel on the back of your neck really helps. You can put it in the freezer and then stick it on your neck. Tonight President Trump tweeted, quote, we are now forced to seek another state to host the 2020 convention. It is scheduled to take place in late august in charlotte. Public Health Concerns are in direct conflict with the president s wishes for a fullscale convention. The governors of both florida and tennessee have expressed interest in hosting that convention, though. And as the race for the white house quietly moves along, Presumptive Democratic nominee joe biden racked up another string of primary victories. Police say theyre still working it and theyll give us more information in the morning. An update from oakland. Minutes ago the city confirmed two demonstrations in oakland ended peacefully. Police chief says their department chose not to enact the curfew order because the demonstrators were exercising their First Amendment rights and they were doing it in a peaceful manner. The chief says the curfew is, quote, a flexible tool that will be applied with discretion when dealing with crowds that create Public Safety threats. So its up to them whether they want to enforce i gathered tonight, both peaceful. No arrests, no citations, no reports of any violence or looting. Hundreds did gather at the vallejo waterfront today. They carried signs, chanted. They spoke, and they say what they really need and what they really want is change and nothing less. Im tired of seeing people die for no reason. Change needs to happen today today, immediately. Nobody else needs to die by people who abuse their power later in the evening, reportedly turned into a standoff with police. The chronicle is reporting that officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd gathered around the station. Its been a tense 24 hours in vallejo.
