Its great to see all these people out here on the street. Reporter from north beach to mission bay were happy to see our friends in the neighborhood back at mission rock. Reporter Restaurant Owners say its a relief to be able to serve customers outside. Patios are full of people hungry for the familiar experience of eating out. We actually had reservations for monday, but since they opened today, it was like, oh, no. Were going today. To be honest with you, weve been waiting for this for quite some time, and were all safe right now because were all distanced. Reporter restaurants without a patio have tables on the sidewalk and in parking spots. Some put plexiglas up to make customers feel safe. Many also invested in heaters. In San Francisco, youre going to want to bring layers to dinner, and tonight people came prepared. Thats why you have jackets. Are you kidding . And now they have the heaters. Reporter ruben says hes happy to bundle up and support local restaurants. The way i see it, when we put money into the main businesses, were paying for another persons salary, and especially the workers, the chefs, the waiters and the bartenders. Those people have families too. Reporter while it looks busy outside, Restaurant Owners say they need to be able to get people seated inside to get back to precovid19 income and staffing. But tonight is a good first step in the right direction. Were slowly getting people back. Were probably up to maybe six, which is not quite where we want to be. But i like to see everybody here because if everybodys here, well be having a good time. Reporter jean elle, nbc bay area news. California is easing more restrictions. Governor newsom says nail salons, tattoo shops, and massage parlors can reopen next friday. But that probably wont happen in most of the bay area because our Health Officers tend to be more conservative. Now, when they do reopen here, they will be required to follow detailed safety guidelines. Workers and customers must wear face masks and adopt more intense cleaning practices. Now, as more businesses reopen, covid19 cases appear to be going back up. Alameda county remains the hot spot, adding 97 cases today. Sa cases. Contra costa county added 48. San mateo county added 39. San francisco county was close behind with 37. In total, the bay area has had nearly 17,000 covid19 cases and close to 500 deaths. Workers testing positive at several construction sites in Santa Clara County. Now the county is urging the Construction Industry to adhere to Public Health guidelines. The largest outbreak is at a site in mountain view. There are ten confirmed cases there with 30 potential exposures. The company notified the Public Health department as soon as they learns of the first case and closed that site. Also two locations in san jose and one in milpitas. They each have between three and five cases. Solano county has been leading the pack when it comes to reopenings. Today marked another milestone as bars and gyms were given the green light. Things arent quite the same as they used to be. In between drinks, customers must wear a mask. Distancing and sanitation guidelines are in place at gyms. Solano county also seeing a rise in covid19 cases. Its seen a 13 jump in the infection rate in the past week. Mixed feelings. Everythings scary because im borderline on that old guy can get it real easy. Because of my age and i have a lot of conditions that you have to worry about it. But the Solano CountyHealth Department says the rise in cases is not tied to reopenings. The new cases have been traced to larger family gatherings, commuting, and working conditions. Alameda county is making changes as well. Late today the countys Health Officer announced it will lift restrictions on certain businesses. Heres what will be allowed starting next friday. Outdoor dining at restaurants, indoor retail, and religious services. There are rules and limitations, though, including reduced capacity and physical distancing in stores and for patio dining. Now to the movement to end racism and police brutality. Every day the protests continue. People expressing their frustrations in different ways. And that includes defacing stat here in San Francisco. Nbc bay areas cheryl hurd has more. Reporter coit tower is a major symbol in San Francisco. Right below that symbol is a statue of christopher columbus. I dont think that he should have ever been celebrated as a person. Reporter the statue tonight defaced. His face and hands painted red. He brought diseases, pestilence. He enslaved people, and it was overall a bad person that shouldnt have a statue to begin with. Reporter across the country, cities and towns are voting to remove statues that are considered symbols of slavery and racial violence. Houstons columbus statue vandalized. Clu and in england, a statue of a 17th century slave trader toppled by antiracism protesters. Some believe these symbols are a slap in the face of africanamericans, who now find themselves fighting for justice. The vandalized statue in the city brings up a lot of emotions. I dont think theres much value in going back and trying to judge somebody from 500 years ago. I think we should focus on the people today. Some of us cant put ourselves in that position and understand. But lets spend our time trying to come together instead of, you know, making one more place in the world even uglier. Reporter in San Francisco, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. Also this evening in San Francisco, a rally on the steps of city hall. It was led by young members of the naacp vowing never to forget george floyd, who died after a Police Officer put a knee to his neck for nearly nine minutes. Demonstrators took a knee for others killed by police. With this rally, with this protest, like i think this is a chance for more youth to come and feel more comfortable speaking out against racism and against the injustices of like our within our communities. The Warriors Organization along with the africanamerican San FranciscoPolice Association supporting todays rally. Police officers in particular letting the crowd know that they are outraged over what happened to floyd and that they support major change within the citys police department. The president s large june 19th rally in tulsa, oklahoma, has been rescheduled. Mr. Trump wrote today the change was made after many of his africanamerican friends and supporters reached out. June 19th or juneteenth is a celebration of the end of slavery. The president tweeted late tonight that his campaign is moving the make America Great again rally to the 20th. Tonight a march in the south bay, not to city hall, not to the police department, but straight to the mayors house. Protesters spent hours sitting outside san jose mayor sam liccardos home to demand the defunding of the local police department. Nbc bay areas Sergio Quintana has more from city hall, where the protesters ended up. Reporter the aim of mayor sam liccardo is to acknowledge some of the people that san jose Police Officers have shot over the last few years and to defund the San Jose Police department. But the mayor doesnt seem to be going for that second demand. Demonstrators marched to San Jose City hall and arrived just before sundown. They had spent hours outside mayor sam liccardos home. We are going to be bringing some memorials over there to remind him of the injustice in this city from our police department. Reporter the memorials, several white crosses, each with a name and a photo and family members to tell their story. Some have been waiting to explain the pain theyve endured for years. To all the Beautiful People here who are supporting our families that weve been waiting for so long for you guys to support us. Reporter the death of george floyd in minneapolis has unleashed a torrent of grief from people who had loved ones killed by Police Across the country. We need change. Reporter many here wished shows of solidarity from city leaders would have happened sooner. Sam liccardo took a knee for someone else in a different state, which we respect, and we are in unity with black lives matter. But we have our own George Floyds in our own city. The mayor spent most of the day at city hall addressing why he disagrees with efforts to defund the police. He says the sjpd is already one of the most thinly staffed bigcity departments in the country. We dont believe that police are that the entity that should be responding to every social problem. Reporter he said the police no longer respond to discipline calls from schools, and they hope to partner more with Mental Health services for Mental Health calls. New at 11 00, protesters hit the streets in seattle for a statewide day of action. Seattle police came under scrutiny after they used flashbang devices and tear gas to move a large group of protesters last weekend. A federal judge today ordered seattle to temporarily stop using tear gas and pepper spray to break up peaceful protests. A memorial in San Francisco in honor of those killed in the pulse nightclub shooting in orlando. This event is to serve their memory every year, year after year. Today is the fourth anniversary of that shooting massacre. Dozens gathered at the Jane Warner Plaza in the castro to remember those who died. 49 people were killed when a gunman opened fire on the crowd. 50 others were hurt. At the time it was the deadliest mass shooting in u. S. History. After more than two decades of starts and stops, b. A. R. T. Is about to officially roll through san jose and silicon valley. A Ribbon Cutting opened the berryessa station and the milpitas station this morning. A celebratory train trip was taken between stations. This all took place although b. A. R. T. Has lost 90 of its riders during this pandemic. What this project is going to do for Santa Clara County and the region is to provide that connectivity that we so need as were coming out of a recession. The stations officially open to the public tomorrow morning. There are also plans for two more stations, one in downtown san jose and another in santa clara, but both are still years away. The department of health and Human Services says it will now be enforcing sex discrimination protections according to the plain meaning of the word sex as male or female and as determined by biology. Changes are being applauded by many of the president s conservative religious base. Critics say its a big step back for those seeking sex reassignment treatment or even transgender people who need care for common illnesses. Mark zuckerberg is responding to scrutiny over facebooks management of president trumps account. At issue, last months tweet in which the president called minneapolis protesters thugs, adding when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Twitter flagged it for violence, but facebook declined to act. Hundreds of scientists backed by the nonprofit Chan Zuckerberg initiative expressed concern about facebook allowing the spread of misinformation. In an email, Priscilla Chan and zuckerberg wrote they are shakin and disgusted by the president s words but did not promise action. The man accused of ambushing and killing a Santa Cruz County sheriffs deputy made his first court appearance. Steven carrillo appeared virtually in a courtroom from his cell in the Monterey County jail. He faces 19 charges including firstdegree murder for the death of deputy damon gutzwiller. Carrillo did not make a plea. His attorney asked for more time to prepare but added that his client has expressed sorrow. I dont want this to be misunderstood as saying that he has expressed responsibility for any of that, and im not going to say that he hasnt. The District Attorney declined to comment on reports that carrillo could be connected to the deadly shooting of a federal officer in oakland last month. They also refuse to discuss reports that he may have ties to a domestic terror group. Carrillo is expected to return to court july 17th. Four santa clara Police Officers acted lawfully when they shot and killed a man during a gas station robbery last year. That is the finding of an investigation by the Santa Clara CountyDistrict Attorneys office. The chain of events started january 5th, 2019, when sean kennedy threatened employees and customers at rotten robbie gas station. Kennedy repeatedly fired his weapon, striking cars, walls, and gas pumps. Officers returned fire, killing him. The d. A. Investigation found that their actions, quote, undoubtedly saved lives. A protest in alameda today had people dancing in the streets, but this was not a celebration. Protesters were dancing in support of a black man who was handcuffed and detained by police after responding to reports of a man dancing in an empty street. Well, he was exercising. But police cuffed and detained him anyway as neighbors shouted at them to let him go. Mali watkins says hes overwhelmed by all the support, and its time to give back. Where theyre giving support, i feel that i have to give more support because in honesty, im fine, physically, mentally, spiritually. Things that need to be taken care of business wise will be taken care of, but now the healing portion. The alameda city manager says an independent investigation will look into the officers actions. Several civil Rights Groups are calling for the six officers involved to be immediately suspended. They also want those officers names and records released to the public. With many of us eager to resume normal lives, the cdc is issuing new guidelines on how to prevent the spread of covid19. Host friends outdoors if you can. Separate seating and avoid sharing condiments and salad dressings. At hotels, take the stairs. Avoid elevators unless its just you and your family. If youre eating out, call first to make sure the servers are wearing masks. In the coming weeks, we could see increases in the number of cases of covid19 as States Reopen and as there is an increase in public gatherings. The guidelines are in addition to washing hands, practicing social distancing and of course wearing masks. Businesses in napa valley are also ready to welcome back customers. The visit Napa Valley Association has launched a campaign to encourage locals to be the first to fill their hotels, restaurants and wineries. Its called our napa valley spirit. One winery owner says his staff has been working for three weeks to get the tasting room set up to operate in the new normal. That means limiting groups to six people, making employees and guests wear masks when not sipping wine, and enforcing social distancing guidelines. You know, we will follow all of the protocols that have been set out for us to make sure everybody is safe and people will feel comfortable. New cases of coronavirus are on the rise in napa, but the county has reported just three covid19 deaths so far. The symbol of the black lives Matter Movement first painted on the streets of the nations capital, now its spreading to the bay area. First oakland, today San Francisco. These volunteers picked up brushes and rollers and bright yellow paint to create a lasting message, black lives matter, spelled out in big, bold letters on fulton street in the shadow of San Franciscos city hall. Its all about capturing the moment that were in right now. Were in a moment of empowerment for black people and people of color. Reporter andre jones is the artist behind the murals both in oakland and now a second in San Francisco. Sometimes you need big they say the writings on the wall. Well, the writings on the street. You need that inspiration. Reporter inspiration, he says, in a revived effort to fight racism and police brutality, and its catching on around the country. People are fed up, and, you know, some people everybody cant be on the front line and fight. Some people are not equipped for that. Some people know how to pray. Some people know how to paint. Reporter lake raymond brought her 2yearold daughter to paint too. My husband and i thought it was important that shes part of the movement, part of activism, to make the world a better place. We are seeing hundreds of colorful social justice murals pop up across the bay area. In oakland, a project was coordinated by jonathan delonge, who says he got the idea when he volunteered to help clean up after the protests. I ran into a restaurant where i knew the owners, and they had a broken window and asked me if i could help them find an artist to paint one of their pieces of plywood. I put a call to action, and so did he. The next morning, about 75 people showed up. Delonge says the project grew from there. In the end, hundreds of artists volunteered time to paint murals all over the city, many on boardedup windows. Nonprofits stepped up too, donating manpower and hundreds of gallons of paint. Fish and wildlife say a 4yearold boy was scratched earlier this afternoon. They believe the animal was possibly a Mountain Lion or a bobcat. The young boy was with his family but separated from the group when he was scratched on the back and his leg. Fish and wildlife officers searched for the animal but could not find it. Its an operation thats the first of its kind in the u. S. And potentially a new weapon in the fight against coronavirus. Doctors in illinois successfully performed a double Lung Transplant on a coronavirus patient. We want to show you the images of the devastated lungs of the covid19 patient. Doctors said the damage was some of the worst theyve ever seen, and it was the only way to save her life. The patient is a woman in her 20s and had been healthy prior to the virus. The patient is now in the icu and could go home in two to four weeks. Doctors are also closely monitoring coronavirus survivors who have been on ventilators to see whether they have scarring in their lungs that could lead them to also need transplants.
