And the legendary roots crew its the tonight show at home edition. And now, heres jimmy. Jimmy hey everybody. Welcome to the tonight show. Thank you so much for watching me i appreciate this. We have a great show tonight sean penn is on the show tonight. Just amazing that guy, man, and what hes doing. C. O. R. E. Is his Nonprofit Organization that hes put together this is ten years ago, but basically to give free coronavirus testing in places where its hard to get tested. And hes just amazing. Also we have dr. Robin diangelo, author of the book white fragility, and new music from weezer from their album van weezer. Weezers here. Thats a show right there. But again, thank you for watching lets get to some jokes here well, guys, across the country, coronavirus is on the rise but luckily, the president is laser focused on the task at hand the Trump Administration going to court to block publication of former National Security adviser john boltons tellall memoir. The Justice Department claiming its full of classified information that will harm National Security. Jimmy yep, cause if you want to stop people from reading a book, the best thing to do about it is shout, hey, everybody dont read this book dont preorder it either. If the lawsuit fails, trump has a backup plan. Hes going to build a chain link fence around every barnes noble. Can we see john bolton i think we have an early cover of the book. Republicans are mad at bolton for writing a book thats critical of trump. Democrats are mad that he didnt come out with all of this during the impeachment trial. Thats why the blurb on the back just says, no one is happy about this everyone. Memoir is titled the room where it happened. Dont confuse that with the other antitrump book the ramp where it hobbled. You can tell bolton is enjoying messing with trump look how he promoted his book today. Meanwhile, trump might also sue his niece for the tellall book shes writing. At this point trumps sued more books than hes read apparently boltons book has some pretty shocking revelations. The book basically says trump obstructed justice, did favors for dictators, and was clueless about basic geography. At one point, bolton says trump asked if finland was part of russia then trump corrected himself and said, never mind, i know its part of finlandia. Great cheese, excellent butter. Yep, bolton said he knew he had a duty to tell americans the truth once the check cleared for his book advance well, guys, as i mentioned, coronavirus cases are on the rise again, which makes this news even more surprising. Dr. Anthony fauci admits in a new interview that he has not talked to President Trump in two weeks. Jimmy yeah, fauci was like, but with a little bit of luck, i think we can make it a full month. Meawhile, don junior was like, psh, two weeks . Call me when you hit two years. In another interview, fauci was asked if he would attend trumps rally on saturday, and heres what he had to say. He told the daily beast he would not attend the rally, saying, quote, that im in a high risk category personally i would not of course not. Jimmy yeah, fauci doesnt think attending the rally is a a good idea. He was like, how do i put this id rather make out with a a public water fountain. Id rather wear a face mask i found on the floor of penn station. Id rather eat my breakfast directly off the table at dennys. Id rather lick a starbucks bathroom doorknob. Okay, we get it, buddy thats right people are shocked that trump hadnt spoken to his leading expert, dr. Fauci, in two weeks. It seems like their relationship might be hitting a boiling point, especially based on these voicemails dr. Fauci has been leaving trump. [ beep ] hello, donald, its dr. Fauci, from the pandemic we got a lot to discuss this week cases are spiking, shutdowns are lifting, so just give me a a call or, you know, cough three times and ill appear. All right, byebye [ beep ] hi, donald, me again so, uh, the second waves here, and i just saw you on tv maskless, body grinding on an american flag. This is my nightmare, donald this and getting swooped up by a hawk just give me a call. Okay, byebye. [ beep ] youre making me feel crazy here, donald is it me is it something i did . I knew i shouldnt have worn glasses around you, i look too smart. Look, is there another doctor . [ beep ] all right, so yous not just going to answer me okay, thats fine. I dont need you im like edema virus in subzero temperatures, okay i will survive ahem sorry about that talk soon, love you. Love you why did i say that [ beep ] jimmy well, if trump isnt taking social distancing protocols seriously, at least some people are. Nathans famous announcing that its going to be holding that International Hot dog eating contest this year, though, due to the coronavirus, you wont have those those cheering crowds jimmy yeah, i think its smart that there wont be a crowd. No one should have to tell their loved ones they caught coronavirus at a hot dog eating contest. No one im actually excited about the competition, because itll be fun watching people eat hot dogs through the sides of their face mask. Some more business news. After years of public pressure and criticism, quaker oats has decided to part with one of their most Famous Brands check this out an iconic and centuriesold brand of Breakfast Foods is acknowledging its origins are based on a racial stereotype, and its going away for good quaker oats is retiring its famed aunt jemima line of Food Products jimmy meanwhile, the Washington Redskins were like, dont look up, dont look up. They cant see us if they dont look up. Crap, they saw us. When the news broke, trump was bummed because aunt jemima was the only black woman in his cabinet. [ light laughter ] yep, lots of food mascots are happy about the decision when asked about it, tony the tiger was like, theeeeyre racist everyone is still talking about ted cruzs tweet where he challenged actor ron perlman to a wrestling match but not with himself ted wants perlman to wrestle congressman jim jordan it seems pretty wild that cruz is challenging actors to fight other politicians, but hes not backing down in fact, he just released this video statement. Hi, im ted cruz, the senates wettestlooking man i recently tweeted at ron perlman. Listen, hellboy you talk a good game when youve got hollywood makeup and stuntmen, but ill bet 10k you couldnt last five minutes in the wrestling ring with jim jordan without getting pinned. So get ready, hollywood, because youre about to face off against the toughest guys yet republican lawmakers who arent me please dont hit me jimmy and finally, according to an online conspiracy theory, an alternate reading of the mayan calendar suggests that the end of the world, initially predicted for 2012, could still yet happen here to discuss, we have noted online conspiracy theorist harlan farragut. Greetings, jimmy. Jimmy so harlan, what can you tell us about this new end of the world theory . According to ancient mesoamerican planetary alignment, we are facing imminent doom. Now, most people refuse to acknowledge this, but jimmy actually, the opposite a lot of people have a sense of doom right now yeah, yeah, yeah, but im crazier than them. See, im im twisted, man im different i notice things. Have you looked outside lately the world were living in is is totall jimmy bleak. Happy guy, and even youre doing my thing jimmy i was just agreeing with you i dont want you to agree this planet is hurtling toward a cataclysm jimmy agreed no shut up look im talking sarah connor at the playground in terminator 2. Hard r stuff jimmy sounds harsh, but could happen no jimmy, stop believing me im the crazy conspiracy guy no one believes thats my schtick, okay . Seriously if i dont have that, i dont even know who i am jimmy okay, all right, sorry. Look, why dont you just tell me your craziest apocalypse theory well, according to my research, its possible not confirmed, but possible that through a portal to the netherworld, we could be attacked by dragons jimmy wow, so crazy. See, now youre patronizing me jimmy im not patronizing you. Yeah, you are youre sort of putting it on for my benefit you know what . I gotta go, man. Jimmy earlier today, i got to chat with sean penn hes obviously an amazing actor but also an amazing humanitarian here is my chat with Sean Penn Jimmy sean penn, thank you so much for joining me i really appreciate this been looking forward to it. Jimmy i have to say, its beyond for me to interview you not just your acting, your, you know or actor sean penn, but youre like a mythical creature youre like someone that i honestly its like interviewing an actual, real life superhero can you imagine when the sean penn movie comes out what a great movie its going to be and please tell me someones writing the book please well, if theyre writing the book, i hope theyre writing the true story, which is that any one of us with a crew of volunteers and staff like ive got would be achieving, you know, quite a bit in the work that weve been doing. And ive been just so you know, i got a lot of superheroes working with me. Jimmy your nonprofit, c. O. R. E. It feels like every major awful disaster that happens, c. O. R. E. Is there in some way or another to help when did you decide, oh, we could do something right now for this this pandemic . I had this infrastructure available. I had, you know, an initial c. O. R. E. Ready in los angeles to respond to something much smaller. So what we did is, i just felt, well, ill ask the governor how can we help. And it was he Governor Newsom who led us to. Jimmy gavin newsom yeah to mayor garcetti in los angeles. And the Los Angeles Fire Department and the city of los angeles had already set up several of these sites, the initial testing sites. But they were populated by firefighters, which meant that those firefighters would not be available to do what would be their traditional duties you had 20 to 25 firefighters per site operating the sites and they were the skill set on the testing lane is not complicated. So we were able to get our people trained up. And now the sites are manned by between 25 and 70 c. O. R. E. Staff at each site. And we then were able to go to the governor again, expand out through california and at that point we had a a model. So, were now in several areas from navaho nation, new orleans, atlanta, chicago, detroit, new york. And now just started our mobile testing for protesters in washington, d. C. Because im very pro test and proprotest. [ light laughter ] because weve picked our lane, which is testing we think its kind of a sacred duty to offer testing to those whose lane it is to defend the republic and without those protesters wed have remained in a stasis that would have killed this country for sure and now i think we got a a chance jimmy have you always been an activist . And if so, where did you get it from or what inspired you to take this role . Well i had my father was a very, very patriotic man whod served his country, and flown low altitude Bombing Missions way beyond that where it became voluntary to do it, because the Life Expectancy was low. And then came back and was blacklisted by the country that hed just fought for and he was very civicminded, never got bitter about it. Something i admire a lot in him, aspire to in me, and i think that informed some of it and then when i was in a very formative moment in my late teens, someone gave me someone started playing me it was my younger brother started playing me songs of phil ochs. And in pursuing an understanding of phil ochs and all that, it became a really, really inspiring sense of what our actual inherent responsibility is as citizens. But i will say that the best of the movements right now, i think are have the most tangible are the most tangible hope of the first time that i as a parent wont have that whisper in my ear saying, is it really fair to bring children in this world now . I would be thrilled to be a kid in this world now. Because you can take all your lack of moderation and put it into something so productive if you do it smartly. And really find at an early stage of life that really important moment where youve just gotten to be on your own as a young adult and find that your work can matter and i think once thats in a a young person, it never leaves them and they stay invested and if you have a citizenry as invested as they are now, along with a leadership that i can say, you know you know lets say at the very least, theres a void of leadership but when you consider real leadership mixed with people who are willing to hold a great leaders feet to the fire when policies go awry, then youve got a country. Jimmy hey everybody, were back with sean penn. C. O. R. E. Is doing something amazing to raise money for this nonprofit. If you go to coreresponse. Org, you can find out how to volunteer, where testing is, but youre also going to find out about this event that a lot of people wont even believe it was really gonna happen. But, youre going to do a virtual table read of fast times at ridgemont high. Yeah, this was funny thing. Out of the blue, right at the moment that we were going to throw ourselves into this covid response, not having any idea what lane we were going to take, or how much it was going to cost relative to existing budget i had already tapped out you know, i dont know if ive got two dollars left in the bank right now with everything that weve been doing and happening before that. So i thought, where are we going to get the dough we werent going to be able to throw a big fundraiser at that point, not the traditional sort so, out of the blue, dane cook threw us a check that got us started. And, really got us started jimmy wow. Do you know dane did you know it was i didnt know him id met him once, but he followed what we were doing prior to this. And dane had this idea to do fast times at ridgemont high as a table reading and all of a sudden, a lot of fantastic actors that, you know, i think it will be very funny. Were not being were not paying any attention to age at all. [ laughter ] jimmy good but i wont be playing the role that i played, which gives me a chance ill be playing a different role that will give me a chance to watch somebody else play that. And im really looking forward to that. Jimmy i heard a story, and you can tell me if its true or not true, but let me just tell you what i heard is that when you auditioned for fast times, obviously, amy heckerling, great director cameron crowe, amazing writer and director as well you came in for the audition and i think you said, im not going to audition, i know who spicoli is so, if you want if you want to see him, you have to hire me. Is that true its mostly true. The way i remember it, was that i long before i had a penny in my pocket, had a kind of feeling of entitlement as an actor, not because i thought i was so good, but because i thought the rest were not so good and that gave me an awful lot of confidence. And i read this part and i just said, i know this thing. But this was true of all auditions. I resented every audition, and hence, i was terrible at it and selfconscious jimmy its the worst and i thought, i need the mask of it being a job to get the music in me and go and so, i just wanted them to just give it to me, trust me, dont they know whats going on inside here by osmosis and but i auditioned, and i and terribly. And flat, and i knew i wasnt willing to hit the kind of music of this character that i thought it was and was had familiarity with too. Id grown up with a lot of people like that and so, they dismissed me and i left and then a casting director named don phillips, came who was in the room at the audition, saw the terrible audition, but he and i dont know, maybe cameron, i dont remember exactly, but some of the people in the room thought why would we ever ask him to come back . And others were Strong Enough in their argument. And don phillips came running into the parking lot where my broken down mazda i borrowed was sitting and i was just about to leave and he said, get back in here and audition your ass off, Something Like that. He says, youre not going anywhere. And i came in, and as result of that faith, i kind of gave it a little bit and off of that, they took a a gamble and then we had a a great time making the movie. Jimmy and the rest is history, yeah. So you will not be playing spicoli . You wont even hint of who might be, but its someone we know someone you know and theres people involved in this, all of them, theyre all people you know and it really it really gives me a chuckle i dont know if its a secret about whos in it or not, because but i have to leave it its danes thing. And again, just a gift to c. O. R. E. You know, cause the whole thing is to drive support to c. O. R. E. And all these volunteers and id like to just get in on that that when people hear about c. O. R. E. And c. O. R. E working in all of these different areas, the people that we are hiring, they are from the area, serving the most marginalized communities in this country. And they, and we, really do need support jimmy everyone watching, go to coreresponse. Org. Whatever you can give would be amazing. Sean penn, thank you for doing what youre doing, keep doing. Youre an inspiration to millions, including me youre so inspiring. Thank you, buddy thanks for giving the time. Jimmy our next guest is the author of white fragility why its so hard for white people to talk about racism. Here is dr. Robin diangelo jimmy dr. Robin diangelo, thank you so much for doing the tonight show. I really appreciate it i know how busy you are, and Everyone Wants to talk to you right now. So, this means a lot to me thank you, thank you, thank you. And thank you so much for having me. Jimmy your book, white fragility why its so hard for white people to talk about racism, this came out in 2018 yes jimmy and its been on the bestseller list ever since then it has, yes jimmy and right now it is number one on all the lists i looked at. And its also, from what i read, its sold out everywhere as well. An unfortunate time for it to be sold out, but yes. Jimmy well, heres what i did, i got it on kindle. Ah, okay. Jimmy i dont know if you saw this, it went viral online a Flight Attendant was greeting people on her plane, and some gentleman came on and he was reading your book, it opened up a whole conversation yeah. Im glad you brought that up because it actually illustrates several really important points about this i mean, on the one hand, the story was special because a black woman and a white man had engaged conversation he talked to her with humility and openness and that was exceptional but lets just notice that, that that would be exceptional you know, theres a question i often ask when im in front of a mixedrace group and i ask the black people in the room a kind of rhetorical question how often have you attempted to give a white person feedback on their inevitable and often unaware racist assumptions or behaviors and had that go well for you . Never. Number two response, rarely. And ill never forget asking a a group, okay, so what if you could just give us feedback on our inevitable and often unaware racist assumptions and behaviors . And ill never forget this black man raising his hand and saying, it would be revolutionary. Jimmy wow. And you know, just take that in i just want all the white people to just take that in. Revolutionary that we would receive the feedback with grace, reflect and seek to change our behavior. Thats how difficult we are. Jimmy wow. Thats how big of aholes we are. Jimmy yeah but on the other hand, you know, thats not a very tall order. Really, that thats a revolution but we cant get there from the current paradigm that says only mean people who want to hurt others based on race ever could do so. So we just have to change what we understand it means to perpetrate racism. Jimmy yeah, and well, the term white fragility, did you coin that term did you come up with that . I did jimmy what does it mean for exactly well the fragility part is meant to capture how little it takes to cause white people to melt down in defensiveness and umbrage. I mean, we make it so miserable for black people to talk to us about what theyre experiencing from us, that most of the time they just dont. Its not worth it. It tends to get worse, not better and so in that way white fragility is quite powerful. And it protects the racial status quo jimmy can you help me in a a way, i wanna ask a question, like how does one say how does a white person say that theyre not racist well, white people often say, im not racist. I know you have. I have done things in my life i recognize as racist today. I would not do them again. They were neither intentional or even conscious, and yet they wounded other people nonetheless. I think white people should remove that phrase from their vocabulary, im not racist. Its not trust me, its not convincing to black people as long as we define racism as individual, intentional acts of meanness, then i would agree with you that most white people are not racist but when im talking about the racism that i have, the racism that you have, its the result of living in a society in which racism is the foundation we all absorb it we all absorb it theres no way we could exempt ourselves from it. And so we need to change our question from if im racist, to which most white people will say no jimmy yeah to, how have i been shaped by the forces of racism i was born into . And, how is it manifesting in my life . Its a really different question jimmy yeah but if i asked, if and the answer is no, what further action is required of me to challenge racism nothing, im not racist. If i ask how have i been shaped and what is it looking like in my life, well, that sets me on a lifelong process and i can just tell you, look around at the society. White people thinking were not racist is not and has not ended racism we have to change our paradigm we can never be complacent jimmy so where can white people start i would say start with asking yourself this question what does it mean to be white . Most white people cant answer that question. And if i cant hold what it means to be white, i cannot hold what it means not to be white. And im going to have no Critical Thinking on this topic, no skills to navigate this uncomfortable conversation, and no emotional capacity to withstand how uncomfortable the conversation is and that means black people cant be their authentic selves with us. There are consequences to us not being able to answer that question and if you start there, how has being white shaped my life and how is that manifesting in my life . That will set you on a lifelong path jimmy dr. Diangelo, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me and being on the tonight show. Id love to have you back. And i really appreciate us talking like this. Thank you so much. Id love to be back thank you. Jimmy a performance from weezer when we get back. If there was one immediate commitment we made at wynn when we closed in march, it was keeping all 15,000 teammembers on board with full pay and free testing for all. We then focused our fivestar level of service to all who needed it and did what we always do. We cared about everything and everyone. In our communities and in our homes, we were there. With food and supplies and with love. We made improvements to peoples lives. We strove to be better. And we made people happy. Like we always do. This closure may have temporarily taken us out of wynn and encore. But it couldnt take the wynn and encore out of us. And now. We are proud to welcome you back. Jimmy its almost time, everybody.
