Doctors are taking their skills to shows fighting for social justice. One of those doctors is an associate professor at medicine at ucf and faculty director of the do not Harm Coalition. Thank you for joining us. What is the do not Harm Coalition . Its the do no Harm Coalition which is the oath we took as doctors when we became physicians. We identify and address the structures causing poor health and the people that we serve. We work to dismantle those structures and racism and Police Violence are two such structures. Give me an example of what the do no Harm Coalition has been doing to help demonstrators. Can you give us some examples at recent rallies . Our role is to serve our communities in ways that advance their health. Right now theres a need in the streets because of the violence being used by police against people protesting Police Violence. So they are using chemical weapons right now outlawed by international law, weapons that can make things worse during covid such as tear gas. So the use of tear gas causes coughing and you have thousands of people in the streets pulling off their masks to cough. The police are also using rubber bullets and other weapons that cause eye injuries. These weapons carry a 3 mortality rate which is alarming as we watch them used against people exercising their First Amendment rights. As Health Workers we see how it impacts Peoples Health and we are present in whatever way our Community Need us to take care of them in their struggle for health and justice. What is it like being in the middle it all as a doctor and activist . Im a doctor. Im a physician. Thats what we do. We address our communitys health concerns. You are putting your life in danger, increasing your health in a medical capacity to only work within their bounds of their experience and medical professionals are not street med. Im not a street medic. So street medicine is a beautiful history of separate group of Health Care Workers who are using antiracist and antioppressive measures to Impact Health and theyve been on the front line of taking care of people and medical professionals weve been training them to be able to work in partnership and to support in greater ways because when you have a mass protest and Police Violence in that situation, its often hard to get an ambulance to show up in a timely way. Were helping to temperize. We have talked to doctors about the use of tear gas and how it could spread covid more easily. What are you seeing out there . I know they have reduced the use of tear gas in recent weeks here in the bay area. I know its very contagious. Are you seeing people Wearing Masks and social distancing and doing what they can during this movement . Absolutely. I have not seen any crowd that ive been a part of or anyone on social media that are present without masks. Theres some recent data out yesterday that showed that these protests because people are masking up and social distancing outside, we havent seen large transmissions of covid through these protests. I dont feel unsafe in that setting coming prepared as i will with the ppe that i need. Because of covid i feel more afraid of safety because of police and several cities across the country are outlawing the use of these weapons against the people. I think that is the way to go. Its to start removing funding from police and from groups that are creating trauma and moving that funding into systems of care of our health care and our community care. A movement going on right now as we speak around the country with that. Doctor, continue your good work out on the streets and in the hospital. Thanks for joining us. Thank you. Theres a coin shortage in the united states. Perhaps youve seen the stories across social media. What does that actually mean . A coin shortage . Lets bring in chris chmura for his two cents. Good evening. Lets talk about this coin shortage and what it is not. It is not a run on the banks where people empty their accounts and destabilize the financial system. Thats not happening. Todays coin short aage is due the covid19 shutdown. People that deal in cash, most of those witnesses are closed. Banks run short on coins. Also the mint says it slowed production of new coins due to covid19. It kept workers home. Heres good news. The mint says full production resumed on june 15th and the coin shortage is easing. The mint is partnering with the Federal Reserve to ensure the health of our nations circulating coin supply as cash retail transactions increase, the coin will increase. It wont mean for family like yours. Most money is transferred electronically. They recommended that banks ease restrictions on loose coin deposits. Maybe you should take that found money to the bank. Back to you. Thanks so much, chris. Lets go to jeff. A consistently warm week ahead, is that right . It is, yes. I know some of you are really excited about that. I know others are saying, man, summer is here. I dont have ac. It will get uncomfortable. The coast does definitely look like a spot where you can get some relief from that heat as you move through this week. Well get you all of the details in that forecast. I want to start off tonight with a look at the pollen. If youre like me, suffer from allergies from time to time and things have been floating around lately. Grass and pine in moderate categories. Weeds and mold in the low categories. If you woke up this morning with itchy eyes and sniffles, it could be grass or pine and lets hope its not covid19. So lets get a look at the weather pattern. Theres a lot happening on the Weather Board for june. I want to highlight two things im following. This area of hot high pressure, circulation around this is bringing up the hot air from the south. If you notice it today just a little bit humid out there from the system offshore. Circulation around that is helping to bring in slightly humid air. A whole mix of stuff happening here across the bay area even though we have those sunny skies for most of us. Well start off tomorrow morning with some 60s here over the south bay and peninsula with a bit of fog near the coast. Trivalley will be mild at 70 and sunny. As you go near the bay, San Francisco and north bay, do expect some of those areas of patchy clouds and also some isolated fog as we start off tomorrow morning. All in all i think we have a nice beginning here for us as we roll through tuesday. Down here in the south bay, we are going to, yes, be warm. Upper 80s and low 90s. Be ready for that heat. No 100s over the east bay. 92 in danville. Closer to the bay, that ocean breeze has you at 76 in oakland. Peninsula, anywhere from 61 in Half Moon Bay to 86 in palo alto. San francisco, a chilly day with southwesterly wind. 58 in the marina. 56 in the mission. For the north bay, the one spot that will hit 100 because theres no influence from the ocean breeze out in clear lake. Youll be the hottest. Otherwise, lots of 70s and 80s here for the north bay. Now, my extended forecast youll see in San Francisco does keep some 70s returning wednesday, thursday, friday, and saturday. Then the wind picks up sunday with a colder system. Gusts of 20 to 40 miles per hour. Across inland valleys, well go to 90 on wednesday. A 20 chance of a shower. Not great for us. If youre doing traveling, i want to let you know as you move through tuesday, about a quarter to half inch potential here of some rainfall right over the sierra so that will be something certainly to watch. Also the wind there on sunday gusts of 20 to 40 miles per hour. So i really think two big items coming our way as we move through this week will be the heat and winds kicking up as we head through this upcoming weekend. A lot happening over the next seven days. We can all kind of navigate through it. I dont know about you, but this week it feels like a good week. Last week i felt like it was just everything on repeat for me. This week i feel like things are moving along. I dont want to jinx it. Lets knock on wood over here. We share in your optimism, jeff. Thanks so much.
