Perhaps theyll be just as awed by the majesty of the hover dam, were you at least behaving or the statue of lieberty, or safely when you were in new york Yellowstone Park back in february this is like being at a i was i was trying i restaurant with your dad the was at a giant Charity Event first time he spots quinoa on a menu what the hell is quinnoa . So it was hard to behave safely i ever, uh, tell you about the and it was just there was time i boned your mom in a like rumblings of it in the air. Mohegan suns . So i at moments would just seriously, how has he never seen hand myself over to, like, or heard the word yosemite before normal behavior and i shook he even took two tries and got 200 thousand peoples hands at it wrong both times. The event. Yosemites . [ laughter ] that cant be right. And and Martha Stewart was is it yosemites . There and i dont want to, you you know, i dont believe trump know, i dont want to support is some undercover russian spy any conspiracy theories, but she who infiltrated america, but if had just gotten back from china he was, this would definitely be where the virus was at that a dead giveaway. Moment very active im not spy my name is bob cowboy, i love of what he thinks the secretary and she left because of the american things. Virus. Yosemite, muslin, the and were sharing this washingtons penis. On is what he came up with. Information, the facetoface conversation at which i was like, Martha Stewart, back away a man whos done a fantastic job, secretary of the interior from me, please. David, if you could come up and [ laughter ] say a few words . But, yeah. And he really has it was but if i was to get it from Martha Stewart it would he has been he loves it have been completely he loves the interior. Seth oh, yeah. The best case scenario. Seth he loves the interior seth because you know, it would be that it would be is he in charge of national that artisan artisan vibe. Parks or a luxury car . Exactly [ laughter ] loves the interior. Seth you this movie, all leather. Which is fantastic, is based on white stitching. A short story by simon rich, who you can tell his brain is slowly breaking as he thinks, but interior means inside, and i also wrote the screenplay. Just named a lot of outside places he was a writer at snl. Is this a trap . And i had forgotten a couple clearly trump has no idea what things the secretary of the interior does hes like a boss who sees you one, that he wrote your eating a turkey sub at work and tells everyone, hey, check out monologue the first time you hosted at snl. Old turkey sub over here and two, that you were only guy loves turkey. 23yearsold first time you then later that same day he was hosted snl, which is incredibly young talking about the social media app tiktok, which hes been yeah, i was pretending he has power to and i think simon was actually unilaterally ban on his own, and around the same age. But, although he looked maybe he didnt even seem to know what nineyearsold, i think. It is. Tiktok is very successful seth yeah. He was he maybe looks 23 now. It does tremendous business in the United States. People are riveted by it exactly [ laughter ] i mean, i have many friends when yeah, and it was really a lot to they saw that announcement see that my monologue was not theyre calliing i think even conceived of and saturday their kids love it afternoon i think was they dont cause they dont get to see approaching and, again, i was a their kids anymore but they are its an amazing 23yearold young man who grew thing, whatever it may be. Up watching snl and wanted to seth whatever it may be . Make a good impression well, when you figure out what it is, can you tell me, too . I was really, really, really, nervous. Because i also dont understand it and then simon, this kid but at least im not threatening this guy who seemed, again, like to ban it. A child, came up and handed me tell you one thing this thing tiktok is not the reason your friends cant see their kids anymore. Hey, man, i wrote this. And i read it and it was like oh, cool. Wordforword, like, perfect yeah jokes about kids who hate their dad. I literally didnt change one thanks, seth grr. Thing and i remember thinking, seth and look, on some level, a 74yearold shouldnt if this guy ever writes a movie know what tiktok is. About a guy who gets pickled id last thing i want to do is pick love to be in it up my phone and see trump doing the toosie slide, but if youre [ laughter ] going to ban someone, you should seth i went with you at least google it like i did, to make that toosie know, after working there a long slide joke time and when i went back and didnt google how to pronounce it though, so hopefully that was in the ballpark. Hosted i had this whole new respect for what we put hosts all you have to do is type in through because there was this tiktok. Sense of, oh, the monologue. You at least you know what its called, right . We can push it off, we can push it off, forgetting that when you actually have to host a show and saw tic tac its the first time youre gonna seth i saw a great tic tac talk to the audience, youd of someone hiking at yosemite really like to have it under control by like monday, tuesday ideally. You like to have some sense i didnt finish the whole thing. It was 40 seconds long of what the first things youre the middle got slow. This is why trump rarely steps going to be expected to say are. Outside his rightwing media bubble [ laughter ] his brain is pureed cottage cheese and he cant withstand but, yeah. Seth yes the slightest scrutiny inside but ive since it is lorne the bubble who said we dont do the show the ghouls who profit off him can move his arms around and because its ready we do it make him seem alive so they can because its saturday at keep partying at his cool house. 11 30, which are very impactful words on me. But when he steps outside, we seth yes and end up with Jonathan Swan from seth so impactful that i axios looking like a tourist who think hes he said it just watched a times square elmo drop his pants and take a maybe he said it maybe a million times. [ bleep ] on the sidewalk. Exactly and i apply it to nonsnl things, which i dont know if it i mean, to be honest, forget works, but i think it does times square thats the face youd make if seth you your monologue, you saw the real elmo take a for those that dont remember, dump because it was a long time ago now, was the sort of the idea but hes a hes a puppet behind it was you reading a monologue you had written when where does that even come from . You just knew this interview was you were 13 that you wanted to going to be do if you ever hosted snl, but even before trump sat down, when you were actually doing standup he walked into the room holding as a 13yearold a stack of papers, you knew it this was this is not a crazy was going to be bat[ bleep ] idea crazy. What was your material like when you dont want to put thepa you were 13 . Rs in a binder, um, it was 13yearold stuff. Mr. President . [ laughter ] no. It was i would write about my no, i think loose paper projects strength. Grandparents that was the first joke i ever wrote. Those printouts were like the it was my grandparents chekhovs gun of the interview you were just waiting for them i would go watch tgif at their to make an appearance, and when house every friday while my family went to synagogue and i didnt want to go. I think its under control. And they would argue about ill tell you what how they were both deaf and they 1,000 americans are dying a day. Would argue with each other and they are dying. Thats true. Those were my first jokes i and you have it is what it wrote. Is because we are so much better at it was like, my grandparents arguing with each other and not testing than any other country knowing what the other person in the world, we show more was arguing about. [ laughter ] cases. I the figure i look at is seth this is a this is a death. And death is going up now. Okay. Thats 1,000 a day. Greatgrandparents if you look at death the premise of the film is that yeah, its going up again lets look. You play both yourself in modern daily death day and yourself from 100 years take a look at some of these ago. Charts id love to were going to look lets look. Well, right here your greatgreatgrandfather who was pickled and preserved at a United States is lowest in pickle factory and so basically youre playing two versions of yourself, but were lower than the world one from a century earlier lower than the world . Were lower than what does that yes europe in what it was weird in what . Take a look right here um heres case death. E ing death as [ laughter ] proportion of cases. Im talking about death as a it was not it was not a proportion of population choice i made lightly, because, yeah theres not you know, i think thats where the u. S. Is really theres a spotty tradition of bad. Well actors playing two roles in a much worse than south korea, film germany, et cetera but, you cant do that you have to why cant i do that really helped the narrative. Seth okay there is so much thats what convinced me to unpack here, obviously. Honestly in the end and this but my first thought is, idea of, you know, if we met our generally speaking, when youre the president reaching for a grandparents when they were the same age of us, what would they piece of paper, saying to an think of us . Interviewer, if you look at would they like us death, thats not a great place my grandparents barely tolerated me as my grandparents. To be. Powerpoint presentations at the office that start, all right, like, my grandfather was a tough everyone, thanks for coming in man. He was a plumber so if you look at death he was in the war. Rarely, almost never, end with you know promotions and he had no time for my my modern you know my modern second, what is this chart crap this is the fakest asslookin chart ive ever seen [ laughter ] like, it did not it was not entertaining to him. Its just four random bars with i remember one time as a kid, different colors i like my toenail was too is this the printer test sheet long and i asked him to help me as you can see were doing cut and it he ripped my entire toenail off. Great with cyan. [ laughter ] cant even see what it says on seth i was also because the yaxis theres also a very theres a great amount of heart in this this looks like a prop theyd give a fourth grader playing a film as well businessman in a school play yeah. Im pretty sure this is what seth its an incredibly George Costanza handed out when silly concept. Theres just fantastic jokes he gave everyone donations to n. But, you know, theres this idea of, can a previous generation be proud of, you know, the next generation even though theyre doing Different Things and different accomplishments. I read it an interview with you today where you were saying that your grandparent were never that impressed with your success, but still be super psyched to go to a mcdonalds [ laughter ] yeah. They love and they would steal napkins. That was my grandparents [ laughter ] my grandmother stole everything and that was to her, like, no her greatest accomplishments were the things, like, we would go to dinner and literally youd be youd see her being like, this is a nice plate and then you go to her house the next day, and she would have the plate. [ laughter ] because she would put it in her purse. And so they really coveted things like napkins and plates and so like, the fact that i had like a whole closet full, like paper towel rolls was like very impressive to my grandparents. But the fact that i was in movies, they would always be like, you think youre a big shot you think youre a big shot . That was that was, their favorite expression. Seth heres more of my conversation with Seth Rogen Seth this film is in many ways about judaism, about things that survive over generations, about the different relationships you can have with your religion. There is a joke that is so funny about, basically where the 100yearold version, the greatgreatgrandfather finds out that jonas salk cured polio. And his first question is, was he jewish . [ laughter ] was he jewish . Yeah, which is that taps into a very jewish thing. Which is jews are very proud of other jewish accomplishments [ laughter ] and hes so psyched when he finds out that jonas salk is jewish and nothing evidences this probably phenomena more than the book great jews in sports. Which is a book every jewish person has which is a small book, but that is how much we want to know what every jewish accomplishment in history ever was and we will take the six great jews in sports and make an entire book about them [ laughter ] seth you you mentioned, was it from the jump, was it the idea that you would play both characters was there a time that i mean, because its not necessarily a situation where that had you toh technically and as off between doing the second halves of the seasons, right well know, we did the whole first half as herschel and then we went back and did the whole other half as ben. And its not something i went into lightly and i actually tried to get out of it several times. We actually did a table read where Ike Barinholtz read the herschel role at one point and he was hilarious and i remember thinking like, we got we dont need me to do both of them. We got ike. But people but the other filmmakers really wanted me to play both and roles and eventually i wrapped my head around doing it. But yeah, it was incredibly complicated. But what i did find, is i do not like working with other actors and i do prefer working with myself [ laughter ] seth well, its actors actors are tough. And when you remove as many of them from the equation as possible it makes things a lot easier seth although i think i would like to provide you the opportunity, because you had a standin and i imagine that was somebody who, you know, theres not going to be a lot of glory in being offcamera. Yes seth but obviously this was an incredibly Important Role in this film. Yes ian pogue was his name and he he was my standin he played opposite me in almost every scene. And i remember telling him, like, specifically, like, the better job you do, the less it will seem like you exist. And seth really . [ laughter ] like thriving for a complete evaporation on your part, and that thats the bullseye youre trying to hit. And then he really did an amazing job and it was like in some ways a very like selfless you know he was compensated, but in ways a very selfless thing for him to do was essentially acting the entire movie with the understanding he would be removed from it later and he would and he played both roles and whoever i wasnt playing he would play. And he was very he was great. And he was very, like, malleable and would get my blocking and sometimes i would tell him, like just dont talk like im gonna pretend im he as im thinking of it, but you just sit there and look at me. And he was like, okay, no problem. And he was a great partner it was actually a lot of fun and he made my performance much better, yeah seth i i was really taken how quickly you forget it is happening at a separate time and i imagine so much work went into that. And ultimately, like what you were saying. Like you have to, like, do all of this work to make it then look invisible for the audience too. Sort of remember, you know theres not to give anything away, but theres the moment later in the film where you start looking more alike yeah. Seth and thats when you remember, oh, this seth does all the yeah, no. It was another one of those things where like the better job we did the less it would seem like we did something. It would be like if the funnier you were the less funny you seemed [ laughter ] like, the better the more our jobs were done correctly the less we seemed like we were achieving anything special or complicated in any way, shape or form which was a weird goal to be chasing, but, yeah it was it was a worthy cause, i thought, if nothing else seth you, yet, are also finding time for another worthy cause. I have seen photos of some of your ceramic work lately yes seth um, these are ashtrays . I make ashtrays i make vases i make all sorts of things heres a yeah this is an ashtray ive made this is when i seth the ashtray and the part that i really want to point out, that is a lighter holder on top, yes well no, you can put your joint in there and then you can put your your lighter in there. Seth oh, look at that. Two little separate things. I have a few different designs around [ laughter ] seth do you keep those all for yourself do they stay in the family have you gifted them to anyone ive given some away. Ill send you a vase, if you want one seth thatd be very nice thank you. [ laughter ] you got one coming your way [ laughter ] seth hey man, its always such a pleasure to see you congrats on the film its really great. She stars in the new film i used to go here, which is on demand on august 7th she also stars in the podcast blood ties from wondery. The Second Season is available now. Heres my conversation with Gillian Jacobs seth hi, gillian, how are you . Im very well so happy to be with you. Seth we were talking right before we started. We have not seen each other in a very long time the first time we met, you and my brother were doing a pilot together in l. A. And we were very excited to meet you, because you are from pittsburgh where our dad is from. Yes and i was intimidated to meet you both, because i knew you were diehard pittsburgh sports fans and i dont know anything about the steelers so i was nervous [ laughter ] seth were happy to be around anyone whos from pittsburgh, whether theyre a steelers fan or not. Particularly because were, i think you know, had multiple because its very thriving time as far as actors from pittsburgh and every time theyre on the show, i like to check to see if they have a pittsburgh accent, because i, for my money, its the most beautiful accent in the american jargon. Can we hear, can we hear it from you . Oh, seth, yinz is real, real nice about that nat but i dont really have one anymore. I havent been dahntahn in years. Seth you havent been dahntahn ive been dahntahn in dahntahn pittsburgh in a real, real long time so its gone seth is your family still there . My mom. Yes, yes seth and your family now this is before your time but they owned a brewery in pittsburgh is this true well, yeah. In erie, pennsylvania. So not far from there, yeah. My moms family owned a brewery, and i have never had a drink of alcohol in my life so i am a real outsider, in my own family seth and is it true that you sort of made this announcement and have been met with blank stares, im assuming oh, yes so at a very young age, i announced to everyone that i was never going to drink and it probably felt like a betrayal of my entire family and their legacy, but i have stuck to it. So seth you stuck to it its obviously worked out incredibly well. So hopefully, they can appreciate that. Yes, theyve come around. Seth you this is a fantastic film i know this was supposed to be in south phi which is sort of one of the first things we lost to the pandemic so its available on demand now. You play a writer who has a book that is not wellreceived but you still go back to your alma mater to speak this was very different fromcoee experience yes because i went to a college that had no campus, had no real social life. I went to college in manhattan i lived in Lincoln Center for college. So even just having a lawn to sit on would have been a dream for us seth i do its so rare to meet someone went to juilliard who doesnt say it out loud. So im going to say it on your behalf because im like blown away by the fact that youre reserved actually saying that you went to juilliard. [ laughter ] but you did you did chase the College Experience from an early age as well. Yes so no one could understand why, but i voluntarily chose to go to different colleges during the summer and take academic classes. So i very proudly announced to my classmates at juilliard that i was like going to go and take classes during the summer and no one could understand why but i wanted to get a taste of that, to be on a real campus and to be in a lecture hall and all of that. Was the College Experience i had. And now, i have a great longing for it the idea one of those days were like, and it seemed so hard at the time to have the Attention Span of an hour to listen to a very brilliant person talk about great work of literature and i wish i could go back and do it again. Considering that you werent in one of those schools, do you think you got more out of it than maybe i did yeah. I think i really appreciated it and was excited about it, because i wasnt really getting any of that at my school so, yeah i think i was able to appreciate it, but maybe i had also slightly hyped it in my mind so i also couldnt quite live up to the notions that i had. Seth what about the fact that, you know, this is a film with collegeage cast . Did you feel you know, nothing makes you feel older than because i think always in my head, im like, im almost college age. [ laughter ] and then youve seen what an actual College Student looks like now how was that was that jarring for you i know youre a good deal younger than me, but still the cast was so lovely and they never made me feel like i was the weird older person the only time it would get really awkward was when they would Start Talking about shows they watched when they were kids and i had not only not watched them, but never heard of them. And so, i would get very quiet and try to, like, back away hoping that they didnt turn the conversation towards me, because that is when i felt it most glaringly. But other than that, they were awesome and i really loved hanging out with them. I dont know if theyd say the same about me. Seth it is true that i do feel like theres just a bunch of shows that are very popular that they dont even tell people my age about like, they fully make them invisible to me. Almost as if i know, if i were to know about them, it would make them much less cool automatically remove all yeah i know so i just would be, like, uhhuh oh, wow. Okay cool i have no idea what youre talking about. That and, like, singing theme songs from favorite tv shows when they were kids. Or like Disney Channel movies. Seth did you find ive heard people say now that community is one of those shows that people are finding now, like a whole new generation of people. Has that happened for you . Yeah. And its that funny thing of friends kids who have now discovered it. Yeah it went on netflix, i think april 1st, and so i do feel like there is a whole new group of people discovering it. And, so yeah i now have the experience of my friends children discovering it [ laughter ] seth youre doing the Second Season of a podcast with josh gadd. So the first season, you recorded in normal times i would imagine you guys were able to be in the same room with each other while you were recording . Yes, yes seth ah, how was do you feel like you guys figured it out and how to execute with the limitations of the pandemic . Yeah. I think the smartest thing they did, its called blood ties. And the company wondery made it. And they shipped us all the recording equipment, and then, the audio engineer very patiently explained to me how to set it all up. Because i had no idea what i was doing. But they would have us on, you know, like a zoom call like this, so we were still recording live with each other even though we were all separated. So it really did feel like i was still acting in realtime with josh gadd in the scene so i was so grateful to have something that i could, you know, a job i could do from home so it was great. Seth and even before that happened, how have you found, you know i talked to a lot of people who are now, you know, sort of acting in the podcast medium have you i really do i mean, like, i actively pursued voiceover work. First, i would just, if there was an animated show i really liked, i would, like, write the creators a letter. Like, i was on Aqua Teen Hunger force years ago, because i was obsessed with that show. You know, i was on adventure time. So i pursued voiceover work maybe out of laziness, because i dont like doing hair and makeup and being in costume so for me, this has been ideal seth i like to think that every letter you wrote, you started with, i never had a drink and even when i was in college, i went to other colleges. And like, if you can get past that, i think youd really enjoy having me on the show. Seth well, congrats on season two with the podcast and congrats on the film and always so nice to see you, gillian. Thank you its so great to see you say hi to your brother, please seth i will do that. Give you my world how can i, when you wont take it from me you can go your own way go your own way your wireless. Your rules. Only with xfinity mobile. Seth i want to thank my guests seth rogen and Gillian Jacobs i want to thank Thaddeus Dixon and the 8g band. Stay tuned for lilly singh. Stay safe. Wash your hands. Wear a mask. We love you
