I dont even remember when. It only gets better when you switch and save with geico. Is it going to stick around for some time . It looks like it will stick around. Even though we will see some right now on california shifts in the wind, right now live, building a life line to this northerly bay save thousands of animals ravaged by the fires. Area from the bear fire as well for several weeks, we were as the oak fire. And these two fires combined are 24 7 and couldnt have done it putting massive plumes of smoke without these amazing in the air. And we can see on the satellite veterinarians. Then, want to lose some weight . Use a clock as your guide. Imagery how thats moving directly into the bay area, also just by taking it very slow dropping some ash. Well, this is a look at our live one hour a day. View in San Francisco right now. Plus, the california girl looks pretty eerie and ominous. Thats an ace on the court. Tennis has taught me a lot of we also have the marine layer. Life lessons to be able to work you can see that fog thats over hard on my own, to be able to the golden gate bridge. Achieve my own goals, set goals. And the reason why it looks so dark there. I think its really rewarding. But we are also seeing these and amber orange and yellow skies. Thats not a filter. This is a look at the camera looking from the berkeley hills. Now, our meteorologist rob mayeda explained this online yesterday talking about why our skies turn orang you have all of this smoke pollution. Its because of those longer wavelengths that come from the sunshine. And only the red and orange pass through. So we dont get the shorter wavelengths that we normally do at this time of day, which would cause the sky to appear blue. So were going to talk more about this. You can find this story on nbcbayarea. Com where you can also find more information about our air quality. Well talk about our wind and temperatures in the forecast coming up in a few minutes, marcus. We want to take a live look for you at the golden gate bridge. Look at that. You know what . You cant see the sun at all. Barely seeing the sun. But you know what . This is not fog. This is all from the bear wildfire in oroville. This is blanketing the bay area with smoke and ash and is just one reason we are having another spare the air day. Nbc bay areas bob redell is live for us in dublin here where the skies are really that eerie color. This looks like something doesnt even look like the real skyline behind you. Reporter yeah, good morning to you, marcus. You kn you no longer have to wonder what the martian sky looks like. We can see that orange, dirty smoke thats blanketing us right now. And this of course from the fire thats burning over a hundred miles away. Heres a photo that was taken by professional photographer. This is in sausalito north of San Francisco earlier this morning. You can see the boats and the orange sky as the sun began to rise. And heres another video. My photographer captured this sunrise over livermore beautifully in this time lapse earlier this morning as the sunlight tried to break through that thick smoke. That is coming from the bear fire over a hundred miles away in oroville. And its not just smoke but ash. And that ash is especially noticeable on car windshields. Today is another spare the air day. Its the 23rd one in a row. The air Quality Management district says this stretch of bad air isnt the worst in terms of severity but definitely in terms of longevity. The previous record was 14 consecutive days back in 2018 during the camp fire. You can feel it in your throat. And then in the morning when i went in the morning to the car, you can see it on the windshield really, really bad. Its really bad out here. Reporter what are you going to do to stay healthy . For right now we still have to work so we have to wear some masks, some glasses and see what we can do. You can feel it in the air. You can feel the sore throat, nose gets stuffy and clogged up. Its definitely out there. Hopefully itll go away soon. Reporter from my point of view even though you can see the smoke, i cant smell it. I mightve smelled it a little bit earlier this morning, but standing on top of this hill in dublin im not smelling it right now. The air Quality Management district is recommending to limit your Time Outdoors today. If youre going to morning, bese to do it before those ozone levels start to really kick up. Nbc bay area news. Some good advice there, bob. Thank you. I want you to take a look at this. This is the san mateo bridge. And you can see the lights are still on. Here we are at 11 00 and the midday and you see the lights are still on because its so dark out there from all the clouds and the hue there. Meanwhile, thousands of pg e customers in napa and sonoma counties, they are waiting for their power to be restored, this is following that mandatory shutoff. The issue, now the weather. Nbc bay areas Cierra Johnson, shes in downtown calistoga just to explain how the weather could impact the electricity as its turned back off for thousands of those homes north of those areas that are affected. Reporter good morning. Yes, weve been in contact with pg e all morning, and they have confirmed theyre taking those initial steps to bring nearly 23,000 customers back online. But theyre warning there could be a delay in that restoration because of the weather. Hazy smokefilled morning. So theyre warning that those helicopters may not be able to safely inspect those lines. If crews are able to get up and begin the inspection, it will take 3,000 pg e workers to inspect nearly 11,000 miles of transmission and distribution powerlines. The concern now the hazy conditions. As thousands of acres burn across the bay combined with fog in some areas, visibility is the main concern. And businesses and homes are using generators to resume everyday life. For them its now a waiting game. Its really scary. I mean, even driving in yesterday, the winds were so high its scary to think that with a mixture of, you know, really strong winds and the fires going on and helicopters not being able to fly, its really going to put a damper on things for the firefighters. Reporter there could also be delays if theres any damage to those fire lines once pg e is able to inspect. When theyre able to do that we will be sure to pass that information along to you. Were in downtown calistoga, Cierra Johnson for nbc bay area news. Thank you. We have been posting all about the smoke and haze on our social media accounts. I want you to check out the video that we posted on instagram. You can follow us for those updates in your news feed. Now the bear fire north of sacramento exploding and more than tripling in size overnight. This is because of what the u. S. Forest Service Calls unprecedented fire behavior. Nbc bay areas kris sanchez is joining us live now from san jose with how that fire really gave some evacuees almost no time to get to safety, kris. Reporter this is really unbelievable. And you heard both kari and bob saying that the smoke from the bear fire is contributing to our air quality. Its no wonder why there was such a dramatic change this morning, because, as you said, it just exploded in size overnight. We have new video that confirms that homes have been lost to bear fire that is burning near oroville. In the video you can see firefighters trying to hose down what they can, working in neardark conditions even though this happened right after sunrise. The video here. Some evacuees had to drive through flames just to get out. And one evacuee told us that after ditching his car and sheltering in a metal shop, he thought this was the end for him. I thought i was going to die. If not from the fire, from the smoke inhalation. It was so fast, it sounded like a jet plane. And there was fire 360 degrees around me. I actually have pictures. It was incredible, unbelievable. I cant believe i made it out. Reporter you can just hear that in his voice. Other new video we got this morning, you can see homes strochl destroyed in the area. Vista point and spreading the fire along highway 162, the oro quincy highway. Cal fire firefighters are on the fire lines. But because this is federal land, the u. S. Forestry department is taking the lead. We did a time lapse from a pg e camera to show you just how that fire grew over 12 hours time. Listen to this. It grew a thousand acres every half hour. More than tripling in size. It is now 150,000 acres as of this morning we know that its bigger than that now. The u. S. Forest service said that the fire behavior is unprecedented because of the high winds, because of the terrain there, because of the dry conditions. And kari is tracking winds that are not going to make things any easier for those firefighters fighting the bear fire near oroville today. Nbc bay area news. All right, kris, thank you. Now here in the bay area, crews continue to make progress on the fire lines. The lnu complex fire in the north bay now 92 contained. The scu complex fire 95 contained. Containment on the czu complex fire, this is along the coast, stands at 83 . The woodward fire burning at point reyes, 95 contained. Switching gears now for you because a new reporting published by the Washington Post says trump was aware very early. He told the reporter bob woodward that he was deliberately playing down the danger of the virus to the american people. Reporter right. Trump says it out loud. Recording at the time. Now, we are still working with the Washington Post to see if we can get permission to play you the audio. But all you have to do is go to washingtonpost. Com and you can hear it for yourself. In early february, long before the shutdowns, trump tells woodward, quote, its more deadly than the flu. This is deadly stuff. But trump was saying the opposite publicly. Trump then tells woodward on march 19th, quote, it turns out its not just old people, its young people, and later, i always want to play it down. I still like playing it down because i dont want to create a panic. Now, other news about the president this morning has to do with rape allegations against him. Weve known about these for quite some time. Newspaper columnist e. Jean carroll had accused trump of raping her back in the 90s. Trump denied the rape in the hill newspaper saying, quote, ill say it with great respect, number one, shes not my type. Number two, it never happened. Totally lying. I dont know anything about her. Now its that accusation about lying that landed the president back in court, the target of a defamation suit. And the Justice Department has determined that because the president made that accusation while he was president , it should be the u. S. Government and the u. S. Taxpayer who defend the president against the defamation claims in court, not the president s personal lawyers. Its an extremely unusual move by the Justice Department. Now bill barr, the doj is going to be on nightly news tonight, nbc news chief justice correspondent Pete Williams will interview the attorney general. That of course comes, marcus, this afternoon. Its 6 30 right after the 6 00 p. M. News on nbc bay area. Well certainly be watching that, scott. Of course, that orange red hue that were seeing across the bay area, meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that. I had a friend, she says is this just happening in the east bay, or is this all over the bay area . And i said, yes, all over the bay area right now. All over the bay area. And its really crazy to see, isnt it . I mean, just looking out the window and were seeing an orangelooking sky. Its so dark inside the house. And, yes, were approaching noon and we cant even tell it. So were seeing very dark conditions in some spots. Youre having to keep those headlights on and were seeing the street lights on. But then when you look at the ground level if youre like me youre also checking those air sensors. And this is on airnow. Com from the bay area air Quality Management district showing that the air is only slightly unhealthy for those of us who have breathing about problems, those sensitive groups. Were looking at numbers that are not off the charts here despite what were seeing overhead. That fire really exploded yesterday over just to the east of oroville. And so we saw those big py pyrocumulus clouds. This can travel hundreds of miles away from the actual fire. As it does so, it drifts up higher in the atmosphere as it moves away. And then we are also looking at those clouds that can shoot up into the sky and punch through some of those more stable levels of the atmosphere and can go up as high as 20,000 feet. And so it also generates its own weather. Now what were seeing in terms of our wind speeds, its light and variable. Our winds are starting to calm down. We dont have those strong in. Herly winds like we did look at these temperatures right now. Were still in the 60s and we compare that to all of that heat that we had the past couple of days. And in some spots, wow, look at that compared to yesterday we are 21 degrees cooler than we were yesterday at this time. So the computer models really have a hard time handling this. That smoke can actually keep our temperatures cooler. But it looks like in spots like cupertino, we are going to be in the low 80s this afternoon. Im actually not sure if well be that warm. Lets take a look at whats happening here because if you have friends in the Rocky Mountains they had all of that snow. Thats that same storm system thats giving us that strong offshore wind. Thats going to move away. But we will gradually transition to some cooler temperatures by the weekend, and at this point we so need it. Hopefully we also get some improvements in our air quality with more of a westerly wind kicking in. So as we look at our temperatures for the inland areas this weekend, how about some mid80s . And for San Francisco well come back to the 60s. But its all about the air quality and that smoke right now. Marcus . All right, kari, thank you.
