Our blood banks are in desperate need. Reporter while americans struggle to go ahead covid19 under control, the country is facing another medical emergency a couple of evenings ago i received a call from a gentleman from the red cross who informed me that there was a blood shortage. Reporter he is a long time blood donor. He says he was surprised to here just how urgently the red across needs donations right now, especially for his blood type, a positive. He informed me as soon as i donate and the blood is cleared and tested it could be going to someone of need within 24 hours. Which really just alarmed me. Reporter a spokesperson for the American Red Cross tells us it takes two to three days from the time of donation for the blood, platelets or plasma to be processed, tested and to be made available to hospitals. Were going to clarify the new rules that you have to follow if you plan on heading to ski this winter, especially lake tahoe. Its down to the wire, the teams been working around the clock. Weve had to rethink our whole approach. Were going to give togetherness. Logistically, its been a nightmare. Im not sure its going to work. Itll work. I didnt know you were listening. Well, this could all be very confusing the different guidelines and rules from different agencies and counties. And now the rollout of a vaccine. Our covid doctor from ucsf sat down to discuss it all in his own words. Im really excited that the uk has led the western world in approving a covid vaccine. It caught the u. S. By surprise because a lot of it is u. S. Data at but nevertheless. The uk has bore a large brunt of the covid19 disease and death in europe in general. Im hopeful the vaccines will imminent. One of my colleagues asked me when i expected to get the vaccine in my arm. Can you give me a date . I said december 17th, which is one week after we expect the fda to give authorization on december 10th. So that tangible date is really exciting. Its inevitable, and the writing is on the wall that were going to face increased restrictions. I dont think well get back to the really tough restrictions of march, but there will be more than what were doing right now. I think people are really skeptical that curfew would work. Because for example in San Francisco we never did anything after 10 00 p. M. Any way. And whatever is on right now restrr restrictions doesnt seem to be working. So leaders are probably pressing on the emergency brake even harder, and thats whats going to happen. So on the ground here in the hospital, i continue to be, like, extremely nervous, worried, anxious. I was asked every time im coming back, covid is going up. Right now were not just in the regular hospital. Theyre also in the icu. So the idea that most people are not as sick anymore is not really true when you see it from a hospital level. So im worried about that capacity. Im worry about ventilator capacity. Weve stockpiled ppe, weve stockpiled remdesivir, but what we cant stockpile on is personnel and staff. So as covid becomes more widespread, our staff lives in the communities, so they may get covid as well. We hope not, but that would limit tremendously our ability to take care of patients. When i look at these numbers of a surge on top of a surge, i feel very nervous. I feel sad. I have a mix of emotions. But most of all, i feel tired. I feel demoralized. I know i already talked about it being a marathon, but it really feels like a marathon. Feels like im on the last mile of the marathon and i really cant run anymore because i dont have enough water and i ran out of water. But i think were all rallying still at the hospital level and i know we can do it. The vaccine is that Silver Lining were running towards. I think a lot of people are frankly tired. We couldnt see our families during thanksgiving. We couldnt get that boost, and were just trying the best we could. Real great honesty from doctor peter. Well hear from, including his thoughts on people traveling during the holidays and how it relates to a triple scoop of ice cream. So grateful for our front line healthcare workers. Dr. Fauci insist we could be back to normal by late summer or fall, but only if people get the vaccine and continue to practice social distancing. When the fda approves a vaccine based on the process that i just mentioned, i, when my turn comes up, will definitely get vaccinated and i will recommend to my family that they get vaccinated.
