He informed me as soon as i donate and the blood is cleared and tested it could be going to someone of need within 24 hours. Which really just alarmed me. Reporter a spokesperson for the American Red Cross tells us it takes two to three days from the time of donation for the blood, platelets or plasma to be processed, tested and to be made available to hospitals. But the organization and other major Blood Centers in the country have reported a huge drop in Blood Donations during the pandemic. Covid19 and natural disasters like wildfires in california have forced them to cancel blood drives. Now the red cross is also asking people for a different kind of Blood Donation. They need people who have been infected but have recovered from covid19. The organization explains convalescent plasma is a type of Blood Donation collected from covid19 survivors that have antibodies that may help patients who are actively fighting the virus. You should feel extremely safe going into an American Red Cross facility. Right now were not just in the regular hospital. Theyre also in the icu. So the idea that most people are not as sick anymore is not really true when you see it from a hospital level. So im worried about that capacity. Im worry about ventilator capacity. Weve stockpiled ppe, weve stockpiled remdesivir, but what we cant stockpile on is personnel and staff. So as covid becomes more widespread, our staff lives in the communities, so they may get covid as well. We hope not, but that would limit tremendously our ability to take care of patients. When i look at these numbers of a surge on top of a surge, i feel very nervous. I feel sad. I have a mix of emotions. But most of all, i feel tired. I feel demoralized. I know i already talked about it being a marathon, but it really feels like a marathon. Feels like im on the last mile of the marathon and i really cant run anymore because i dont have enough water and i ran out of water. But i think were all rallying still at the hospital level and i know we can do it. The vaccine is that Silver Lining were running towards. I think a lot of people are frankly tired.
