There is help for women suffering from postpartum depression. For the first time, the fda approved a pill that could help. Marissa thompson has more. Reporter after the difficult birth and hospitalization of her first daughter, she said she suffered postpartum depression. I told my husband i didnt want to live any more. I really believed he and my daughter would be better off. Reporter it happened to rosa phillifter the birth ofer cond child. I felt standoffish and sad and crying and most people w y depression. Reporter b women diagnosed with postpartum depression. Symptoms include crying more than usual. Feeling numb or disconnected from tab and worrying you will hurt your baby. This morning, the fda approving a drug which is a fast acting pill taken once a day for 14 days. Rosa phillips was part of the clinical trial. I was able to go back to my normal self and enjoy my family. Reporter the manufacturing says zurzuvae is responsible for it is working in as little as. Three days. It is so important we have treatments that can act quickly and current antidepressant therapy can take weeks to months to work. Reporter news of zurzuvae is a great help for some. For suffering moms and families, time matters. Anne thompson, nbc news. Thanks to anne for that report. We want to bring in dr. Natalie azar. Thank you for joining us. How big of a breakthrough is this . You heard how terrifying post partum depression is for those moms. Absolutely, kristen. In this instance, i think that is what we can absolutely say here. Postpartum depression is a serious and sometimes life threatening medical condition and as anne pointed out in the piece, traditional anti antidepresss take weeks. There was a sister drug approved years ago, but it is only available through infusion a doctors fice. Women being able to take a pill at home that is safe and effective will change the landscape. You arffering fr can you tell nditionst w taking dication . Absolutely. Ink im cerly speg about myself and probably speaking to thousands of women who have been through postpartum depression. The baby blues are common a few weeks after child birth. It is normal to feel a little down or anxious about being a new mother, for example. Postpartum depression is different. Symptoms that linger and can happen any time in the first year after child birth and also start happening in the later stages of pregnancy. Peter, the symptoms are the same as runofthe mill depression, but what makes postpm unique is when theother is unable to care for the child orughts of hurting herself or her child. That is the severe category and notmoderate. It can be a medical emergency. Dr. Azar, it is not for everyone who might be breast feeding. Why is that . Joe, the short answer is for mildtomoderate depression, traditional treatments and interventions are still appropriate. That would include psychotherap an aantidepressmedication. Some women who are have suicidal thoughts or thoughts of hurting their child which becomes an emergency. Today, there is not enough evidence to support safety in breast feeding. Women on the twoweek course of treatment are advised to use contraception during that time and for at least a week after stopping the medicine as it can cause fetal harm. Dr. Azar, before we let you go, do you expect this to be covered by insurance . Thats always the difficult thing. I mentioned other medications that are available by iv has a really, really high ticket price. Any time something is fda approved, you know, it certainly facilitates that process of approval. You know, we dont know what the price tag of this is going to be. I wouldnt be surprised if some Insurance Companies require women potentially tried and failed antidepressants. The rapid onset of action of women who need it, im hoping, Insurance Companies will fall in line and approve it for them. Dr. Azar, thank you so much. I appreciate it. An important topic and people openly talking about it. Now we turn and check in with joe and popstart. With joe and popstart. Actors joined the picket line in the separate strike which will threaten the upcoming season. Some may be able to weather r t strike thanks to the international capabilities. I spoke to one on the picket line as to how he is feeling as negotiations resume. You know, i think the attitude is cautious optimism. Eventually we will reach a deal with the studios because strikes end. There are a lot of core issues which are the reasons why we are striking that the studios simply refuse to engage with us on prior to may 1st. Last nights meeting ended with no sign of progress according to variety, the Writers Guild will not bend on Staffing Levels and especially episode tv. They gave no indication they are prepared to change their position. It is important to note Nbc Universal is part of the amptp which represents studios in negotiations. Peter and kristen. Fascinating to hear from the writer who has optimism. Dana, thank you. Joe is here gain with the good time morning boost. You love bath time . Yes. Especially if it is a bubble bath. What kids may enjoy more is watching a bear splash around in the bath. Kids visiting the knoxville zoo were delighted to see the 10yearold black bear take a plunge and loving it in the bubbles. She looks amazing. Its inspiring. Reporter fellow jgymnasts i awe after her hiatus it began in 2021 at the olympics. Simone biles is out of the competition. Reporter biles blaming it on the twisties i didnt want to do something and get injured. Reporter with seven olympic medals and 25 World Championship medals under her belt, biles sidelined herself from all competition to focus on her Mental Health. Her spotlight shifting to berm benchmarks, including being named times 2021 athlete of the year last year receiving the president ial medal of freedom and in april marrying nfl star jon Jonathan Owens biles joking with reporters but shying away from interviews. She spoke off camera. She said shes ready, excited to be back her coaches said shes in great physical shape but limiting the amount of twists shes doing her routine while keeping difficulty at a high level. Reporter doableable with biles talent she aidds. The young girls bought tickets to watch her warm up yesterday everybody as we said amazed by biles skill but another consensus we heard, a lot of athletes saying that someone of that stature, skill level taking a break to focus on Mental Health gives them permission to do the same and take care of themselves in a more holistic way. Biles will compete in all four events, beams, bars, vault, and floor. This is a qualifying event for nationals, a key event on the road to next years paris olympic games. Exciting stuff back to you. I agree youre as impressed by her moves as you are by her message. The difference she made in the Mental Health community so everybody can feel comfortable with that. The point that maggie makes at the end is the key point, so many young women and men had the permission to say i want to focus on my Mental Health. And shes coming back on her own return. Well look at the history and y thisoy hecome more than just makebelieve. This is nbc nighnews edition. Welcome back to nbc nightly news kids edition. Its great to be with you on a saturday morning we have a super fun lineup ahead, including a visit to this zoo in ohio where zookeepers got a big surprise. Plus, some areas are cooling off and others are experiencing wicked high temperatures have you ever wondered why water is so essential . Our pal dr. John torres explains. Reporter water is essential for nearly every living thing on earth, including people. But why . For us humans, many of the jobs our body does need water in fact, every single cell in the body needs water to work it helps with Movement Like cushioning the joints and tissues, plays a big role in making saliva and digesting food and assists awith regulating boy temperature. How much water does a person need that depends on a few factors, like age, the temperature and what activities someone is doing. The common benchmark for water is eight glasses a day, but we get water from a variety of sources, of course, from drinking it, but also through food fruits and vegetables have a lot of water, so does yogurt and soup and my favorite, popsicles. If its hot outside or youre doing physical activity, youll need more water because your body sweats, which is working to cool down. Sweating uses a lot of water not having enough water can cause dehydration. Thats when your body doesnt have the amount of water it needs to carry out normal functions. Symptoms include thirst, dizziness and fatigue. Most of the time dehydration can be reversed by Drinking Water and resting. In more severe cases, you may need to go to the doctor dont wait until youre super thirsty to start Drinking Water. You should drink it throughout the day. Hydrating is not just for the summer its important to drink water all year round well, dr. John, ill drink to that thank you very much. The heat wave this summer is also having an impact on an important part of our ecosystem, floridas coral reef our friend Kristen Dahlgren is here to explain what exactly is a coral reef. Reporter they are beautiful, dynamic and vital to human life. A coral reef is actually one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth. Its made out of a hundred to a thousand corals living together. They actually support over a quarter of all marine life underwater. Reporter they might look like rocks, but coral are actually living animals. The coral animal creates its own hard outer skeleton to protect its soft squishy body inside reporter corals are actually some of the oldest animals on earth, even older than the dinosaurs. Coral reefs are super sized communities of these creatures, all living together. They support the lives of other animals. How . Think of a coral reef like a big Apartment Building for all types of sea life. Small fish, big fish, crabs or when animals want to hide from predators, they have a place to go and hide, or animals can lay their eggs when you snorkel on a reef and look at the corals, where you see corals, youll most likely see vibrant, diverse, beautiful fish swimming and living throughout the coral reef. Reporter australias Great Barrier reef is the largest coral reef in the world. Number two is a reef in the Caribbean Sea called the meso american reef. The third biggest is right here at home, off the coast of florida. Its 360 miles long, almost exactly as how long the state of new york is. This directly supports marine life, but also peoples livelihoods. Reporter coral reefs are resilient and adaptable, but the recent heat wave is impacting their ability to survive water temperatures in florida this summer hit over 100 degrees, as hot as a jacuzzi sa Ocean Temperatures are putting stress on the coral, sparking widespread bleaching, which is when the coral loses its color and gets very sick. Humans normal temperature is 98 degrees when youre healthy how do you feel if your temperature is raised by two degrees and you have a fever of 100 or 102 you dont feel very good, right . This is whats happening similar to our corals. The water temperature is raising by multiple degrees and they have socalled a fever they cannot tolerate that stress, so theyre dying at a very quick rate. Reporter marine scientists are worried. Teams like the Coral Restoration Foundation are bringing coral out of the ocean and into aquariums on land to protect them from the heat with the help of noaa theyre built a special bus to keep the coral safe on the drive from the ocean to the aquarium. The goal is to keep the coral happy and healthy until the waters cool down. The goal is to return them back to the underwater nurseries. Reporter there are some things you can do to help protect coral reefs, like using reefsafe sunscreen, no matter where you live why . Because all waterways are connected. You can also recycle and keep trash out of the oceans and waterways. And be careful when swimming around coral reefs. They are animals. They are very fragile ecosystems dont touch them or pick them up, because theyre important in doing humans a service as well. Reporter one of the most important things to remember about coral is that they are living beings, just like us. Not only do they help support life of Sea Creatures and fish, but also theyre connected to us as well. They help protect us from strong storms and they help provide us food its really important to protect the corals if youre a moon lover, the month of august is for you just a few days ago, the first of two socalled super moons illuminated the night sky as the moon neared its closest point to earth. The next super moon will occur later this month it got us thinking, just what is the moon all about the moon has captivated, fascinated and inspired us. Im going to step off now. Reporter in 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong and buzz aldrin became the first humans to land on the moon. One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. Reporter what we call the moon is actually just one of over 200 moons in our solar system the earths moon is the fifth largest moon orbiting planets in our solar system with a radius of approximately 1,080 miles according to nasa, if earth were the size of a nickel, the moon would be about as big as a coffee bean. The only natural satellite is simple called the moon because people didnt know other moons existed until galileo discovered other moons. It travels over 2,000 Miles Per Hour the only thing in the sky thats brighter than the moon is the sun. One of our viewers wanted to learn more about the difference between the two. Hello on memorial day, you talked about the sun. I want to know about the moon. How is it different from the sun . And if it is required for people on earth to live thank you. Please take care of yourself and each other goodbye now reporter we asked our friend former astronaut Mike Massimino to explain. The sun is a star just like when you look up in the night and its a star. Its much closer than the other stars. Thats why its big and bright and gives us energy. All of our solar system ound the sun the sun is mainlde of heliand hn the moon is much diffe scientists believe the moon was formed when a big object the size of a planet crashed into earth billions of years ago and shot up lots of rocks and material into space. That combined to form the moon so the moon is kind of like a big rock and it orbits around our planet earth, much different than the sun, but still very important to us. So if we didnt have the moon, life would be much different here on earth, nbecause it affects our planet, particularly our oceans that, of course, affects the way that we live here on earth reporter while the moon appears to glow in the night, it actually doesnt generate any light on its own in fact, it reflects light from the sun to illuminate the night sky. As it travels around the earth, different parts of the moon are lit up by the sun. Thats why some nights it can look like a complete circle which is called a full moon and other nights all you see is a tiny sliver, which we call a crescent moon. On nights when it looks like the moon has disappeared, its actually just hiding from the suns rays this is what we call a new moon. It means a new moon cycle is about to start so the next time youre outside after dark, keep an eye out fora companion in thear syste ryan, thanks for submitting thatat question. Kiove yourstions, so keep them coming. Time for pop quiz now. The subject, geography the question, which state is known as the ocean state is it california, florida or rhode island ill give you a few seconds to think about it times up the answer is rhode island Rhode Islands official nickname is the ocean state the states shoreline runs 400 miles. Lets head to ohio, where a recentnt gorilla birth took zoo k zookeepers by surprise reporter it was a normal day at the columbus zoo and aquarium until something unexpected happened at the gorilla exhibit. They came out and said shes having a baby. Reporter births are usually not a surprise, but this one was. Why . Because zookeepers thought it was a boy. Did you know boy and girl gorillas are hard to tell about apart until. If moms taking really great care of them, we try to be respectful of the bond theyre forming and respect their space. Reporter sully and her baby girl are both doing great. Theyre being cared for by zookeep ers and other gorillas i the group. A surprise birth leading to a beautiful display of nature. Now lets turn to our inspiring kids series. This week we introduce you to kids racing to the finish line and learning so much more. We get more from our pal dave price. Reporter these kids feel the need for speed you can get up to 35 miles an hour its pretty fun. Theres a lot of crowds, a lot of excitement. I race down the hill and i like going fast. Reporter welcome to the soapbox derby. Its a downhill racing event. You get a car thats like about this big you go down a hill with a helmet and a brake. Theres no gas pedal. Reporter 11yearold miles is competing in his first soapbox derby World Championship. A few days before the World Championship, i think its pretty fun. Reporter did you know the soapbox derby started in ohio in the 1930s after a journalist saw some boys racing down a hill in homemade cars and it gave him an idea. Baby buggy wheels, crates they made into bodies of the car. He thought that was kind of fun. The final heat sees a patchedup car that crashed in the first heat come through the winner the driver is 11yearold joe of thomasville, georgia. The soapbox derby name came from the fact that in the 30s soap was sold in crates. Some of the cars were built from soapboxes. Reporter the rest, as they say, is history. More than 300 young people from across the u. S. And around the world just competed in the 85th annual competition. We have three gdivisions in the competition, stock, which is for the novice 713yearold kids then 918 in the super stock the masters is 10 to 20. The dimension of the cars are all the same its pretty fun to build. Reporter and building is definitely a Family Affair just ask miles dad. I just make sure everything is tight and that the steering is in a way that miles likes it. He really loves cars and he loves racing and building and engineering. Reporter kids can customize their cars with their own colors and designs. Dasha driscoll has been racing for three years. Its exciting and fun. Reporter the 12yearold was adopted from ukraine and has tricked out her stock car in support of her home country. The two colors of the ukrainian flag is yellow and blue and the girl is a ukrainian girl she loves the dove the dove means sign of peace this is a trident of ukraine. Reporter when it comes ss to competing, what are the secrets of success pick out your wheels. They are very important. You have to stay straight as much as possible on this course and dont turn too much. Youve got to stay focused if you want to go faster. Youve got to stay still in the car. For new people, it may be scary, but when you get used to it, you should have lots of fun. Reporter no matter whether you win or lose, the soapbox derby is giving kids a chance to have fun, learn a few new things and put their skills to the test. I think you learn a lot of patience and going over challenges i say some problem solving skills as well theres a lot of aspects that i think you gain through this sport. The most important part for me is the people that you meet here, the excitement of going down the hill, the time with your family. Reporter its all downhill from here. So much fun dave, thank you. Finally, lets turn to the world of makebelieve. Pink seems to be the color of the summer many kids and grownups are heading to the theaters to see barbie. How did this iconic doll become such a big part of american pop culture . Drew hubbard takes a look. Its one of the mustsee movies of summer for kids and grownups pink for barbie. Barbie is having her moment on the big screen. Hi, barbie hi, ken barbie has been around for a long, long time. The number one barbie doll is the first doll produced by mattell. Barbie was created nearly 65 years ago by mattell at that time she saw her daughter barbara playing with paper dolls and imagining herself as a teenage woman and doing interesting things and being independent and trying on different careers. She realized there wasnt a real toy play experience that allowed girls to do that. Reporter named after ruths daughter barbara, barbies full name is barbara roberts. The doll was first introduced in 1959 prior to that, the only dolls were baby dolls. This was a whole new category. Reporter barbie was the original fashion doll. This is the superstar barbie. Reporter meet carol spencer. She knows a thing or two about barbie. This is my first doll that actually came out. That was color magic barbie doll i changed the color on her hair. Reporter she designed the mini icons wardrobe for more than 30 years. Her fashion was slip on, wrap, snap and tie i grew to love designing for that little doll, because i could do real fashion in miniature, and i really kept up with the time. So i had lots of fun doing everything that was trendy all through those years. Believe me, that was fun but she became my muse, the little gal whos sitting on my shoulder shes like a friend. Reporter carol designed everything from swimwear to dresses to pantsuits and more. I love poodle dogs, so this fashion got a poodle dog i made it out of pipe cleaners and pompoms. Reporter among her favorite designs . This is my favorite that is the first doll that bore my name as designer on the box. Reporter in addition to keeping up with fashion, barbie also had a lot of different jobs reporter the doll has grown and evolved over the years, and her body type has changed too. Several years ago, critics argued the doll presented an unrealistic message about girls. So after listening to consumers, a new generation of barbie dolls were born. We knew it was an important opportunity to connect with kids in their formative years and set positive examples. We started on the journey almost ten years ago to think differently about and revolutionize her body to make it more diverse and introduce more skin tones and ethnicities, introduce dolls with physical disabilities and to help kids see themselves in this product line, but also to have empathy for others through our product. Reporter the doll line is diverse. Theres well over 175 types of dolls in the collection. One of the newest dolls this year, the first barbie with down syndrome this is more like me, because it has the same condition. Its a skin condition where your skin starts to turn white. Like i have some on my hands and her hands also has some. So i was like, thats cool. Reporter regardless of your age, if you are a barbie fan like me, the movie is reminding us about a toy that becomes more than just makebelieve. It doesnt matter girls can do anything. Thats really awesome reporter im drew hubbard. Back to you lester.
