Starting out nice and cool around the bay area, but we will see temperatures that warming up over the next few hours. The heat advisory begins at 11 00 this morning, and some of the areas were under the heat advisory yesterday. This goes until 11 00 p. M. , and our inland areas are headed for the upper 80s and low 90s. Watch out for the potential for setting new records today, with santa rosa expected to hit 95 degrees today, and thats the record high set back just a couple years ago, or just last year. In San Francisco, were expecting to reach 90 degrees today. That would break a record that was set in 1913. In oakland as well as livermore, san jose will reach in the low 90s which would be a new record high temperature. Lets get a look at all of our microclimates and what to expect with temperatures hitting 99 in gilroy today. Hot temperatures in the south county, and antioch reaching 97 degrees, and 92 in oakland and 92 in san mateo. San francisco once again headed for 90 degrees downtown with mid to upper 90s for much of the north bay. Lets head to kris sanchez live in san jose. You have tips to stay cool and stay safe. Your forecast sounds like the middle of summer, kari. You have to love the bank sign when the temperatures spike, and this is the First Republic on alameda, and according to the sign its 61 degrees out here right now, and thats what i would like for october to feel like in the daytime hours. Not just in San Francisco and in oakland, but around the bay for the rest of the week, the south bay will feel like summer, and temperatures in oakland and San Francisco, again, could break records. The folks might be cranky because its uncomfortable for sleeping. The high temperatures at night could meet the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke today. If you or somebody stops sweating and the skin looks dry, hot and red, thats not a good sign. If the pupils are virtually closed, thats no good. These are the signs of heat stroke. Very serious. Go to the hospital. If you are rather, the next few days you will need to stay inside the airconditioning, and if you have it, or go to a cooling center. Avoid direct sunshine and take a cool shower or bath, and drink before you are thirsty. Wear breathable lightcolored clothing. Be aware that ocean conditions are expected to be dangerous with a large swell and sneaker waves expected so dont turn your back on the ocean. Make sure you keep the kids and the pets away from the waterside. No need to rethink your halloween costume, and the heat is not going to last until october 31st, just the weekend. Good to know. Happening today, sfpd holding a town hall to answer the questions about a deadly shooting at a chinese consulate. Ten days ago investigators say a 31yearold man crashed his car into the consulate. Authorities later said he was holding a knife and got into a scuffle with guards as officers arrived to the scene and thats when officers used lethal force. That town hall is scheduled for 3 00 p. M. A popular earthquake app making a lot of news this week is issuing a new apology this morning. Perhaps you have that shake alert myshake app. Yesterday it alerted people and hosted a higher magnitude. At 3 19, the app sent out an alert, and it was supposed to go on the 10 19 this morning, but the alert was tagged universal time. Needless to say some of the people that received that alert was woken up out of the blue. They have issued an apology and are looking into why that test went out. We do also at times have unhealthy air quality as a result of not much mixing going on. We will have unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups, and anybody with any kind of breathing problems or heart conditions should limit time outside, especially later on this afternoon, in the east bay as well as Santa Clara Valley where we typically see higher amounts of pollutants get trapped. We are looking at temperatures reaching in the mid and upper 90s across the bay area, and then tomorrow highs will drop in the low 80s and more cooling in saturdays forecast. Look at that. We will all be in the 70s. Its going to be really nice. We will talk about the weekend ahead. Mike, you have two incidents for the bay bridge. Yeah, we do, kari, and both of them are not affecting the traffic flow anymore. You still see the headlights moving smoothly without interruption, so that issue in the tunnel eastbound 80 at Treasure Island looks clear from the roadway. Getting on to the freeway at San Francisco we do have an onramp there at 9th that had a crash there and looks like everything is cleared. We have slowing for highway 4. Look at that building up around 242, and thats unusual. This one as you approach railroad avenue is sticking around because of a late pickup for construction work. We have to make it through today as the heat spikes and lasts until 11 00 this evening with the heat advisory for all the areas shaded in orange. Its going to be a hot day, and we are headed for a cooler weekend. We also have some dangerous waves near the coastline for people who are trying to get to the ocean to cool off and enjoy the warmer weather. Keep in mind the water temperature is right now only at 58 degrees, and 59 off the coast of half moon bay. We are seeing waves at nine to 11 feet and could get as high as 17 to 22 feet. Those waves come up and they kind of sneak up on you, so you dont want to turn your back to the water and make sure you are always paying attention and be safe near the coastline. Some of the inland areas are going to be really hot today. Take a look at gilroy headed for 99 degrees this afternoon, and san jose reaching 93 degrees. 93 in fremont and 96 in walnut creek. We are also going to be in the low 90s for daly city and half moon bay. San francisco upper 80s and low 90s. For the north bay reaching 93 in napa, and 97 in ukiah. This is hurricane norma growing in strength in the overnight hours. Yesterday at this time it was a tropical storm. We are expecting this to make its way closer to cabo over the next few days. As it weakens it will make landfall at a tropical storm, but that could affect a lot of peoples weekend plans. We are going to have a significant cooldown. We are going from 97 today to 85 tomorrow. 75 on saturday, and then a chance of showers late sunday into early monday. San francisco will also be hot today reaching into the upper 80s, but much cooler tomorrow with a high of 74. We will bring it back to the 60s for the weekend. Mike, you are seeing something going on on the roads . Yeah, concerned about highway 4, Contra Costa County. The bridge is no problem, but highway 4 shows slowing coming over towards 242. Thats early for that much slowing. It could be because theres a burst of traffic as the overnight work cleared, but in this area chp did get reports of a wrongway driver, and its always alarming and so far it looks like theres recovery into pittsburg, and we will see how that sorts itself out. The heat advisory starts at 11 00 a. M. And continues through 11 00 p. M. We will go from highs in the 90s to highs in the 70s and 80s. Some of us could see rain by the end of the weekend. Look at the highs for the weekend. Up to 99 in san martin. 92 in hayward and san mateo. Hitting 95 in santa rosa. Tomorrow we start to see the numbers coming down by at least ten degrees for many of the microclimates. In San Francisco it could drop almost 20 degrees, so we will have a significant cooldown happening very fast as we see the return of our ocean breeze and natural airconditioning. The number of confirmed deaths on both sides of the conflict now surpass 5,000. Today is the great california shakeout, and schools and offices and agencies are participating in todays test and its an actual test, and it comes a day after a 4. 1 magnitude quake hits the city near sacramento county. And many felt the earthquake, and it happened 25 miles northeast of brentwood but caused shaking on some of the docks in rio vista and even the backups on the rio vista bridge. The earthquake measured 4. 1, but people received word of a 5. 7 magnitude earthquake on their phones and thats was the alert we were talking about concerning the 5. 2 magnitude earthquake, but off the mark. It appears to be a much bigger earthquake. Reporter now, if you are riding bart today there will be a brief stop at 10 19, and thats part of the great california shakeout. We mentioned, schools, agencies and officers are going to take part in the drill to get us prepared for what really will happen when a big earthquake hits. You may remember this, back in june when two cars were in that a milelong shootout near pier 39. Two people in the cars as well as bystanders were injured. Police arrested one man and they will give more information at the press conference scheduled for 10 00. Police are about to increase their efforts to crackdown on car breakins. The surge is tied to thieves using a tool to quickly and easily shatter car windows. At the time they promised to start placing undercover officers in high crime areas to try and catch more thieves in the act. Later today the department will unveil a new pilot program. Maybe you are headed to Sonoma Valley to enjoy the outdoors this weekend. Look at sunday. We are in the upper 60s, cloudy with a chance of rain. If you are going to the sierra this weekend, expect to enjoy beautiful fall colors. I loved that last weekend. I got great pictures. We will go from the low 70s to a big cooldown. The popular app snapchat being named in a new lawsuit. The suit claims the app did nothing to prevent the selling and distribution of drugs containing fentanyl. Dozens of parents are involved all believing their kids died too soon because of the drugs they did not know was laced with the opioid. Investigators later determined the counterfeit pills were loaded with fentanyl. Its not just about daniel. The snapchat app is facilitating and allowing drug dealers to sell elicit counterfeit drugs to our children. The complaint also claims snapchat hinders Law Enforcement from gathering evidence. Snapchat denies that and says it preserves the data and cooperates with Law Enforcement. Happening today, one south Bay Fire Department is taking a critical step in building its new firehouse. The High Pressure is pushing everything down and not allowing for a lot of mixing with the light wind. We will see temperatures today heading for 95 in livermore today. 95 in santa rosa. Even San Francisco will reach into the low 90s. We may see records set across many of the microclimates today. And then look at the cooling we will see tomorrow, headed back to some very mild temperatures. Even cooler on saturday as we enjoy our weekend. We are going to get much more comfortable air. We have High Pressure building now, but several storm systems will move in as we go throughout the weekend, and a slight chance of rain on sunday. Theres a huge change here in our temperatures. We are going from 97 inland today to 85 tomorrow, and then mid70s for the weekend. Early next week we will continue with those mid70s after a slight chance of rain. San francisco hitting 90 today, but it does cool off quite a bit tonight as we go back to the mid50s. We will see highs in the mid60s for the weekend.
