A second sea lion attack in 24 hours has Public Safety officials on high alert. Thanks for joining us. The National Park service has closed aquatic park to swillers. Both attacks happened not far from Fishermans Wharf and pier 39 where the iconic sea lions live. This is a sight of a second sea lion attack. One that sent a man to the hospital. He is said to be in fair condition. You can tell from these dangerous signs that have been posted along the beach. The danger signs kept most swimmers out of the water but we did see a few sneak in a few laps. They wont keep me out of the water. They want you to take the water seriously take warning seriously. Two people were attacked by a sea lion within 24 hours. The latest happened at 8 00 this morning when the aquatic park was filled with swimmers. We see seals and sea lions all the time and it is pretty unusual to be bitten. A man was bit in the groin area. We knew billingsley was on board when he heard the mans distress call. I heard the screams from the entrance to the harbor. And i looked over there and the guy was screaming, screaming. Thats when nearby swimmers went to the mans aid. An attack also happened near the entrance. The bites deep enough, both men were sent to the hospital. Both bites were fairly serious. I think both gentlemen are doing okay now but it is more than just a little nip. We want to close the cove to swimmers and try to keep people out for safety and try to assess the situation. Park rangers say incidents like this are extremely unusual. The last time people were bitten by a seaion near San Francisco was about 11 years ago. Also at aquatic park. While the signs may not keep everyone out, officials caution, answer at your own risk. Throughout, tonight brave ones. Officials will monitor the situation. But the plan for now is to reopen monday. The male california sea lion just finished three weeks of treatment for a kidney condition that left him sick and stranded. He was suffering from a bacterial disease that causes kidney failure. Our team of experts and veterinarians were able to treat him with fluids and antibiotics and he recovered. After some initial reluctance, chatzky scampered toward the water. The same toxin that closed down the crab fishery a couple years ago lt it can go to the brain and it causes brain damage that can change the behavior of the sea lions. It could be that sometimes humans and sea lions just get in each others way. It is so moving to see. Tourists sharon schwietzer stopped by to take in the flight to freedom. You dont ever get on see up front, up close like that. To see it walking, or flipping its way to the sea. I dont know why it is so moving but i think were connected in some way that we dont realize. Its easy to mix up seals and sea lions. A sea lion has external ear animals and large front filmers. They are often loud and social. A seal has to external ears and small front flippers that dont allow to it walk on land. Seals are shamed like torpedos and they bounce on their bell whiz not in the water.
