The el nino churning out in the pacific is shaping up to be one of the strongest ever. Kpix 5s chief meteorologist paul deanno live in San Francisco tonight. Paul, it could bring us one whopper of a winter although nothing is for sure. Nothing is a guarantee but all signs are pointing toward a very likely wet winter which is exactly what we need although we do not need the flooding. Heres the deal. The term godzilla is absolutely not necessary because this el nino event already speaks for itself. As of today, forget about this winter, as of today, it is already one of the strongest el nino events that we have ever seen in the past 50 years. And it likely is only going to get stronger. Over the next three months, this should turn into what i call a godzilla event reporter and there it is. The term godzilla used for el nino. This animation has that particular scientist so excited. The side by side comparison shows how 1997s very strong el nino formed. That you see on the left. On the right, the red and white areas showing a stronger el nino taking shape this year. The impact will be felt far beyond california. If it continues to build, this will have a tremendous impact not only over north america but over the entire planet. There wont be one continent that doesnt feel the impact of el nino. Reporter thats what the computer forecast models continue to suggest will happen. It is strong. It is getting stronger drawing comparisons to that el nino from 199798 which brought a lot of rainfall and billions of dollars in damage which we dont want. We may get one, the other or both. Heres what the pacific looked like in february. Notice the warm water is away from the coast of south africa. Thats where it is year round. An el nino forms when that warm water in the Central Pacific gets shoved to the east into the eastern pacific. Look at the image taken just a few days ago. That absolutely has happened. All of that warm water has been shoved from west to east. It continues to happen and right now we are already in the strong category and all indications are this will be one of the strongest guys if not the strongest el nino event since we have been recording these things going back about 50 years. The question is, what will that do for california . More specifically, the bay area . We know what it did in 97. We know what it did in 1982. We dont want the flooding but we absolutely need the rainfall. And looks like all indications are pointing toward a wetter thanaverage winter coming up. Thank you. California is in a drought. This could be a god send but it could be very dangerous for a lot of people. Reporter thats right. Reporter typically big droughts and with floods. Thats what happens. We are hoping it doesnt happen this time. But here it is. Thank you. Take a look at the aftermath of the fiery explosions at a hazardous chemicals warehouse in china.
