Airport Officials Say they are expecting the longer lines at security and also at checkin as well as heavy traffic getting into the airport. They are saying its worth braving the line. Right now, folks that are using mass transit we are dealing with some delays. This is bart delays, 20 minutes in all directions at civic center in San Francisco due to an earlier medical emergency. So plan accordingly. Good news with as, muni and caltrain. Those are all running on time. Well take a live look at oakland, the nimitz freeway, 880 looking aokay in both directions still very quiet conditions out there if you are heading over to the oakland airport. No problems. San mateo no problems although its a little crowded westbound from hayward to foster city. 14 minutes though in the green. 101 towards sfo, heres a live look, you can see traffic is very light. So as long as youre leaving the house on time, youll be a okay heading over to the airport there. I cant promise you anything once you get to the airport though. [chuckling] but its quiet for drivers heading along 101 all up and down the peninsula. The state insurance commissioner is urging companies to provide victims up to 100 of personal property coverage limits. A january 8th deadline has been set for companies to reply to the request. Policyholders have filed over 15,000 Residential Property claims in Sonoma County resulting in almost 7 billion in damages. Of that total, there were nearly 5,000 residences destroyed in the fires. Insurance companies have paid out about 2. 4 billion so far. Pg e is close to restoring temporary overhead power lines to coffey park in santa rosa. The west side of coffey park now has power and the east side is expected to be energized by today. This week, two napa fire survivors took time to thank the First Responders who came the rescue. The couple was lifted to safety from the atlas fire in october by a chp helicopter. A big deadline today for those looking to get Health Insurance through covered california. This is an extended deadline because of a strong surge in demand. More than 220,000 new enrollees selected a plan through december 15th. And that remains ahead of last years pace by about 10 . As part of the tax bill Congress PassedSenate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell told maine republican senator Susan Collins she would get a vote on two obamacare market stabilization bills by the end of the year but thats not happening. But no one believes that those two bills would make up for the detritus, for the destruction, that is caused by removing the mandate. And they are going to pay a price for that, big time. They talk about, you know, again the increase in premiums for so Many Americans will far outweigh any tax cut they get. The obamacare individual mandate thats still in place forces americans to have Health Insurance or pay a fine. That will be removed in 2019. People who dont have coverage for 2018 will still get find if they dont buy Health Insurance. Lawmakers on capitol hill have left themselves some extra work in the new year approving a shortterm solution to government funding. The federal government had faced a shutdown at midnight tonight. These are the last votes expected in the house for the day, the week, the month and the year. [ applause and cheers ] before leaving dc, they approved a stopgap measure to fund the government for four weeks averting a government shutdown. The bill serves as a shortterm extension to the childrens Health Insurance program, or chip, and provides funding for veterans healthcare. In response to the north korea threat, the measure also sends 4. 7 billion to the department of defense for missile defense. The development came just days after republicans passed a sweeping tax plan. Some lawmakers expressed concerns about the recent fast pace on capitol hill. People of goodwill of both parties try and fail to get us back to regular order and to end this process of moving crisis to crisis. The house also passed a separate 81 billion Disaster Relief bill to help puerto rico and states like texas, florida and california recently impact by hurricanes and fires. The senate though voted to delay the measure until the new year. The Emergency Response is over but recovery and rebuilding efforts go on. The president is expected to sign both the funding bill and the new tax overhaul bill as soon as today. The bill funds the government through january 19th. Today the United NationsSecurity Council will meet to vote on whether to impose new sanctions on north korea. Those could include cutting limits on its imports of refined oil and forcing all north koreans working overseas to go home within 12 months. The proposed sanctions are in response to north koreas test of its most powerful Intercontinental Ballistic Missile yet the government said it is capable of hitting anywhere on the u. S. Mainland new details on that suv attack in australia. The 32yearold driver who police say drove into christmas shoppers in melbourne was released from the hospital this morning. He is now in Police Custody and will be interviewed in the coming days. 19 people were hospitalized. Roads in the area are now back open. A suspect has been arrested accused of two mail bombings including one that targeted an east bay police officer. That second package was delivered by the post office last month to the officers home in alameda. Husband wife opened it and it exploded and burned his wife opened it and it exploded and burned her. 56yearold ross laverty is responsible. He was arrested in 2013 boo the very officer he targeted. Investigators say laverty mailed the bomb in retaliation against the officer. They say they used dna found on a battery from the first bomb to link him to the crimes. The first bomb was sent to a home in east palo alto. The man who opened that one had burns to his stomach and legs. Here is a look at what is left of the two bombs and what the labels look like. Laverty now faces federal charges of mailing an explosive device with the intent to injure or kill. No word when he will face a judge. Developing overnight in antioch, flames tearing through multiple buildings. At least five abandoned buildings caught fire just before 10 00 last night. The Contra Costa Fire Department tweeted this picture from the scene. No injuries. Another building later caught fire and it was put out. Right now its not yet clear what started these fires. We are getting reports of some debris flying from someones vehicle and causing many cars to swerve around in the area. But we arent seeing any major delays just yet. At issue the spillway problems that became evident during last winters heavy rain. Elected officials and those below the troubled dam say the federal government has to know why the spillway broke last winter. What we really want is a change in how this dam is operated because its operated in such a way that puts our communities at risk. Aaa estimates more than 6 Million People will be flying this weekend. About a million of them will be flying in or out of the three local airports. It will be heavier than normal checkin and traffic getting to the airport. People flying to see families say its worth it. We decided to leave really early. We have about 2 hours to kill at the airport now. [ laughter ] so thats what we we planned well but we have planned for a crowd and its doing well. Reporter a lot of those people are heading to the airport today not regular travelers. So experts say that could slow down some of those lines, as well. As you are, its already starting to stack up at tsa security here at terminal 3. Longer than normal lines for people trying to check their bags. Two elderly people were sent to the hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation. There were no major injuries. New details on an attempted robbery at a san jose drugstore that ended with the suspect dead. Police say a walgreens Security Guard shot and killed Maurice Charles after the two struggled over the guards gun. It happened at 8 30 monday night at a walgreens on santa clara and first streets. Police say charles had threatened the store clerk when the guard intervened. The shooting is being classified as the citys 32nd homicide of the year. A Richmond Police officer is set to be arraigned today in connection with an armed standoff at a hotel in San Francisco. It happened on sunday. Philip sanchez is charged with negligent discharge of a firearm, vandalism of 400 or more, assault with a firearm, and shooting in an uninhabited dwelling. Democrats are raising concerns about a premature end to the investigation into russian interference in the president ial election. Three separate investigations are happening simultaneously. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan today saying democrats are deeply concerned about republican efforts to end the House Intelligence Committee probe and yesterday, democratic lawmakers came together in a public show of support for special Counsel Robert Mueller. The president has been critical of mueller and multiple reports have suggested President Trump is considering firing him. If he is not guilty of collusion or money laundering, if he is not guilty of making deals with oligarchs to lift the sanctions, so that russia can proceed with projects to make money for him and his allies, what is he so worried about . I hate to say this, but we essentially repealed obamacare because we got rid of the individual mandate which was terrible. [ applause and cheers ] reporter the Obamacare Mandate that requires people to have Health Insurance or pay a fine is in effect next year and is gone in 2019. There are many elements of obamacare like individual Insurance Markets that are in place unless Congress Gets rid of it. Most evacuations have been lifted around the thomas fire in Santa Barbara and ventura counties. The long burning thomas fire is still on track to become the largest in california history. More than 1,000 structures have been destroyed so far. Its burned more than 272,000 acres and is 65 contained. From historic wildfires to catastrophic flooding here in california, natural disasters took their toll this year. Cal fire saying that they responded to 7,000 wildfires in 2017. The wildfires alone cost the state about 4 billion but floods back in february hit the state hard, as well. The statewide flooding involved about 48 counties in california and that ended up about 1. 2 to 1. 4 billion in damages. Just this week, Governor Brown requested a president ial major disaster declaration for the Southern California wildfires still ongoing. In the wake of the balcony collapse in berkeley, a new bill would require contractors to report settlements of construction defects cases. A proposed ballot measure would raise tolls on the seven state bridges by up to 3. That would raise the toll to 9 on the bay bridge during the commute. [chuckling] and 8 everywhere else. A poll commissioned by the mtc found a majority of voters support the hike with 54 saying that they would vote yes. But some opponents are crying foul. Drivers in alameda, contra costa and solano counties cross bay area bridges the most but voters in all nine counties will get to vote. Santa clara has the largest population in the bay area so it will have a big say on the proposal but a study shows only 3 of the Santa Clara County voters are frequent toll payors. Thats not fair. You dont use it, why vote for it . Thats not right. I dont think people in san jose should be voting if they are not going to be using the bridge at all. Regional leaders say that toll payors may not like it but it will fix choke points on highways and reduce congestion and would improve Public Transportation like bart, buses and the ferry system. I think i can guess how drivers who take bridges every day how they would vote. Yeah. It could be frustrating for one side. I personally think, um, i believe in elon musk and the hyperloop and the tunnels. I think that will solve all our problems. Someday. [ crosstalk ] the roads are getting busy. Theres no major backups over at the toll plaza right now. We typically see for this time of morning, but its Holiday Light at least this morning it is. So lets take it to our maps. We are tracking an accident in San Francisco. This is northbound 280 as you approach alemany boulevard there. Its blocking the right lanes. As you can see, its not causing a backup. Traffic is still light. We are starting to see some slowdowns along 19th avenue but thats to be expected. We will take it to 101 right near cesar chavez and you can see that traffic is doing fine in both directions. Again, very light. If you have some getaway plans, hit the roads now. You wont be in those delays as they are likely to come. Heres a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. No metering lights. We have not seen any delays or backups this morning and we even had some lanes blocked earlier. Richmond san rafael bridge delays building. We are in the yellow now for drivers heading across the span. But no reports of any accidents or stalls. 580 heading through livermore, drivers are seeing slowdowns eastbound and we had an earlier crash. It looks like now in the clearing stages. We dont have snow or rain in our immediate forecast. We need the rain so not looking too good that way. But if you are heading farther east, there is an area of low pressure thats sitting east of us bringing some rain showers to parts of the south. We have a storm system moving into the northeast.
