More cars this morning on the commute. But still looking good in the green, no delays making your a backup in the cash laza. Lanes. First backup we have seen in the last week or so. But 10 minutes into San Francisco. It could take a long time to iron out problems with Recreational Marijuanas new legal status under california law. As kpix 5s betty yu reports from San Francisco, the latest turn of events comes from attorney general Jeff Sessions. Reporter outside a cannabis collective in the mission, the sign reads, we will be going recreational on saturday. The first day it will become legal to sell Recreational Marijuana in San Francisco. We are still waiting and i assume all the clubs in San Francisco are still waiting. Reporter the owner is hopeful the approval will come through in the next 24 hours. He has already nearly doubled his staff to 16 workers in anticipation and customers, like this person who just moved to San Francisco, say they are ready to get in line. Normally, i would, like, either have someone to have a card get it for me or, like, get it from the street dealers. [ laughter ] so this is going to be easier for me and im not going to be, like, christmas like getting it from street dealers. Reporter . S. Attorney general Jeff Sessions issued a new memo which allows federal prosecutors to be more tough on marijuana cases. In response, Lieutenant Governor gavin newsom tweeted i think its a waste of time. They are trying to get back at californians, Jeff Sessions, and i dont think thats fair. People voted. People want it. Reporter enthusiasm for the new law can be found throughout the city. A Mexican Restaurant is advertising ticketed special dungeness dinners paired with cannabis cocktails, with a cannabis compound not known to be psycho active. We are in a progressive city. We thought we would partner with some of our vendors that we have been close to and create a special event. Reporter betty yu, kpix 5. The man who was acquitted in the murder of the death of kate steinle will be transferred to federal custody today. Jose Ines Garcia Zarate shot and killed steinle on pier 14 in july of 2015. Earthquake researchers are getting a closer look or listen to the tremor that shook much of the bay area yesterday morning. The 4. 4 quake struck at 2 39 a. M. And was centered near berkeley on the hayward fault. Kpix 5s andria borba reports. Reporter thats what it sounded like eight miles down in the hayward fault. You could see it coming. You can see theres some wiggles here still going on, and we can hear a little bit of that. Reporter the doctor is part of a team of geophysicist at the berkeley seismological lab. With cal directly on top of the hayward fault, their lab is directly below them underground and everyone is listening closely. In 2014, i took you inside an old mine shaft that runs into the hayward fault where scientists have planted some seismometers and microphones. It cuts 200 feet into the side of the cal campus but we can only go 20 feet inside because it isnt safe without the proper crews and safety equipment. And since then they have added more seismometers including one bore directly into the hayward fault at memorial stadium. It recorded the earthquake very nicely. Reporter the location couldnt have been more perfect. With the epicenter of todays shaker a mile away under the claremont hotel, that sound you hear is the pacific and north american plates moving past each other. The plates are basically stuck. And theyre stressing, sort of the way irish band and theyre stretching, sort of the way a rubber band stretches and stretches and stretches and you never know when this sort of a band is going to break. So what we actually heard is more like the rubber band breaking. It really sounds kind of like thunder. Reporter the doctor says its a warning about the tectonic time bomb that is the hayward fault. Places like the hayward fault when it goes and even temperature its only a 6. 5 or 7, its going right through hayward, oakland, berkeley, there will be a lot of damage. Reporter andria borba, kpix 5. Hopefully for some time we dont hear a sound louder than that, right, in the near future. At least thats a good warning for everyone to be prepared. Yes. Lets talk about your weather right now. Reporter thanks to Mother Nature, sadie was also born with a mind of her own. She is definitely going to be her own woman. Reporter and while in her own mothers eyes, sadie is perfect, in the not too distant future, perfection will be deliberate and created in a lab. Experts predict parents will be able to choose a particular child to have before the child is conceived. This is all thanks to new and emerging reproductive technology. Most of our babies in 20 to 40 years will be conceived in a clinic. Reporter the professor of law and genetics at stanford and author of the end of sex believes having actual sex in order to reproduce will become obsolete even for fertile couples. Babies will be created in vitro. Not in the bedroom, not in the car. Reporter he says fertility experts will create human eggs and sperm by using stem cells derived from a piece of your skin. Its already been done with mice. With a few skin cells, you can make a countless number of embryos. How many eggs do you get . How many do you want . Tens, hundreds, thousands, millions. Reporter the embryos will be screened as they can be today for certain genetic diseases as well as gender. In the future, well also be screened for certain traits parents might find irresistible, hair color, eye color, height, behavior. They will be asked what they want to know, they will be told their answers for their 100 embryos and asked to choose which embryo they want. The Way Technology is advancing, i think theres a very real possibility that could happen. Reporter she says with ivf women go through egg retrieval which is costly and requires injections. If they can have a little bit of skin removed and make eggs out of that, it would be easier medically. You know, a single male, samesex couple or a woman who is older and maybe doesnt have good eggs anymore. Reporter the benefit is a healthy child. The concern people may start to keep out other characteristics that are not clearly beneficial for the child from a health standpoint. Reporter add to the debate a new tool seen here in action for the first time. Its a stunning gene editing technique. The gene is getting edited and the dna is taken out. The next step, replace it with a different gene to fix a bad genetic mutation. Changing biology and changing the world. Reporter in the future, it may be used to permanently tweak or change diseasecausing genes in an embryo. The concern, that it will also be used to enhance babies. For example, making them smarter or stronger. Thats a world we dont want to live in. Reporter this woman is executive director of the center for genetics and society in berkeley. She questions if parents will feel pressured to genetically engineer their offspring. So they can get into the right preschool and the right grade school and the right college. We already live with that. Do we want to amp it up even more . Reporter as for sadies mother, she prefers Mother Nature but imagines the pressure. Someone like me decides to let Mother Nature you know take the lead, is that child going to be at a disadvantage .
