Right now its the air quality that is causing serious concerns because of the chemicals in the smoke. Late this evening a very unusual site not far from here the toll takers at the Richmond San Rafael bridge were ordered to abandon their post to seek shelter from the smoke. The bridge is still open to traffic but there will be no toll tickers until further notice. Meanwhile this fire fight continues five hours after it started. The 20foot high pile in the middle of the scrap Metal Recycling yard erupted into flames just after 5 00 this evening. Heavy smoke billowed out from the scrap yard. They describe some of the burning chemicals as toxic. Officials were especially concerned with high levels of carbon monoxide. The city of richmond called for a shelter in place which means stay behind closed doors and put towels in the cracks under the doors. This is not the time to go outside and become a spectator. They said shelter in place. They want everybody to stay inside. Okay. So were going to have to do that then. Eventually firefighters were able to get some large hoses in place and began inundating it with water. We just want to surround it and basically drown it and insure that the water stays inside during the operation. The Fire Department also used heavy equipment like this giant claw to move metal away from the source of the fire. Its actually grabbing it, grabbing it, and putting it in another pile. Just picking it up like if it were your hand like it was spaghetti and moving it to the other pile. Remove the fuel, the fire goes out. The chief just told me that they believe the fire is about 30 contained. But they will be here all night. As for those shelter in place orders they do not expect those to last until the morning hours. However they are still in place.
