But we will win next time. About Derick Almenas defense attorney appeared defiant. Saying he and Derick Almena will not take any plea deal. He asked that the prosecutors want to retry the case. He is ready to fight it. Im going to hang this again at minimum. We have a good shot. We have a much better shot. Reporter cameras were not in loud us out the courtroom. Codefendant max harris was aftehis attorneys patted him on the back he had to comfort his attorney who started crying. This isnt a time to celebrate for max harris. Because this community is sick. This community is sick because the leadership is sick. We need reform. The defense continues to blame the city and the warehouse landlord. Saying those people are responsible for the 36 deaths. Not harris or Derick Almena. The prosecution is noncommittal about a retrial. We will take into account discussions that any jurors might have had with our trial lawyers. There are several cases against the city of oakland. Against pg e and the warehouse landlord. Those cases are from the victims families. Experts are saying that this outcome is actually good for the civil cases. As you know Derick Almena and harris do not have a lot of money. The city and the landlord actually are the ones they say have a lot of money. They believe this will allow the lawyers the civil lawyers to go after the city pg e and the landlord. We will be waiting to see what comes next. The verdicts came as quite a blow to some of the families of the 36 victims for the ghost ship fire. Reporter shellshocked stunned those are some of the words that friends and family members of the ghost ship victims used to describe their emotions after hearing the verdict today. And coming out of court. Any of the friends and family members had been in court listening to testimony just about every day since the trial started. They were there hoping for some form of justice. Several friends and family members told me this is not the kind of justice they had envisioned. Many of them like David Gregory whose daughter died in the fire have believed from the very start both derek and max harris are to blame. Absolutely am disappointed. There is a man walking out there that should be in jail right now. He was willing to take a plea deal for six years. You tell me if that is a not guilty person. Reporter outside the courthouse we did see some families comforting each other. Some telling us the worst the loss of their loved ones has already happened. Since then it has been nothing but suffering. There were mixed feelings on that front. We did speak to a friend of one of the victims jennifer mendiola. That friend told us she believed all along Derick Almena is guilty. But that max harris is not. That has led to some conflicts with some other family members. Tonight prosecutors are not yet saying whether they will retry the case against Derick Almena. The das office said it wants to review the evidence. In any discussions between the jurors prosecutors that took place between before making a decision. All sides will be back before the judge in october. With the das plan.
