That was in the middle of the aftermath of the deadliest Natural Disaster in the history of the western hemisphere. The earthquake that struck haiti ten years ago this weekend killed an estimated 250,000 people and injured far more. Billions of dollars poured in to help. Despite that little has changed. Much of haiti is worse off than it was a decade ago. Theres one very bright spot that could provide a path for the future as we discover on our visit this week. Our trip began in the capital, portauprince in the week of haitis worse year since the earthquake. Mass protest, gang violence, rampant political corruption. Jobs are scarce. Most tragically basic medical care can be almost impossible to find. So this is the General Hospital in portauprince, or at least it should be the hospital after the earthquake decimated the old hospital a new one was planned immediately after. More than 80 million has been spent on it. It sits empty today. In the meantime the old General Hospital what should be the main source of care for haitis biggest city wreaks of raw sewage, piles of trash are every where. Etnaize janvier and her 4monthold son have been here for eight days. Hes crying because he has to go but cant go the bathroom. Im sorry. I cant imagine the pain hes in. Many patients dont get treated because they are often required to provide medical supplies. Something as simple as surgical gloves that the hospital cant afford. But take a trip outside the capital. You find a remarkable place that many doubted could ever exist in this country. This is Saint Boniface hospital up the mountains on haitis southern peninsula. It was started in 1983. In the last ten years has become a leading beacon for haitian hope. People come from hours away to this hospital and it could be anything. Emergency room, maternity, anything. Conor shapiro is president of Health Equity international which oversees Saint Boniface. He came in 2003 and his wife is haitian. On the day the earthquake struck he was at work. Massive shaking. All the patients came running out of the hospital. All the staff. Everyone was running in the yard. We didnt know what had happened. My wife was pregnant with our now 9yearold. Was in portauprince at the time. I didnt know what was going on. I can only imagine what that was like. I was very fortunate. My wife and our daughter, they survived. And many people were not as fortunate. It was a horrible situation. Instead of falling apart, boniface has only grown. They get 500 patient as day. Operating budget of 250,000 to now 8 million today. People risk their lives to get here because they have no other choice. This is the entrance road to the hospital. It is full of ruts. It is mountainous. Passable only by dirt bikes like this and 4 x 4 vehicles. These bikes effectively act like ambulances for people who need care. The drive up that treacherous roads takes the better part of an hour. In addition to the three or four hours just to get to the entrance. This woman is nine months pregnant and could deliver at any moment. We have patients coming all day. Constant flow of patients. For more than 2 Million People on the southern peninsula, this is the only place to get an emergency c section. The only place with a neonatal intensive care unit. Over 95 of these babies were born here at the maternity center. If you didnt do the work here, what would happen . Very difficult to talk about. If this unit wasnt here these babies would all die. What percent of them here survive . Right now weve been able to make it so that 85 of the babies here survive. Saint boniface has become one of the primary Teaching Hospitals in all of hasty. It houses the spinal cord Trauma Center that treated many people injured in the earthquake. I think what is great were not treating most of those spinal cord patients that came from the earthquake. The reason is they are back home living their lives. They learned how to become productive members of Society Despite their handicap. We reached our goal of reintegrating them and allowing the home become full productive members of society. That could not be more true for max. Every morning he wheels himself up the hill for fork at Saint Boniface. He was trapped under rubble for three days after the earthquake. When he was pulled out he was told he would never walk again. Where would you be if it werent for this place . I would be on the street, i would find some place to live. May not be alive. Saint boniface does not turn any patients away. They receive no money from the haitian government. They survive in a mix of private donations and outside grants. Dr. Inobert pierre is in charge of running the hospital on a daily basis. Hes been at Saint Boniface for 18 years. We inspire people. Always teaching has been more and more part of what we do here because we want to inspire in the haitian system and without tons of finances that has commitment and accountability and hard work. We asked Conor Shapiro why boniface has succeed when others failed. No magic position. Just slow successful build. Absolutely. The community here has been the leader of this project from the beginning. They are the ones now working here at the hospital. Really its about investing in the haitian people and physicians, the health practitioners, the nurses, lab techs who are here already and we need to invest in them to provide that care. Theres lots of excuses for why things can go wrong in haiti but we dont accept any of them because we know this is the right thing to do. Lots of excuses for why things can go wrong. We just dont accept any of them. The first baby you showed and the turmoil of that baby and juxtapose it to what the hospital is able to do. Its incredible. Absolutely incredible theres at least one place. Imagine the heartbreak of the mom with a child who is screaming. We cant treat you because you dont have a dollar for surgical gloves. All the doctors and nurse and staff that are on board who are haitian, who are working so hard to ensure that that hospital is still there. Every Single Person who works at Saint Boniface is haitian. They build from within and listen to the community and thats why it works. Whenever theres tragedy people give money right away and in this case you see money thats actually working for this hospital. Want to know where all the rest of that money went. Not to call it a soap yet . There was a time when everybody called it a soap opera in front of a civilian that was a clip from the 1982 comedy tootsie starring Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange. She won best supporting actress. Shes now appearing on netflix in the politician. But Jessica Lange is being acclaimed for her work behind the lens. One of the great movies of all time, tootsie. Just as enduring her attachment to her midwestern hometown. Latest inspiration for one of her other great passions capturing the world in powerful pictures. On a bracing january morning, along the shore of lake superior, a photographer discreetly moves in to find her shot. Is it difficult for you to be undercover effectively on the street . Not in the places i go, no. Jessica lange likes to shoot here. Around duluth, minnesota. Its the one place that has remained constant in my life. After living all over the world and traveling every where ive wanted to go i keep coming back here. It was the starting point for her latest book of photographs called highway 61. This is one of the shots in the book. It is. It is. One of her subjects, an abandoned cement structure in the lake called the ice house. In the summer its like a raft. Its out there. The kids swim out there. And they dive off. Hard to believe right now when were standing here in 45 degrees. Are we on 61 . It becomes 61, yeah. Highway 61 runs right through duluth. This actually has been here since the 60s. The electric fetus. The electric fetus. An old head shop way back in the day. It actually still is probably, i dont know. The road also crosses this town where Jessica Lange was born. My way out of town. My way back. It has a lot of resonance to me. This girl from the North Country went off to the university of minnesota on an art scholarship in 1968. I couldnt get the painting class i wanted so to fulfill requirements, credits, i signed up for a photography class where i met a couple really charming young men. And ran off to europe with them. Apart from an adventure in europe what did you get out of that photography class . I didnt stay in it long enough, although i did love the hours in the dark room i have to say. You put the paper in the developer and suddenly this image starts to mysteriously magically coming up out of the paper. I dont know. Still thrills me. But it was a while before she started taking pictures. That adventure in europe later led her to new york where she was cast in king kong. Put me down. Put me down. Launching a long amovie career. If g left insad of right. Got in that painting stimia. Who knows. What prompted you finally to pick up a camera . I think it was when my children were little. And i thought i want to, you know, document this, not just with snapshots and kodak, and so i taught myself, really. It was one of the things that immediately felt necessary in my life. Yeah. What do you think gave you that feeling . It was such a perfect antedote to being an actor and being observed and photographed and filmed and watched and judged. Suddenly i could be completely anonymous behind the camera. The minnesotan moved to new orleans for a time. What connected it was, of course, i was 61. I started driving it. Highway 61 which runs 1400 miles through eight states down the center of the country has long inspired artists. From blues man Roosevelt Sykes to that other minnesotan bob dillon. You start wandering off the road . Yeah. I would drive through small towns and stop the car and get out and spend an afternoon. You shot in a lot of treats like this for the book. Yes. Theres something i found whats gone missing more interesting than whats still here. This looks like this could have been taken in the 1950s. I know. Doesnt it . Many of her highway 61 photographs are now on exhibit at the Howard Greenburg gallery in new york. Like the one titled cherry chill taken on a hot summer day at an amusement park. Suddenly out of nowhere, these two Little Angels plopped down. They were also in this kind of central fatigue of the heat and the day, and it just i mean its one of g county fair. Did you ask to take her picture . I did. I love her gaze. She just looked right at me and so available and so generous. This is the cover of the mn most extraordinary face, so beautiful. On open night the gallery was packed with fans and actor friends like Susan Sarandan there to celebrate Jessica Lange. What i love about photography you would look at things where normally you wouldnt pay attention. For me i think its emotional more than anything else. Its an emotional reaction to a moment. I just shoot when i feel like shooting and what ie shoot and, yeah. Grhy a great its a great exhibit will run the through january 18th at the Howard Greenburg gallery here in new york. And her book highway 61 is on sale now. She got her camera actually from sam shepherd whom she had two of her three children with. Duluth can be a beautiful and brutal place in january. Perfectly said. I had both feelings when i was up there. Youre two for two with king kong now. Jeff bridges who also is a very good photographer. Seems unfair to have that much talent in front of a lens and behind it. Life is not fair. Stick around. We got something coming up just for you. Thats when i started to do stand up. Stand up has been in the heart of this comedian since her High School Days in South Central los angeles. When a counselor recommended her for summer camp at the laugh factory. They brought in some comedians. Richard pryor. He said something to you. Yes. Ill never forget it. Im killing it. He is like stop, stop, what are you doing . Im telling a joke opinion no youre not. He said youre getting on my god damn nerves. People dont come to comedy shows to hear about politics or religion or your life story. They come to have fun. When youre on stage you need to have fun. Thats a philosophy that ive tried to apply to everything i do in life. I grew up in foster care. Anybody else grow up in the system . One of her gifts is making fun out of her real life. Im the only special [bleep] foster care, homelessness, her father abandon meantment its detailed in her memoir. Did you forgive him. I did. I believe treating everyone the more i want to be treat it. Maybe mentally everything wasnt there. I feel like there was a lot of fear involved. A lot of guilt. Things that have nothing to do with me. Then things she hasnt talked much about at all. I didnt talk about like being right by a police officers. I dont know how to make that funny. Theres nothing funny about that. I cant even laugh at that now. Theres nothing funny about somebody stealing something from you, you know. That youll never get back. Its not funny. What do you do with that . You just set that on the shelf over there and when it needs to be addressed, its addressed. You know when its time to share it. I feel i had to have that experience to help others heal and help others speak their truth. That wont define my existence. She has a las engineerlike focus defining her career. Did you just say zhuzh. Which includes her latest movie like a boss. Its super fun. Its about two best friends who has kind of like evolved. Even though were from two different walks of life. But we come together like Peanut Butter and jelly. Were delicious. How much have you taken complete ownership and control . I try to take complete ownership and control of my entire destiny because at the end of the day its my thoughts, my vision, my know how thats able to get things moving, right . Thats what ive learned. If i apply myself in believing myself i consider that for a bunch of people. Everybody. And she is ready. She produces and writes all of her stand up. She wants more control in that arena as far as movies are concerned and she is just moving forward and ahead. I mean she has like five different projects going on. Sometimes at the same time. Sounds like somebody i know. Yes. I really liked her. Yeah. I love when she says youre an overnight success. Ive been doing this since 1997. He first worked as a dishwasher in a florida restaurant managed by his mother. Years later he found himself struggling to make his mark when he happened upon the French Laundry. He took it over and made it his own and make keller a food world superstar and turn this stay world Class Destination for dining. Can you believe its been 25 years of the French Laundry under your leadership . I look back at the 25 years and it seems a blink of an eye. Reporter in that blink of an eye, Thomas Keller turned this restaurant into a culinary landmark. Whats the most important critical feedback you listen to . Feedback that comes from us. Seldom are we totally happy with one service. We can do 100 guests and one thing you missed and thats the one thing you focus on. I look at our profession as a sport franchise. Were a baseball team. Every day whether we win or lose the night before were able to come back and do it again. Every time we serve a dish we have an opportunity the next time to serve a dish is to make it better. Reporter his Work Foundation is the foundation of each of his 15 restaurants and bakeries and helped him to become the First American chef to earn three michelin stars. You currently hold seven michelin stars. How important is that system and that award to you . We never ever thought that michelin would come to the United States. So when they announced they were we were all very excited, of course, but none of us ever thought that we would receive the highest accolade that michelin could give which is three stars. You receive three michelin stars today its a great thing but the burden of responsibility has now become that much heavier going forward. And every year we think about that. Every day we think about that. Making sure were responsible to those stars. Reporter kellers in the French Laundry stateoftheart kitchen, balance a sense of urgency with finesse. Im here with you in the kitchen in california and were team. It all begins with respect for the ingredients and the French Laundrys ingredients couldnt be fresher. Many of them grow across the street. This is chinese lettuce. It has a nutty flavor. Reporter so you eat the base as well as the leaves. Aaron is the head gardner responsible for pounds of produce weekly. He brings the goods to the sous chef. This kitchen has been called one of the greatest cooking spaces in america. It recently underwent a 10 million renovation. Its something keller never could have imagined when he bought the restaurant in 1994. I was on my last legs. I had a dismal time in los angeles. Lost my restaurant in new york. This was it for me. And to see whats happened here in this restaurant and how its influenced so many other things in our community and our state and our country, its something that is im extremely proud and blessed. You could not have a more charming setting than this town. Keller took a walk with us down washington street. Home to five of his restaurants. Including bouchon. Feels like im in paris. His newest adventure a casual mexican eatery. Again in a completely different vibe. So great to meet you. What does it and into you as a 27yearold chef to have the stamp of approval and partnership of Thomas Keller . Very humble. Very grateful for it. Hes given me the keys and hes telling me heres the steering wheel. Heres the menu. Reporter here youll find elevated street food like tacos. These are from mexico. Reporter thats the best taco i ever ate in my life. Im not going to eat a better taco. Im done. Or this, meat cooked on a wood fire grill and brushed with adobe. Absolutely spectacular. Thomas kellers star power has drawn highprofile chefs to this city. Thomas keller paved the way. Im one of those who admired thomas for so long. And just had the opportunity to be here and give my form of expression and my form of cooking through steak and creating a neighborhood steak not just for tourists but locals as well is a big deal for me. Reporter the socalled master of meat brought his signature teach to napa from his hollywood steakhouse. Youre known for the tom ahawk steak. This is aged for 100 days. One of my special things to cook. Reporter that will be gone. The bark on that is perfect. You know the terminology. Reporter juicy and tender. Its magazinic when you can make both of those things happen. For fine dining no other place like this. A destination inspired by Thomas Keller. The chef who dared to take a risk humbled and broken 25 years ago. Where do you see yourself 25 years from now . Hopefully on a golf course. Restaurants are part of my life, always a part of my life. Will continue be a part of my life. No longer can i do what the young chefs do. No longer can i do what the sous chef do. They are better than i am. Thats what continues to motivate me. Every generation is better than the generation before because that generation gave them the opportunities. Gave them the tools. Gave them the training. So im confident that even if im on a golf course that whats happening here at the French Laundry will continue to represent the level of standards that we have established in this golf course with the tomahawk. We want a tomahawk right there. We left very inspired and it. You said the best mexican food you ever had. I think that chef is really making magic. Very authentic. He comes from a family of teachers and chefs. Thats saying something. You talk about Thomas Kellers success but i never heard the story of his failure before. Its all about that. Thats where it begins. Thank you jamie wax. Now heres a look at the weather for your weekend.
