Coming up, the request from a group of south bay teachers they say theyll need before they feel safe walking into a classroom again. The governor says churches can start to reopen, but the Public Health officer here in Sonoma County says not quite yet. How the diocese of santa rosa is now caught in the middle. What is it about what we are proposing that is so risky that we say no, we cant do that . Tonight protesters have blocked off streets in both northern and Southern California. What sparked the outpouring of anger. Now at 11 00 and streaming on cbsn bay area, dangerously hot weather still gripping much of the region. Good evening, im ken bastida. And im elizabeth cook. A warm night across the bay area after another day of recordbreaking temperatures, and well have to endure a little more extreme heat. Chief meteorologist paul heggen joins us now with all the details, paul . One more day to go with that hot weather for inland portions of the bay area. Records fell across the region once again today. Concord made it up to 100 degrees. Santa rosa set a new record at 96. Hayward made it to 87 degrees. San jose a high of 94. The exception along the coast and right around the bay, 66 in halfmoon bay and only up to 72 degrees in San Francisco. Similar temperatures near the water tomorrow. Now, inland temperatures are going to back off a little bit. Mix of upper 0s and low 90s instead of near 100 degree readings. Its still hot enough for the heat advisory to continue until 7 00 tomorrow evening, but there is relief on the way. First a cooldown then a chance of rain. Well talk about both coming up in the full forecast. All right, sounds good. Thank you, paul. Tonight a power outage in oakland has one woman with a heart condition fearing for her life. On saturday, the heat wave knocked out power at rv parking site and city has set u for people at higher risk for catching covid 130 Homeless People staying at the site known as Operation Home base. Because of her condition, gina needs access to her oxygen tank 24 7. But when the power wint out, she was forced to switch over to her emergency supply. Today, five days later, she had to call 911 to get help. This is what shes supposed to have on at all times. But with no electricity, you see it wont work. If i go without oxygen too long, i will wind up going into respiratory failure and die. Now, with the heat wave straining the power grid, gina is worried if its safe to come back. We reached out to the city for comment to ask whats being done to restore power for the months ahead. Developing tonight, protests in minneapolis once again turned violent in the wake of a black mans death in police custody. And here in california, demonstrators have also taken to the streets. This is video from the past few hours. An auto zone store set on fire. Crowds have been clashing with police all night. People throwing molotov cocktails, officers firing back with tear gas rounds. In another neighborhood, looting this target one of several stores being cleaned out. All this just some of the anger boiling over after video showing an officer kneeling on the neck of 46yearold george floyd while the suspect fleedz i cant breathe. Floyd died at the hospital. The officer in the video and three others at the scene were all fired. And protesters in northern and Southern California have shut down streets tonight in a show of support for demonstrators in minnesota. This is the scene again in los angeles where the crowd has been gathered for several hours now. The 101 freeway briefly shut down at one point. Father, father, cant you see . And a similar scene in sacramento tonight. Protesters blocked off streets there Holding Signs and chanting slogans, calling for more police accountability. The people are tired. Not only black people, its white people, its latino people, asian people. We are sick and tired and were fighting back. And the only way we can fight back is by shutting down and disturbing the peace. A firing is not enough. They need to be serving jail time, period. No word yet on any injuries or any arrests. Tonight the u. S. Has reached a sobering milestone. More than 100,000 americans have died from the coronavirus according to health experts. And that number is very likely an undercount. Nearly 3,900 of those deaths have been here in california. Today the state surpassed 100,000 confirmed cases of the virus. And tonight the diocese of santa rosa says its done following Sonoma Countys orders, the bishop there has given pastors the green light to open churches starting this sunday. Kpix 5s Andrea Nakano explains why Health Officials fear its just too soon. Reporter the diocese of santa rosa covers a wide area from petaluma up to the oregon border. Now, in five of the six counties, churches have already reopened, but here in Sonoma County the Public Health officer says its just too soon in light of a recent increase in cases over the last 14 days. What is it about what we are proposing that is so risky that we say no, we cant do that. Reporter Bishop Robert was thrilled to hear the governor announce that some counties could move forward with the reopening of churches. That plan came to a halt as Sonoma Countys Health Officer announced she wont be easing anymore restrictions. This begins to look like a restriction on my right to be spiritually present and available to my people. Reporter the bishop says he understands the seriousness of covid19 and only two of the 16 churches in Sonoma County plan on reopening this sunday, under strict social distancing guidelines. The countys Health Officer, though, is concerned about the trend in the last two weeks. Its due to the large increase in covid19 positive cases and hospitalizations this past week. Reporter Sonoma County has seen 203 new cases in the last 14 days, and doctor may says the hospitalizations suggest that the coronavirus is circulating among the vulnerable population. Still, the diocese of santa rosa says after nine weeks, its time to give back spiritually to those who wish to attend services on sunday. While we are surviving, we are certainly not flourishing. Religion is a part of peoples human flourishing, and it is essential. Reporter the bishop says since capacity will be limited, the church will continue to stream their services online. In petaluma, Andrea Nakano, kpix 5. For the first time in weeks, a bay area mall opened its doors to shoppers earlier today. Not many people showed up to the Solano Town Center in fairfield. Some wore masks, others without them showing varying attitudes on social distancing. Many stores inside the mall remained closed. In neighboring napa county, some barbershops and hair salons welcomed clients back today. But at businesses like country cutters, there are new strict rules in place. Customers may have their temperature taken and must wear Face Coverings. Stylists wear masks, gloves and eye protection and wipe down all their equipment after every appointment. California teachers are on the edge of their seats as the state prepares to release some new guidelines for reopening schools. Tonight kpix 5s maria medina has the demands from educators in palo alto before they feel safe enough to return to their classrooms. Reporter in palo alto, dozens of teachers just submitted a proposal to their district asking for ppe not only for themselves but their students. We are talking masks, face shields and gloves. But thats not all thats on their list. Our teachers are troopers, im telling you, they are working harder than ever. Reporter Terry Baldwin is the president of the Palo Alto Educators Association which represents 900 employees who say theyll be ready to get back into a classroom if the district helps protect them and their students. We are requesting ppe for both us and students. Reporter besides masks, the teachers are asking district leaders for plexiglas face shields, disposable gloves, smocks, hand washing stations and covid19 or antibody testing. But the requests go beyond ppe. Theyre asking for increased nursing staff, a deep cleaning of classrooms before the start of school and protocols on how students line up, enter and exit classrooms. Were going to have to use every part of the campus to make sure that we have six feet of distance. Reporter superintendent tony thurman dropped clues on what statewide guidelines for reopening schools will look like when theyre released in early june. Students and staff should be wearing a Face Covering at school. Smaller class sizes at every school. That means smaller numbers of students on buses. There will be individuals who will be taking temperatures of students. Reporter the first lesson for the next school year is how to keep everyone safe. It would definitely make it harder if some of the teachers had to be out for long periods of time, so we want to keep everybody healthy. Reporter and the teachers are also asking if they must quarantine that theyre not forced to use their sick days. Theyre meeting with district leaders is this friday. In the south bay, maria medina, kpix 5. A 94yearold man murdered in San Francisco tonight. One city supervisor says his killer should never have been on the streets. He is not someone who should have been making decisions for himself. Hes not someone who should have been able to menace the neighborhood. The bay area remembering an activist at the forefront of the fight against aids. Larry kramer decided the real battle should be in the streets. And tonight the nations most famous doctor weighs in on the legacy of larry kramer. And bay area fire crews had th [music] [music] especially in times like these, strong Public Schools make a better california for all of us. Strong Public Schools make a better california heres what we want everyone to do. Count all the hugs you havent given. All the hands you havent held. All the dinners you didnt share with friends. The trips you havent taken. Keep track of them. Each one means one less person vulnerable, one less person exposed, and one step closer to a healthier community. So for now, keep your distance. But dont lose count. Well have some catching up to do. Tonight a San Francisco community is demanding answers after a 94yearold man was beateno dth while he walked his dog. Kpix 5s joe vazquez spoke to neighbors who say they repeatedly warned the city about the suspect. Reporter leo was 94 years old. He told neighbors he moved to america after his family escaped nazi germany. He was walking his dog on memorial day monday when police say a homeless man, 53yearold peter, attacked, beat the elderly man with a stick, sending him to the hospital where he died. Peter, who lived on the street in front of the church, was quickly arrested and faces a charge of homicide. Really sad but also very mad, very angry. Reporter shaun says peter has violently threatened many neighbors, including herself. He said the parks for people, not for dogs, not for animals. And you need a beating and im the one to give it to you. This is like a worst case scenario. This is nightmare. Reporter supervisor rafael has been working for years to get a system in place to place the people who are most likely to hurt others or themselves into conservatorship. Hes not sure peter fit the criteria. But i do know based on what i was hearing from neighbors, he is not someone who should have been able to make decisions for himself. Hes not someone who should have been able to continue to menace the neighborhood. Reporter the legislature has passed two state laws about it, the latest last year. Still, San Francisco has not compelled a Single Person into conservatorship. And why is that . The department of Public Health says a program has finally been designed. It is still awaiting approval by the court system. Until then, the dph says, quote, we will support clients who meet the criteria with other types of services. The supervisor wants to make sure there are enough beds for folks who will eventually be placed in conservatorship, even though theres now a budget crisis. And in fact, as we are slashing in other areas, we expand there. Because the crisis on our streets, the crisis of Mental Illness on our streets is worse than ever. Reporter joe vazquez, kpix 5. Also tonight, the world has lost a courageous aids activist. Larry kramer. Kramer was one of the founders of the aids coalition to unleash power, or act up. His anger over the governments lack of action during the aids crisis made him well known. Among those he confronted in the early days and then later befriended, top aids researcher dr. Anthony fauci. Weve had hundreds of phone calls over the years, and very often wed end the phone call but hed say after wed even argue a little bit, hed say, i love you, tony. And id say i love you too, larry. And thats the way we ended it. Yeah, well, larry kramer died at age 84 of pneumonia. He was also an author, a playwright and a film producer. A pair of brush fires sparking Quick Response by firefighters in two bay area communities. Hot, dry conditions helping flames chew through less than an acre near happy hollow in san jose. And off highway 4 in bay point in contra costa county. High temps ahead will continue to keep fire crews on alert no doubt. And hopefully its going to start to cool off sooner rather than later, paul . One more hot day to go. And its not going to be as hot even inland as it was today. And even today was a couple degrees cooler than tuesday. Were making progress. Baby steps. Mild temperatures overnight. Locally dense fog. Youll see that in just a moment. One more hot day on the way, and then cooler weather for everyone friday, even a chance of light rain showers on saturday. Lets start there. But we will see some radar action start to show up through the Morning Hours on saturday. Looks like the north bay has the best chance of the highest amounts of rain, but a little sneaking farther into the east bay. South bay you might get a little bit over a trace. All of this is going to quiet down as we head into saturday evening. This is not a longlived rain event. This is the view from our Sales Force Tower camera looking to the north to the golden gate bridge. All were seeing is fog. Same view toward the bottom of our sales force camera look to the east. You can see the bay bridge. 73 in concord. Down to 54 degrees in the city. 60 degrees in oakland. 56 santa rosa but 66 in san jose. Temperatures all over the place. The fog is an issue early tomorrow morning around the bay and along the coast, but it will dissipate and temperatures will warm up from lows in the 50s to around 60 degrees. Slightly cooler than where we started off this morning. Temperatures for jordie in San Francisco are going to warm up, but were not talking about a lot. Climbing up into the 70s near the airport. I think around 70 degrees for that High Temperature right downtown. So its going to be variable even around the bay. Farther inland another hot day just contrasting that San Francisco hourbyhour forecast with concord, low 90s for High Temperatures. Not quite up to record territory, but were talking about hot weather inland. 60s along the coast. South bay into the 0 isst, even close to 90, in fact, at 90 for san jose.
