It was a week when americans had to grapple with the question of whether the violence and the looting were expressions of legitimate pentup rage or deliberately provoked or just orgies of opportunityistic criminalality. Is there a sense that americas time as the dominant country in the world is, if not over, at least nearing an end . Definitely there is that kind of feeling. And probably the next number one is going to be china, and theres not much you can do about that. But i think there is definitely a feeling that the American Century has passed. The real wall is the wall of Civil Society in america. The wall of american women, the wall of the americans who are revolted when black citizens and africanamerican citizen is killed in cold blood by crazy and murderer policeman. Reporter but comedy became a way to cope and as a teen, he started doing open mic nights in manhattan, which led to what he was sure would be his only season of saturday night live. I was like 10, 12 years younger than everybody else. So it felt like it was a joke. It felt like very makeawishy, charity. It felt like charity for sure. Reporter how confident were you as a comic . It sounds like you were but also you werent. I was confident as a comic because you have to be. When youre on stage, its where i feel my most comfortable, but offstage, i never really thought i was like, i dont think im a great comic or anything like that. Im very selfhating. Petes one of those guys you see him and right away, you think that hes going to do great things. Most important thing about pete is hes insanely funny. Thats horrible to say, but, yeah, i used to close my eyes on a closed road, usually at night, and i would drive without a seat belt. Reporter but if 2017 was the worst year of his life, it was also the best, the year he found help and, through the writing and making of his new movie, a possible way forward. The story behind the attack is told in a new book by Chris Wallace of fox news. He talks with our david martin. A nation already on edge pushed to the brink. Reporter as the anchor of fox news sunday, Chris Wallace has been at the center of the cultural and political wars swirling around President Trump. So, his new book seems to come out of nowhere. One of the things i love the most about researching this book and writing this book is it has nothing to do with donald trump. Vice president harry s. Truman takes the oath of office as 32nd president. Reporter countdown 1945 published by simon schuster, a viacom cbs company, tells the dramatic story of the 116 days from Harry Trumans sudden and unexpected swearing in as president to the dropping of the atomic bomb on hiroshima. It was the biggest decision maybe any president has ever made. Reporter Vice President truman had been presiding over a Dreary Senate debate when he was called to the white house. Eleanor roosevelt is dressed in black, and she says, harry, the president is dead. And he said, mrs. Roosevelt, is there anything we can do for you . And Eleanor Roosevelt says, harry, is there anything we can do for you, because youre the one in trouble now. President truman asked the full roosevelt cabinet to remain in office. Reporter truman and the cabinet looked stunned at his swearingin. I felt like the moon, the stars and all the planets had fallen on me, he said. Secretary of war Henry Stimson pulled him aside. He says, mr. President , i need to tell you about a topsecret project of immense importance that has created the most powerful bomb ever put together. Reporter truman had been Vice President for only three months and knew nothing about the Manhattan Project and the race to build the atomic bomb. So this is the original weapon of mass destruction. Absolutely. The world had never seen anything like this. Reporter the military was busy planning the invasion of japan, an operation general George Marshall estimated would require 700,000 troops, take a year and cost tens of thousands of american casualties. The bomb had not even been tested. Truman had no idea whether it was going to work, and he basically said its a science project until you can convince me that this is actually a weaponen, which doesnt happen until july 16th. Reporter on that morning, at alamogordo, new mexico, the scientists who designed and built what they called the gadget, were ready. At 5 30, this pulse goes to the bomb, which is up on 100foot tower, and something happens that has never happened in the history of the world before. Reporter this is what it looked like. This enormous Mushroom Cloud billows 40,000 feet into the air. The 100foot steel tower is vaporized and every living thing from antelope to blades of grass were vaporized. Reporter truman was in potsdam, germanyny, with his first meeting with churchill and stalin. He realizes this isnt a science experiment anymore. Hes got the most powerful weapon imagined by man. Reporter the president has at his disposal a weapon that can destroy a city. Now you got to choose a city. Right. Eporter hows that done . They wanted a major city that had largely been untouched that had a military impact and that had the topography that would augment and magnify the explosiveness of the bomb so it would have as dramatic a military and psychological impact as possible. And at the top of the list was hiroshima. Reporter was hiroshima a legitimate military target . Absolutely. It was about 250,000 people, but there were about 50,000 troops garrisoned there so it was a legitimate target. Reporter surely, they realized women and children would not be spared. He basically made the calculation, if we go and invade, were going to kill a lot of japanese civilians, and were also going to kill a lot of americans, or we can drop the bomb and just kill the japanese. It sounds coldblooded, but that was the calculation. Reporter the bomb weighed 9,000 pounds and was hoisted into the belly of a b29 flown by colonel paul tibbets, who named the plane for his mother enola gay. It took off in the Early Morning of august 6th from the island of tinian. The bomb fell from 30,000 feet to 1800 feet before detonating. The copilot robert lewis jotted down perhaps the most succinct and apt description of the moment. He writes down, my god, what have we done . A short time ago, an american airplane reporter truman was aboard ship returning from the potsdam conference when he announced the destruction of hiroshima. We are now prepared to destroy more rapidly and completely every productive intersurprise the japanese have in any city. Reporter he was jubilant about it, because he thought, now finally, maybe we can end the war and we can save hundreds of thousands of american lives. Reporter all that was left standing were structures built of concrete, and they had been gutted by fire. But the city was offlimits to reports until a young correspondent named john hersey broke through censorship and wrote probably the most famous Magazine Article ever in the new yorker. And that is the first time americans really found out in graphic detail what it was like to experience the bombing at ground zero. Reporter wallace found out from hideko tamura, who was a 10yearold girl in hiroshima. She sees people incinerated, she sees people who the thermal wind has sucked their eyes out. She sees bodies all over the place. She sees people who have been vaporized and all thats left is the shadow of where they were against a wall. Reporter japan did not surrender until three days later after a second more powerful bomb named fat man was dropped on nagasaki. Truman at one point writes, i think that the flower of American Youth is worth a couple of japanese cities. Its official. Its all over. Its total victory. Reporter world war ii, the most terrible in history, was over. 75 years later, a stark truth remains is. A Nuclear Weapon has been used in warfare only twice, three days apart, and the only country thats ever used it was the United States. If you think about the last few months maybe itll give us a new perspective. Maybe well see things weve been missing. Maybe itll help us see just how connected we all are. And maybe. Reporter for generations, tulsa, oklahoma, had a secret. My mother cared for an elderly white man who, on his death bed, rambled on about the smoke and the fires and the shooting and the killing. Reporter Mechelle Brown, Program Coordinator at the citys greenwood cultural center, says her mother tried to learn more. As she went to her inlaws and said, what is he talking about . What happened in tulsa . And they said, look, we dont talk about that around here. And dont go asking anybody about it. Reporter the secret was passed from generation to generation. We never discussed black wall street or the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Reporter the Tulsa Race Massacre happened 99 years ago, when White Tulsans descended on the citys thriving black district, known as black wall street. White rioters killed hundreds of black residents and burned the neighborhood to the ground. It was sparked by an accusation that a black man attacked a white woman in a whiteowned office building. Theres a scream. The elevator doors open, and a man working in the building came running to see what had happened and claimed that sarah page had been assaulted. By the end of the day, they were claiming that she had been raped. It wasnt taught in schools. The newspapers that reported on it were removed from our library. It was actively covered up in our community. Reporter tulsas mayor, g. T. Bynum, says he first heard about the massacre in 2001. Somebody brought it up, and i thought, thats ridiculous. Theres no way something that awful happened in tulsa and nobody talked about it for 80 years . But then come to find thats exactly what happened here. My greatgrandmother rebecca clutcher lived on black wall street. Reporter she said her grandfather barely escaped. She was selfsufficient. She had a barbecue joint. She was beautiful. All of a sudden, she had to run in fear of her life, jumped on back of this truck and fled to muskogee. Reporter Rebecca Brown crutch ever lived until 1994. We didnt get a chance to talk about the stories because of the fear. They were afraid to talk about it because they thought it might happen again. Reporter crutcher says she felt some of that same fear after her twin brotherter earns shots fired reporter terence was shot and killed by tulsa police in 2016. He was unarmed. I answered the call, and i heard my dad, my hero, screaming at the top of his lungs saying, they killed my son. They killed my son. And i just finally asked, who killed terence . And he said, the police. Hes got his hands up there now. Reporter Terence Crutcher was 40 years old when officer Betty Jo Shelby noticed him standing near the side of the road. Still walking. Reporter his car was in the middle of the street. Enough for taser, i think. Reporter in the Police Chopper high above, officers give the kind of playbyplay. That looks like a bad dude too, to be honest. To see him walking away with his hands up, i see the visual of him in my head every night that i lay my head down, and i pray to god, i ask him, take this away. Reporter mayor g. T. Bynum took office three months after crutchers death. A lot of people saw what happened to Terence Crutcher and they said, this wouldnt have happened if he was a white man. Do you think thats true . No, i dont. Reporter hundreds turned out to mourn Terence Crutchers death. Which bynum suggests was a result of drugs found in crutchers system. Drugs that made him unable to follow directions. Officer shelby says he failed to follow orders to stop, and that she shot him believing he was reaching into his car for a weapon. It is more about the really insidious nature of drug utilization than it is about race in my opinion. Reporter you think hes sizes up the situation to see reporter in 2017, officer shelby spoke with Bill Whitaker on 60 minutes. If i wait to find out if he had a gun or not, i could very well be dead. Theres something that we always say id rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6. But as it turned out, he did not have a gun. No, he did not. Reporter the protests came after a jury found Betty Jo Shelby not guilty of manslaughter. Dont shoot reporter 2017, 1921. Mechelle brown says the same attitudes that led to the black wall street massacre linger in tulsa to this day. No one was ever held accountable for the hundreds of lives that were lost. Do you think that this memory of the tulsa massacre also shaped the behavior of the police in tulsa in the generations afterwards . Not as much as racism that continues to be prevalent in our community. Racism is something that is learned at a very young age. During the massacre, there were white men who went and gathered their sons and brought them to fight alongside them. They gave them the right to carry a gun and to shoot an innocent black person without any fear of any type of consequence. My brother had struggled like millions of other americans. Reporter Tiffany Crutcher says she was stunned by officer shelbys acquittal. I know the family was not satisfied with how that case played out in the justice system. Were you satisfied . I think we have to have faith in that justice system. Reporter still, last week, mayor bynum announced that hes proposing an independent monitor to review police actions. What was the thing you most wanted to change in the aftermath of your brothers killing . I wanted to change the culture of policing, this notion of us versus them. Reporter so crutcher, a former physical therapist, is now a fulltime advocate for police reform. The Police Killed your brother. How do you get to a place where youre not afraid of the police . I will be honest. I am afraid. But i do believe that we can get to a place if we change policies and if if people are held accountable. Reporter Mechelle Brown as a resident of tulsa, as a black mother, i am scared for my children. I am scared for this Younger Generation who are tired of being told to pray about it, to sing, to go to church, to put it in gods hands. Theyre tired of hearing that. Reporter 99 years after black wall street, the fear lives on. Who would think, in 2020 and the United States of america, that we would fear from the very people that are meant to protect us . Reporter Tiffany Crutcher cant change how her brother died, but she hopes there are things she can change. For tulsa and for herself. I believe that, in order for that to happen, that the laws at the highest level that give Police Officers the authority to commit legal murder with no accountability have to be changed, the use of force standard has to be changed, and when that happens, he could the. Weve pulled together, worked hard to keep each other safe. Weve flattened the curve and are starting to reopen our communities. De shields was performing eight shows a week until march 12t 12th. I go to sign in, and the production stage manager says, what are you doing here . I said, im reporting back to work. She says, theres no show tonight. Reporter and here at the walter kerr theatre, there havent been any performances since, but the lights of broadway havent been entirely dimmed by the pandemic. The seats may be empty, the actors and crew nowhere to be seen, but every stage on broadway has a lamp like the one behind me burning continuously. Its called a ghost light. And its a tradition that goes back to the late 1800s. A ghost light is a light that stays on inside the theater even when the house is dark, when the shows not going on or when a show is not running. Reporter producer and Author Jennifer Ashley Tepper says a ghost light serves a practical function. When the show ends and the theater becomes dark, you have a light on so that the people that are backstage, the people that are keeping up maintenance can have a way to see before the whole theater is lit again. Reporter as for the ghost part the more romantic history of ghost lights is, of course, that theyre lit so that the ghosts will either have company and be able to move around freely or to keep the ghosts away. So theres a lot of legends about that in the theater. Reporter i know. It just looks like a light bulb on a stand, but the ghost light means so much more than that. The only light in the theater was the ghost light, which is downstage center. I was thinking about this when Ahmaud Arbery was tracked down and killed by those men in georgia because they thought because he had been on a construction site that somehow he was up to no good. Ive gone on construction sites other than my own homes many times. When i was a teenager, i went on them regularly to smoke weed, to drink underage. I doubt very sear lus i i would have been arrested and i certainly would not have ended up dead in the street. An africanamerican man is threatening my life. Reporter it played out in central park when amy cooper called the police because chris cooper, a birdwatcher, had asked her to put her dog on a leash. Im being threatened by a man please send the cops immediately i think it probably happens every day. Reporter alicia galvez, a professor who lives near central park, says white people weaponize their privilege. Ive moved through academic institutions, through universities, without anyone questioning whether i deserve to be there, whether i earned my spot there, and i know that my students, my colleagues of color, my friends have been questioned as to whether they earned their place. To have to justify the place that youve earned is a tax that i dont pay. Reporter but it is for people like mark whitaker. Ive had that experience a lot of walking into a store and people looking at me. Are you a shoplifter or whatever . Reporter whitaker is a media executive. He was also the first black editor at Newsweek Magazine and, like me, hes a urge fa. So to me, its the most heartbreaking thing on earth to tell these young beautiful boys that people who dont even know them hate them. The talk. The talk. Is is reality. Its the worst thing ever.
