Now speciaren progress. Wellnumbers in a moment, following the unexpected news last friday that the u. S. Economy added 2. 5 million job in the month of may. Cbs news analyst Jill Slesinger has the numbers. Reporter we have now seen 44 million americans file, and the good news, we continue to see the declining levels, and this is the tenth straight week. I think its very hard for a lot of people to understand. We have heard from a lowhat giv you keep saying we have new people filing for claims, and last week a report said 2. 5 million americans went to work and the reason that there is a problem, they are weekly numbers, not monthly numbers, and the weekly numbers count how many people lost jobs, not people who actually have gotten jobs, and thats a big difference between the two, along with the time frame difference. Jill, people pay a lot of attention to the official Unemployment Rate 13. 3 , but theres discussion if that accurately captures the situation out there. Can you walk us through what we should know what the likely rate could be. Reporter the monthly report has two different surveys. The one is the household survey. When the Labor Department conducts the survey, they want to find out why people are out of work. Over the last few months, people have answered the question or the of in an unclear way. They are classifying themselves the way we would say people are classifying themselves as vacation or taking the summer off. The Labor Department notes over the last three months, the official rate is probably understated. If you look at 13. 3 we talked about last friday, its probably 16. 3 , and going back to april, the 14 plus month of unemployment, probably closer to 20 . The bureau is trying to rectify the issues, and they know theres issues, but its such a strange situation, tony, its hard to help people understand the way they answer the questions has a huge impact on that top line reading. Yeah, but even if the Unemployment Rate is 16. 6 , thats lower than projected, and theres evidence that the worst is behind us in terms of the pace of decline, and theres a possibility that a rebound has begun, but it may take time. Jill, thank you very much. Our coverage will continue on our 24hour streaming network, cbsn.
