People in mission bay have noticed homeless tents popping up in the last few weeks seeing the tents, junk, and trash covering the sidewalk leading to 280 south. Get in a car and ride down east 14th and go into east oakland. Renter here, but she used to own this home nearby. My oldest son went off to college from that house. My daughter was born in the house. My middle son graduated from high school in that house. Reporter during the mortgage crisis of 2008, her husband had a stroke, and he stopped working, cutting their Family Income in half. While applying for a loan modification, she fell victim to predator lenders, one of 35 homeowners in her neighborhood to lose their home to foreclosure the same year. It was nationwide, and that was the heart breaking part, too. We were literally losing the opportunity to pass wealth on to our children. Reporter she ran a day care in their first home and continued that in their new place until she found high levels of lead in the soil. I didnt want to take chances. Kids and lead are not a good mix. Vanessa said the Property Owners never responded, and it eventually forced her to shutter her business. So no kids means no income. No income means no money to pay rent. Reporter that put her family at risk yet again. So once we got behind on rent, then, of course, came, you know, the notice on the door, we were candidates for eviction. Housing is the lynch pin of Structural Racism. Reporter uc berkeley is studying Structural Racism in housing. This experience is typical for many African American families. During the mortgage crisis, black families were 70 more likely to be targeted by predator lenders than white families. Many were located on land with a history of red lining. Red lines prevented black families from buying homes in certain neighborhoods and qualifying for homes. Its a system that adds up to a severe, persistent outcome in the bay area.
