Developing out of nasa, we are a day away from another historic launch. The worlds biggest earth observing satellite will keep a watch full eye on the planets rising sea levels. We are joined by a nasa research scientist, dr. Z, with more on the mission. Its so good to see you. Why is measuring sea level so important and what does it tell us about Climate Change . Good morning. Sea levels are affecting so many of us directly. It affects actually all of us especially those in San Francisco and beyond who live by the sea. The sea has been rising an inch or so every seven to eight years. That increase is going up and of course in part, roughly a third, is because of the warming of the ocean that the other two thirds come from melting of the ice and other things. Of course related to large scale global changes of the type you are talking about. We have learned sentinel 6 can help to improve weather forecasts. What data does it collect for that and how does it all work . What the spacecraft is doing is continuing a series of 30 years that gave that knowledge i talked about. Its basically using a system to measure the height of the ocean as it goes through the orbit in space. As a result of that, it sees that that rise is not the same everywhere. But especially where there is a storm with huge pressure changes, if there is low pressure, that water comes up. We see that the water is buckling up so to say from that measurement. We can measure the pressure which goes into the forecast of the storms. Dr. Z, whats your role on the mission here on the ground and how can we follow along . Theyre so excited to launch tomorrow after 8 45 on nasa tv and also online on nasa. Com sentinel6. We look forward to watching, dr. Z. Thanks so much for joining us. Thanks. Have a good morning.
