To adopt the new state restrictions before things get even worse. That leaves neighboring napa along with solano and san mateo as the only bay area counties still open for things like Outdoor Dining and personal care services. There is hope on the horizon, california is set to receive 328,000 initial doses of the Pfizer Vaccine starting tomorrow. Of those, about one in five is earmarked for the bay area. Getting those doses here is just the first challenge. Wilson walker is live outside of Good Samaritan hospital in san jose with the security concerns coming along with them. Are they afraid people will rip them off or Something Like that . Reporter that is just one of the concerns, you can drop an entire list of things that can open the potential for any number of crimes. You can be sold fake vaccines, adjust a number of things. So long with the logistical complications of rolling out this vexing, its also been called the largest Cyber Security threat in human history. Now is that hyperbole . It is not. The reason for this is about 7. 5 billion people exposed to this virus. The global clamor for the vaccine presents intellectual levels, fraud and phishing scams and something more like an alteration on a train robbery. They are afraid someone will go and wait for the vaccines when they arrive. Securing the vaccine itself is one concern is the rollout begins, the movement of shipments, now considered. We have 53 distributions working based on the state. And they dont want people to know exactly where the vaccine will be because of the safety and the vaccine itself. So with the Security Threat until the vaccine will begin arriving in the bay area this week and the Detailed Planning on how to execute the distribution has been unfolding for months. While we often hear about the race to get frontline workers vaccinated, that does not mean this will be a spring. The other thing we have to focus on is staggering. Only about 20 to 30 of the workgroup, like nurses in acute care and Critical Care units. The head pharmacist at ucsf says the vaccine can produce side effects like headaches, muscle aches and nausea. Those things can keep people out of work, so they will not vaccinate everyone as fast as possible. We dont want all groups in a unit out of work but we are ready. Staggering is an applicable word in so many ways in all of this. But a longawaited vaccine phase in this entire saga, really just hours away, wilson walker, kpix 5. We are always updating our coverage on the virus and the vaccine is on kpix. Com and cbsn bay area. Download the kpix 5 news out for 24 7 access to our reporting and you can also use it to track the weather. Speaking of. A bit of a calm between the storms as we look live over San Francisco from the mark hopkins hotel. But there is more rain on the way. Darren peck is tracking another onetwo punch on way for tomorrow. Punch number two is off the coast. Tomorrows rain is out here lets take it from there and put it into the futurecast and bring it forward. Its not until about 2 00 in the morning that the leading edge of the rain gets down to the bay area. Started at 2 am, take that line of rain and play it forward. Watch the progression. From the predawn hours all the way through about one in the afternoon. Before that line, the first line of showers clears the bay area. Everyone will get rain. And then in the early to Late Afternoon another line of showers will move through. That will behave differently. Theres a possibility for a few isolated thunderstorms and i will go over all of this and a lot more detail in the complete forecast. We will slow it down and talk specifics. And theres one other thing, in addition to sundays rain there is also a Coastal Flood Advisory for two things. The swells have picked up in the pacific, so this is a concern for surf points. In addition to that, the highest king tides so far that weve had this season are happening over the next three days. We will talk about that as well. Thats all coming up in the complete forecast in a few minutes. Three people are in the hospital tonight following a crash involving a muni bus that collided with another car at 24th and mission about two hours ago. Police are not sure who was at fault, the three people that were hurt are expected to be okay. Also new at 6, talk about a close call, the San FranciscoWire Department weeding out these pictures, it entered right above the steering will instruct this center console. Amazingly the driver walked away with just a scratch. A push to get weapons out of San Francisco. A gun buyback was held in the city. They are breed and sf pd held the event at howard place. The buyback is intended to make streets and homes safer by reducing the number of guns owned by civilians. Anybody could turn in their guns, no questions asked. It is important to get the guns off the street and its important to get the word out to people. If you have a firearm in your home not properly store that is a tragedy waiting to happen. If someone is having Mental Health issues and realize they shouldnt have a gun anymore, we want those guns off the streets. Since the gun buyback began in 2014 more than 2000 guns have been removed from San Francisco streets. After nine months, the warriors are back at the chase center for their Season Opener with no fans. Coming up we will take you inside the arena. Plus, covid19 forcing a cancellation, what it wont cancel. And the veteran who survived world war ii faces another battle, for his life. I said to him, how do you feel and he said terrible. For three days i didnt quite know where i was. His fight to get home to his wife for their 72nd we have the power to harness californias Abundant Solar and wind energy, but its not available all day long. Use less energy from 4 to 9 pm for a cleaner california. Looking live at the chase center, the words are playing the first game in nine months. But things look a lot different this season. Betty yu on the new protocols to key players and Staff Members safe. Reporter it has been 277 days, if anyone has been counting, since the warriors have played basketball here at the chase center. And we are on the concourse level. Normally at this hour it would look so different, flooded with fans, but of course the concessions are closed and there are no fans this season. Just one of several things that are so different about this experience. All media members and staff were rapid tested prior to entering the arena today. We were not able to fill this part of the process due to privacy concerns but we did wait in a room, socially distance, for the results. The warriors are following strict safety protocols, masks must be worn at all times and all of us are broken into colored zones. We did get a peek at the arena inside as the players wear practicing earlier today. It has been nine long months, as you said, to get to todays preseason game. It is different for the players, the staff and of course for coach steve kerr, he spoke about his experience. We have to be ready for anything that comes our way. For example, we were thrown a curveball today a little bit. We were going to have a shoot around, kind of a walkthrough at about 10 00. Then there were some delays on the testing from yesterday. So we just pushed the walk through from 10 00 to 3 00. And we did that this morning, after we heard the news from our Training Staff on the testing. The coach also added that he watched games yesterday and it was very surreal for him. It really hit home for him to see others empty stands. It is a first for many, so a very familiar yet strange experience. Absolutely. Surreal for sure, that is the keyword. Thank you. Then goes aart is coming to live in San Francisco next year. The socalled immersive van gogh exhibit will open in march at the svn west. They use Projection Technology to invite audiences inside to see van goghs iconic works. We talked to the producer about what people can expect. The art is being deconstructed, they more from one into the other, and it really becomes this stream of consciousness that tries to get inside of van goghs mind. Its just a complete departure from how youve likely seen art in the past. Organizers say the exhibit also features physical distancing markers, capacity limits and temperature checks on arrival just like everything else. We first brought you an interview with the producer of the exhibit and you can watch that for free 24 7 untrain one or on our app. And speaking of watching on our app, why do that when we have darren peck here live in person. The beauty of checking in on an oldfashioned newscast, you will get a lot more detail than you typically would by looking at your phone. Theres the rain already lined up on the coast. Lets skip ahead to 2 am. The first will start in the predawn hours. In sonoma county, you are seeing some of the best rain of the holiday. And then it will be right over the heart of the bay. The really nice, well organized line like this makes the forecast easy. So right through the heart of the bay at sunrise and then it keeps going and that here we are at 10 30 and the line is just now clearing santa clara valley. And then we get a little bit of a break in the afternoon before stage ii arrives. Here we are in the early afternoon at 2 30. If the second line in this one will behave differently. It was still march its way across the bay area, but look at how different it looks. Not that it will be exactly there, but is important to see the difference here. So the second phase for the second half of the day comes with an isolated thunderstorm or two. It wont be as widespread or consistent and there will be plenty of breaks were nothing is going on. But for the second half of the day, dont be surprised if you hear a rumble of thunder off in the distance, you might even get some small hail by the second half of the day. Then by sunset, we are done. Then another good round of rain, and we are falling way behind on the season. And maybe another close to 4 10 through the rest of the bay, san jose, you will get shadowed a bit but you will get some measurable rain. And yes this turns into snow in the sierra. And with that there is a winter storm warning, it will not be fun to drive in the mountains. But from 7 00 until 4 am, rough driving. And then there is this, Coastal Flood Advisory because the northwest swells will pick up. That is a surf, right . So there is concern at the beach. But in addition to the high swell, that just so happens to be occurring at the same time of the highest king tide yet of the season. Sunday, tomorrow morning and 9 30, monday at 10 20 and then tuesday at 11 am the tide will be high. This is the kind of stuff that comes over the embankment of the embarcadero, maybe flood some lowlying sections of 101. So thats for the next three mornings, keep that in mind. Daytime highs are fine, and the 7 day forecast will show you another small opportunity for rain. By the time we get to thursday, does not look super impressive. Lets start sharing some of the bay area bright spots. This is what weve been doing to get the holiday lights seen. We may not be getting out in the bay area like we used to, so this is how we are sharing it. This one comes from newark, they transferred their front yard into the north pole. So thank you for sharing this with us. We want to see yours, if youve got some decorations at your house and you want to spread the light around, email it to us, bayareabrightspots kpix. Com. The nearly 3 million doses will be shipped in super cold containers, keeping them around 94 degrees below zero. And they will be flown to more than 600 Distribution Sites starting monday. The Cdc Advisory Committee voted hours ago to recommend the vaccine after the fda authorized it for emergency use. But there is still one last hurdle to clear for the first shots can end up in americans arms. Reporter a landmark in the fight against the covid19 pandemic. Admit the fdas rigorous standards for quality, standard and efficacy. The fda granted the emergency authorization for the Pfizer Vaccine. Science and data guided the fdas decision. We worked quickly based on the urgency of this pandemic, not because of any other external pressure. A Cdc Advisory Committee recommended the vaccine to be used in the united states. Ups and fedex will start shipping the vaccine on sunday to hospitals, Healthcare Facilities and pharmacies. We expect 145 sites across all the states to receive the vaccine on monday. Another 425 sites on tuesday and the final 66 sites on wednesday. That amounts to 3 million doses according to the health and Human Services secretary. Pfizer vaccine has to drive and move in 70 degrees celsius. The only way to keep the package cold at that temperature is with dry ice. Along with dry ice each package will have a gps transmitter and thermal sensor as temperature and time is of the essence. I cant think of anything more important to do right now than this. The glimmer of hope comes amidst the darkest days of the pandemic with record numbers of new covid cases, hospitalizations and deaths. We are not done, we are not done until every american has access to the vaccine. To every american that wants it, receives it. As for when, that all is left to be done is for the cdc director to give the green light based on the Advisory Panel accommodation today. Meanwhile the government just doubled its order of the Moderna Vaccine for a total of 200 million doses. Both pfizer and modernas products are about 95 effective but modernas does not have to stay quite as cold during shipping and storage. That 200 million doses return order will cover 100 million americans because these vaccines require two doses. A primer to start followed by a booster a few weeks later. One of the biggest concerns right now, side effects like fatigue, soreness and chills may deter people from getting that second dose. But a physician tells us that even mild side effects are a good sign. When people get the vaccine there will be a small percentage of people whose immune response will be very robust. Meeting they will feel like they have the flu, their arm will be very sore, but what that is telling you is that your body is doing a really good job about recognizing the viral particles as not being a part of you, and being something that is invading and they need to fight. A happy Holiday Season for families in need. A positive sign of the pandemic. What covid19 has done for the health of the planet. Weve got good news in terms of getting more rainfall tomorrow. We will timeout sundays rain. Then we will add a little bit of context to just how far below we are for this time of visit your volvo retailer for special offers during our holiday safely sales event. Weve all heard of dogs nipping at drugs and bombs are now some are being used to detect covid19. Researchers in france lebanon took sweat samples from 177 patients, 96 of whom tested positive for covid19. I have dozen dogs were put through trials and successfully detected the virus at least 76 of the time. Experts say it is a promising first step but more work is needed to actually put it to use. Speaking of putting things to the smell test, another study is testing a scratch and sniff sticker as a diagnostic tool. It is not approved yet but it is a prototype. You just scratch the card, sniff and using an app you enter what you smell or dont smell. University of colorado researchers say the test could prove useful because many infected individuals lose their sense of smell for a week or longer. If we can catch 80 of the people who have covid dont know it, that can make a huge impact. We are all looking for solutions right now. We are in a pandemic and you cant wait for the perfect solution. This is something we can try right now. It should work. And we should be trying it. So theyve asked for emergency approval through the fda and that test would cost about . 50. And for up Positive Side of the pandemic, Carbon Dioxide emissions fell by a record 7 this year from 40 billion tons of co2 emissions to 37 billion. As you might expect, transportation emissions accounted for the largest share of the decrease because of course fewer people are out and about. But if you were out about you may have said liquid from the sky, what do we call this . I know. It had been since the middle of november since weve had some, so this is a very welcome change. So before i go into sunday, which will be more impressive, for we get there, just a little perspective. We had about half an inch of rain in the north bay and quarter inch everywhere else. I want to use San Francisco to put some perspective on this. Nearly half an inch of rain is good and for us it probably seems like a lot. Thankfully we started to help out with their rainfall deficit. Not exactly. We measured the rainfall starting october 1. So far we should have had already nearly 6 inches of rain in San Francisco heard we got nearly half an inch today, meaning eric ran total for the whole season so far is barely less than an inch. Weve missed out on 5 inches of rain this season. And even with the rain we got last night, we are still only had 16 of where we should be for this time of the year. Is that high def doppler showing us the rain off the coast. By 2 am tomorrow that will be off the coast working its way across the bay area. 5 am, going through sonoma county. 7 am, going through the heart of the bay. I knew its down in the south bay, then we get a little bit of a break through the early afternoon before phase 2 comes in. Another well organized line, but this one is different. Its early afternoon, weve got the heating of the day, the air will be rising and thats how you develop thunderstorms. So this second wave that comes through will be different. It will be more pop up and isolated and potentially some thunderstorms mixed in. Maybe your rumble of thunder for even get some small hail. Then that clears out and after sunset things will wind down and we will be done. Then lets put more rain on the gauge, we could get perhaps another half an inch of rain. This is good news. We need a lot more of these to start catching up. Thursdays got a small chance. More snow in the sierra, yes, perhaps another foot of snow or more. With the snow level at around 6000, it will be a mess to drive in. A winter storm warning from 7 00 tomorrow morning until 4 am monday morning. Plan on delays, not a fun time to drive in the mountains. Warning those tomorrow go back into the mid to upper 40s. The last thing you will notice because the rain will have your attention. In daytime highs will warm into the mid to upper 50s. That next chance of rain, a small one, thursday. It looks like it will be focused mainly in the north bay but we will keep our fingers crossed because its time to start getting greedy. We need all the rain we make your holidays happen. Yes for less with christmas approaching, the pandemic is having a grinch like effect on a lot of traditions. Those who organize yearly toy drives are finding creative ways to get the job done. Reporter weve all made changes in our lives because of the pandemic. Unfortunately that includes christmas. But when it comes to kids there are some things that simply cannot be canceled. If you do not want to be deterred by covid19 or anything else going on, these families need us and we want to give back to them as much as we can. Normally the Silicon Valley shop with a cop Program Pairs kids up with an officer for a shopping spree. This year it was a driveby event at the local elks club. Santa waved from his chair and a machine created a miniature snow flurry for cars to drive through. Officers from a range of south valley agencies line the route, handing out bags of gifts and spreading cheer to more than 240 families. We are lucky to still have this event and follow the protocols. People need that, they need to know we are still out here as human beings. Hayward Police Officers also couldnt hold their normal holiday event so they spent the last two days going to individual homes to hand deliver gifts and toys. And speaking of toys, those who ride the expensive kind gathered in San Francisco today to deliver a stash of gifts collected by motorcycle clubs for the San FranciscoFirefighters Toy Program. Its a great brotherhood. Everybody here i think of the greatest people ive ever met in my life. You know, they all do it and its important to them. The uhaul truck they loaded with gifts got a thunderous escort from the riders who point out that motorcycles may actually be the safer way to travel during a pandemic. We think that the Harley Davidson motorcycle is the original machine, thats been our go to in march since things have gotten weird. But thanks to those who dont easily get framed the pandemic took a backseat today so kids can at least have a happy ending to this most trying of years. The kids say it all.
