Now its a new school year, a fresh start for many students. Oh, my god, im so proud of you. Reporter superintendent Kyla Johnson Trammell says thats exactly why everyone is coming back to school today, including her, who we joined at recess. Im just excited school is starting. I think you can feel the energy, kids being excited to be back. You can just see all of the staff just doing their thing to set expectations and build community. Reporter a goal she says is related to the ongoing Recovery Process from the pandemic, so starting earlier than other districts has been a great tool for them in the last few years. Weve actually been starting earlier probably for the last six years weve been starting in the very beginning and it was really to be able to align with our Community College system because for our high schools we want our kids to be able to take more dual enrollment courses and to be able to access Community College. So for the Certification Courses and to be able to take classes to enhance what they have in high school. So being able to align our calendar with theirs makes more of that possible. Reporter maria says she likes the idea of an early start. Its good for the kids to get used to the school and not be afraid. Superintendent johnson trammell added this years School Districts priorities are to continue battling issues like public safety, mental health, and academic and financial challenges. Ultimately she says its all for families like abraham and his grandmother. Of course, families and School Officials say school is not a game. So theyre ready to tackle every single challenge they could face this year. As we mentioned, this is the first year the district is implementing its new common good proposals for the new teachers contract. That includes housing and transportation, help for unhoused or low income students, shared Decision Making on spending grant money, more support for schools where at least 40 of the students are black and specific protocols to follow before closing a school. First alert chief meteorologist paul heggen is here with a look at what to expect in the week ahead. Boy, it was beautiful today. Look at that blue sky behind you. Blue skies, a little hint of haze, but air quality has been fine. Temperatures were very comfortable around the bay. It was toasty inland over the weekend. Now those numbers are going to drop off as we head through the next few days, blue skies as we look out from the mark hopkins hotel, nice to see. This view may be obscured by fog in the next several hours as the fog redevelops along the coast and surges across the bay later tonight. Current temperatures are still hot, especially inland and the east bay, tridelta and the valley 90s, 80s for petaluma and napa and close to 90 degrees in san jose. Temperatures around the bay have backed down. San francisco and oakland were well into the 70s earlier. Now youre already below 70 degrees and its only 59 degrees in half moon bay. That onshore breeze is reasserting itself. Temperatures tomorrow will be maybe a degree below average in san jose, but close to 10 degrees below average in concord knocking your highs down into the upper 70s after you spent a few days around 100 degrees, kind of weather whiplash. Eventually well climb up the other side of the temperature roller coaster in a few minutes. A Fire Department spokesperson said it could have been catastrophic. Today we heard from San Franciscos fire chief. Its not our job to babysit their vehicles and while they may have, you know, folks back at their control center that are making suggestions, we have had vehicles on scene for 30 minutes at a time that we have had to babysit and thats just unacceptable. During todays hearing crews showed a video that it created for First Responders to help train them on how to deal with the driverless car in an emergency, which included cutting off its roof you see there. Waymo says its already trained 2,500 First Responders in california. Sometimes its very difficult to get these training sessions on the calendar because we know how busy First Responders are, but we work very hard to have the opportunity for that collaboration. Then there are incidents like this, waymo stalling in the middle of a street. This happened on divisadero and blocked the path of a muni bus. Some cars had to figure out where to go and go around it. Another concerned party is bicyclists citing examples of other cars using their bike lane to get around confnfused autonomous cars. Theres still a number of things we would like to see them be doing to makeke sure th their vehicles are behaving or driving safely on our streets here in San Francisco. So after hearing from all the parties today, the state commission is set to vote thursday on waymos bid to expand its fleet in San Francisco. Well be following it. New techniques in california forests are helping fight fires before they even start. Drones are now being used to map the forest. A team at university of nevada, reno, is in the middle of that ambitious effort digitally mapping the state of california, including all of the underbrush of forests. The results can give cal fire and others a picture of how to mitigate wildfire risk. Cal fire is really interested in where the fuels are. The Resources Board is interested, okay, if were going to treat the forest, how does that affect the long term outlook on the effects of carbon, on one hand, and also Water Quality on another . That technology is expected to help in both fighting and preventing those wildfires. This season weve been relatively lucky. I dont want to speak too soon. Knock on wood. Knock on wood, but so far weve been okay. Part of thats to do with it hasnt been hot for long stretches of time. Yeah. Long stretches of hot weather and weve avoided really any instances of offshore winds that really escalate the fire threat because those are even hotter and even drier. Odds are as we head farther into august and september, we will have to worry about it. Of course, the vegetation is tinder dry as it always is this time of year. At least its gone okay so far. Lets look at what you need to know the next several days. It was hot today, but well turn the corner back into a below average temperature pattern the rest of the week. Low cloud cover and fog redevelop and spread across the bay, a little drizzle along the coast, temperatures substantially cooler tomorrow and that cooler air sticks around through the end of the workweek, a little moisture trying to sneak up towards us from the south late this week. We always have to monitor that for the potential of dry lightning with such dry fire fuels across the bay area. A warmup does kick in as we head into the weekend because thats the pattern weve been in seemingly all summer, hottest temperatures over the weekend and drop below average during the workweek. Lets check out futurecast. You can see the fog doing its back and forth dance every night and early morning, retreating to the coast by midday. The moisture to our south, well be on the edge of it. So some additional cloud cover will make its way into much of the southern half of the state, but whether or not that cloud cover moves overhead, thats okay. We want to avoid any possible of those showers or thunderstorms, specifically dry thunderstorms developing in our neck of the woods. It does not look like thats going to be terribly likely. The bulk of the moisture will stay to our south. Long range outlook, once we get into the above average temperature pattern this weekend, that might stick around a bit longer. This might be our first prolonged stretch of hotter than average temperatures, good chance of above normal temperatures not just for the bay area, but the entire west coast in the six to tenday outlook and eight to 14day outlook from the Climate Prediction Center now above normal. Hotter weather for inland parts of the bay area next week. Looking down towards san jose from black mountain, 88 degrees. Other inland temperatures in the low to mid90s. Oakland and San Francisco were in the 70s earlier but dropping back down both locations to 69 degrees. If youre heading out to the coliseum as bruce bochys texas rangers, a phrase with which im still not accustomed, will visit first the as and then go across the bay and take on the giants this weekend, 60s throughout the game as the fog, low cloud cover will spread across the bay by the time the game is winding down. Futurecast shows that pushing far inland by early tomorrow morning. It will back up out of the inland valleys quickly. You see the gray hanging out by noon for parts of the north bay and around the bay. This is a stubborn marine layer over the next several days and along the coast. I hope you enjoyed the sunshine the past couple days because i dont think youll see very much the rest of this week. Temperatures tonight mostly 50s, some of the warmest spots at or above 60 degrees and highs tomorrow a little below average. The suns energy has to go into dissipating the fog as opposed to warming up the air. Temperatures go from almost 100 degrees in antioch today to the mid80s. Youll be the warm spot tomorrow, 70s and 80s inland and the east bay, 70s north bay, around 80 in san jose, 60s from San Francisco and oakland and just barely above 60 degrees along the coast. Temperatures hover in place wednesday, thursday, and friday and we warm things up in San Francisco and oakland the second half of the weekend and early next week. The warming trend will be much more noticeable the farther inland you go, both the north bay and Santa Clara Valley reaching the upper 80s sunday and monday while the trivalley and delta are up to familiar territory in the 90s. You should see more sunshine by the time the weekend rolls around, but not until then. Thats okay. We can wait. Soak it up while we still can. Thank you, paul. Still ahead at 5 00, a group of determined girls from the south bay has made it all the way to the Little League world series and theyre getting a big show of support from their hometown.
