He discover the restaurant crayons they use get thrown away for Health Reasons so he started melting down on crayons to fashion new ones. Is nonprofit, the Crayon Initiative, has saved 55 million crayons in the landfill. When you look back on how much we have accomplished, it has been pretty cool to think it started with a four packet crayons we got at a restaurant. Reporter today, the Crayon Initiative operates out of the danville headquarters and a separate warehouse in concord. We have our kitchen back. We dont have the smell of crayons in our house anymore. Reporter with the changing venue, crayon deliveries have exploded from shipping three to 35 hospitals in 12 states to more than 260 childrens hospitals in nearly every state. In all, 734,000 children have received an 8pack of new crayons since the nonprofit started. The goal is to keep growing so we can do 1 million packs a year. Right now, brian and his team are shipping 2000 packs of crayons a week but could do a lot more. They are producing more efficiently using new ovens. Reporter once volunteers sort crayons by color, they no longer have to peel the paper off of each crayon. The hot oven air strains the wax as it melts so the papers fall off and get shredded and recycled so there is no waste. Executive director Jonathan Ziegler says brians vision is to expand beyond crayons to supply coloring books and art boxes in each hospital they serve. We are starting to get connected with each of the communities and we would like to have an opportunity to service more children. Reporter the nonprofit is raising funds to cover rising shipping cots then hopefully hire some of its regular volunteers. It makes me feel good for what we are doing but we need to do more. We need to get bigger and better and faster at everything we are doing. Reporter to do that, brian will do what he does best, think outside of the crayon box.
