The wildfires that began earlier in the week closer to being contained. This, after winds by Hurricane Dora on tuesday fanned the flames. According to the maui county mayor, one of those fires destroy the Historic Town of lahaina with residents there saying it, quote, looked like it was raining fire. President biden freeing up federal assistance by approving a disaster declaration for hawaii. Anyone who has lost a loved one, whose home has been damaged or destroyed will get help immediately. I have directed that we send support to these very firefighters and First Responders and Emergency Personnel who are working roundtheclock, risking their lives. Reporter the fema administrator is expected to arrive in hawaii today. Search and rescue teams with cadaver dogs are being brought in from california and washington state. Firefighters from oakland specializing in the type of work are also among the crews heading to the disaster zone. San Francisco Mayor london breed was in maui for a personal trip when this all happened. She has since left to a wahoo. Her office gives a statement saying, quote, the mayor was never in danger. This wildfire is devastating to witness and our thoughts are with the people of maui. In san jose, volunteers from the red cross will be flying out to maui to offer help to those affected by these wildfires. Our Shawn Chitnis caught up with some of the volunteers. Reporter a dozen people with the red cross based here in the bay area have already left for hawaii and now more on the way. They will get to maui but know that they need to be flexible and adapt to the changing needs of the situation. Both will assist government leaders who are on the ground covering the response of these wildfires. One aspect that is a unique challenge for these veterans at the red cross is the separation of the island but they are prepared for this assignment. The red cross is there on somebodys worst day of their life. We are trying to take care of those who have lost everything. Weve got to stabilize that situation for them and get them in a place that is safe. I got married there, in maui. I just had so many family memories. I just want to help them heal. Michelle tells us she has had a place on maui for 25 years. She does not know its condition after the fire. Her friends and lahaina are okay but their homes were destroyed. She is troubled by what many of the locals are facing there. She is close with people who own businesses and work on that part of the island. They have lost everything. That is why this mission is so popular for her. While this type of assignment can be overwhelming, they have some assurance in knowing that they are part of a larger team with the red cross responding together to this disaster. The fire blanketed several parts of the east bay in a thick black smoke. Oakland firefighters spent more than 24 hours battling the fire in a debris pile of aluminum, tin, iron and steel. The fire was burning at radius recycling, formally known as schnitzer steel. This is not the first incident at this recycling yard. Back in 2021, the plant paid more than 4 million to settle a lawsuit from Alameda County and the state claiming it allowed hazardouswaste to pollute nearby areas. Average temperatures are rising around the world. Californias average summer temperature is now 3 degrees hotter than it was a little more than a century ago. Add to that, the fact that our bodies have not evolved to handle extreme heat. The temperature inside gets up about 103, 104 and the actual membrane of your cellular structure begins to melt. The proteins that control the structure of those cells begin to unfold. Your body starts hemorrhaging inside of you. You literally melt from the inside. Reporter despite the worries and implications of a new climate, udell remains hopeful. I feel very optimistic about what we can do if we Pay Attention if we put our minds to it one of the reasons i feel that way is because i grew up in silicon valley. I grew up in a place where innovation mattered. Reporter what is the key to change . Quickly getting off fossil fuels and into electric vehicles, creating protections for outdoor workers and reimagining cities. We are building a new and different world.
