When his crew arrived to begin filming in march 1962, hitchcock gave an interview. He asked it was one of the most scariest films you have made. Is that true . He said i paid for it myself and i am terrified of losing all my money. Step one, follow along. Where did he go . Bodega bay. Where is that . Up the coast about 60 miles north of here. An hour and a half by freeway or two hours if you take the coast highway. Once in bodega, a right hand turn up bodega lane takes us to an Old School House hitchcock picked for a very spooky reason. Alfred hitchcock was a man who believed in ghosts. We know of at least one ghost. She walks down and goes and sits down add the birds gather. And then. If this werent bad enough, hitchcock makes one out of two, bodega and bodega bay which are seven miles apart. In one scene you are in bodega. And the camera switches. You see the coast. You see them running down what is Taylor Street in bodega bay. Hitchcocks granddaughter terry was at the shoot that day. The birds were attached to the kids hands. Most of them were fake. So when they ran, they would go like this and so the birds would look like theyre hitting their head. Dont they ever stop migrating . Another trick showed birds in the bodega skies that were filmed 60 miles away circling what else . The San Francisco dump. Where are they heading . Birds were graphed on the background whenever they needed them. Something like this happened in santa cruz last year. He heard there was real life attack and he wanted to put that into his film and he does. Thats right, sir. I recall it. That takes place in what was once a small diner. The restaurant was the center or heart of bodega bay in the movie. It still is except it is vastly expanded. Back in the day the owner didnt charge hitchcock a dime for shooting. All he wanted was his 15 minutes of fame. He gets a cameo appearance and also a line in the film. That happens in this sequence which took place right there. As melanie is attacked in a boat he comes and asks rod taylor what happened . What happened mitch. Gull hit her. A gull . Thats his big moment. In the end hitchcock didnt lose money. He ended up making five times as much as it cost to produce the film. He made one more thing. A lasting impression. Just ask the Tourist Bureau in bodega and bodega bay. Apparently 10,000 tourists come looking every year. 60 years after filming wrapped bodega is still very much for the birds. I did a Little Research on this. They trained 3,000 birds for this movie. Thats a lot. Did they have to join the sag . Would they be on strike today . So many questions. There was a golden globe for her performance. Alfred hitchcock was incredible during his time. Its cool to watch. Can you imagine if she hadnt won . I had birds in my hair. Give me the trophy. They did say it was the end of humanity. Thats what the bird were symbolizing. Great.
