Headquarters focused on a different aspect of robo taxi expansion. What it could mean for rideshare drivers across San Francisco. Heres jose martinez. Reporter im here at the intersection of bryant and tenth streets where these drivers gathered earlier today to basically send a message about their fear of ai taking over the jobs. As they were speaking, workers here at this cruise location started playing loud music to try to interrupt the rally. Its the sound of a popular mexican tv show called el chavo. Playing from the inside of this cruise location in soma while members of the alliance for independent workers were rallying outside. Behind this gate here they have a security post and they were choosing to be disruptive. Now these are immigrants, low income security workers, right . Minorities and so they were choosing the side of the corporation by playing circus music. They were playing rap music with foul language. Reporter its a frustrating experience for edward escobar, an east bay uber driver who is also the director of this alliance. He organized this protest during labor day to send a message about the fear of robo taxis taking their jobs. There isnt any dialogue happening. Its pretty much onesided. Its being dictated by the tech titans, waymo, which is google, and also General Motors cruise. Theyre pretty much dictating the terms and the cpuc is allowing that to happen. Reporter but cruise says the company is doing its part by partnering with local labor unions. In a statement the condition said cruise was proud to sign Industry First jobs agreements with local labor, ibew local 6 and seiu local 87 whose workers will install chargers and support our facilities across San Francisco. Cruise also highlighted that the construction of a major ev charging facility on cesar chavez street was conducted by 100 bay area union labor representing over 100 jobs. Edward tells me this is not enough. The real concern is the future of drivers like him. Youre looking at automation, selfdriving technology ushering in the new age of ai and youre looking at permanent displacement of many workers. If youre looking at transport workers alone in the state of california, uc berkeley had a study that said approximately 600,000 plus transport workers in california alone were going to be displaced. Reporter this protest happened just two weeks after the California PublicUtilities Commission approved the expansion of cruise and waymo robo taxi Service Despite the rejection from the Fire Department citing safety concerns. Edward tells me hell continue leading this fight until these companies allow them to be part of this conversation. In the east bay thousands of healthcare workers rallied in oakland this morning. The unions there are negotiating contracts with kaiser and prime healthcare. The workers say staffing issues have caused real problems when it comes to taking care of patients. The morale for our healthcare heroes as we were once being called is very low because were being ignored. Our requests for extra care to get to our patients is being ignored in the form of staff is being ignored. Were not being respected. We are waiting for a response from prime healthcare. Kaiser says it continues to bargain in good faith. In a statement Kaiser Permanente wrote, this year the unions leadership is seeking a Single National wage increase, the same increase for everyone. However, this would not reflect market labor costs and would prevent us from addressing fair market wages. Some healthcare workers rallying for similar reasons down in los angeles were arrested. Police arrested about two dozen demonstrators for civil disobediences disobedience for blocking traffic after the rally time had expired. A stretch of westbound 80 is oni up 12 hours early. It was closed all weekend for Major Construction between the 780 interchange in vallejo and highway 4 in hercules. It was supposed to reopen by 5 00 a. M. Tomorrow. Labor day weekend travelers are making their way home now. Aaa estimated 80 of people who traveled drove. Airports have been really, really busy. The tsa says this is the busiest Summer Travel period ever recorded. Here in the bay area if you stuck around, you noticed something a little different for this labor day weekend. It was cooler, significantly, right . Yeah. Kind of wet, yes, some drizzle here and there saturday and sunday. Today we got back to more of a typical september pattern without any extreme heat. This is what it looks like from Treasure Island towards downtown San Francisco. The fog will push back across the bay as we head through tonight, but temperatures returned closer to average. Currently were starting to retreat from warm temperatures inland, still 82 degrees in santa rosa, fairfield, 70s inland with 60s around the bay, just above 60 degrees along the coast of half moon bay. Highs tomorrow almost exactly normal. For september 5th that means low to mid70s around the bay, mostly 80s inland. Theres a more substantial warmup towards the tail end of the forecast. Well look at that coming up. Some other stories around the bay, a woman was shot near lake merritt this afternoon on madison street just before 12 30. People nearby heard it happen. Loud firecrackers like a string of it when you light off a string of firecrackers and then i saw a woman down on the ground, a bunch of people going to her aid and assistance, including my neighbors who went out and helped her. Police say the woman who was shot there today was not the target. At last check she was in critical condition, no word whether anyone has been arrested so far. In San Jose Police say a teenager in a stolen suv hit and killed a pedestrian before crashing into a tree. This happened yesterday around 3 20 a. M. On winchester boulevard near walgrove way. Police havent said what caused the teen to veer off onto the sidewalk and they arent releasing the victims name or the drivers name. They said the teen was arrested and taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. In Sacramento San Joaquin Delta crews are racing to contain oil and fuel leaking from a submerged tugboat. This leak is happening in a protected wildlife area around empire tract. They say the spill doesnt seem to have impacted wildlife. This was a historic tugboat that was being restored and at some point something happened where it took on water and ended up underwater. While they are trying to clean this up and pull the boat out, other boaters are asked to avoid the area. The city of vallejo is making a name for itself when it comes to real estate. A recent study shows it leads the nation when it comes to home selling for overasking. Reporter Dominic Garcia talked to a local realtor about why. Reporter if you asked tim heimstra how the Real Estate Market is doing, he is the owner of Napa River Realty and wasnt surprised by a study shows homes in vallejo are sold over list price more often than any other place in the u. S. Were not in an earthquake zone, flood zone or fire zone. We have two San Francisco ferry terminals. Weve got about 1 billion in the pipeline of new infrastructure coming in. Reporter that means people pouring into vallejo either from out of state or other highpriced parts of california. Pockets here. People are getting just a great value. You can get a lot of home for the money and people are seeing the opportunities of what they can do here. I put it on the market for 680. I sold it for 723. 50 people showed up at my open house. Reporter tim says issues in some surrounding areas have people looking for a change of scenery. San francisco, i think people are politics aside, i think theyre disappointed with so many things that have happened, with nordstrom closing, the highway to crime, et cetera. Theyre looking for new areas in which to get involved. Reporter tim has lived in the area for decades and has seen how its changed and with this new attention hes happy to share the citys story. I dont know. You can probably tell im a big fan of vallejo. As of late San Francisco ranked second in that very same study. Homes in the city are selling for over 31,000 above asking. San jose was fourth behind rochester, new york. It looks like florida is much more of a buyers market. Key west came in dead last with homes selling for 44,000 below asking. Still ahead here at 6 00, the death of Jimmy Buffett hitting hard for an entire generation of music lovers. Im numb. Its very surreal to me. The former front man of the san josebased rock band smashmouth has died. Steve harwells representative said he died after entering hospice care. Youll probably remember that smashmouth had two number one singles, walkin on the sun and allstar, major, major chart topping hits and harwell was a south bay native. He had long suffered from Heart Disease and he had also grappled with some other health issues. He was 56 years old. And millions of fans are mourning the passing of legendary singer Jimmy Buffett. He died saturday from a rare form of cancer called merkel cell cancer. Along with all of the sadness that fans are feeling certainly, there is so much appreciation for the gift he gave people with his tales from margaritaville. Heres john ramos. Reporter people who are unfamiliar with Jimmy Buffett may wonder why his passing is such a gut punch to his fans, but for millions of people, for an entire generation, his music has served as a kind of navigational beacon to living a happy life. Perhaps its fitting that Jimmy Buffett should die at the beginning of a threeday weekend. It gives people an extra day off to party, but linda doesnt feel much like partying. Im numb. Its very surreal to me. Its shocking that im having this reaction for somebody ive never met. People knew that it was not normal for this man to pass and that this reaction, i dont think anybody expected the reaction that were all having. Reporter to love the music is to love the man and linda fell hard, becoming a member of a local chapter of the parrotheads in paradise fan club. Shes attended more than 100 of jimmys concerts, including his final big one in san diego just this may. Jimmy got on stage and he was a little out of breath, but he was having fun and you could see it. That made us people like oh, hes going to be okay. Thats the shocking part of it. Reporter jimmy succumbed to a deadly form of skin cancer. Maybe if he had spent his life in an Office Rather than out in the sun, he might still be living, but he wouldnt have had the same life and it was how he lived life that became an inspiration to millions of hard working people who dreamed of calling in sick and hopping on a sailboat. Cbs Commentator Bill flanagan was a close friend and said it was no act. I dont think i ever knew anyone with more positive life force even when he was in treatment for cancer this last year. Jimmy would come out of the hospital and instead of resting like he was supposed to, he would jump on one of his planes and fly across the country to play a show. Reporter in 1983 jimmy told a very young David Letterman he wrote his hit come monday about waiting to play a show in San Francisco on labor day weekend. This is a song that kept me from killing myself in the Howard Johnsons in marin county. I was in a Howard Johnson and living there. It was awful. I wrote the song and it hit and the rest is history. The songs that he writes about being with friends and the songs he writes about slowing down and enjoying the moment and the songs he writes about growing old, theyre songs that hit us that way that when the world goes wrong, theres always a Jimmy Buffett song that just reporter thats why hell be so missed. He told us it was okay to play hooky from work to go have fun and even if we knew we couldnt, we knew he was out there doing it for us. That was john ramos reporting. Despite never having had a number one album, Jimmy Buffett had been one of the most popular touring musicians in the world. His biggest single didnt come until 2003 with his cameo appearance on Alan Jacksons its 5 00 somewhere. Authorities in santa rosa tracked down a suspect who pointed a high powered life at a sheriffs helicopter which as we know can be incredibly dangerous. This happened as police were flying over what looked like a sideshow in the area and the suspect blinded the helicopter crew for several seconds, which is why lasers are so dangerous in situations like this. Deputies did their work, tracked the laser back to a 59yearold man who they say also had cocaine on him. A group of firefighters from alameda is back in the bay area after spending two weeks fighting some pretty huge wildfires up near the oregon border. The four firefighters were sent to help with the smith river complex fire. The smith river complex fire is made up of about a dozen smaller fires that were sparked by lightning nearly three weeks ago. Since then it has grown to more than 85,000 acres. Its only 19 contained right now. In Siskiyou County the happy camp fire has burned more than 28,000 acres and in humboldt county two other lightning complex fires have burned a combined 16,000 acres. Paul heggen joining us now. Youve been talking about these fires, the threat that cloudtoground lightning poses, you do mention when we see moisture with that, when we see some rain, it can be really, really helpful. Right. We had thunderstorms in Northern California over the weekend and late last week and they actually produced rain. Hopefully that rainfall was assisting the fire crews burning up north. Theyre not producing nearly the volume of smoke as even a few days ago. I remember the air was unhealthy in some parts of the bay area. Last wednesday and thursday it wasnt great. It got better thursday night. Its going to stay pretty good the next several days. Lets look at what you need to know heading into the abbreviated workweek, looking down towards santa clara a nice start, calm conditions. Good air quality continues through the week with highs back to almost normal tuesday and thats where theyll stay through friday, a little warmup through the weekend. Well look at that with the tenday temperature outlook for livermore, one spot that has more ups and downs, youll be 2 degrees on either side of average into the weekend on saturday, a little warmup sunday and monday, but dropping back down the other side of the roller coaster and like every heatwave weve seen this year, it wont last long. A couple days of lot weather inland and back to near or slightly below average temperatures. Good air quality for most of the bay area, nice to see these green dots on the air quality map. This is likely where well stay the rest of the workweek, all green across the bay area through the rest of the week into the weekend. Those fires up north are not producing nearly the volume of smoke they were even a week ago. Looking to the west seeing that fog shrouding sutro tower, spreading away from the coast later tonight, 60s and 70s in most locations, 82 degrees in santa rosa, but inland temperatures are still a couple degrees below normal today, back to almost exactly average tomorrow. The fog will spread into the inland valleys to begin the day tuesday where it does make its way inland, not lasting long backing up towards the coast late morning. I think well see the fog pull a little ways away from the coast midday and afternoon, sunshine breaking through for coastal parts of the bay area. Temperatures tonight 50s across the board, comfortable to begin the day tuesday as we return to near average temperatures. Inland pups may want to walk earlier in the day. We have peewee here who was dressed up in rain gear for the weekend, but no such concerns tomorrow or the next several days. Sausalito should see temperatures top out in the upper 60s tomorrow afternoon. Highs tomorrow, where theyre supposed to be on the 5th of september, 60s along the coast, 70s around the bay, 80s down the peninsula and mostly 80s inland. In the trivalley and delta only topping out the upper half of the 80s. More of a warmup towards the tail end of the sevenday forecast. By sunday and monday well be a few degrees above average, mid70s in San Francisco, near 80 for oakland, inland spots back to the low 90s in the north bay valleys, upper 80s around san jose sunday and monday. This is a twoday hot spell before our temperatures drop back off by next tuesday and wednesday and even the hottest temperatures only get into the mid90s. Were not talking about triple digit heat, no records in jeopardy. We can handle this in late summer, a little over two weeks away from the first day of fall. It wont feel like fall anytime soon, but at least it wont be extremely hot. Thank you, paul. Time for a look at whats ahead on the cbs evening news. Lets get over to Major Garrett.
