Reporter once this saltmarsh has found a new chance to survive, even thrive as the planet warms and sea levels rise. What we have done here is build tomorrows marsh. This marsh will survive much longer than most of the rest of the marshes in our system. Scientists monique fountain and Christine Watson are part of a Ground Breaking effort to restore the marsh. We are pioneering this approach in california of building such a high marsh, forward thinking. In the past century, california has lost more than 90 of its salt marshes. Climate change with its melting glaciers and warmer oceans promise to endanger the rest. Those that remain here are really low. With just a little bit of sea level rise, they will drown. It is a really rare habitat we dont want to lose. Decades ago, the marsh was badly damaged, causing it to sink. This project wants to elevate it with lots of dirt. We have built it up so high at the line of the king tides where it only gets tidily inundated on the very highest tides of every yearend that means it will be resilient for tomorrow and be ready to face quite a bit of sea level rise. Sober, the project has moved roughly half 1 million cubic yards of soil. Most of the dirt comes from nearby hillsides where it is scooped up and moved by a fleet of trucks. The caravan to the restoration site where the dirt is dumped, tractors then take the dirt and spread it, building up the marsh. It is a living laboratory. We had a clean slate when the soil was moved in. We can learn about how marshes are developing. It is a unique opportunity. Reporter the project also involves revegetate in the higher plane with thousands of plants that grow in the salt marshes, including pickle weed. We have seen hundreds of thousands of pickle weed settling and sprouting in our new marsh. Reporter the hope, that these plans will establish roots, stabilize soil, filter water, even sequester carbon. This is what i am interested in and passionate about.
