Then come on down to madame caucasias wax museum and see all your favorite celebrities like youve never seen them before. The rock. Lebron james, prince, oprah winfrey, and frederick douglass. People magazine says what . . . . . Us weekly says why . . . . . And Tucker Carlson said i loved it announcer its the late show with Stephen Colbert tonight. Speaker of the who . First, stephen welcomes talking heads and mae martin. Featuring louis cato and the late show band. And now, live on tape from the ed sullivan theater in new york city, its Stephen Colbert [cheers and applause] stephen beautiful. Perfect. Hello, my friends. You are my friends. Thanks, everybody. [cheering] hello. Hello thank you, ladies and gentlemen lovely. [audience chanting] Stephen Stephen Stephen Stephen there you go. I like it. Happy wednesday. We are going to get back there. One piece at a time. Hey, everybody thank you very much. Welcome in here, out there, all around the world. Welcome to the late show. Im your host, Stephen Colbert. Id like to start off with some great news for fans of constitutional democracy. The republicans have picked a new speaker of the house. Our Long National nightmare is finally different. Now, tonights guests on the show are talking heads, so. [cheering] totally agree. So in honor of the g. O. P. Spending the last three weeks burnin down the house, im naming tonights congressional coverage psycho killers. Theyre dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb heres the moment weve all been waiting for. Americas new speaker of the house is louisiana congressman mike johnson, seen here ogling the photographers crotch. His name is mike johnson. Mike johnson. Mike johnson, that is a name. Hes the most genericsounding congressional leader since the election of speaker James Kirkland brand. Johnson was just elected this afternoon, getting votes from all 220 republicans. Finally, a man who appeals to all factions of the Republican Party the maga faithful, the social conservatives, the white nationalists, and the horny beetlejuice goblins. [chees and applause] johnson is now secondinline to the presidency, prompting news outlets to triumphantly proclaim, who is representative mike johnson . Who is mike johnson . Who is speaker nominee mike johnson . And 5 secrets to reduce belly fat. Also, who the hell is mike johnson . So hes a little innocuous. Hes just another boring white guy in a suit with glasses. Wait a second, jimmy. Put him up again. Hold on. Hold on a second. [cheering] [mouthing words] am i mike johnson . God, i hope not. The fact that no one knows who he is might be johnsons greatest strength. Because apparently, there doesnt appear to be anyone who hates johnson enough to sabotage his rise. You know what they say about mike johnson, to know him is to. Meh. But dont let his blandness fool you. Johnson is not only an election denier, he played a leading role in the effort to overturn the 2020 election. [boos] johnson has some other extreme views. In newspaper editorials, johnson has called homosexuality an inherently unnatural and dangerous lifestyle it would possibly destroy the democratic system, adding and destroying the entire democratic system is my job. To do know the 2020 election was rigged by gender fluid space lasers . After the vote, House Republicans held a big selfcongratulation festival on the steps of the capitol. Thats not normal. They celebrated their momentous achievement of having a leader. Its the sort of ceremony thats usually celebrating the passage of medicare or ending the war. Instead, this is announcing we have found the key to the executive washroom. By the way, the little soapy thing is empty. But we will fill it i say we are out of towels. One of the many guys who did not get the gig, steve scalise, took the mic to make the official introduction of the 56th speaker of the house. Though he got some of the details wrong. It is my great privilege to introduce the 45th speaker of the house. Stephen 45th speaker . You mean John William Mccormack . Hes been dead for 40 years its a zombie speaker get out of there, steve then, the man of the hour stepped up to the podium and gave a speech that historians will describe as having occurred. He also spoke last night after securing the nomination, and called upon the assembled press and the American People to forget the last three weeks. We want to thank all the press for waiting. Its been quite a process. Democracy is messy sometimes but it is our system. Stephen there it is. A guy who wanted to throw out our votes lecturing america on what democracy is. And america has this response. Keep my democracys name out your [bleep] mouth stephen true story. Johnson also assured america the newly united g. O. P. Is up to the task. The world is on fire. You are going to see this group looking working like a welloiled machine. Stephen to recap, the world is on fire and we are covered in oil. We could not be more flammable theres an ocean of problems to solve. Lets fill our pockets with rocks and walk slowly into the waves oh [applause] heres something interesting. Yesterday we learned that trumps last chief of staff, mark meadows, may be flipping. On the expresident. Because, according to abc news, he has been granted immunity in the january 6th case and has testified to prosecutors that, after the 2020 election, he repeatedly told trump that the allegations of significant voting fraud were baseless. And he reportedly told investigators what trump said to him in december of 2020, after the Supreme Court denied his last lawsuit. Trump told meadows, then thats the end. So thats it. The kind of wistful words he usually only utters when he reaches the last nugget. So thats it. Adios, little friend. Rest in 20piece. I will remember you when this news about meadows broke, trump took it all in stride by threatening meadows to keep his mouth shut. Truthing, i dont think mark meadows would lie about the rigged and stollen 2020 president ial election merely for getting immunity against prosecution persecution some people would make that deal, but they are weaklings and cowards, and so bad for the future our failing nation. I dont think that mark meadows is one of them, but who really knows . Okay, thats not very subtle witness intimidation. Who really knows . I mean, who knows if the human body can survive without kneecaps . The answer, the answer may surprise mark. By the way, meadows now denies abcs report that he flipped. His denial is all in his new book i am terrified. We got a great show for you tonight. My guests are talking heads and comedian mae martin. Announcer the late show with Stephen Colbert sponsored by oralb. [cheers and applause] stephen hey, everybody welcome back. Welcome back. Ladies and gentlemen, in just a few minutes, a wonderful comedian will be out here, mae martin. Stick around for them. But right now, my guests tonight are rock n roll hall of famers were here to celebrate the 40th anniversary of perhaps the greatest concert film of all time, stop making sense. Burning down the house stephen please welcome to the late show. Talking heads david byrne, jerry harrison, chris frantz, and tina weymouth. Thank you. Thank you so much. Right this way. Right this way. Hey, jerry. Hey, david. [cheers and applause] lovely. Well, listen. Thank you all. Thank you all for being here. Ill just get straight to it. I dont even know how to be cool about this because i want to ask you, first off, what it was like to hit as a band. cause a lot of people work hard to find their sound hoping that an audience is going to appreciate it but you had this extraordinary exclusion onto the scene in 1977, your first album, talking heads 77. Sex pistols, meat loaf, cheap trick, foreigner, Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel and talking heads 77. What was it like to fire on the scene . I will say one more thing. You will eventually be allowed to talk. I was in my sophomore year of college, that summer. That spring, stop making sense comes out. There was no other band for the entire year for me or my friends. I am levitating talking to nav right now. These people know this story. I had tickets to see you at uva in the fall of 1983 in october. I had a paper due the next day for my shakespeare class and i did the paper instead. Tina, how big of a mistake did i make . Tina i think you did great, stephen. Because i think all the kids were really high that night. And it wouldve been impossible to write your paper afterwards. Stephen okay, good. Well tell me what that first year was like when your album hits in 1977. Did you feel that you would made an impression . Tina we got gobs a lot. Stephen what does gob mean . Driving around in my station reagan. My parents station reagan, a Ford Country Squire with the fake wood. When our first album came out we were so excited and we were very pleased by the critical reception we had. We were still playing to 50 people, may be hundred people. In most of the cities we went to in the station wagon. We would play shopping malls that were like empty shopping malls. We would play pizza parlors. You remember the show in pittsburgh . We played a pizza parlor. Their opening act was a fire eater. We did two sets and so did he. But during our first set, he got drunk. We were just like oh, no. Oh, no. This is not good. I also remember we played beefsteak charlies in yonkers. Its not there anymore. The worst part about it, jerry and i were dressed in the same outfits as the waiters. Stephen so you guys, so david and chris and tina, you guys were all students at Rhode Island School of design, right . How does the band come together . Everybody assume there has probably got a vms. How did the three of you get together . Surprisingly there werent a lot of bands. Which is why we formed one. I had this idea we should form a band to entertain our friends and i met david and he was into that idea. And some other friends joined in and we were a cover band. The sole purpose was to entertain our friends, you know. Stephen when did it develop beyond that . I started writing some songs for that band. Stephen what coverage were you doing . We did a whole eclectic mix. We did Smokey Robinson and the miracles. We did the early who, like i cant explain. We did the velvet underground. We did paul revere and the raiders. Stephen are there recordings of those, view doing those covers . Chris i wish. I heard somebody had a recording that they made but that person has not come forward. Tina stephen, i was not in that band. Everybody who wasnt in that band stood in another corner of the room because it was so loud. Stephen really . Tina it was just so paiful. [laughter] stephen and you are an honest critic and they appreciated that. Jerry, you are with the modern lovers. [applause] was this the shes crack that part . Jerry shes crack, code runner. Stephen wives you want to be part of this . Jerry the modern lovers had broken up and i was sort of in this limbo. I was just entering architecture school. I said well, i dont think im going to be in a rock band and then i met the talking heads and they asked me to join. They actually allowed me to finish the first semester because i said my parents will kill me if i dont, if i cant go back. So anyway. So i joined in january of 77 but we did a number of shows, and they braved i had this house that i had rebuilt in ipswich massachusetts and we rehearsed and kind of just after a blizzard in this freezing cabin to go down and play at the ratskellar in boston. Stephen tina, when did you join . If you werent originally in the band, when that change . Tina well, they really needed a bass player and nobody would join them. They asked debbie harry to sing with them and she said i already have a band but you can buy me a drink. So i just loved them. I just thought oh, god. These guys. They are so amazing and they are so creative. And we had a chemistry. It was very special. And so i braved it, even though it wasnt the right thing to do probably. But i thought, ill just get them going, you know. Stephen you guys, rock n roll band. For lack of a better words were you party years . Was it that rock n roll lifestyle . That would be yes. [laughter] stephen the chair would like to recognize the gentleman from talking heads and ask him to elaborate on his answer. Chris i probably shouldnt elaborate any further, but the thing was we were really good at what they call maintaining, so nobody knew. Stephen or at least you didnt think anybody knew. Thats the trick of maintaining. Chris somebody said, the drummer, hes always smiling. Our soundman said thats cause hes full of drugs. [laughter] stephen david, how did you feel about the term art rock . People described talking heads as art rock. Speedily kind of war but i sort of realized it was not meant as a compliment. Stephen what did you think it was implying . David it implied that we were snooty elites who didnt mean what we were doing. It was just a art project. We were also called punk roc rockers. We didnt feel like we liked a lot of those bands are that we fit in with that genre. Stephen you are playing cbgbs. Was that a hard thing to break into . Did you have to know somebody . We were very fortunate. We arrived in new york in the autumn of 74 right around this time of year. The first person i went to visit was another alarm, painter. David had been camping out in his loft on bond street. And jamie said to me chris, i know youre interested in music. Theres this bar across the street or something is going on. I can tell somethings going on. Its called cbgbs. You should check it out there that night i went because we were looking for a place that would be like the cavern club was to the beatles or the hotel in richmond outside of london was to the stones, place, like an incubator. I went. Nobody was playing. Nothing was happening. But there was this one guy shooting pool and he said to me, in a very heavy spanish accent, nothing going on tonight, man. But come back on the weekend. The remotes will be here. I thought oh, cool, a spanish band called the ramones. I went to see the ramons. It was unbelievable. Did you come too, david . This was in the early days when they would stop in the middle of a song and argue with each other. Stephen we have to take a quick break but stick around. Well be right back with more talking heads, everybody. Tina wayman, chris vance, jerry harrison, and david byrne. [applause] stephen stop making sense is coming up on its 40th anniversary. 824 has really released it and its in theaters now. David, how did this come about . The company that had the distribution rights the contract ran out. The rights reverted to us. Stephen did you get back together to watch it . How did this come about where you are out here essentially promoting it . David we took advantage of the fact that we owned it and said okay, is there a film company they would like to put this out properly now . Luckily that are a 24 said yes, wed like to put it out. In theaters, not just dump it back onto streaming, wed like to really do sound mix and get a print from the negative and make it look as good as it can. Stephen jerry, i understand you are involved in the remastering. What was that like . Jerry we remixed it more than remastering because nowadays there are these multichannel speaker systems in theaters and so it actually was more difficult than you would think because we had to find everything and then things, you would play it and it would go out of sync at some point. But eventually we did find the negative amazingly. It was in a warehouse in kansas that mgm has, which had nothing to do with the film. So it was really good that we started early on i worked with a wonderful mixer who worked on really the original album of stop making sense, et thorn grin. Then we went back to the same film studio home which had been called Warner Hollywood and before that now the lot, there was symmetry back to 84. Stephen what was it like to see this film and watch you guys perform 40 years later on in imax. Chris, you first. What were the emotions . Chris well, its a beautiful movie. And my wife is in it. What a babe. [cheers and applause] when i look at it, i just think chris, you did the right thing. [laughter] stephen there is an Incredible Group on stage. Its amazing. How did this group come together, david . David im going to give that to jerry. Jerry it started with the tour where he had played so many parts. We cant quite tour and play all of this at the same time. Reaction had the opportunity because we were playing in central park and a festival in canada near toronto. We go, lets do an experiment and lets try having a bigger band. Ive been kind of hanging around in new york and i have met bernie i had produced nona hendrix and i was around with this guy, and one afternoon i said i will go out and hire some people. Adrian, i called him and i called buster. Bill and bernie and theyll go, sure, well do this. Came back to the studio. The best band in the world. I cant believe it. Then adrian went off to join king crimson we found alex weir sort of through quincy jones i think. And then we just kept doing it. We werent sure we were going to continue but once we were on stage with the whole band, we were like, this is too much fun. Too funky. Weve got to keep doing this. Stephen i just found this out recently and i cant believe i didnt know this. The ed sullivan building is familiar to yall. What did you do here in this building . What did you record here . We recorded and mixed some of our most loves songs. We did remain in light, the vocals and some overdubs. Stephen where in the building . I want to go build a small shrine. Chris sigma sound. I think it was on the eighth and ninth floor, it was two floors. We worked on remain in light. We worked on speaking in tongues, burning down the house. And we worked on little creatures. True stories. Some of naked. It was, you know, the stones were here. The beatles were here. So were we. [cheering] stephen i tell you. I tell you one quick story about sort of my devotion to talking heads. You guys are the most dominant man for me when im in college. I have the most time to listen to the most music. My senior year, scenery, having graduate, we go to the jersey shore, means of friends and we stop in philly and we stay at a friends of a friends house talking hands and the parents of the kids who were friends of the friends whose house we were in ghost oh, you know the burning down the house houses around here and its from the video where the fe outside of house and youre saying watch out. Theres been some fiction in the band but i dont want to stir the pot. Is it water under the bridge or do you still need to wear galoshes around each other . Chris any band thats been together a long time its had twists and turns and ups and downs, we have all said things and weve all may be done things that the others didnt approve of. But i think we love each other and we made such great music together. And this movie, i mean, damn, this movie is so good that we all agree weve got to get together and protect our legacy, which is so great. [cheering] stephen i legally have to ask if theres any possibility protecting your leacy by playing together again. [cheers and applause] and i will point out, i will point out that there are guitars and keyboards and drums right over there. [cheering] if you. Its called sap, and there are trees all around you on stage. You brought a forest on stage. Why was it important for you to perform in the woods . Mae i am very canadian to my core. Stephen and you all live in the woods. Mae we live in the woods. I feel like its part of my soul. I went to summer camp and would tell lies by the fireside, i would tell stories, embellish stories about myself. Also it was the first time id been charge of a budget. And i thought, blow it on trees, stephen either that or craft services. Mae i didnt realize he was taken out of my fee. Anyway. Stephen did you really start doing stand up when you are 13 . Mae yes. Mae my family is very funny and they are big comedy fans. My dad is into british comedy. Hes british. And my mom, shes a very adventurous spirit. She will make announcements, like i think you should move to iceland. Or like when i was ten. Stephen real announcements . We really should move to iceland . Or just afternoon daydreams . Mae i think they feel very real to her in the moment. She will be like we need to get a goat, pet goats. A few years ago i went home for christmas and she was like i have an announcement. Im going to get a tattoo. We were like oh, cool. She said she was going to get an elven writing from lord of the rings. One ring to rule them all. Around her entire torso. I was like, i didnt even know that she likes lord of the rings that march. Stephen she gets the entire thing on her torso, shall disappear. Mae exactly. She didnt understand the risks. Stephen i like your mom. Big fan. Mae my whole family. Big fan. Stephen how long did you do it before you went, i might be able to do this, as opposed to this is something i do. He didnt tell my brother about a pretty sickly simply ran down. He went to the library and took out greys anatomy he flipped it open. Flipped open and close didnt want whack and broke the system. Thats how you do it. Mae should we do it now . Stephen sure. You learned shiatsu but you never action practice.
