Reporting from washington, i am nada tawfik. Iran says it has seized a britishflagged ship i strait of hormuz, escalating tensions further. A major heat wave has dissented has descended on large parts of the United States. Rotreme temperatures could deadly, and many are seeking relief. 50 years after apollo 11 landed on the moon, celebrations to mark the anniversary are underway, and it is inspiring the next generation. B i want an astronaut one day. You want to go to the moon . Yes. You think you will ever get there . I dont know. Nada for those watching on pbso and around the, welcome to world news america. Tonight iran reported that it is has captured a British Oil Tanker in the strait of hormuz. This then amparo the stena impero was bound for siadi arhen the owners say they lost contact with the vessel. There are 23 personnel on board, but no british citizens among them. It comes after an iranian vessel was captured earlier this month a brme ago i spoke to the u. S the former u. S spokesperson at the u. N. Could this lead to a broader asin the strait of hormuz . The iranians are responding to an act that isnt really comparable. They are responding to british seizure of an iranian allegedlyat wa attempting to smuggle oil to syria off the goes of gibraltar. That was related to enforcing sanctionsrelated laws of the rerisdiction. That is what they oing there. Iran was in violation of those laws. But since that point, iran had threatened tseize british whiles, they attempted back. They were unsuccessful, and now this time they were successful. The way the iranians are viewin it retaliation for the british seizure of the ship, but really, it is incomparable. You are comparing apples tan s. One side is enforcing the law of the jurisdiction andhe other side is merely pursuing a provocative measure. Nada sure, and the strait of hormuz is strategically important. Iran is leveraging that because the crippling sanctions that the u. S. Has imposed. Is that a strategy that could work . Hagar at the end of the day, iran is trying to gain leverage. That is the best point of leverage. Those shipping lanes are where 20 percent of the worlds oil goes through. Ve it is big leverage point for them. They are playing a little bit with fire at the end of the day. There are reports that this is developing with apparently a second ship seized and apparently in exchange of military fire. Things are going to get even more tense. Ive been saying for a while that i expected to see more provocative measures on both sides sanctions on the u. S. Sideprovocative measures on the strait of hormuz, drones haveow been shoton both ends. Tensions are going to get really high. I dont see this go fullscale war, though. I just see things getting so tense and dangerous that ultimately both sides toe forced he table. Nada is there a risk that thisa doesto a broader clash in the strait of hormuz and tensions escalating too far to where diplomacy is not an option anymor hagar no, i certainly see tensions causing or leading to unwanted circumstances that envelope other partners inadvertently. What i mean by that is iran t present acro middle east region. They are present through hezbollah in lebanon, they are in iraq, they are in yemen, and elsewhere. Globally the United States, the u. K. , European Partners have interests and assets everywhere that could be at risk because of irans presence in the middle east, and more tensions in that strait. I dont see diplomacy going up going t o table and the reason for that is i see the tone from the u. S. Administration changing a little bit. Secretary of state pompeo today said that iran needs to come to the table. Well, that statement comes only a fe trump said they are far off from diplomacy negotiation. It was not even in the cards. That means the narrative is shifting a little bi the iranians say they need sanctions really to come to the table and that is unrealistic. What would be realistic is bothe o the table as sanctions relief is offered during negotiations, as happened under obama. Nada all right, thank you so much for that. Hagar thanks for having me. Nada it was 50 years ago tonight that america was on the eve of apollo 11 touching down on the moon and u. S. Astronauts becoming the first to set foot there. All we there have be events to rk the anniversary and a look back at the space race which led to the new frontier. Here in washington, that has included a massive display, which crowds are turning out to see. The bbcs nick bryant one along. Went along. Nick in a week that haste highlithe deep divisions in washington and america, a gigantic reminder of a unifying national omission. Oj apollo 11 ted on the National Monument for this back to the future celebration. At a grand level, coming together of generations. E i want to astronaut one day. Nick you want to go to the moon . Yes. Nick you think you will ever get there . I dont know. It has been pretty cool to see it. See it through youtube, so to be here, it is brandnew to me. It is just as exciting as when we didfi it tht time. It was beyond remarkable. Almost the type of thing you didnt think uld come to be. Liftoff. We have liftoff. Nick co as always been an essential part of the american spirit. Sobut it was conquering thet union that made the space race such an Urgent National priority. In those cold war years, soviet cosmonauts outpaced american astronauts. Mo th mission was about a global ideological battle. The space race was all about the cold war. The whole reason of the race to the moon was tbeat the soviets and prove that the western capitalistr model was betan the soviet model. Iothat was a s issue in the early 1960s. The u. S. Beats the soviets to the moon in 1969, it tremendously undercuts the legitimacy of the soviet union rninly and externally, and i think contributes to the collapse of the soviet union years later. Nick taking the Stars Stripes to the moon was surprisingly something of an afterthought. It was purchased frorea local hardhop. And although the moon mission was launched by john f. Kennedy, it was his onetime rival Richard Nixon who was president at the time. Pres. Nixon for every americans thiso be the proudest day of our lives. Nick the moon landing came at the end of a tumultuous decade. The 1960s brought the struggle for black equality, the vietnam war, the assassination of the kennedy brothers and dr. Martin luther king. Here finally was a moment that transcended national strife. There has been a wave of spaceagnostalgia, marking a glorious, nearhypnotic moment when America First had a veryff ent connotation. Nick bryant, bbc news, washington. Nada today at the white house, donald trump posted Michael Collins and buzz aldrin, the two living astronauts from t apollo 11 mission, and touted the moon landing as one of the. Greatest achievements ev for more on the past and present of Space Exploration, i was joined from houston by a nasa engineer. I can imagine it has been quite a week for you and others at nasa. What has it meant to you to mark this occasion . This has been a wonderful week. Heryone who has been involved with the program h a little chance to celebrate, everything from the parades, the cars, the people, the reopening of Mission Controloom, the old fcr, called the Flight Control room. It has been a celebration. A lot of us, eyes forward. Nada i heard the old missionnt l room was actually refurbished to look just like it did that day 50 years ago, down to the coffee cups, the cigarees. What would happen going on in Mission Control today 50 years ago just the day before the moon landing . S well, so i years old o the time, but i have been fortunate enoughpport over 50 launches as part of the shuttle program, and the programs are evolutionary, so acat would probably happen in the day is pretty much a similar to what happened during the shuttle, where three days before liftoff, the press starts where basically you have that is as thick as an oldstyle phone book and you just start working the procedures one step at a time. There is literally hundreds of engineerboth in houston and in florida preparing for the launch. Most of the activity in houston prior to launch is preparation, planning, and oversight. Launch activities in florida get more and more furious. Ou three days out people start coming in, ground systems get set up, then as the crewme in and gets prepared, more and more activity, and after about 3. 5 days, we have liftoff. The firing room in kennedy spaco center han control to houston right about when the rocket clears the tower. That is when houston takes over. Its when starts. Ion actually nada give us a sense of what 0 years ofthe next Space Exploration will look like. Roland it has been fits and starts. It has been diffult. We have shown how difficult it is and also shown how successful we are at is, and doing Something Like that, it is difficult to always keep the publics eye on it. E many of us work behind scenes, and these programs are generational in duration, but the funding is unfortunately on an annual basis. It is here today, gone tomorrow, and quite often it is fits and starts. Most of us wish it was different, but that is the kind of the constraints we have to live with. Nada well, thank you very much for joining us. Roland ok, thank you. Nada in other news from around the world, a stros earthquake shaken the greek capital, athens, knocking out power in parts of the city. Phone networks were also affected. The epicenter of the 5 magnitude quake was 20 kilometers northwest of athens. R e were no reports of serious injuries, but the fire service had to rescue a number of people cap in elevators. The Dutch Supreme Court has held a ruling that the netherlands was partly to blame 00 muslimths of 380,0 men killed in the massacre in 70 set in the bosnian war. Aid agencies are calling on the world to speed up their response to the ebola emergency in the democratic republiof the congo. More than 1600 people have already died there, and the worlhealth organization has declared an International Public health emergency. Vaccination programs are ongoing in the city of goma, where up here a priest died this week. Our correspondent anne soy is eaere and sent this report. Anne goma in th of the drc, a bustling transit city, home to more than 2 million, mostly traders who are constantly on the move. An outbreak of ebola here would be devastating. The city prepared. Last weekend, its Health Systems were put to the test. Th e brothers say their uncle drove the bus on which an ebola patient traveled. The uncle later paid them a visit. Now they have come here to be vaccinated. We are told that this vaccine dont prevent you 100 from ebola. That is why i am still afraid a little bit. Pe annele who have been in contact with patnts and those around them are advised to get the jab. So far in the democratic republic of congo, more than 16e peopave been vaccinated. 165,000 people have been vaccinated. This is still an experimental vaccin but experts believe it has played a big role in preventing the further spread of the disease. Rwanda, just beyond this gate, is on alert. Nd the ions show how bad things could get if bigger outbreak hit the city. The World Health Organization has advised against closing borders, because in any case, he it doesnt stop the spread of ebola. Experts say it could make an already complex outbreak worse. It would hurt the congolese , peopo if they cannot move in a formal way omar f border crossings will find informal ways, which will make detection harder, and it will make t movement of goods and Health Care Workers harder as well. T ne aid agencies say they need more funds not j keep people safe from ebola, but many others around the region. As long as there is an outbreak in the drc, trade and travel means it could spread to neighboring countries and beyond. Anne soy, bbc news, goma. Nada you are watching bbc world news america. Police in japan are combing through the wreckage of a burnedout Animation Studio in kyoto, where 33 people were killed on thursday. The suspect is a 41yearold man who is thought to have used petrol to start the fire. Reporter the fire at the kyoto Animation Center is one of japans worst mass casuay incidents since world war ii. Eyewitnesses to thursdays incident described a loud explosion, followed by ara inferno thadly engulfed the building. Dozens died in the incident, and 10 people remain in hospital in critical condition. With regard to this incident, it is something we have never seen before and is unforgivable. To beonest, we are shocked so many people died in such a small space. report caught on camera at the moment of his arrest, it i still not clear whether police have been able to question the chief suspect in this horrifying son attack. Observers to the arrest say the suspect was visully angry and be heard complaining that the Kyoto Animation Company had. Stolen his ide the man is now in hospital and is reported to he suffered severe burns. The Animation Company produces films and graphic novels, mainly about teenage school life. Their work as a global following. I imagine that the shock must be significant for people working in the animation industry. The Fire Department said the building sprinklers, and neither were indoor hydrants installed, as dthese are not require under fire codes for this type of construction. Nada dangerously hot weather is hiing most of the United States this weekend. Over the next few days, 85 of the u. S. Population will see atures above 90 degrees fahrenheit. One of the cities expected to be hit the hardest is boston. It may reach 100 degrees. I mark it has only seen 25 times in the last century and a half. For more on the Science Behind the heatwave, i was joined earlier by a meteorologist from wbur. Thanks for joining us. Can you help us understand what is causing the heatwave . Is it mainly the remnants of hurricane barry . Actually, it is not. Hurricane, bare remnants of that, went out to sea a couple days ago. Now we have highpressure, almost the opposite of a hurricane. It is circulating warm air around it. The air circulates in a clockwise direction and it is pumping in heat and humidity in the eastern two thirds of the United States. Da is it those high temperatures combined with the humidity which has caused the mayor to declare heat emergency and be so concerned about people going out in public . That is exactly right. It is really the moisture. Its often said it is not the heat, it is the humidity. Awe see the dew pointay to measure the moisture in the 70s. The highest it has been in boston is the 78degree dewpoint, and we will approach that. You combine that with a temperature between and 100 degrees, and it will feel between 102 and 110 degrees during the middle part of the day saturday and sunday. It is a situation where you want to take it easy. Nada i think one of the things that struck me is the fact that last month was the hottest june on record globally. We have seen the last nine out of 10 junes, hottee occurred in st nine years. Is this something that cities are going to have to get used to . I think it is definitely a trd. July isnt done, but it looks like july is going to come in number one. It could come in as one of the warmest months ever for the planet. We will have to wait and see what happens over the next couple of weeks. Indeed, as the climate continues to warm, we will see more da where we reach recorhigh temperatures, and the other thing that is happening is with more warmth, we are seeing more moisture, and that means warmer nights. The nights are increasing in terms of warmth faster than the days, which makes it tougher to sleep. That becomes more difficult and more problematic for people. Nada inevitably, whenever we have these heat waves, the issue of Climate Change comes up. As a meteorologist looking at the science, is there a link . One heatwave doesot equate to Climate Change, but as the Climate Changes, we are seeing heat waves last longer, the temperature that is reached during the heat wave is a little bit higher. Ba if you wen 50 years, it would probably still be a heatwave similar to this, but i mist be a little longer, a little more humid, and we will see that happening over the next decade, two decades, three decades, as we move forward. Heat waves will be more pronounced. Te the higheserature within a heatwave will be higher. And the overnight lows are definitely increasing. Nada all right, thanks for joing us. Youre welcome. On nada it iof the burning questions in our society, with big implications for the millions of americans who jump on an airplane each dao you recline your seat or not . For some it is a nobrainer. Others see it as just plain rude. I spoke earlier with the washington posts natalie compton. Thanks for joining us. We had a passionate debate in the office, and im surprised that i am one of the few who does recline my seat. Before you came up with your guide, where did you fall into . Onnatalie i was always so who reclined because i am shortt anever occurred to me that someone would be in an uncomfortable position with someone reclining. Nada you say it is not justat about ou feel is your right. There is proper etiqueuge. Take us thsome of the dos and donts. Natalie something that people are passionate about is that the button is there and that is my right and i agree with them. That is totally true. But do you want to be a considerate person and not make whenemie you are flying . Erart with taking a big over taking a peek our shoulder and just asking, do you mind, am i making you uncomfortable, and go from there. Nada there are other considerions how long the flight, is there a child vs. An nba star behind you. [laughter] natalie definitely. If any meal service is going on, int have your seat recline. You are eating ais recline and that is weird. A is behind you, you might get kicked if you are reclined, but they are smaller so it does not have the suffocating feeling. If it is a shorter flight people might be working on their laptops. That might be difficult. But if it is a long haul or red e, you are not going to bother them as much. Nada i could see this posing problemsor people who are ok with reclining, but then have respect theeh persond them but then have someone in front of them are inclined, and you are stuck on the flight. Th natalie i situation, if it was me personally, i am taking the karma points and going, ok, im a little smushed. Et there are a lot of peo who say that if the person in front of me is reclining, it is part way, but it is up to you at the end of the day. Nada you had so many passionate resp and i thought it was funny that people were saying we should not be turning on each other, this isn Airline Industry problem that they are asking us to fix. Is that true in some sense . Is it becoming a problem because airlines are shrinking legroom . Natalie i thinkt is on the airline to bring us more room. Recently flight attendants went s congress and said that this is cruelty, thisrture putting us in small positions. While people were amongst themselves, it is the airlines we should be fighting with. Nada natalie, thank you so much. Natalie thank you. Nada we thought we would leave you with a sneak peak. 33 years after thet origina gun movie was released, tom cruise is back.
