The scale, even for israel, which has experienced plenty of violence, unprecedented. It is by far the worst day in israeli history, never before have so many israelis been killed by one single thing, let alone enemy activity on one day. If you are americans and want to compare this to something in american history, this could be a 911 and they pearl harbor wrapped into one. Israeli jets have already conducted hundreds of retaliatory strikes inside gaza. The small palestinian enclave, home to more than 2 million people, they too now cut up in this work. Caught up in this war. This woman screaming they are destroying us after an israeli bomb hit a mosque nearby. This may just be the prelude of worse to come. Both countries must sign off for them to be used. Joining us is brad sherman. Thanks for joining us. The israeli Prime Minister says these airstrikes in gaza are just the beginning. Hamas is threatening to execute hostages on live tv. Will this be a drawn out, brutal warp . Two last many weeks, perhaps months. You cannot leave hamas. You cannot pretend this just did not happen. You cannot leave them with a sophisticated military power that they have demonstrated. You have to disable hamas. That will be difficult. It will not be pretty. But it what is the alternative . You have been a member of the House Foreign Affairs committee for 28 years. What should the u. S. Be doing now . We should be eating israel, not only militarily, but diplomatically, because there are already those who are saying that israel should not defend itself. Those calls will be louder as israel takes necessary actions. I think that everyone with a voice in america has got to say that when an organization like hamas dedicates itself for decades to kill or expel every jew from the middle east, you should take them at their work. That is their program. The Biden Administration have and more involved in this conflict before now . I think the Biden Administration has been very involved and in fact may have triggered this through its success in bringing saudi arabia and israel together on the precipice of a deal that would be historic. One possible view of this is that hamas was acting out of fear that israel would conclude a deal with saudi arabia and with much of the arab world and that they would be left isolated. I do not think hamas did this because just because they could. Think they thought they had to. On that normalization agreement between saudi arabia and israel, where does that stand now . It is certainly on hold. I would not expect progress for the next several weeks. But the possibility of a coalition in israels government would help move that process along. I think 70s seeing the brutality of those who take the iranian line, we will probably see executions on live television. We have already been threatened with that. What is not being reported is the rapes and beheadings that have already occurred on israeli soil. As that information gets out, the saudis may feel they would be better off with israel than aligning themselves with iran and its proxies. What can be done by the u. S. Or others to stop that brutality . You have to defeat hamas. You cannot reform amounts. Hamas. That will take weapons and diplomatic support from the u. S. Some have called hamels hamas has called for a truce. Right after pearl harbor, i am sure japan would have liked a truce having destroyed so much of our navy. That is not going to happen. What about the civilians in the gaza strip . What can be done about the humanitarian crisis there . I am troubled by this discussion of turning off food and water. I hope that is shortterm. Israel has done a phenomenal job of working to avoid civilian casualties. Hamas has done a phenomenal job in trying to increase palestinian casualties. They use homemade rockets, the large portion of which never reach israel but instead class into crash into the gaza strip, densely populated. They are storing weapons in mosques and schools. You see them using human shields. Hamas tries to maximize palestinian civilian casualties. Israel, on the other hand, i have never seen another military do this. They actually informed people that target has to be hit. They give people either through cell phones or leaflets or a small explosion the idea that this building or that will be bombed. I have never seen a military anywhere in the world take such efforts to reduce civilian casualties. Brad sherman, thank you for joining us. The Israeli Military says they have struck at least 2400 targets on monday alone in gaza. Our reporter there filed this report earlier. Israeli strikes in gaza. This is the biggest. In this building, it is a seven story building. 50 families live in this building. I could hear the screaming with the kids shouting. Most of the electricity is not functioning. The internet is down. Because many of the buildings today they destroyed the headquarter of the communication company, causing the problem to be even bigger and the internet to be down in more areas. Talking about the humanitarian situation, gaza has been suffering for three days without electricity. Most of the crossings are closed. Except the crossing with egypt. They only allow people to go in and out, no goods, no fuel, no medicine. The World Health Association warning that within 48 hours, medical supplies are running out in the hospital. And we urgently need supplies to provide services to many people. We are starting to cope with the struggling to cope with the situation, with the injuries. People are arriving to the hospital from faraway places. About that now. We are joined by a senior fellow at the middle east institute. Thanks for joining us. Can i ask about what we have just heard, the humanitarian crisis looming in the gaza strip . How concerned are you about conditions there . It is very alarming. I think given the massive scale of death on the israeli side, i think the International Community should be doing it at most to prevent even more killing and harm to civilians already the israeli bombardment has taken the lives of at least 680 palestinians, including more than 100 children. I think it is important to point out contrary to what we heard a moment ago from the previous guest, a lot of people like to say that israel takes great caution to limit civilian casualties. But that has not been borne out by the facts. Not in this conflict and not in previous ones. I think the empirical evidence by the majority of International Human rights workers have found that israel has a bad record when it comes to protecting civilians, the fact that they are willing to cut all medicine, fuel, food, electricity into gaza i think is part of that record of showing a real disregard for civilian life. It is a good talking point, but it is not accurate. We are seeing that on the ground at the moment in gaza. I think the last thing the International Community would want to do is to be outraged about atrocities in israel only to enable atrocities in gaza. There needs to be a more Robust International effort to push for a ceasefire, to an immediate return of all civilians were being held captive, and to find a way out of this. What does that way out of this conflict look like . There is not going to be any Movement Toward a political resolution anytime soon. At a minimum, there should be work in the security cancers to demand immediate the City Councils to demand an immediate ceasefire. In the past, we have blocked or tried to delay those attempts. That is what that is not one is called for now. Israel has a vastly superior military. Israel has bombed gaza repeatedly. They have not achieved their Political Goals in bombing gaza. There need to be responsible actors in the u. S. And in europe saying there is no military solution to this issue. There is only a political resolution over the longterm. In the immediate term, there needs to be immediate Movement Toward a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance for people on the ground. Would you like to see the United States doing . It has brokered talks before. Is Something Like that a possibility again . No. I do not think the u. S. Is in a position. They do not have leverage any longer. I do not think they have credibility in the palestinian arena to play the traditional role of the mediator that it has in terms of the broader concept. Conflicts. The Biden Administration in particular has provided unconditional support for israel, even when it seemingly violates international norms. The u. S. , the will they could play is to try to reign in its israeli ally, not out of sympathy for palestinians, but at least in the name of stability and also of preserving whatever may be left of the rulesbased International Order that folks in washington, brussels, and london like to talk about. If those norms are real, then they should apply to palestinians as well, who do not have the kind of fighter power that israel has. Notwithstanding of course the atrocities that were committed against israelis, that should not be used as a license to commit atrocities against palestinians. We will leave it there for the moment. We can go live to jeremy in israel. This is a major middle east crisis. What is the significance of what is happening now . The significance is that hamas has inflicted a grievous blow on israel. Israel is in the process of inflicting a series of massive flows against the palestinians in gaza. Mr. Netanyahu said this evening that they had not reached full intensity on that and they would do things that would essentially deter their enemies for generations. There are also concerns that the scale of what is happening could lead to wider trouble between israelis and palestinians elsewhere and perhaps even a wider war. There were some encouragements from lebanon earlier today. A whole variety of worries, because essentially this was an unprecedented attack. Now they are into new territory. Things are not following the usual routines. This is unexpected. Everybody is very worried about what is coming down the road. Briefly, given the sophistication of the hamas attack, the capability of israel to respond, what is a possible way out of this . Not sure there is a possible way out. The logical for his taken over. Once israel does what it is planning to do, there are massive political questions about what happens to gaza, what happens to the palestinians and israelis, and questions about the fact there has been no political process for 10 years between them. The toxicity of what is happening, the terrible violence, is linked to that. Jeremy bowen, thank you. Just a reminder that you can head to bbc. Com news for updates on that conflict on the ground.
