Back to our breaking news. We just finished listening to a live News Conference from pga be updating the situation as pertains to the power cut offs already, hundreds of thousands of customers in the bay area are without power now and other areas are coming on line later tonight. It had been scheduled for 8 oclock it may stay at 8 oclock. Theyre reassessing now it could be between 8. 10 the should also course are designed to reduce the risk wildfires. Amid these dry and windy condition of his dna. Just said that is going to shut off power in portions of 34 counties. Throughout the entire state due to the severe drive wind event its expected to create up. High fire danger. The estimate the shot off will affect some 800,000 customers across northern and Central California and in the bay area to estimated to to affect some 274,000 customers, those will be late delayed as we mentioned until 08 00pm possibly later the studies included berkeley oakland, lafayette raga san Leandro Alameda county contra costa county, San Francisco really is the only county thats not going to be impacted whether you know you know we cant stress enough that this is a very serious situation for the state of california even million a feeling the. Strong winds out there right now all of the experts say that they will be picking up as night goes on we already are dealing with a brush fire right now this is west the rio vista and Solano County happening on both sides of highway 12 near the intersection of highway one 13 you can see the winds blowing the smoke in this video of this started about 3 30 this afternoon, the fire crews are battling this fire. No word on the size or whether any structures are threatened at last count structures were not threatened nonetheless theyre trying knock this down as quickly as possible and the red flag and warning is in effect for almost the entire bay area because of the extreme fire danger which is expected over the next 24 were all just Lawrence Karnow here to kind of break it down for us. Yeah. You said they say that the conditions might improve by noon tomorrow, youre saying good luck i think that its going to stay take toll probably about 5 oclock in the afternoon tell they were really really improve that. This is such an extreme event this developingutside right now were starting to talk about some humidity levels dropping down the death of valley like humidity. Extremely bone dry. We havent had much rain at all so far so you can see all the fuel sources you can see the brown hills all around us and you get those gusty winds to go along with that it is a recipe for perfect fire conditions that were expected develop overnight tonight. Unfortunately weve already got a fire going this one near rio vista you see some of those winds begin to gust in and around that fire. Sofar not huge gust, but certainly Strong Enough to push that fire along annie at the end the fires going out here and you get some of these winds now that will only be picking up as we head through the night tonight and certainly that could push some of those embers long so hopefully firefighters can put that one out in a hurry. The meantime weve been tracking some of those winds begin to pick up in the north bay like various, you can see now to 20 Miles Per Hour. Santa rosa to 21 Miles Per Hour. So the winds now beginning to pick up around parts of the bay area not so much elsewhere more of a breeze outside across a much of the other spots but were going to see that change overnight tonight in fact these winds really going to be on the increase takings through time here watch the colors developed 9 45 at night yocan see all the red stretching across a good part of a napa sonoma marin and going to see these a strong gusty winds developing 3040 mile an hour winds and then as we head in toward the midnight hour and thereafter. Thats when a really really starts to howl around the bay area where the fire danger. Were really be on the increase 30 mile an hour winds, not over the mountain tops of these are in the urban areas where people live the 30 Miles Per Hour just about calistoga 16 into the napa valley you see that continuing throughout the night tonight into early tomorrow morning, 35 in the sonoma. And certainly you could see some 45 maybe some 55 mile an hour gusts mixed in een, b it loke toks li focal point its going to be mainly in the north they will see these winds picking up elsewhere around the bay area. But i really wont subside until about 5 maybe 6 oclock tomorrow night between now and then fire danger will be running extremely high. And you have these conditions. Theyre eerily similar to 2 years ago really to the day when gusty set off that fire storm in the north bay kron fours ken wayne joins us now from santa rosa hes in coffey park can i guess. Really some people probabl having flashbacks because of whats happening right now. Well everybody here certainly remembers what happened 2 years ago this neighborhood was wiped out by the fire 2 years ago, 5 people in this neighborhood died. After the north bay fires 2 years ago, 24 people in Sonoma County were killed and youre talking about the weather and we are expecting those winds but right now i got to tell you. It is as still as could be i mean barely a whisper of a breeze in the air but we are expecting the wind to pick up in a lot of people have been complaining about pg es response to all this and the power shutdowns because are roundabout like right now theyre saying theres no when we dont understand why the power is off but listen to this perspectve from somebody we talked to earlier lost their home in the fires 2 years ago and they have a whole different take on this power shut off. Was the us fires iras its stressful as it is its a its an event that brings up bad memories when they say we expect winds like we did in 2017 they get here is get your your guard up and you get very very nervous and so and the situation where we have to use kind of understand that its for the better. I dont for myself and my family, but i my power for 5 days and lose try to persuade some elk then there were even order the last 2 years because no matter even if youre in your home or so getting our debris removal bills, so youre still dealing with a fire even if your home or move on. So its its a long process, its not worth going through just to have power on for 4 or 5 days. So some a different perspective from somebody who has lost their home to understand why these drastic measures are being taken paul on fall is with us right now the assistant fire marshal for Santa Rosa Fire Department and youre also Public Information officer for the Emergency Operations center for the city of santa rosa. You lost your home in the fire 2 years ago. Whats your take on this massive power. That is for some customers to try to avert another disaster. Preparing for this for a long time when you there is the potential for there to be a large scale of publicity car shut off. The planning for we definitely hope it didnt actually happen, but we find ourselves in the middle one right now, definitely doing a lot of preparations. The city did activate their Emergency Operations center well in advance of this are here and like you said a is a yearly com right now. But this is the same conditions that weve ourselves in a 2 years ago definitely anticipate pretty significant wind event tonight. So when people are complaining saying theres no wind whats the problem you expected the wind is going to kick up a little bit later, has kind of 2 parts of that we have been hearing a lot of the same message is that Pacific Gas Electric have numbers operation our Public Information officers have been fielding requests throughout the day about the winds or lack thereof understand that our powers plus applied on areas are being directly affected by Power Supplies are being impacted by wins and that being said we know that the models are still on track. We have regular Conference Calls of the National Weather service as well as our partners of the county snowmen agencies across not only Summit County but across the bay area. We are anticipating those winds to kick this evening. And understand too that theyre going to be damaging so thats another twist to it and only to have the polk city power shut off but we also have the potential for damage happen to infrastructure outside of the areas and we could very well have parts of santa rosa also lose power and uh you said even while theres nothing going on with the wind right now youve had problems he had generators people running generators inside their homes, not a good idea, and there intersections where theres no power for traffic lights and youve been responding to Traffic Accident. Yes, so the first couple days last couple days focused more on preventative measures and get our Community Better prepared for this. That mike is that education been taking place for over a year now that really hit hard the last week and today we shifted focus to whats actually occurring because the power outage. Although we did have one of the first call we had this morning was related somebody that was utilized their generator. Indoors. I activated Carbon Monoxide alarm which prompted our is a legitimate incident really push that we need to get the message about the placement of generators, keep them away from homes. Around sunrise around see the Traffic Accident started a lot of our intersections we words of 35 losses of 40 without power. Without lee of the police and Fire Department here were responding to a significant number of accidents. So we had to do a lot of messaging to the using these opportunities here with kron as well as a lot of other outlets to get the message out there please come to complete stop of it signals. That are not working in had she to microsofts last question before we go a lot of people are wondering is this the new normal is this what were going to be going through one every october we know we get these offshore winds that developed and that the fire danger increases. This is what were going to go through with the genie or dont do we need a whole new way of of dealing with how we get our power in california. Yes, so you know that the wind event that we experienced october 2017 were not something that we thought wed see this quickly again yes here we find ourselves. 2 years later experiencing are looking to actually potentially experience the same conditions again are hopeful that this doesnt become the new normal are we do continue see a lot of large scale law fires and change in the weather conditions around Northern California and were hopeful that as we move into the Utility Companies will be able to help limit the impacts of Public Safety power shutoff right now obviously with the significant a number of counties that are impacted by this. Theres a lot of people that are incoming as but the same time. We just had to be prepared for for all types of incidents, disasters and other cities are sauce all thanks for taking time breaking away from your duties to come talk to us really appreciate it. All right and all the assistant fire marshal for the Santa Rosa Fire Department. So we are expecting those winds to pick up, but we are expecting the danger to increase and the humidity levels paul was telling me down to 3 in some parts of santa rosa say you can tell that the conditions are. Are bad and getting worse for fire danger in this part of the bay area. And we dont like to have our power out. But as you heard from that person earlier somebody whos lost a home in a fire, better to have power out for a few days than lose your home. Are i thank you for that reporting live from santa rosa staying in the north bay now almost the petaluma. Still has power a portion of the east side of town is in the dark or at letst it will be again later tonight in kerman is live for us tonight in petaluma without one neighborhood is coping there. Thats right. Its very small portion of the eastern part of petaluma but they are included in this area thats infecting lots of santa rosa. Power went out here about 02 30am in the morning and for many. Its comedian convenience that theyre willing to take if it reduces the fire risk. Petaluma seaside, the work. Generators is pretty common. We went yesterday got the generator. But that was our big thing actually that we did the lights went out about 02 30am in the morning here but residents have been preparing for a few days, the accumulating ice and canned foods all those kinds of and taking care of some elderly relatives so going back and forth making sure that they have ice just no one likes the lack of power but they support reducing the risk of fire. The had been over in paradise one week for those fire started and every marked what a pretty town it was and everything. And then to see what it happened to was breaks my heart for everybody so i think for me, its a good thing. Go ahead and notify us. We can that out. Still the weather is unpredictable there was no last night in know when theres no wind right now all right so seems like it was a leader to nearly 5 united video is better to be safe than sorry i guess so for now residents will continue to park their cars outside garage doors that dont open and stop and intersections were lights are not working. When it will end remains unclear. Were taking one day at a time and know just can. Gone with the well residents are hopeful, its not going to take 5 or 7 days is some counties are predicting to get the lights back on their hoping its going to be sooner than that live in petaluma dan kerman kron 4 news. Thank you dan have continuing coverage of the power shut off during the commercial breaks you can stream it all live on crime on. And we have removed the pay wall so that we can make sure that you get all of the crucial information you need during the power shut off. Download welcome back a parts of the rain county town of mill valley that that book theyve been without electricity theyve been in the dark since 3 oclock this morning causing some businesses least one school closed. Thats right kron fours Maureen Kelly is live tonight along the shoreline highway which. Has seen heavy traffic just about all day today, more rain. It means the on and off ramps to one o one its a pretty major intersection. To get in and out of mill valley because the signal lights here are and ill tell you ive heard plenty of hawking. They seems to be some people who are either ignoring or for getting up. Treat these intersections at as a fourway stop when they dont. The signal lights working. Now this is just one of many problems being experienced because of this power outage here. The neon signs of the landmark restaurant buckeye road house are dark and a notice posted out in front tells patrons that theyre closed until further notice because of the Power Outages. But just down the road several businesses at camp junction have their lights on one woman getting her Morning Coffee says her alarm clock didnt go off because of the power outage make youre late for work, frankly. Im ok with it. As long as were going to be safe with the weather. Want to dodge that bullet. The hallways are dark a tan valley elementary school. So the Mill Valley School district decided to close it down. Its the only school in their district affected by whats being called a Public Safety power shut off. Some staff and teachers were there working in dark classrooms. Well, a few kids played in the yard. Several parents supervising say they were alerted to this possibility tuesday and were notified early wednesday morning. One says its inconvenience he can live with beautiful daggett spend time with my son, you know should pt and and its infrastructure repairs and last 50 years yes. Obviously but getting mad about that now doesnt really get anywhere. And. Know where are. But that inconvenience might be repeated tomorrow since the district says tim belly school could be closed for several days. So were prepared f that and if it is well just have to enjoy ourselves a little bit longer. She learn something next week. School district says the Mill Valley School district says that they are. Well be able to reopen tomorrow but really all just to pass. During the situation and they will be alerting parents at 5 15 thursday morning. If they can reopen the school or if it needs remain. Reporting from mill valley i morning kelly. Were going to take a look now at weather conditions all across the bay area. Changing as we speak and were tracking all t the june, a Public Safety power shutoff prompted state officials to lot Emergency Operation centers to Capitol Bureau reporter Ashley Zavala explains whats going on there. The state Emergency Operations center is activated at its second highest level is pg e rolls out its largest Public Safety power shutoff ever. This is normally activated in response to an emergency. But this time its prectionary. This is a big weather event and its a big fire risk and we need to take this very seriously inside the Emergency Operations center several state agencies are keeping an eye on resources and services in areas affected by the power shut offs some utility resources are already preposition in nevada in case of an emergency one of our Big Companies has 135 generators. Sitting at the waiting for permits from the air Resources Board to be brought into california standards well cal oh, yes heads the operation in Northern California governor Gavin Newsome wednesday keeping updated in Southern California and making sure to focus in on 3 things Public Safety, public health. And minimizing. The business that obviously is of concern to anyone by cases of potential shut off. Law enforcement and cal fire are a constant presence at the e o c both aiming to keep the public safe during the power shut off swell monitoring the high fire threat pg e also has a presence inside the Operation Center this really isnt president promote genie and the state and its really important that we partner not only with state and local and county agencies and also with our customers so were going to try to learn from this event and want from your everyone on how we can do better. How long the Emergency OperationCenter States activated depends entirely on this weather event Officials Say they expect to keep this up and running at least through friday. Reporting in Sacramento CountyAshley Zavala kron 4 news. Coverage will continue on kron on. And 7 oclock tonight joining us from the newsroom grant and katharine thats very fluid situation with this extreme both working on for 00 07pm tonight. You know were going to have the latest a pan and vicki on whats happening with the wind conditions. Everything from traffic 2 of the fire risk and basically be in mef hose communities where theyre waiting for power to be shut off as well as places where theyve been in the dark. One of the more frustrating and confusing aspects of this is we just learned within the hour baking pan as you heard. That the 8 oclock estimation for when so many people in the east bay and south bay in santa cruz area would lose power. Is now not a hard and fast 8 oclock it could be up to 10 oclock it could be beyond that pga officials citing a changing weather pattern. The high winds have been slower to move into the area than they anticipated. And there is even more uncertainty at this point tonight almost 7 oclock then there has been even throughout the day. And we just wanted to mention quickly where temporarily suspending the subscription fee. Because of this emergency. There are people who cant watch on tv because of Power Outages the kron on 24 hour app that will be a free at least for now and you can go the app stores really easy like any other. Downloadable app on your phone just hop on to that app store and again that is now free usually is a small monthly fee. But for this, you know few days were going to suspend the fee. Back to you will have all of that alive from 7 date. All right Katharine Graham thanks to both. Mother nature, yes, true and thats whats going to be throughout the night tonight right would make these forecasts. We have all these fabulous computer models but then watch all plays out. Tonight weve already begin to see some changes as weve seen the humidity dropped to between 3, 4 , in some parts of the north bay already that is a bone dry. And thats extreme fire conditions developing thats expected to continue throughout the night tonight look at that as we get toward 5 oclock in the morning. Only 10 relative humidity in sonoma, the same a nap in the same in fairfield only 15 in livermore 20 in concord even 21 that is very unusual for San Francisco, offshore wind will keep things very dry as we head to the day tomorrow this will be the peak of the wind right through tonight and early tomorrow morning and even in the afternoon, that still staying very very dry. So should a fire breakout itll st1ll be dry in parts of the east bay. Well youll start to see things recover as you make your toward the coastline. The most extreme fire conditions are expected to be in the north bay sonoma and napa out bill also saint helene cloverdale were expecting strong gusty winds there guys it is going to be a lot long night.
