Take a look at your screen. So you can see stephen his 32 years old and he is accused of killing as i said that santa cruz sheriffs sergeant saturday and wounding 2 other officers it happened when deputies responded to a 911 call around one 30 about a suspicious van in the Santa Cruz Mountains the caller said that there were guns and bomb making devices inside that man when deputies arrived the van pulled away driving down the driveway of the home where deputies followed it was then they were ambushed by gunfire and explosives, 38 yearold damon gets wilder was shot along with another deputy plus a deputy was hit by a car creo useful to flee the scene a Highway Patrol officer was shot in the hand thats well or died from his injuries at the hospital eventually korea was shot during his arrest, he was treated at the hospital for non life threatening injuries, hes been charged with first degree murder, aggravated assault or assault with a Deadly Weapon as well as carjacking lets take a look at his history though because as we know hes an active duty. And a member of the 60th Security Forces squadron the sheriff says correa was reportedly shot during his arrest. He is expected to face murder charges assault with a Deadly Weapon carjacking and other charges. I ask that the community be patient. As we go through this investigation and the grieving process. Damon will be deeply missed. By this community by his family. And by all his coworkers here at the Sheriffs Office, he was a beloved figure here at the Sheriffs Office. That was a lot of toddlers han reporting Governor Newsom also extended his condolences you see a portion of it on your screen in which she writes a quote sergeant cuts will or will be remembered as a hero who devoted his life to protecting the community and as a loving husband, and father. The governor also went on to say the capital flags will be flown at halfstaff in the deputies honor. Today marks 2 weeks since george floyd was killed and his death is of course what sparked this National Movement for change. Is stretched all the way to the bay area for days, lets take a look at the demonstrations that happened yesterday in the east bay, hundreds of people gathered in lafayette to protest Police Violence said they started at Lafayette Plaza and then moved along mount diablo boulevard to Veterans Hall in oakland protesters made their way on to interstate 8. 80. And there was also another march around lake barrett. And take a look at what artists and volunteers are doing painting a large black lives matter street mural in oakland the project started yesterday morning it stretches about 3 blocks long near broadway and harrison the first black lives matter street mural popped up in washington d c in an area that was just recently renamed black lives matter plaza. Meantime the Police Officer whos accused of killing floyd goes to court today, derek childhood will appear virtually before a judge in the afternoon. He is the one who kneeled on the neck of floyd in front of cameras for 8 minutes and 46 seconds before floyd died. He faces seconddegree manslaughter charges and the 3 other officers who are with him are accused of aiding and abetting. And we will keep you posted on what happens after todays court appearance. Switching gears here, lets talk about the latest with the pandemic here in the bay area Alameda County now easing its restrictions and thats good news for a lot of folks who are dying to get out maybe even some doing some shopping yeah and now you can hang out with groups in your own little social bubble as long as it stays to 12. Or fewer concourse a will tran will youve been counting on your how many friends youre going to get together with. I have about 7 total before this see work. The boy in the bubble now you may be social bubble. Thats a new phrase for 2020 race. So this is whats going to happen you can start hanging out with friends outside of your household so long, its fewer than 12 people. And you have to hang out for about 3 weeks they want to see how it plays out its going to be outdoors but at least it loosens up a little bit for social butterflies like James Fletcher so you can start going out there with all possible james and hang out and flex your social muscle other things that you can start doing right now take a look at your screen there we talked about social bubble. You also can drop off your children at day care a lot of people are finally starting to get back to work and before now only essential workers that they had their child care. Allowed to them but now with a lot of people going back to work you can drop off your children, not a problem. Businesses educational businesses you can start taking on internships and pathway programs and then you can also stop by the library pick up books along its curbside it seems like everything is curbside these days including libraries and then you can have a repair person come into your house, you need anything should happen a little intrusive before then but now you can and also pet grooming is available to you and if youre wondering a lot of people were frustrated, why wasnt uniform across the board. The reason why it took a little bit longer for Alameda County, then some other counties because Alameda County has the most coronavirus cases at around 3800 and more than 100 people have died from it and thats what the governor and the local officials said they would rely on the Scientific Data and not emotions so now Alameda County its your turn come on down. Lets start to hang out and i i want to hang out with your social bubble. But im im lucky number 13, yes to popular yet nowhere fall where he where he chose. Yeah and i dont have a positive entourage right thats how i read people for much will help. Well kron 4 courses been keeping you updated of all the protests all the complex to the curfews. Time now is a 12 well take in the buzz the weekend saw its biggest demonstrations yet to demand justice for george floyd and end racism, whats love got to do with it everything thats why i want you to meet a newly engaged couple who did their first tv interview with kron 4 after joining for their first protest. Protest on the Golden Gate Bridge. Bay area couple quinn the messenger and carry montgomery and engaged yesterday right there in the middle of it all out how cool is that you can see the excitement there everybody. Applauding cheering bringing smiles which weekend sorely use more of in these times quinn and kerry who you see in the video actually joining us this morning via zoom to talk about that moment that honestly has gone viral. This morning, good morning guys. Morning my name and congratulations tell us how this sure long. Thank you all giving us of a platform and says sometimes facebook the all this you know we know the whole country is is hurting right now and all of us are processing things in a different way. This week has been a very challenging for me as a member of the black community. And theres been some cultural traumas that have come up inside and is forming years in instrumental in beinable to help you navigate those things and. I have had a lot of fear as a black man in america going to these know some of that fear is from seeing things on on on the news and in social but also my father who is African American grew up in the south 3 Civil Rights Movement and his parents when allow him to go to the protests out of fear of in being targeted. So kerry went to protest earlier this it was a very challenging moment for me. Because i felt my had been taken away that i didnt have a chance to go in support. So i stayed behind and supported in prayer and in that prayer. Ive found that it was important for us to to go together and we went down there. I had the ring in my pocket, and i just held on the whole time and i just let lovely kerry had no idea that it was coming in. When it happened i think i was confused because it didnt seem like she im sure you carry a care youve been at these protests and he doesnt come so you figure. Well hes just going to come along the second question right that had to be shot. The only one i also want to just tiana day the 17 yearold who won the preakness together and seeing thousands of people out on long before and i dont know if you can tell from the video i had no idea what clinton is and i think everyone around us knew what was going on in and then i saw the reunion i was just shocked and shaking and you know i think the take away for me is i also we have a lot Difficult Conversations this week and i think the important thing is just getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and i grew up in birmingham, alabama, and you know i. Knowledge that i have work to do, but i also have a voice and everyone has a voice and Everyone Needs to engage in these conversations and you know its so much more than protests since get active and boat and go to your City Council Meetings and listen to people and have empathy and learn from each other because you know im not doing this right no ones doing it right you have to just take a step forward and you have to the okay with just opening up and having conversations and so it was just awesome so feel everyone happy and the energy and you know not everyone can see it i lives that its it was it was just really to be able to share them on strangers was really incredible it sounds like though this was a test of your relationship going up to this with you going out carrying the protests in the eu quinn saying no im not going to go that must have caused some friction. It did and you know weve been in a relationship for 5 years and we keep learning from each other and i had to learn to just listen and be patient and understand that. You know when has a different experience of course than i do and i have to put him first in this moment and we did we had a we had a lot of really tough conversations not just with each other, but family and with friends and outwork and you know its yeah and i think to carry really touched on it, you know, were all coming at this with our own doctor astin in our own trauma know we even as a member of the black community, you know we all have our own experiences in our own trauma that were dealing with in i think this week has been really eye opening for us they its really important to to listen first. And first and foremost if if if someone isnt giving you a chance that doesnt mean that you cant give them a chance its been a really healing process for us in i was actually going to propose to carry in japan. A couple months ago, but the coronavirus hit and were unable to go we had to cancel our trip and i was really upset and angry been waiting for that but this this phone right i decided to do it the night before in it was my guiding to go out there and face some of my fears, im going to be just as annoying is like your parents might be like not same way you can have kids but. I cant say ok if and when you have kids. How are you going to treat. Protests and social activism because i find that interesting quinn that your initial reaction because of the way europe was oh no im not going to go im not going to go im all for it, but i want to go and and care you are the opposite oh yeah i need to go so what do you go to model for your kids. Sure absolutely thank you for asking that because first and foremost as the work that we all have to do together and thats the work that we all need to do as adults and leaders is to remind us remind everyone that this is about legacy. This is about the legacy of this country not being broke in country has been built this way and that we need to be honest about those things and that you know its important they they i think the next generation really understands that. Theres theres aspects of of all of us that we need to listen to and you need to lead with listening and that we need to lead by example that was also really important for me and going tomorrow is when my dad shared with me that he was scared to go i had that fear inside of me and i needed to move past that and carry you that in we must lead by example we must listen. And finding a you know i think also a creative in and just a very simple way of speaking with with children is really you know i speaking to fairness you know that thats something that most children can understand that these conversations need to happen immediately. I mean en i was growing up conversations about race were happening in our everyday lives just because you know i come from a multiracial family and vice versa conversations about race for not happening in my life because i grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood white law and you know its something e 19 to later in life and it should be starting from the get go and i think thats we dont have the answer were learning every day and its constant work and. You know we want to make sure that when we do have a from day one is issues are brought up and then talked about and its just its open and comfortable to be able to talk about you know racism and Systemic Police Brutality and you know just these issues that we live with and we dont talk about so. You know and those are new conversations for us to you know a lot has been brought to the surface this we needed this moment of happiness probably just as much as maybe other people needed that. Just been overwhelmed with the support all right well like the ring to the face there one more thank you so much for joining us today and in a moment of strife that were seeing right now you guys are the embodiment. Of the love the compassion the app to see the unity that we need to see more of thank you so much for sharing your story with us this morning. Alright congrats. Happening today in houston, the 3rd and final Memorial Service for george floyd today marks 2 weeks. Since he died at the hands of Minneapolis Police sparking protests across the country. Carol forges in houston right now with more on the story. The 2 weeks since 46 yearold george floyd was killed while in police custody. Protests across the united and inspired similar protests around the world. 10s of thousands of people took to the streets of washington dc sunday, including at the newly painted black lives matter plaza to cast i think is necessary that were in dc in the Nations Capital speaking loudly against Police Brutality against racism against violence, civil rights leaders say they see signs of hope. These are evolutionary time my father, cnn news time. Revolutionary times name that systems and people will be changed. So im im encouraged by what were seeing all around the world. And saturday is when carolina fords family and friends also say theyre hopeful for its death will have a Lasting Impact on the country there is no way in the world. That his life will not change the trajectory. Of racism from now on today food comes home to houston. The city where he grew up. For the 3rd and final Memorial Service in Houston Texas on do this. Theres no amount of credentials is not accomplishment. Theres no amount of money they can change the fact that we literally all our doors. Coming up next the mayor of saint paul minnesota opening up about his familys experience with racism, an experience he says that goes right now want to check out the weather and the gangs all back together weve got our little bubble quite far apart though, even though you are in the studio its a its a big bubble, but the average athlete keeping the social distancing going put great to be back in the studio. Although i do miss the comfort of the couch just a little bit looking out there at the spay you can see nice clear skies overhead and clear skies all the way out to the coast, the Golden Gate Bridge not experiencing any fog this morning and were going continue to look at nice clear skies on into the afternoon too. So get out there enjoy the sunshine a little bit. But of course dont forget social distancing still and we will be looking at temperatures today a little warmer than they have been right now were in the 50s and 60s with Berkeley Oakland conquered and san mateo all low 60s. Redwood city hayward as well as petaluma and santa rosa still hanging on to the 50s currently later today, its 70s for San Francisco, oakland and san jose. Although for san jose youre definitely warming up getting close to 80 now which is a number a lot of us are going to reach this afternoon talking more about that still to come back to you. Thanks a 32 right now and as the bay area and the nations struggle with Race Relations and social justice in the wake of the George Floyd Murder in minneapolis. Then theres the pandemic on top of that they cripple the country and the president s poll numbers are now struggling now to help us digest what these new numbers mean is gop. Political analyst on double car joining us remotely this tom good morning. Thank you for joining us. It does seem a. So lets start off with the cnn numbers that just came out recently they conducted a new poll. And well put the numbers up on the screen but i mean they dont paint a positive picture for the president as were now what 5 months away from the election in november and do we have those numbers that we could put them up here for you so that you can see them. But in essence what they show is basically a 14 point deficit for the president when compared to joe biden the question that was asked was if the election were held today who would you vote for former Vice President joe biden or the current President Donald Trump and it doesnt look positive for the president , your thoughts. Well chris, you know i dont buy buy me your money your homes realize that were in the divide here thats the book im grown and since the second election of obama well we found in polling is that democrats almost uniformly vote for democrats in these National Elections and the same holds true republicans almost uniformly both for republicans and they dont cross over very much at all so what does that mean you can predict the outcome poll basically by finding out how Many Democrats you ask the question how many republicans. Cnn all year long fox and others major media polls and consistently asked about 32 democrats about 25 republicans. But thats not what rasmussen and gallup say self self identification is so in reality is ive said all year long nationally this is going to be a close election remember obamas reelection bid to win 7 was los reelect number in a long long time. Republicans have lost 4 out of the last 5 popular votes. So this is going to go down to the wire. The cnn poll does not accurately reflect the american electorate. Tom when coronavirus first happened i think the president whether or not you like the way he handled it political pundits would say he did a good job of getting out front. Given those press conferences talking for hours every single day. What if anything do you think he could do better. In the crisis that were facing now which is the racial divide and handling whats happened. Since the george situation. As you know from my podcast on kron. Were all leaders need to be careful with their wording. This includes the president and so yes, he has used wording that hasnt helped his own cause. Today hes fine hes holding a round table with respect to this Police Enforcement and racial issues. I think thats probably overdue although its only been 2 weeks i think governor newson should do the same in california. But we need a functioning Law Enforcement as part of our society thats just a fact and all of our leaders need to temper their language and sit down and Work Together to have to hear some harsh words from one side or the other but like you cant have eric our city a major city mair mayor member los angeles countys the than 42 states calling police killers that wont help. And we cant have rhetoric on the other side that that is an inflammatory either they need to sit down and Work Together thats what a responsible chief executive doesnt glam trumps 2 starting to do that today but speaking of harsh words, it doesnt help to hear the very harsh words from his own. Military commanders who have been like colin powell part of the republican party. Yeah, im not a fan of colin powell we need to remember you macarthur and truman fight you saw mcclellan who lake and fired run against him. Youve got to have this kind of thing but you asked an important question what should trump be doing to make this situation better it starts with sitting down and talking directly with people all governors, including minnesota california go say should be part of this when you shoot trying to get poll numbers you should try and get resolutions hard to do in an election year. But you ask the important question what can they do physically leadership is a physical think he should be physically sitting down and talking to people. Well and to get back to your point where you said that words matter and it does come from the top you have people out in the streets demonstrated protesting screaming for change because they say police have become excessive in their handling of black americans. But yet you here. This is the president and those directly around him using words like police need to dominate the battle space is that the kind of messaging that the president to be putting out and who is there among the president s inner circle who can speak truth to power and let him know that this is not the way to speak Going Forward if he wants to win over those African American voters that hes going to need in november. Yeah, well look theres a new rasmussen poll it shows that 40 over 40 of black americans now support the president thats an historic high. So im not sure that its its mom with think that its moving one direction or another, but as steve hilton has talked about he has to move past simply saying things like you to set the same dominate here in california japanese never should have said your rage israel and the middle of the violence. You know there a woman shot just 500 yards from my office and walnut creek is boarded up that kind of rhetoric you are correct doesnt help in that moment and probably doesnt help in the long term. But again this is not just about actions if this just dissipating goes away and there isnt good communication like the house bill right now was drafted alone by democrats if we just the one side or the other instead of sitting down together this may not improve things over time and all this effort in banks would have gone almost 2 way so what im hopeful liz in indys roundtable said the president is doing and i hope the governor just one in this state that they actually reach some concrete changes that help the situation and said just barking at each other well you have such good advice was given the advice said this to the president to. You know gas a bunch of protesters so he can stand for the church of the bible whose time well that okay there west side gas is actually youve got all these great advice and whos advising him to do that. Well look this is part of a greater problem the science just like i talk about somebody or they just talk to their own side. And so its about i dont know the answer to your question specifically. But we are so divided and we so attack each other that we can get to this other space but i you know i dont know exactly what it must keep in mind though that frozen Water Bottles and there was broken glass found in those that in that square that you were discussing mylan started so thats where that came from, but this is how tense things are going to take a leader that that poses National Goals to get past this and said speaking to their own sites and that starts with round tables. He cant stop them. We cant let this is a page racism does exist i dont believe all cops are races we shouldnt say that but we need to sit down together ok all right tom, thank you as always wed really do appreciate your insights as were trying to navigate through these very. This includes workers in construction in manufacturing Retail Stores will be allowed to set up Curbside Pickup or instore pickup as well hair salons offices and Indoor Seating bars and restaurants, those are going to be off limits still for the foreseeable future as his broadway shows and museums and large cultural gatherings unclear exactly when those will be allowed. And some of our warmest of temperatures in the bay area right in Solano County today. Now were going continue to warm in the days to come with clear skies overhead and dry conditions in the foreseeable future. This is due to a High Pressure ridge which is built up keeping us dry creek keeping us increasingly warm too that low pressure area that brought us the brisk and windy weekend is starting to make its way out and thats being replaced by some. Calmer conditions, but also some drier and sunnier conditions. The next few days are going to continue to bring this dry weather to us with not a whole lot of fog nor marine layer at the coast just enough to keep our coastal areas, cool our inland areas are about to see some pretty warm temperatures though tomorrow and wednesday will be our warmest days of the forecast with the presents a marine layer returning to the coast and some fog by wednesday itself as for daytime highs today, coastal areas, nice and comfortable 60s and 70s, San Franciscos Financial Mission districts in the 70s, same for you in Half Moon Bay well granada daly city in the 60s from brisbane to burlingame mostly 70s, san bruno youll hang on to 67 while foster city at 76 Mountain View right at 80 degrees today and then in the south bay daytime highs 70s to 80s thats warmer than yesterday with san jose at 79 east bay highs also in the upper 70s to low 80s with temperatures back to the 80s in areas like livermore right at 80 degrees dublin. Tomorrow and wednesday as i mentioned our hottest days could see a few 90s in your 4 zone forecast. I have most of our inland areas hanging on to the upper 80s though this isnt as warm as we were the past few weeks, but it is certainly hot enough to get the ac back on thursday we begin to cool down by friday and saturday. Cut another brisk and cooler than average weekend just around the corner with that coastal wind returning and highs maxing out in the 70s. Back to you all right, thank you very much john quick check of some of the roads for you this orning as we gauge the traffic around the bay, the bay bridge opening up nicely or toll plaza camera shows its a really easy right now through the gates. And across the span, no major issues there the chp logs shows just a smattering of traffic hazards here and there, but no major accidents to slow you down the san mateo bridge also showing an equally nice ride, no issues here westbound on 92 from hayward out to foster city so far so good. 8. 49 is the time the mayor of saint paul minnesota is speaking now about his familys experience with racism. Melvin carter the 3rd is the first black mayor of his city which is. Just across the bridge from minneapolis where george floyd was killed dana bash has more. My father almost 30 years of war as a Police Officer right here in saint paul Melvin Carter, the 3rd the first black mayor of saint paul minnesota grew up with the complexities of race in police he became a Police Officer in the early 70s after a lawsuit. Required to desegregation of the Saint Paul Police department and so he was a part of a class of African American officers who came in they have stories that want always complimentary. My father tells me about the officers when he was first coming on the Police Department who would tell him that no matter what happened i just want back you up. And but then again because he was black yes thats right i also see all growing up the way he would use that bad eyesore as sort of like a superhero outfit we be in the house at midnight on a friday and someone would call and say my son is holed up in this house and loan you know surrender himself to anyone except Sergeant Carter still he says hes lost count of how many times he was stopped by police because hes black even as a City Council Member i would you know there were times when i get pulled over if you would say like why didnt you tell them who you were. And my response is if i have to be a City Council Member of idea man if i had to be the son of a Police Officer to just be treated with basic Human Dignity and to not be stopped when im obey all laws, but maybe thats the problem in the first place my young daughter told me today. She said see and think anybody should be surprised by whats happened over the past and how old is she 12 years old. That break your heart does. Does like how could it not. And you know, but and i asked her you know why why would you say that. She said because if we see. Ourselves. Being killed over and over and over again in these videos. It seems each one gets worse is that people have to do something the pain runs deep. His grandparents lost their property in the citys largely black Model Community so the government could build a highway or community was literally uprooted. Our community in our Community Members were getting.
