To stay with us. So you have more sunshine working its way and its going to look brighter but its definitely going to appear smoky all day long today, very light winds just enough to push fog in overnight, but not enough to push the smoke out of the region were going to be holding on to that today tomorrow through the weekend with only gradual improvements as each day goes by today being the worst one of your forecast even worse than the past few have been 50s for our current temperatures with pittsburgh, the only exception of the warmer side at 62. Well santa rosa and lena down into the upper 40s this morning later today, daytime highs sticking with the 70s for warmest of temperatures with 76 degrees, your average inland temperature 60s near the bay and the coastline. Its a little dance out there check this out. This is your approach to the bay bridge toll plaza when i was driving in i could hardly see the skyliner the towers on the eastern span. So youll be dealing with some dense fog here on the bay bridge and also the golden gate, those special fog advisories issued by chp so take it easy out there headlights and wipers will be needed. But at least we dont have any big traffic problems. You have to worry about under 10 minutes to make it in. Lets head over to 92. The san mateo bridge or connection between the peninsula and the east bay. We are doing fine the tell lights are heading west leaving hayworth the headlights are coming in thats going eastbound into hayward so far were good under 30 minutes between the nimitz and the bayshore were also checking the connection between the north bay in the east bay, the richmond sandra fell doesnt look as foggy here traffic remains at the limit so were off to a pretty good start. Well, although the red orange hue is gone from our bay area skies of course support air quality still lingers heres a look at the current air quality across the bay area see all those little dots there you can practically see that its bad everywhere. The higher the number the worse the air quality and we have some pretty high numbers throughout the bay area. Well to the east bay now some restaurants in alameda decided not to offer Outdoor Dining because of the bad air quality at the star restaurant, the lights are up. But they were not on the outdoor patio they shut it down. But they still have those to go orders ready and they offer that service instead, but there were some that brave the outdoors take a listen. Air quality and we are more concerned about our customers have a healthy and that are eating experience though its unsafe for our customers as well as our as our employees i can tell that its bad. Its obvious that is bad. But im glad that its breaking away a little hopefully theyll contain those fires. Well, of course depending on how todays air quality pans out you know thats going to determine if the star restaurant reopens or outdoor patio. Well to the south bay now gyms and fitness clubs can reopen indoors. But with covid19 safety rules in place. This comes after Santa Clara County moved down to the less restrictive read here of the states covid19 guidelines. However the gyms can only operate at 10 capacity and there must also be social distancing the equipment its all spaced out and regularly sanitize everybody has to put on the mass but there are little to no complaints so far. Those are lot of stress work and school the fun, its a difference and make a day like a little bit better this time is that they look forward to members have been excited. Get to not just with physical will be but also their mental wellbeing. Now theyre saying about 45 to 49,000 riders a day bart Officials Say that they. Bart officials there say that commuting on the trains is safe. Were running were safe. We have good air flow. We have mask requirements we have hand sanitizers at every single but right now our focus is getting writers to feel comfortable riding the trains. Well meantime Bay Area TransportationOfficials Say that drivers have been slowly getting back on the roads. Ive notice us as well we saw a big rise in traffic over the summer and it has remained fairly steady ever since. Well to the north bay, the Vallejo Police department has launched a new initiative to stop shootings in their city. Its called operation peas last week the city recorded its 21st murder of 2020, 16 of those deaths were African American police chief Shawny Williams is confident that through partnerships including with the local n double acp chapter. The department can address the citys issue with 21st century policing. When we look at gun violence in our city the last. This last august we had up to 209 shootings in our city. Weve had 21 murders. Thats a 300 increase from last year one of the things that were doing as a Police Department is improving our processes. The organizational structure or training and were going continue to do that. Well despite these new Developments PoliceOfficers Association argues that crime can be deterred by having more cops on the street. They say the Vallejo Police department its a 180 officers right now the city has a little more than half of whats necessary without an increase in officers warns that the is on pace to have its worst year for murder since 1994. Well now to our wildfire coverage at least 10 people are dead and several others injured in butte county from a fire that was known as the bear fire, cal fire changed its name to the north complex west zone fire. Crews found 7 bodies on thursday after finding 3 on wednesday more than a dozen people are still missing and the flames have destroyed about 2000 buildings. Well experts say californias historic drought and insect attacks are contributing to the intensity of the creek fire thats burning in Fresno County. But the same conditions exist in parts of Northern California as well lonnie wong explains. The creek fire in Fresno County is being fueled in part by millions of trees that died during the historic 5 year drought that ended in 2017 killed by bark beetles which attacked water stress trees, theres a lot of needles and branches and wood. That is really fueling this fire but there are millions of dead trees in Northern California too along with areas of overgrown force that natural fires once kept in check the underlying conditions forest conditions. Are really similar and that we have a lot of forests that are simply way over ground with the u. S. Forest service has been inclined to let remote fires burn to reduce feels. The massive north complex fire above oroville as part of a berm the smoldering for weeks in the Plumas National forest but federal fire Officials Say that was an intentional instead they say federal firefighting capability was spread too thinly to get it under control. Cutting down dead trees and prescribed burns are used to reduce the spread of wildfires. But in the end wildfires react to weather conditions. Winds are high. Its really dry. Theres you know a lot of fuel on the ground there burning so catastrophic we because these are the conditions where we cant control that we must also have the Fire Prevention program called living with fire. Limited resources being targeting prevention can be put in a fuel break or prescribed fire around communities. Californias Sierra Nevada conservancy fun such targeted work, but with 25 million acres to oversee the work is moving slowly. Trees killed by bark beetles can stay standing for years, but they are ticking time bombs you have the very real potential for those trees to come down on the ground to make them even larger fires, the conservancy has the fun fuel. Clearing projects carefully with limited moneys its expensive. But i think what were seeing with the fires that are occurring right now. Were paying for it anyway. In sacramento lonnie wong. Well hear the latest containment numbers on wildfires that are burning in the bay area we have the lnu lightning complex thats in the north bay, its 95 contained. More than 363,000 acres have burned there. The scu complex fires in the east and south bay is up to 98 containment with nearly 397,000 acres burned and then we have the czu lightning complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties are up to 85 containment with more than 86,000 acres burned and then of course the woodward fire at the Point Reyes National seashore near and county is now 95 contained that fire has burned more than 4800 acres. Well even with the higher containment numbers for the czu fire there still hazard said officials want you to be aware of. I have had issues with looking lose people who want to stop and see whats going on which is its their community and theyre very interested in whats happening so its only understandable but when you do that sometimes youre not paying attention to where youre driving and we definitely weve got a good Safety Record right now and we definitely want to keep it that way not just with people who are working on cal fire incidents, but you know the other agencies as well theyre working on the roads and they ask you to slow down just please do so so that everybody can go home safely and no everybody works to support now dont be a look you lou, keep your eyes on the road cal fire also warned about hazardous trees that are in danger of falling. They also warn the people can fall into ash pits which are centered around the roots of the trees, the bigger trees thats where the fire still burning so be careful. Well coming up next on the kron 4 morning news, a sea turtle takes flight. Yeah there it is a look at his journey from canada to california ahead thats coming up this morning on flying a look outside at a very foggy and hazy San Francisco you see the bay bridge lights are twinkling there in the background its another spare the air day we just continue to set records every single day so if youre going out you want to exercise or walk or jog. But you really should be doing but make sure you have that mask on and be safe well be right back. Welcome back everyone not even the coronavirus could stop a sea turtle from going back home. It got stranded in canada and the journey back home was a bit challenging kron fours ken wayne has that story and this mornings flying tails. Miles and are we have that lasted almost a year is coming to an end and off the coast of san diego. This all of ridley sea turtle is about to be released back to its home. Theyre like dinosaurs they overcome so much. 6 of the 7 species threatened or endangered and they or just amazing animals. It was found on island hank aaron story. A condition called it starts. Its heart rate and circulation decreases leaving it so lethargic it can even swim. Its not unusual for marine animal to travel so far we with a lot of a release that have come from oregon Northern California. This is our first all really thats come from canada. Since he was found stranded near the town of support out bernie he was named bernie strand ers bernie was taken to the Vancouver Aquarium for rehab. Return to Southern California last winter with in covid happened and the border close. Finally about a week ago. Bernie was able to be driven across to seattle. Thats for you picked up by volunteer pilots with an Organization Called for a little while too. Is loaded up and into the sky. Their animal Care Specialist from seaworld took over to prepare burning for the last leg of his journey. Including prepping him for a gps tracker to monitor his recovery. About 7 miles off point loma at long last bernie strand ers was stranded. No more. He was returned home. The warm 74 degrees Southern California water. I mean this is definitely a wow factor we get to take this animal. And. And put it back in the ocean and hopefully it will thousands of miles and make more little olive ridley sea turtle babies can wane kron 4 news. All right, lets get a check of the forecast now we want to check in with john and see how the weather shaping up to date on the day there robin im a little jealous of bernie strand ers the air looks a little better in san diego this morning. Than what were seeing here in the bay area we have very smoky conditions and believe it or not even smoke here than what weve seen the past couple of days you can actually make that out from berkeley right here. Now the reason behind that is a couple days ago on wednesday, when we had the really bright colors smoke was sitting high aloft yesterday and sunk a bit lower and you likely noticed more and more of that smell into the close of the day yesterday. Now its sunk into the bay area itself and what were breathing in is all that smoke pushed in from not just Northern California wildfires. But if you zoom out a little bit weve also had smoke from oregon fires pushed offshore into the pacific. That is now made its way inland to this morning into the bay weve seen fog pushing inland that fog also has some smoke imbedded in it so its not just california fires, producing or smoke anymore, but also those blazes this Historic Places to our north up in oregon. And were going to be holding on to these poor conditions for much of the weekend ahead so again like i said last weekend we were dealing with the heat. This time around its the smoke, not the temperatures that well be keeping you inside imposing even more of a threat to your health so take it easy stay indoors as much as possible, especially today. Winds very calm dont just enough to be pushing some fog in from the pacific. But not enough to be mixing any of this poor air quality out so its going to be a slow go seeing any sort of improvements in the days ahead of us 60s for your highs on the peninsula today and really its just 60s and 70s regardless of how far inland you get. It will be another unseasonably cool one. And you guessed it the smoke playing a part in that preventing a lot of afternoon heating from occurring as its just blocking out the sun from reaching the ground as it typically would 60s and 70s from hayward over to livermore in fact the livermore san Ramon Danville walnut creek. These are the coolest temperatures youve had in months now daytime highs barely even in the 70s, really Cool Temperatures and he will definitely notice that feel stepping outside santa rosa at 70 degrees nevado and center fell at 68 for your highs today. Tomorrows temperatures will bounce up a little bit were likely to see less and less of that smoky impact as we make our way through the forecast but it is going to be quite gradual tomorrow just a bit better than today sunday, a bit better than saturday you get the picture gradual improvements as we have no big weather maker coming through that would stir out. Quickly any of the smoke that is settled with us. Robin. Lets take a look at the bay bridge were checking the traffic into San Francisco. It is foggy weve been telling about the dense fog this morning on the bay bridge. And the Golden Gate Bridge and we can see here how foggy it is you cant even see the atv overcrossing anymore so special alert issued by chp take it easy out there. No traffic problems as far as crashes or stalls coming in so under 10 minutes for the drive off to the golden gate one oh one across the span of foggy here to fog advisory remains in another reason to slow down space yourself out have those headlights and wipers on but were still moving at the no problems from the north bay, we have one more bridge. The richmond sandra fell between the north bay in and the east with only find here no problems just a couple of cars rolling through the pay gates so all is well under 10 minutes to make it into the north bay. Well the nfl season is back on and local sports bars are beginning to welcome back football fans so we want to create the greenery sports bar and grill is now serving customers outside. Now this is allowed under the Contra Costa CountyHealth Orders but with the start of the football season, the Business Owner tells us that shes just trying to figure out the best way to show the games outside. Sports coming up were trying to figure out whats next. Do we try to do tvs outside is it even worth it. You know should we just keep going or should we stop should. We did take out only these are questions on all of our minds i believe. Taking one day at a time last nights nfl game was between the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans the chiefs beat the texans 3420. Well now the niners are getting ready for football on sunday, they will be hosting the Arizona Cardinals at levi stadium. We this is video from the last time the 2 team plays played here at home in santa clara. The niners are favorites in sundays game boasting a better offense and defense and the cardinals homefield advantage might take a hit because you know no fans are allowed there on the stand so thats a different feel. The of the stadium will pumping in some fake crowd noise not to say it will be fake but at least well have some cheery. The kickoff is at one 25 sunday afternoon go 9 now lets talk about the bay area baseball the as continue to roll winning 4 games out of 5, 5, game series against the astros at the coliseum in game 5 yesterday matt olson drills a 2 run home run or to write feel that play gave the as the lead in the 6th inning and then over in the 9th inning. The astros they try to make a comeback a comeback with the hit into center field. But ramon areas right there hes there to make a spectacular catch to end the game so the as beat the astros 3 one. They now have a commanding 6 and a half game lead in the American League west division, go ace about the giants, the giants are on the road in san diego. They are taking on the pont raise, but giants game 5 that game 5 ninning streak was broken yesterday, the padres took an early lead and just never looked back so they beat the giants 6 one however we have game to game 2 of the series is tonight and thats at 16 gotye all right look outside before we head to break a cloudy asaph oh there it is covered in clouds and fog this morning so just double check your flight status before you head over because were going to be dealing with this throughout the afternoon. No reports of any major delays right now but well have an update on weather and well see how the traffic is moving along that stretch coming up in just a bit. Welcome back for 55 on this friday morning wont be the best weekend for venturing outside yet again last weekend it was the heat. Now it is the smoke which is actually worse this morning than what weve seen the past couple of days because its sinking down into the day now youre definitely breathing it in as youre stepping outside at any point this upcoming friday. It can definitely see smoke and fog and San Francisco and a cooler start to the day than where we have been Half Moon Bay is in the upper 40s right now 50s and just a couple low 60s on the map like an antioch nevado San Francisco, Half Moon Bay much cooler than at the same time yesterday and well keep that cool weather around into the afternoon with san jose oakland and San Francisco. All only in the 60s for your daytime highs. Robin. All right sounds good. Thank you john coming up in the next hour, the red orange hue has gone from our skies but air quality is terrible all across the bay area will have Team Coverage on conditions coming up in just a bit and today marks 19 years since the 9. 11 terror attacks, how the u. S. Is honoring the victims differently this year because of the pandemic while San Francisco goes virtual due to the poor air quality. Youre watching kron 4 morning news at 5. Good morning. Im so excited to see what happens today along with you im darya folsom and im James Fletcher yeah, this is friday september 11th, weve got a lot september 11th. Ceremonies will be covering for you today and of course keeping updated on the fire and the smoke in the air quality which seems to be getting worse and worse with each day going to say its anybodys guess but john is already predicting that today is going to be the worst errol any that weve seen good, i know look at it already and purple now been james the thing is i was just thinking. The Golden Gate Bridge like one or 2 feet i could see and for me is terrible but otherwise pretty clear so i a little bit better now dont think thats going to john it felt cooler out there like oh it must be the ocean breeze but like youre saying yesterday thats just bringing in all the smoke that settled out in the ocean so were just going to end getting a double whammy exactly guys it is the worst air quality of the week which is hard to believe looking at the skies the past couple of days. But that smoke is settled in with us and youre exactly right james, any sort of smoke that sitting out in the pacific is only getting pushed in with the fog this morning. So its not a refreshing
