Welcome back. Were continuing to follow that massive wildfires burning in valley. As weve been reporting a is bring you the town of la hina. 6 people have died. Our ken wayne joins us now for an update. Can. Im vicki and grant it. Heres what we know. Want to show you a map of hawaii that shows the actual fire zones when take that now, this is a honolulu on the island of oahu. The real problem is on the island of maui and the worst of it is right here in la hina. This red satellite image shows the fire zone area and this area, this trip here just south of what is called baby beach is the heart of la hina. And you can see its all red. If youve been there. So many people from the bay area go to maui and youre almost guaranteed when you go to run into somebody from the bay area, whos there on vacation as well or has a second home. But this is old right here. Places like the cheeseburger in jimmy buffet place. Fleetwood has bar and restaurant right in here. And of course, theres the famous banyan tree park that is also in this area. We dont know the status of the banyan tree itself, but it certainly right in this area and there are a number dozens and dozens of buildings damaged and destroyed by the fire all the way through here. And to give you a little more perspective, this is kind of polly right here. The stretch of hotels here. You know, you work your way up the coast all the way up toward pili bay. And so on, those places appeared to be safe. For now, the worst of it is in la hina population of about 10,000 people or so. But then you throw in a bunch of tourists as well. And the population is a lot more than that. This is the back country. Part of maui, mostly some dairy farms and such out there. There may be some buildings have been damaged or destroyed in this area. We dont have anything on that yet and appears where the airport is and were flying in there. Just want to show you one other small area of the big island where there is some fire damage. This is a resort area called mauna kea beach here on the northwest shore of the big island that has some damage as well. But the heart of it, the worst of it. And its sad to say a lot of la hina is now destroyed because of these fires. But were still waiting for the assessment. We dont have any specific information on particular structures in la hina communications, our very bad, no cell service in many cases, no internet. And so its just really hard to get information out right now. All of that is being worked on. Well get more information hour by hour. But the initial assessment not good for la hina. Back to you. And so heartbreaking. Banyan tree planted in the 18. 100s. Thank you for that. And well continue to monitor the impact these fires on our website at kron 4 dot com. If you scan the qr code on your screen, it will bring you to the latest information on the toll this terrible fire is taking as well as up to date evacuation orders and search and rescue efforts. U. We are also counting on members of congress to be present in hearings and asked hard questions that get better governance. Back for u. S. Senator feinstein has said she will not seek reelection in 2024. But hes shown no appetite to resign early with 3 members of congress vying for her position. Theres also been mostly silence among democratic lawmakers. About stepping down early and letting the governor appoints someone. One unusual feature here is that we have a senate race already underway for 2024. And so it, you know, i think part of the the reason, you know i think a lot of democrats maybe arent so keen to encourage the senator to step aside is is that the question of who would replace or is seen as quite fraught and with Governor Newsom appointed caretaker who doesnt run again when he fulfilled a pledge to appoint a black woman to the position. The senate is currently on its august recess. Representatives for feinstein say she plans to return when the Senate Reconvenes in september. Dan kerman kron, 4 news.
