Now to our top story here at 602. And the death toll has unfortunately gone up in maui. Now at least 55 people confirmed dead in those devastating wildfires that have ravaged that hawaiian island. And now there are questions about hawaiis Emergency Warning System. Some say that it didnt alert them to the oncoming danger. Kron fours. Michael thomas is live in the newsroom with the latest. Michael. You know, these stories of survivors not really knowing about the fire matches up with what they told me yesterday at the airport when they landed. And this morning were learning that hawaiis famous Emergency Warning System didnt even go off at all during these wildfires before those. 55 people lost their lives. Take a look at how parts of maui look right now. Just a horrific in total. More than 1000 structures have been destroyed with the rising death count of 55 as crews are still on the ground searching for survivors. Many tell us they had no idea there was even a fire happening until they saw smoke heard an explosion and had to run. And according to hawaiis Emergency Management records, theres no indication that the warning sirens went off at all or were even triggered. State Officials Say they did instead send out emergency text alerts at to cell phones along with tv and radio warnings. But keep in mind the power there was out shortly after the fire started and sell signal is still spotty today. People say they look for shelter anywhere and that included the ocean as they watch their homes in the city. They know would love burned to the ground. People are found in houses in a huddle each other because the fire surrounded homes before they could even get out. Theres no way to go. And these are Beautiful Homes that are very old and in foot up like a matchstick. Nobody had morning. Now red cross is on the ground helping aid the situation along with multiple california agencies. And when it comes to the preparation, maui fire officials have for an event like this. Well, they say theres only 65 fire crew members on duty at a time in maui and theyre responsible for 3 islands and have no offroad vehicles that led to many roadblocks. And during this time, the deadliest Natural Disaster hawaii has seen was back in 1960, during the tsunami which killed 61 people on the big island. Right now, the death toll is at 55 and is expected to rise, which would make this the deadliest Natural Disaster hawaii has ever seen. Meantime, california crews are on the way to help fight the flames in hawaii, including a member of the oakland fire departments, fema urban search and rescue task force. The acting fire chief says that oftentimes in cases like this First Responders are also victims. So the group is going to do whatever it can. And sometimes when we go into these communities, the people that are running their office of Emergency Services are suffering tragic losses as well. So if they cant do their job, were going to support them. 7 of the rules. And we know we want to take over, but we want to support them and ensuring that the community is getting what they need and that thats the recovery phase. And a k 9 unit is also at work helping to find bodies and make sure that theyre turned over to their families. The chief says that team well be there as long as needed. Well, the destruction caused by the wildfires there on the island of maui has many looking for a way to help the White Chamber of commerce of Northern California says that theyre still coordinating local relief efforts. And in the meantime, theyre referring people to the Hawaii Community foundations, maui, strong fund. You see that on the screen there asking for money. This is the same charity recommended by the hawaii governors office. The American Red Cross is also seeking monetary donations to and theyre leading the efforts right now to help evacuees as those whove lost their homes in the fires have nowhere else to go. Volunteers are they going out to assist with south stream with being out in the community . Crews are going to be conducting wildfire training. Its going to take place at the painted rock land trust at raga geological hazard abatement district. Union Pacific Railroad crews are making to tracks along washington avenue thursday in the southern part of town. We all know rail. And vehicles and pedestrians dont always interact. Well, and this intersection is no different than other intersections. Poses greater risk because of the angle at which the rail road tracks cross the roadway. The tracks are being fully replaced. The street is closed that chapman road and will remain off limits all day and night. Through at least sunday, the improvements here will make the rail traffic move more smoothly.
