Reporter good evening, as Law Enforcement in sutherland springs, texas try to search for answers in the now grieving community where 26 lives were lost, the Texas Governor greg abbot said in part today i ask for every mom and dad tonight that you put your arm around your kid and give them a big hug and let you know how much you love them. The governor called it the deadliest mass shooting in the states history. The white wood framed Baptist Church was a focal point for the community. Located 30 miles southeast of san antonio, just after 11 30 local time, the day of worship quickly turned into a day of horror. The shooter was identified by lou Law Enforcement as 26year old devin kelley, his victims ranging in age from 5 to 72 years old. Among the victims, the 14year old daughter of the churchs pastor frank pomeroy. The pastor and his wife were traveling out of state when the shooting took place. Meanwhile overseas, President Trump monitoring the situation said this. This act of evil occurred as the victims and their families were in their place of sacred worship. We cannot put into words the pain and grief we all feel, and we cannot begin to imagine the suffering of those who lost the ones they so dearly loved. Our hearts are broken, but in dark times, and these are dark times, such as these, americans do what they do best, we pull together. Reporter were learning more about how to day of the day of terror unfolded. The shooter was across the street at a gas station, and wearing all black tactical gear. He left his vehicle and started firing at the church. He continued to fire as he walked inside, spraying the congregation. As he left the church, the gunman was confronted by a local resident, dropped his Assault Rifle and fled in a vehicle. Local Police Chased the suspect who crashed his vehicle and later was found dead. He ran off the roadway and crashed out and was found deceased in his vehicle. At this time we dont know if it was a selfinflicted gunshot wound or if he was shot by a local resident. Reporter several people were air lifted to local hospitals. 23 people died inside the church, 2 killed outside, and 1 died on the way to the hospital. Others are hanging on to life, with injuries moderate to severe. Shocked Church Members gathered waiting for word on friends and family. Theres no words. Theres just, this happened in new york and big cities, now no one is safe. Reporter the atf, local, state and federal Law Enforcement with all part of investigation. And theyre looking into the gunmans social media posts. At this point it doesnt appear he was connected the any organized to any organized terrorist group. The House Minority leader released a statement saying quote as we mourn the lives cruelly cut short today, we have to respond not only with prayer and unwavering love, but with action. Much more needs to be done in the congress to make sure no other family is forced to endure such an unimaginable tragedy. A congressman said helpless were the worshipers as a mad man sprayed bullets into their sanctuary, not helpless is congress. Now to San Francisco where the defense is going to have its turn in the kate steinly case. The defense will start presenting its case to the jury tomorrow. Prosecutors rested their case on thursday, almost two weeks after the opening statements. They argue that illegal immigrant garcia intentionally fired the bullet that struck her along the water front and should be convicted of Second Degree murder. The defense maintains the bullet ricocheted and the shooting was an accident. The San Francisco police union is considering taking the issue of tasers to the voters to get them rolled out sooner. The Police Commission approved them friday, but delayed implementation until next december, and the commissioners didnt devil into policy. Police Officers Association president commends the commission for takingenings, but says taking action, but says he wants a use policy drafted within 30 days, and if not hell leave it up to the voters to decide. Polling numbers indicate that over 78 percent of residents of San Francisco want sfpd officers to be equipped with the state of the art equipment, which is tasers. Theyll reduce injuries to the public, to the police officers, and it will save lives. Activists and Police Critics have raised concerns about potential abuses and medical impacts. The weapons have been long debated in the city, making San Francisco one of the last major cities in the country without them. More than 100 nurses and Community Leaders gathered today to protest the planned closure of alta bates hospital in berkeley. Ley. Sutter health has until 2030 to comply with seismic upgrades, but theyve said they want to expand the campus in oakland. Many say closing the only emergency room in berkeley will have a negative impact on the commune. Its home to almost 40,000 students, this is the emergency room for the university of california, so were very, very concerned about the impact it will have on the health and safety of our residents. The Oakland City Council is also on record opposing the closure. The San FranciscoUnified School District reached a tentative agreement with the Teachers Union just days before the union played to hold a strike vote on planned to hold a strike vote on wednesday. It includes a salary bump of 16 percent over a threeyear period, and the most experienced teachers could receive a six figure salary after the pay raises. Highway patrol is investigating a crash involving a charter bus that sent two passengers to the hospital. It happened about 6 00 this morning in san mateo. The bus was making the transition from southbound highway 101 to westbound 92 when it hit a guardrail. 7 passengers were on board coming from the cash creek casino. Two passengers were taken to the hospital, but they are expected to be okay. North bay fire victims were treated to a shopping spree this afternoon, all free. Just between friends is a childrens and maternity consignment pop up. Today with the help of nonprofit active 2030, they outfitted dozens of people effected by the fires with extra donations from compliants. I came from a clients. The difference here is were basically saying instead of using a Tax Deduction to lower your tax rate and liability, well make it so you dont pay taxes in the first place, but its a clear middle class tax cut. While they take us deeply into debt to the tune of almost 3 trillion, the next 10 years, and we have to always account for 20 years, the next 10 years is a hemorrhaging of the national debt. Reporter today paul ryan pushed back on the debt and said in the long run the plan will actually help congress tackle the deficit by giving the economy a boost. And again he said hes feeling really good about them being able to get this done by the end of the year, and that starts tomorrow when the house ways and Means Committee begins to mark the bill up, so well likely see sol changes worked into the bill over the next couple of weeks. Were learning more tonight about the assault on kentucky senator rand paul, and his injuries are more serious than initially thought. Officials say paul is recovering from five broken ribs after a neighbor tackled him from behind. That neighbor was arrested. The two apparently had a dispute, but at the time nature of it hasnt been revealed. A Senior Advisor says senator paul is in considerably pain and has difficulty getting around. Its unclear when hell return to washington. Assaulting a member of congress is a federal crime. We have a first look tonight at the exclusive interview. We sat down with him one on one at the jail where hes awaiting trial on 36 counts of manslaughter. During the nearly twohour interview he said that reports of the warehouse being a cluttered and dangerous mess were exaggerated, and he also said the ghost ship was no secret, and that Child Protective Services had even visited and approved of his children living there. Well, a definitely have to say that if you go to any construction site until the house is done or building or whatever, its going to be an organized mess. In the beginning i was going out and, you know, i would get an old like car and i would bring it into the yard and take off the fender and hub caps until darryl loaded up the parts we didnt want and the get them out of there, there would be a little mess. Thats why we got a warehouse with a giant yard and space. So for cps to fly my children back and threw a party for us, ask give us awards, and you came out and check out our story action and youre an artist, and they have kitchen and bathroom and tubs and a play room, you have like a house here and an amazing dance studio, music studio, digital arts lab.
