Zuckerberg San Francisco general last night at some point in time and died at 1 11 am. The acting mayor london breed came out and red a brief statement this morning around 3 38 am, confirming that the mayor had passed away. She said the citys thoughts and prayers were with the mayors wife and daughters and with his entire family. In accordance with city charter, the board of supervisors president london breed is now the acting mayor of San Francisco. She was sworn in earlier this morning. We are here in the city will be holding another press availability around 10 am, possibly offering more insight into what may have happened. We can tell you there was a sense of profound sadness here at zuckerberg when we first arrived. There were some city hall staffers here who were visibly shaken at the sudden news of the mayors passing at this point in time no one here is speaking. We are anticipating a 10 am press conference to learn more about what may have happened. As we have now heard, ed lee was brought here last night with some kind of serious medical condition. He passed away at 1 11 am with his wife and family by his side. Back to you. Christien kafton outside the hospital. We will keep checking in with you. We are all still in shock hearing that San Francisco mayor ed lee has died. People who knew him and worked closely with him are on the phone with me. Right now we have San Francisco supervisor tom on the elmo. Can you hear me . I can hear you. Reporter i appreciate getting up and talking to me. What was your reaction . I think the shock when these tragedies occur your mind is like a kaleidoscope. It goes all over the place i think the priority for now is his family and giving his family and supporters our respect we do take a break from politics as usual. All of that will fall into place. I know someone asked me about the legacy for ed lee and i think the strongest one would be that he was our first asian mayor. I think that meant a lot to a lot of people, certainly to our own asian community. I know that right now people are very concerned if we are in shock, what his wife and children must be feeling. I think he was also a grandfather. Im not sure. I know family was important to him. A very passionate man. As a political leader in San Francisco i know you dont always agree with the people that you work with and interact with. But how was he to interact with for you . We first knew each other when i was supervisor. He was working for the city in a very highly placed position. He was the chief Administrative Officer and then he was in charge of the dpw. In that role, ed was very affable. He could be very helpful. Sometimes the relationship with the mayor and the supervisor wasnt always good but as a department head, you always felt that ed was someone who was open to your ideas and helping. All the changes when someone becomes a mayor, as you know in San Francisco, politics is a blood sport. Basically, he was in a lot of peoples minds, up into the time he was elected mayor, he was someone who knew how City Government work in terms of nuts and bolts. And someone who might be helpful to you in implementing policy in his position as a department head. Supervisor, i have to ask you, San Francisco as a whole, its position not all in the nation but around the world, what impact will this have . Well, i think particularly with the unfortunate situation in washington, cities like San Francisco with their sanctuary status and other progressive ideas is vulnerable to a lot of scrutiny and a lot of pressure. How we deal with that in the upcoming days, i think it will be a mark of how San Francisco deals with this. This is, unfortunately, reminiscent of another time when another mayor was murdered as well as supervisor harvey milk and how shocking that was. And then the shift in City Government from that mayor and harvey milk to Dianne Feinsteins mayor. I think for some of us who have been around for a long time we cant help but think of that situation as well and we know how important it is to respect the feelings of the family. I appreciate you taking the time to come on mornings on 2 to talk to us. Thank you very much, sergei kislyak. It is quite a morning. We will take a look back to the day, january 11, 2011, when ed lee was sworn in as the interim mayor of San Francisco replacing gavin newsom when he was elected lieutenant governor. Amberley was there for that event. Reporter the board of supervisors voted unanimously to select the 58yearold ed lee to become the interim mayor. The swearingin ceremony on the steps of the rotunda in front of dignitaries along with hundreds of citizens filling every balcony to get a glimpse of the new mayor. I, edwin m. Lee do solemnly swear reporter the mayor said he plans to hit the ground running tomorrow and start tackling at 360 million budget deficit and hiring a new police chief. He says hes honored to become the citys First Chinese american mayor but he is a mayor for all people. I will do my very, very best to represent all of the communities that you live in, that we cherish that make this city a great city. Reporter with asians making up 31 of the population, Community Leaders say there is a strong sense of pride. This is been a milestone for the asian community. A long time coming. Reporter after the ceremony, ed lee greeted supporters during a reception. He describes himself as once being antiestablishment when he started his career as a civil rights attorney working for the asian law caucus. Now he says hes working with the establishment to open doors for everyone. I love this city and were not going backwards. That was amberley reporting. A little while ago here on mornings on 2, i spoke with amberley at the top of the hour. She talked about some of her memories of covering the mayor over the years among other things. She talked about being proud of ed lee as the first Asian American lawyer mayor of San Francisco and talked about his passion for the city and its people.
