The hey center of this week, ali is at the epicenter, what youre hearing . We are hearing from people who felt it and no heavy damage. Nothing fell over, thats the good news, and were at ashley and college. We have driven by china shops and were closer to the Claremont Hotel. Weve been talking to people and people have been coming up and telling us theyve been up since 2 39 this morning when this 4. 4 magnitude earthquake happened. It happened quickly in the claremont canyon area of the Berkeley Hills. We talked to the owner of a doughnut shop. Hes been here since 1987. He experienced the 89 earthquake and he said this is no comparison. This was a minor, minor little jolt. It was definitely noticeable. Heres how he described it. Its like, you know, somebody is knocking it back a little bit. I saw a sign was moving. Okay, here we go again. Reporter again no damage at this shop or anywhere else that weve seen in some of the shops here in berkeley, in elmwood closer to the Claremont Hotel. People have come into the doughnut shop, theyve been up since 2 39 this morning and people said they werent able to go back to be sleep afterwards, there may be sleep deprived people today. People have been up since the earlymorning hours. A lot of people, i know you grew up in the bay area and others comparing it to big earthquakes as well. I think thats kind of the national thing that we do, any time theres an earthquake, you think back to be the one that made an impression on you, and i was here for the 89 earthquake as well. Everyone else is saying, this is no comparison. It was definitely enough to wake a lot of people up. Just before you go, tell us what you were doing this morning when the quake hit . I was already awake, because i was up for my regular work shift anyway, and i was walking into my kids room, tucking them in again and thats when it i felt like i could hear it before i felt and i would describe it as standing next to a big semi truck or a dump truck drives past you, you felt the vibrations in the floor and before i knew it it was over. The little one stayed asleep, right . They did, i think i may have been a little startled by it. I think i may have had a little yelp and that is what woke up my kids, not the earthquake. Its the working parents worse fear that they wake up while you have to go to work. I jumped out of bed, i was half a wake already, the earthquake was ending and the little ones slept through it. Right on through. Our too many is 5 04, lets go to Steve Paulson. You say this is not earthquake weather. This will talk about sunny and warm being the only earthquake weather. It can happen under any conditions, guys. If youre in the santa cruz area, youre the leader of the pack. Socal and capitol had good rain, foster city, oakland, oakland hills, piedmont, san mateo to concord pavillion and other areas to the north marin county, theyre generally under a 10th of an inch, the main front has gone through, here comes another low level moisture, its picking up here. This can be a steady drizzle or light rain, this is picking up San Francisco or marin county, santa rosa and parts of northern napa county as well. Whats done is very light, it could be persistent. Watch for fog, especially to the east. We had both hands on the wheel coming in. In the seer rap theres mainly rain and a little bit of snow in the higher elevations, the next system will be here tonight into friday. 60s on the temperatures. 5o05 and im on the phone with johnny. Hes my friend, and he knows bart, and johnny, can i call you back, im on the air right now. He says i sure can. He says the trains are still going to be 15 to 20 minutes late, but they were late by 20 or 30 minutes, but he says the delays are being beginning to unwind on the system and the reason is because they had to check the tracks earlier to make sure there was no damage, no damage has been found. I think were going to be okay. I have to call johnny back after this report. Johnny im sorry i have to cut you off there. This is how many we get the news, sometimes we make phone calls. The Oakland Police department was requested to 7th and chester which is this area directly at over my shoulder. There was a shooting and this was a bart officer. Two men were exchanging words. This was basically an argument between two guys and they got into a shooting. Where were they where did it start . By the barbershop. The heated argument quickly escalated. One of them shot my friend in the leg and police shot and killed him, the guy who shot him in the leg. They heard the dispute and they came down the street shooting. We recovered a firearm from the scene. There are a lot of questions in the community and we want to answer those questions. As we go through the investigation, were able to provide more information, well share that with you. Because the shooting took place on city streets, the police are handling the criminal investigation and bart police are conducting their own investigation as well and the alameda District Attorneys who was has been notified. S been notified. Across the bay, San Francisco police are searching for a man on was wearing and santa hat when he fired shots at a car full of people last week. This happened in the tenderloin district two days after christmas, you can see here it was captured on swerved, you see the man in the santa hat talking to people inside of a black car that was stopped at mason and eddie street. He shoots into the vehicle and the man backs away and he puts the gun away and he walks away. The motive for the shooting is unclear, but one man who lives across the street tells us what he heard. We continue of the earthquake, we are getting calls into the newsroom that people felt the 4. 4 magnitude earthquake and the epicenter was in Berkeley Hills, and people felt it all over the bay area. Well show you the shake map, this is based on reports of people who felt the earthquake. That little golden star in the center is where the epicenter was, the earthquake was a shallow one, 8 miles deep, thats likely the reason why so many people felt it so far away. We still havent heard of any reports of serious damage from the earthquake, were still going to cover the earthquake here and online. And President Trump is going after steve bannon, theyre saying stop disparaging the trump family after his release of his new book. Reporter he thought to betray himself with his power behind the throne. And what he wrote about donald trump junior has made the president furious. Mr. Trump and the company here by demand you cease and desist from confidential information, disparagement of mr. Trump and his family members. This is, that during the campaign, his meeting with the russian lawyer was treasonous and unpatriotic. I think furious and disgusted would the white house secretary said the president was angry, he put out a statement, steve bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind. The accusations sting as special Counsel Robert Mueller investigates whether there was collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia. This will earn bannon a lot of trouble, he doesnt have a lawyer and he has no interest in this stuff, he has an interest in it now. This could be the tip of the iceberg, this book is set to be released next week. President trumps former Campaign ManagerPaul Manafort is suing special Counsel Robert Mueller and the justice system. He says Robert Mueller exceeded his authority for investigating him on subjects that were beyond his dust jurisdiction. He was indicted on conspiracy and Money Laundering and he pled not guilty. 5 17, lets look at the traffic and may this have a lingering effect, this earthquake. Bart is 15 minutes behind, they were behind as much as 30 minutes earlier. Were looking at the commutes, the commutes look good, northbound 101 between morgan hill and san jose. Bart is getting back on track. If you havent woken up and havent hit bart, by the time you get to the bart station, you wont notice it unless you time the trains exactly. Some people do and some people catch the next train. This is a look at, you can see the bay area. Youre looking everywhere for slow traffic, we dont have any right now. Right now, northbound is looking good and this is a little lighter than usual, a normal day at 5 18, the metering lights are on, we might have a lighter day again, were seeing light traffic, 5 18, lets bring steve in, we have been talking about fog and rain, light rain, sal, its tell there. Nothing is going on this morning. Theres a lot besides that east coast storm, we had the shaker overnight, berkeley 4. 4 was the magnitude there, 8 miles as dave talked about that the depth of that at 2 39 and that puts it in the light category. 4. 4 is between 4. 0 and 4. 9, thats not what it might have felt like to you, but thats where its classified. Rainfall, good for some and not so much for others. Look at santa cruz mounds and proper as well. Foster city and oakland area, oakland hills, san carlos and concord and union city. 56 and good rain in walnut creek and rossmore and cupertino, blackhawk, american canyon, this is where it tails off. You couldnt get and quarter of an inch. Marin county, the most was. 09, and one observation, and we only had. 02. There was a line and light rain continues, a light rain or missed or drizzle, and thats setting up in San Francisco to marin county, this will move into lake county. That will continue. In sierra its a warmer system, not a lot of snow except at the higher elevations. Temperatures are very mild, temperatures and dew points have come together, a lot of moisture in the area, theres upper 40s and low 50s and very thick fog parts of the east bay, watch out for that. And light rain until the city north. You can see a little bit respective snow and a lot of green there. The system will give us light rain and the next one comes in tomorrow. And this looks better for the golden gates. Its mild with southeast breeze, if you get sun breaks, some will, it can be the upper 50s to 70, a break on the weekend, it looks like a good system on tuesday. Okay, steve, thanks. The time is 5 20, we have a magnitude 4. 4 earthquake this morning, 2 39, the epicenter was in the Berkeley Hills. Joining us is the geo physicist, keith from the u. S. Geological center. Was there any warning, theres an Earthquake Lab where europe the peninsula, any warning about this mornings earthquake . No, i dont think so, you may have heard about a new program called shake alert or earthquake Early Morning, it right now is in production, were not issuing public april letters, and for this event, since its relatively small, we probably wouldnt have issued an alert even if that system had been up and public. What would you say to people and i am still getting messages from people who are saying it scared me awake, we didnt go back to sleep, what would you say to them about what kind of quake we had this morning . Id say that this is business as usual. This is a reminder were in earthquake country and rather than be scared, take the occurrence of this event as impetus as work to be better prepared. I know weve been told by other scientists to be prepared for smaller after shocks, is there a possibility that there could be a precursor to a larger earthquake in the coming days . Yes, there is. Thats always the case. If you look at the his try, historically at the history in california, they have them afterwards, and it applies for the next several tails. Any event could be seen and it could be an indication that a larger event is going to happen. Thats a low probability though. Is there any, you know, Science Behind the idea some have, ill take a few small or moderate earthquakes, theyll loosen things up and help prevent the big one. Yeah, you probably wont hear many Scientists Say that, the reason is they will take thousands and thousands of smaller earthquakes to reduce the string thats been accumulating in the earths crust. We could have lots of magnitudes 3s and 4s, that would not affect the likelihood or the time between big earthquakes. Before you go, was this on and fault and also we know it was 8 miles deep, does that mean in a the coming quakes may change its depth . You know be deeper or less deep . So, i missed the first part of your question, but yeah, the preliminary indications that this was a relatively deep earthquake for the hayward fault, but not that unusual, thats one of the things as after shocks occur, the after shocks tend to illuminate or light up the part of the fault that ruptured. We will learn which part of the hayward fault ruptured as after shocks occur, assuming they do occur. And the hayward fault is really the one that is targeted to have the biggest earthquake in the coming decades, isnt it . Its a little dangerous to say that but we look at records of past earthquakes and seismicity and we doll the 30 year forecasts and theres and we do the 30year forecasts and theres a forecast that we could have a big one in the next 30 years. That study was released in a couple of years ago. The hayward fault is one we think is a fault most likely to produce a big earthquake in the bay area. Did this one wake you up . Yeah, i live in albany, so, we were shaking pretty well. All right. Keith newsome from the usgs, its good to have the voice of calm and science in the morning when so many people are very upset. Again, we have to mention, no reports of any major damage or injury as a result of this. Well take a break now, well be right back. Woman so, greg, its a lot to take in. Woman 2 and i know thats hard to hear, but the doctors caught it early. Hi, blake my dad has cancer. Woman and i know how hard that is to hear. But youre in the right place. Man and dr. Pascal and her team, they know what to do. They know what to do. The doctors know what to do. So heres the plan. First off, were going to give you all. voice fading away google is being sued by women who say theyre not being paid as the same as men. They asked new hires about their salaries at previous jobs, something that is banned in california. This was dismissed last night for defining workers jobs too loosely. Loosely. And the warriors took on the mavericks. Steph curry from fort worth. Steph curry was hot and he led the warriors. They combined for 100 points and the came down to the wire with steph curry with the ball. Had is a freebie, 3, good he hit his spot. So, steph curry hit the game winner, they sneak out of dallas with that win, despite that last second heroic shot by curry, they admitted they didnt play their best last night. We walked a fine line between cape osceola and disorder, and were at our best when we can be loose and free, but we have to have the discipline that goes along with that. When we do that, we find that balance, were really hard to beat. Yeah, and the mavericks look good too. Especially harrison barns. The warriors will play the Houston Rockets tonight at 5 00.
