Weve been talking to people and people have been coming up and telling us theyve been up since 2 39 this morning when this 4. 4 magnitude earthquake happened. It happened quickly in the claremont canyon area of the Berkeley Hills. We talked to the owner of a doughnut shop. Hes been here since 1987. He experienced the 89 earthquake and he said this is no comparison. This was a minor, minor little jolt. It was definitely noticeable. Heres how he described it. Its like, you know, somebody is knocking it back a little bit. I saw a sign was moving. Okay, here we go again. Reporter again no damage at this shop or anywhere else that weve seen in some of the shops here in berkeley, in elmwood closer to the Claremont Hotel. People have come into the doughnut shop, theyve been up since 2 39 this morning and people said they werent able to go back to be sleep afterwards, there may be sleep deprived people today. People have been up since the earlymorning hours. A lot of people, i know you grew up in the bay area and others comparing it to big earthquakes as well. I think thats kind of the national thing that we do, any time theres an earthquake, you think back to be the one that made an impression on you, and i was here for the 89 earthquake as well. Everyone else is saying, this is no comparison. It was definitely enough to wake a lot of people up. Just before you go, tell us what you were doing this morning when the quake hit . I was already awake, because i was up for my regular work shift anyway, and i was walking into my kids room, tucking them in again and thats when it i felt like i could hear it before i felt and i would describe it as standing next to a big semi truck or a dump truck drives past you, you felt the vibrations in the floor and before i knew it it was over. The little one stayed asleep, right . They did, i think i may have been a little startled by it. I think i may have had a little yelp and that is what woke up my kids, not the earthquake. A Police Officer responded to gunfire and discharged his weapon. Two men were left injured, one dead and another in serious condition. Its not clear who fired the fatal shot. The Oakland Police department was requested to 7th and chester which is this area directly at over my shoulder. There was a shooting and this was a bart officer. Two men were exchanging words. This was basically an argument between two guys and they got into a shooting. Where were they where did it start . By the barbershop. The heated argument quickly escalated. One of them shot my friend in the leg and police shot and killed him, the guy who shot him in the leg. They heard the dispute and they came down the street shooting. We recovered a firearm from the scene. There are a lot of questions in the community and we want to answer those questions. Because the shooting took place on city streets, the police are handling the criminal investigation and bart police are conducting their own investigation as well and the alameda District Attorneys who was has been notified. S been notified. Across the bay, San Francisco police are searching for a man on was wearing and santa hat when he fired shots at a car full of people last week. This happened in the tenderloin district two days after christmas, you can see here it was captured on swerved, you see the man in the santa hat talking to people inside of a black car that was stopped at mason and eddie street. He shoots into the vehicle and the man backs away and he puts the gun away and he walks away. The motive for the shooting is unclear, but one man who lives across the street tells us what he heard. And the hayward fault is really the one that is targeted to have the biggest earthquake in the coming decades, isnt it . Its a little dangerous to say that but we look at records of past earthquakes and seismicity and we doll the 30 year forecasts and theres and we do the 30year forecasts and theres a forecast that we could have a big one in the next 30 years. That study was released in a couple of years ago. The hayward fault is one we think is a fault most likely to produce a big earthquake in the bay area. Did this one wake you up . And we have a map based on people who felt the quake. People felt the quake as far north as katady and far north as gilroy. The quake hit at a depth of 8 miles and thats why it was felt so far away. We havent heard of any serious damage yet. Well stay on this and well continue to cover this throughout mornings on 2. Meantime at 5 33, the severely cold weather this morning, its freezing in the northeast. Some parts of the northeast may get a foot of snow. Temperatures in the Single Digits and well below 0 are expected to follow creating a dangerous mix that could mean dangerous recovery, and caroline is live at Rehoboth Beach in delaware. It hit at 2 39 this morning, the epicenter was in the Berkeley Hills near the Claremont Hotel. People all over the bay area felt it. A little while ago we talked to a scientist with the usgs who said this quake was on the hayward fault. This is the shake map. This is on the usgs website, its based on where people felt this quake, it hit a depth of 8 miles, its considered shallow, that may be why it was felt so far away. We havent heard of any serious damage from this mornings quake. Well stay on to of it. Well continue to cover this on mornings on 2. 900,000 will be paid for penalties for air pollution violations. This happened not far from the Claremont Hotel. The accident happened at 2 39am and people all over the area felt it. There were reports from people who felt the earthquake. We got so many calls from people who felt the earthquake, some as far north as katady and some as far south as gilroy. Some called the shaking as strong. This is considered a shallow quake. It may shall the reason it was felt so far away. And we havent heard of any problems on bart. They checked their tracks and theyre back on track, if you will. Amtrak said more than 300 passengers were on that train going from miami to new york, when two sleeper cars and a baggage car jumped the tracks.
