But earlier witnesses describe a scary and chaotic scene. Gunshots rang out at busy tan ror fan mall in san bruno around 4 00 p. M. Tuesday, a popular spot for families. Police say two men armed with guns started shooting near the food court. I heard about one loud shot and then about eight after all within, like, ten second. It was a pause in between the two shots and the rest of them. So it was like pop, pop. And then it was a pause and then there was pop pop pop pop pop pop. Reporter Staff SergeantIsaiah Locklear was working at the u. S. Army recruiting Office Inside the mall when he heard the shots. Locklear says he ran towards the commotion and saw the 16yearold boy who had been shot in the stomach. Hes, like, laying on the floor. Like waiving his arms like ive been shot. I dont want to die. That really hit me. He didnt want to die. I was telling him, like, youre not going to die. Im going to stick with you through it. Reporter locklear used his shirt to stop the bleeding. Another sergeant attended to a 12yearold boy shot in the leg. The shootings were not random. I was right by where all the little kids play, so it was really scary to hear everyone screaming and running and stuff. Reporter some people ran for cover hiding inside stores. One worker says her manager tried to help people in the area. My manager went to go close the doors and so she was grabbing anyone that she could to get in. And people were very terrified. Reporter others escaped outside, crying and scared. They were just basically yelling get out of the mall, get out of the mall. Theres a shooter, theres a shooter. Reporter Police Arrived in full Tactical Gear and locked down the mall. They went store to store conducting a search for the two suspects but came up empty. This is something you see in the movies, right . You never would suspect it to happen where you work or where you do your activities like shopping. Reporter b. A. R. T. Shut down the san bruno station because it was thought one of the suspects may have boarded a train. A gun was found on a train at the 12th street station in oakland. We knew who we were looking for. But those leads are still being followed up on to make sure that we have that informations accurate. And chief, do you have Surveillance Video from inside that food court or from inside the mall that can help with your investigation . Yes. Were combing through hours of video. Having so many cameras results in a large amount of video thats been combed through by investigators to this point. Its been fruitful. I can tell you that. So we have some solid information to move forward on, and we hope to have some concrete information for you by . This is 4 00 this afternoon, a crowded mall, anybody could have been in there. And here we have a that breaks out right in the middle of a food court. Yeah, its kind of it makes you scratch your head. Were talking about young people here who were involved in some very dangerous behavior with a complete disregard for their surroundings or the people that they argregating with. Its a challenge for us in Law Enforcement as we see more and more of this. Initial reports were of an active shooter that, you know, which is traditionally someone who enter as crowded place to kind of fire at random to promote some type of cause. Weve determined that thats not the case in this instance. But its kind of remarkable that we would have the disregard for the safety of the general public that were seeing in incidents like this. Well let that be the last word. The chief with san bruno police. Thank you so much for your time tonight. We appreciate it. Good night, thank you. The tanforan mall i reopen atrow morning. Nunez had shot himself twice in the head with a survivor and survived. Officers fearing for their safety and the publics safety shot nunez after he refused to drop his gun and surrender. The two officers were cleared of criminal charges by the das office last year during a twoweek civil try key witness testimony raised doubt of nunez threatened the officers before they opened fire. We also see this as a sign that the community is no longer willing to allow officers to just use force or to kill people without being held accountable for doing it. Reporter in a statement the City Attorneys Office said in part the city will be reviewing appellate auctions. The officers are experienced and acted in a manner consistent with their use of force. We met Sergeant Paul kelly of the police union at a community barbecue. He shared his disappointment. The family has said nunezs death proves officers need Better Mental Health and crisis intervention training. Kelly says with this shooting that was not the case. When it comes to having sympathies and emotions for a grieving family, totally understandable. But they, the jury, made the decision to have that sympathy instead of the facts. Reporter in his 25 years in the department, Sergeant Kelly says its rare for officers who are cleared criminally to then lose a civil trial. In san jose, im Azenith Smith, ktvu fox 2 news. This train crossing has claimed three lives in about a year, but how much warning do people need whether theyre walking or driving to stay off of obviously active Railroad Tracks . First, protesters take to the streets to send a message to washington about the crisis at the border. In the forecast for the fourth of july and beyond. Hundreds of protesters took to the streets soph San Francisco this afternoon. They want the federal government to close the migrant camps at the border. The group blocked traffic for a time on montgomery street near senator Dianne Feinsteins office. Their message to close down immigration facilities is urgent they say. They are treated horribly in the camps. The camps are worse than prison and people are suffering. Theyre sleeping on concrete. Theyre sleeping on floors. Theyre filthy. Advocates say those in the detention facilities are fleeing poverty and violence in their native countries. They say migrants are being denied human rights and civil dignity as they seek asylum in the u. S. The move follows an announcement from the Trump Administration today that it is abandoning its effort to pursue further legal action. Last week the u. S. Supreme court blocked the question from being included on the forms. The development is being called a major victory for those who said the question was part of a larger effort by the white house to undercount regions with large immigrant communities. Enforcement stepped up near train tracks after two pedestrians were hit and killed last week. Police have issued a number of tickets to drivers who stop their vehicles on railways. What smart trains are doing to reduce the danger from the high speed trains. Reporter even before smart train laid the first rail the man tra was safety safety then and ever since. After six deaths they have to reconsider some things. Though this smart train seems far away at almost 70 miles an hour, it is not. And theres no horn. Something prohibited along much of the smart system. Whistle wavers that those communities petitioned for. Now with three deaths at the crossing in about a year, smart is speeding up its assessment of this crossing. We met smart train rider Marshall Ackerman walking across the golf course drive crossing this morning. I dont know what else the Train Company can do. I mean, you put put take some responsibility for their own actions. Reporter now besides all this big, obvious, loud, and bright crossing equipment, all kinds of other warnings abound. Example there are four signs on the sidewalk. There are six signs along the roadside. There are nine signs on the pavement you drive on and now four of these right here since the two accidents. After each incident whether its intentional or unintentional, we investigate that area and we say what else could have we done . Reporter smart is in the process of getting permits from several towns along the line to install socalled z gates, gates you must walk or bike through to get to the tracks. If youre not paying attention, youre going to run into a fence. Reporter at some troublesome crossings, horns may have to return. Only for 10 or 2 seconds each time. So i mean, its not like every hour every day every minute its happening. Nothing is off the table. Nothing should be off the table. Everything should be we want to save lives, period. Reporter the smart train has always been committed to doing wa what the communities want. Safety still remains the mantra and that could change things. Ktvu fox 2 news. All right.
