The 2017 tubbs fire that roared through santa rosa killed 22 people and disrupted the lives of tens of thousands of other people. Now, we are learning the fire also exposed firefighters to potentially Serious Health risks. Ktvus Christien Kafton has the preliminary test results from a new study that found elevated levels of chemicals and toxins in their systems. Reporter the tubbs fire devastated the north bay in 2017 and San Francisco firefighters were right there on the front lines fighting the fire. After those flames faded, 149 of those firefighters submitted blood and urine samples to be analyzed, looking to see if any toxic chemicals built up in their systems. Now preliminary results are in. Its not just trees and brush thats burning. There are houses burning and within those houses there are lots of toxic chemicals that our firefighters are coming into contact with. Reporter the study found firefighters had elevated levels of substances, a carcinogenic and hormone disrupter in fire retardant, and high levels of mercury, a known neurotoxin and carcinogen. The chief says tracking chemical exposures is critical to firefighter safety. Firefighters are dying with what we call their boots off. Instead of dying in an incident at a fire or vehicle accident, theyre dying of cancer and other diseases. Reporter dr. Rachel frosh says the results are preliminary and stresses the samples were taken weeks after the fire had been put out. Samples were taken following the camp fire last year. Those results are still pending. The plan now is to get samples from firefighters closer to the front lines. The study has suggested results but also raises a lot of additional questions. And so we want to be prepared to go out next time. Reporter the San FranciscoFirefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation is working with researchers on that study and sharing the results with Fire Departments up and down the state and across the country. The amount of toxic exposures that theyre getting with minimal equipment is extremely serious. Reporter a cancer survivor herself, chief nicholson says this battle is personal. Thank you. All right, were waiting on a warm you. And its going to be a little bit longer. Tomorrow it will warm, but subtle, a degree or two, and then a few more the next day and a few more the next day. By friday ask saturday well see numbers perhaps into the low 90s. This is not a heat wave, trying to get back to close to normal. These were the highs from today. 82 degrees in fairfield is is cooler than i would expect this time ofwere splitting hairs. Youre not going the much of a difference other than you might notice a little bit. Youre going see more rapid clearing, i guess, tomorrow in the inland valleys. If you get to 85 degrees, thats noticeable over to 78 of a couple days ago. But with that said, this weather system to the north is delivering rain to vancouver island, portland, seattle. Even brought showers to the reading area around northeast california. The impact for us is fogs coming on shore because its been stretched out and lifted up. That low is not supposed to be there. At this time of year its supposed to be the pacific high, which is our dominant weather feature in the summer or is supposed to be. The last couple years hasnt been doing its trick. So with it gone you get this. A lot of push of find inland. A lot of sea breeze a lot of high humidities. Lower fire danger and better air quality. Theres nothing really bad that comes with t quite frankly unless youre having an outdoor barbecue at the coast. In terms of air quality and fire danger, not a bad pattern for cal fire and the bay area quality. Im getting used to it. Visibility sketchy on the golden gate bridge. Theres that low we talked about. This pattern sticks with us certainly through tomorrow and gradually moves the low gradually moves as we get into thursday and friday. And thats when the reds from the 90s come westward so. This is the forecast for tomorrow. Looks a lot like today to me. Forecast highs, 4 in fairfield. So if you sketch all the way out to the inland valleys like brentwood and antioch, youll find upper 80s. Danville at 83. Livermore at 83. So its very very thats very mild this time of year. San jose is 81 degrees. This is your tuesday. Wednesday or pardon me, your wednesday. And youre going to see temperatures generally warming as we go into bay area weekend friday and saturday.
